All At Sea – The Ghost Ship Team Challenge

The longer they play, the more they lose. Ace Rothstein’s mantra in the film “Casino” was never far from my mind as my FPL team stumbled and shanked its way towards half-a-millionth in the world last season.

Every bright idea and cunning plan merely deepened my decline, and for a proud man it felt like the end. I’ve never claimed be anything special as a Fantasy Premier League player, but I’d become accustomed to the notion that my years of consistency around the 10k mark entitled me to a mediocre suburban respectability in conversations about Fantasy Football. How could I show my face at the school gate now?

I reassured myself that I’d played it by the book: I’d gone cheap at the back in a 3-4-3, played the fixtures, jumped on the bandwagons, looked in bemused incomprehension at Doosra’s long sequences of three-digit numbers.

Yet try as I might, transfer after transfer had backfired in my face with cold Teutonic efficiency – buy Hazard, sell Hazard, buy Hazard, sell Hazard, somehow end up with Ryan Fraser.

It’s human nature to attribute one’s successes to merit and one’s failures to fortune but I couldn’t persuade myself that this was just bad luck, I had to face the fact that I might just not be very good at FPL – and it hurt.

My wife showed me the way forward with her customary bedside manner “oh for god’s sake either lighten up or just stop playing it”.

Lightening up was out of the question, but stop playing it? The idea felt strangely exhillerating: no more emotional conflicts of interest, no more West Brom highlights – I could just be a normal football fan for a change? I resolved to give it a try for a season.

The Challenge

The FPL launch came and went without a wobble, but as the charity shield approached I started clucking for just one more taste. I struck upon a compromise: playing, but not playing in the traditional sense.

In 2016/17 every decision seemed to make my position a little bit worse – the more I played, the more I lost. This season my whole strategy would be to make as few decisions as humanly possible, to set sail upon a purpose-built ghost ship.

No transfers, no rotation, no adjustments to my captaincy or sub order – total nautical negligence.

To add spice to the experiment I imposed a penalty for success – that if I beat my overall rank from last year using this strategy I will retire from FPL permanently.

Developing a comprehensive framework of ground rules for the experiment proved prohibitively difficult and dull.

Suffice to say I’m going to try to make no transfers at all (as Wilfried Zaha’s continued presence in my starting lineup will attest) but accepting that exceptional circumstances may emerge (e.g. season-ending injury or transfer) in which I might, I’m not going to use either wildcard and I intend to use my bench boost and triple captaincy chips on the standard late-season double-gameweeks.

Selection Strategy

The selection strategy was fairly straightforward – pick an eleven that should score well over a full season and have a half-reasonable bench to cover for absences. Below is my motley ghost ship crew.

I felt the player list offered long-term value in premium defenders, some of the mid-priced mids, and a simple Kane (c) and Lukaku (vc) duopoly up front. Knowing I would never change my captaincy made me feel more comfortably sticking to just two premium attackers and spreading the cash around the squad.

I was prepared to accept a degree of rotation risk with my premium fullbacks (in the hope that the potential for late-game bench blocking won’t be as great as it would be with more attacking players), but new arrivals to the Premier League were avoided entirely for safety’s sake.

Results So Far

The early results? So far, so Rod Stewart, with a 26k overall rank and comfortably top of the Mods and Contributors league (when I join it this week, having established that I’d be winning). I know it’s not going to last, but it’s nice to have something to talk about at the school gate again.

The All At Sea- Ghost Ship Stilicho can be found here.

Incredible achievement by doing absolutely nothing 🙂

Poor Uwais - last year's FPL runner up. Currently top of the mods and contributors league and about to be placed second again - this time by a ghost ship team.

Mixed feelings about this - if it means we get more Stilicho content then it's a wonderful thing, if it means I'm being trounced by someone who hasn't lifted a finger since the season started I'm less amused!

This line makes me profoundly sad. Especially as you are actually on course for this to happen...

Also chosing Ben Davies for the season with Danny Rose lurking... no one anticipated his meteoric rise + now I don't think Rose gets back in the team... think you've got a bit lucky there though!

