The Technical Area – Liverpool’s Attacking Trio

Few could have predicted the distribution of points from Liverpool’s midfield with any confidence heading into Gameweek 1.

Some of us – unnerved by Philippe Coutinho’s absence through injury and rumours of his possible departure – even abstained altogether, writing off the investment as too much of a risk.

Yet those who gambled were rewarded with points. Goals from all three primary options in the Liverpool attack – Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino – during Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Watford confirmed the potency of the trio.

In this week’s Technical Area, we will be looking into the performance of each of these three players, analysing their goalscoring threat, positioning and chance creation potential. Though much can – and will – change as more data becomes available, here’s our breakdown of who impressed us most in the season’s opening Gameweek.

Luk rising tonight, will cause mayhem for people without him or Kane

Easily drop from Kane > Luk, if desperate for Lukaku. Say you have Aguero and jesus/Laca/morata, your looking at taking a hit to get him in

I transferred out Lejeune because he was injured but now Zaha is injured do I just swallow the hit or use the chip Free Transfer?

There is not a Free transfer chip. The free hit chip means that you can make unlimited changes to your team for the game week it is activated in, but straight after that gameweek, your team reverts back to what it was before.

For example, if you used it to take out Zaha, he would not be in your team for this weekend, but will re-appear next week so you would still be in a position where you would need to transfer him out.

Fancy Utd for a clean sheet against Swansea so that is 3 points at least for playing Matic, so who ever you bring in has to score 7 points just to break even.
But are you worried about Zaha dropping in value? If so i would bring in Wijnaldum who has 3 out of his next 4 at home in and very attacking Liverpool side

So with Wilf out, looks like a hit is required. 14m to spend, Zaha and Fabregas to who:

    1) Mkhitaryan + 6m or less option
    2) Pogba + 6m or less option
    3) Eriksen/Delle + 4.5 option (Likely RLC)
    4) Ramsey + Willian/Tadic/Redmond

Of the 6m or less options:
    A) Xhaka
    B) Brunt

Imo those with Zaha should be patient and suffer the price drop. Your 4th/ 5th defender or 5th midfielder should be enough to cover the injury for this week.

There are plenty of option at 6.5 or less. Better to have another game's scope this weekend to get an idea of who to bring in rather than swap an injury for a risk.

The likes of Richarlison, Gross, Tadic, Ince, Shaqiri and Atsu could all be great prospects that have shown glimpses of quality in GW1. Better to wait another week and see which ones stand out after another game.

Yeah but for example Zaha falls to 6.9, Lukaku goes to 11.6, you can still use that extra TV to replace him worth another 7.0.

Wrong. You need Lukaku to rise to 11.7 AND then you need to sell him in order to cash in that 0.1.

Players need to rise by 0.2 in order for their selling value to go up by 0.1. You would then have to sell that player in order to profit from the rises, you don't just get a spare 0.1 to use as you please.

Transfers implies you'll be taking a hit?

I know a 0.1m drop is effectively 0.5m this early on, but does it out-value 4 points?

Unless a player is injured or not starting, best to just hold on. 1 game doesn't constitute form so I dunno why there are so many knee-jerk transfers going on.

I'm not taking a hit this week. I don't have Kane and the only way to get him is to upgrade Jesus. this means I'd have to downgrade Zaha to a £5.0m mid. If it was a £6.9 Zaha I was downgrading I wouldn't have enough money. I might not even get Kane in the end but I still need to plan ahead for these things.

But that's my point. You're selling Jesus just because he had one bad game in FPL. Obviously you thought him good enough to put him in your team, so what's changed? He didn't score in GW1. Either did Kane.

"But Kane looked great, he had a bunch of chances and hit the post"
            - So did Jesus.

If you get a 5.0m as your 4th playing mid you're looking at Atsu pretty much.

I would argue RLC at 4.5m would be just as good. Meaning you wouldn't have to be settling for two players that could score just as well as the players you would be taking out.

I'm not selling Jesus because he had one bad gameweek, I'd be selling him if Kane had an explosive one. Say he bags a hattrick and looks like he might rise by £0.2 or even £0.3 can I just avoid that? Well I could but its good to have the option there if I need it. Look I'm not kneejerking nor am I saying that Jesus is a bad player or Kane is a superior player I'm just trying to be as flexible with my team as I possibly can.

Which is why I wanted to save my FT for GW3 so that I could have that flexibility but looks like Zaha is definitely injured so can't go through with that unless I want to willfully reduce my options.

i saw this point argued over on the Best Zaha Replacement thread, point being replace Zaha with RLC, rotate him with Carroll if you have him and wait for form to emerge with your 2.5 ITB.

If i end up burning the FT this week, this is likely my choice, but i *really* want 2 FTs with 3 trades only costing me -4 going into GW3.

Also: i wasn't planning on starting Zaha @ POOL anyway.

there are other midfielders, who are not 7m, yknow?

price doesn't equal points, esp at this point in the season, when no player has any real quantifiable form.

That's The Carp's point: wait for another week of data, take the -0.1 on the chin and make a better decision next week

I liked Ramsey pre season, this is the excuse I needed to make the easy switch. Team value too important to me at this stage in the season. I wouldn't advise holding Zaha

Why suffer the drop, when you can always get Zaha back, for less?

I know there's no obvious choice at this moment, but punt-ish Ramsey looks better than holding.

I see your point, but do I really think playing Carroll is a better option?

I'd much prefer to move now for someone like Ritchie, bank the full 1.0m, have a better chance at a higher score next week, and not have an injury doubt

Zaha out is a no brainer

I'm really trying to hold onto Zaha here. I figured I can rest him on the bench for 2-3 matches (given that he'll be mending over the international break). But then i notice he'll be returning to Man U, Man C, Chelsea. That's too much for me. I'll await further reports tomorrow but if it looks like it'll be confirmed that he's out for 3-4 weeks I'm gonna have to bring in Rambo.

I'm holding Zaha. It's only a 0.1m. Prefer to make 2 transfers next week and bring a heavy hitting mid for Zaha and I'll have more information to go with and hopefully make the transfer more useful as opposed to just jumping on someone that looked half decent opening game of the season so I don't lose a 0.1m

Plenty of time to build TV by getting on the bandwagons before the even take off. This week will potentially get a very us that information whereas gw1 alone cannot.

I'm sure the topic has been beaten to the death, but is it time to get rid of Gabbiadini for Mounie? I have Ince as well, but I'd be able to upgrade with the extra funds. Worried that Gab got pulled off so early.

Mkhi has one bad game and is removed around 60 mins and everyone on here will be panicking.. That'll never happen with pogba. Even if mkhi scores more in the short term pogba is more suited to my Fpl mentality

Mkhi not nailed is a bit over hyped here.

Mourinho will almost certainly start Mkhi in the No10 role against weaker teams. He has been majestic since pre season.

Yes when United play the Top 6 he could pushed out wide or roatated. But they don't till GW8.