I had to finalise my team the same week Rose came out and criticised the club in the press, and I tool the view then that Rose's injury might mysteriously last right up to the January transfer window. I am a Spurs fan so not a total punt, but yes it was lucky too - or has been thus far.

I actually had Rose in my draft up to that point - and was prepared for him not to play for the first few weeks.

Agreed, I'm hoping he'll either renege on the deal or that somehow not playing will allow him to post here more often. Not sure either are the most likely outcomes though.

    Bertrand / Dawson / Walker / Mee / Dunk

    Kane (c) / Lukaku / J Rod

Anyone remember a team called kingKONG back in 2010-11?

It was the overall leader for a few weeks from GW6 despite not making any transfers or captaincy changes up to that point, and only one promotion from the bench (Dann replacing Givet for GW2 onwards).

Later he started playing actively and eventually finished somewhat lower.

His initial squad (3-5-2) was: Hart, (Carson); A.Cole, J.Evans, Dann, (Givet, Baptiste); Malouda, Nani, A.Johnson, Bale, Etherington; Drogba, Tevez, (Harewood).

An excellent initial selection, but he was very lucky that all his first eleven were in good form and none of them got injured or rested.

There were of course no Bench Boost or Triple Captain chips then, so this is unlikely to be repeated.

Remarkable experiment. Props to you for going with a premium 5 at the back strategy right from the outset. Will bookmark your team to benchmark my own efforts.

For finance aficionados, this experiment mirrors the dilemma about active vs passive strategy of investing.

Sound logic here, playing with high scoring defenders and forwards. However, the issue here is that sooner or later your overall rank will start to only fluctuate up and down within a certain range, and not climb to where you want it to.

By making the right transfers at the right time only can one expect a real boost in their rank if you are serious about the game (or just for bragging rights). Many players strive to get the best rank possible and hence are willing to take those calculated risks. Some succeed, some do not.

Wow! You portray my pre-season quandary to the letter - do you know my wife?

So wish I had the .... to adopt your decision. Serious method over madness in your selections though.

What an hilarious experiment. And a very interesting squad.

It will be very interesting to follow the team throughout the season. I wish it was allowed to create 2 teams, as I would love to try to compare a ghost ship with my actual team next year.

I wish you the best of luck - whatever outcome that means 😉

Would also like to refer to this website that someone posted on here a few weeks back. Whether it is a fun or depressing experiment to check how your GW 1 team would have done, it is interesting nonetheless. Of course it does not mimic your experiment fully, as one would probably have picked a different squad for the entire season, but it is fun to check out....

And of course it doesn't take into account that you perhaps would have chosen different C/VC if it was for the entire season as well.

I think this just highlights even more how successful the Kim Kardashian formation has been this season. a ghost ship team set up in the traditional 3-4-3 formation would not have done nearly as well I feel. Credit to the author for recognising this from the get go!

This is fascinating. Got to fancy that defence and forward line to provide consistent returns over the season. Strong possibility of a top 20k finish or even 10k if the TC and 4gb reap dividends. It's only the midfield that might throw a spanner in the works!

"The season of the casual" . This phrase crops up every year when individuals are not doing as well as they hope. Just blame it on casual players.

not blaming them but its clear so far less tinkering has paid off

pick reliable 4-4-2 with cheap mids like kante/matic captain lukaku / kane get top 4-6 defenders and you will be top 100k

I entered a 'Dead' team in the FFS "Ghost/Dead Team" League; I'm sitting in 7th on 399 points which puts me around the 10% mark and not hat far behind my real team.

I've not seen any threads about it (not that surprising given the nature of it) but I would like to see those teams that have used transfers and hits deleted as they go against the rules.

Anyway, yeh, it is kinda 'fun' when my dead team beats the one I invest countless hours pouring over FFS and painstakingly screwing up my transfers.

I'm currently third in that league with 411, a whole 2 points behind my 'proper' team. Definitely puts the whole thing into perspective!

Didn't realise some in there have been cheating. I forget who's modding but they should definitely be taken out.

I worry you'll eventually be punished by premium mids but looking forward to seeing how you fare over the season. I always like to look at the overall dream team and check whether you could actually have afforded it at the start of the season, sums up why I and so many others did so well in 2015-16 by getting on the right cheap bandwagons from the start.
