Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Kane Strike Not Enough

A goal from their talisman fails to drag Spurs from their slump as Leicester City inflict a third defeat in five matches on Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Harry Kane’s seventh goal in as many away matches this season was, on the face of it, the sign of a good night’s work at Leicester City.

The strike was certainly a relief for the 17.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers, that’s close to a million, who captained him.

But they could have been excused for expecting more – his six-point return at the King Power Stadium was the first time this season he’s failed to earn bonus when on the scoresheet.

And then there’s the issue of Spurs themselves. How long can a misfiring side keep relying on Kane to bail them out, particularly when he has struggled to make an impact at home all season?

The 2-1 defeat last night was their third straight match without a win, and their third loss in five, with perhaps the only positive on the night the return from long-term injury of Erik Lamela (6.3), who was handed 13 minutes from the bench and still found the time to set up Kane’s goal.

However, from a Fantasy perspective, his return to contention only clouds the issue in the Spurs midfield, handing Pochettino more options to rotate.

Not that we have interest in that Spurs midfield right now.

Christian Eriksen missed a glorious chance to score his first goal since Gameweek 8 and continues to leak owners as a result. He lost 166,000+ in the lead up to last night, and a further 12,000+ since have made him the third most sold player heading into Gameweek 15.

Pochettino can’t even offer us defensive solidity to fall back on at the moment. They’ve kept just one clean sheet in six matches and the rotation issues surrounding their wing-backs – Serge Aurier and Danny Rose were given the nod last night – have further dented managers’ confidence in Ben Davies.

The Welsh international has lost owners in five of the last six Gameweeks and is already exceeding Eriksen’s sales going into the weekend trip to Watford.

That match precedes a Champions League dead rubber in which Pochettino will surely rest key assets, so Davies and Kieran Trippier could well play at both Watford and in Gameweek 16’s Wembley visit from Stoke City.

But despite a fine short-term schedule (wat STK BHA), investment in any of Spurs’ stars is an increasingly fraught affair at present.

Foxes back in focus

New Leicester manager Claude Puel has described his side as a work in progress, and that progress was there for all to see against Spurs.

Jamie Vardy’s goal was a huge relief for his 13.9% ownership, although more than 133,000 managers have jumped ship over the past six Gameweeks, with the England man having found the net just twice in his last eight starts.

The form of Riyad Mahrez is considerably more encouraging.

His winner last night was his third goal of the season, and all have come since Gameweek 8. During the same period, he’s also provided three of his six assists for the campaign.

Owned by just 4.2%, the midfielder could prove to be an excellent pre-Christmas differential as the Foxes prepare for a promising quartet of matches (BUR new sou CRY) up next.

However, Demarai Gray’s stock – previously buoyant under Puel when he started the last four – took a dent following last night’s encounter. The 5.3 midfield option was benched for the first by his manager, with Shinji Okazaki returning to the starting line-up.

At the back, things remain patchy. Leicester have kept a very unPuel-like one clean sheet in seven, but those short-term fixtures could help improve that.

Christian Fuchs missed out for the Foxes due to the birth of his daughter on Tuesday afternoon, while striker Kelechi Iheanacho was also absent through illness but is expected back in the squad for Gameweek 14.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Top budget options

Ashley Young (4.9)’s brace last night highlighted the potential of budget options, which will be needed in the coming weeks to afford pricey options such as Chelsea’s heavyweights and other premium priced midfielders from among the ranks of Liverpool and Manchester City. A good budget option on the bench can also come in handy for those sticking with City’s rotating stars.

Of course Young is not going to score every week. But he plays and has the potential to deliver points if called on or coming into your XI off the bench.

Who have you got your eye on as a strong budget option? Who do you already own and would recommend? Be good to get a good spread of options across all positions.

i'm looking at a Watford defender as well. Some nice fixtures.

Hughes didn't appeal to me as didn't want to ditch Richarlison and a Watford midfield double up was a step too far.

Here's one put forward recently by Hall of Fame No. 1 Jay (who incidentally recommend Ashley Young before his recent goal glut)

      Drumroll...Peter Crouch.

Costs 4.8...leaving plenty to invest in midfield and defence. Over Xmas he should get some starts but often comes on. Across his 193 minutes he has scored 3 times.

Over December Stoke have SWA, WHU, WBA at home and a trip to Huddersfield.

I think Jay could be onto something.

Another factor is the Everton striker situation - with Allardyce set to come in we may need a week or two to find out who his favoured striker will be. If we get in Niasse or Calvert Lewin now and he benches them then they are no better than a player like Crouch.

He will get some cameos. Maybe a few starts. But the issue is worse than with DCL/Niasse. There's Choupo, Jese, Berahino and Crouch.

        just done my WC.
went for Wilson & RLC (held) over Crouch & GroB. Short-term fixtures (until Xmas) swayed it for me. Still something I may go back to just before Xmas.

I think I'm getting Crouch to replace that useless lump Chris Wood (don't ask!). Frees up cash for either Sane to Hazard or Choupo-Moting to Ramsey.

I'm in a 3-5-2 as I can't find more than a couple strikers I want. In that midfield I have Richarlison and Chopo-Moting as enablers, but that could just as well have been Gross. I think these three are great value picks. And RLC might be as well, I don't need him atm as I have the big hitters I want but if I change my mind and want Kane in at some point, RLC will be the way to get there.

Pope as a GK is another one.

Young has to be compared to Rich & Gross at this stage. Interesting alternative and provides more cash to invest elsewhere.

Not sure how nailed he is.

Very frustrating that he's listed as a mid, while Valencia who does the same job is a defender.

A 4.9 Young as a defender would be a must have.

Young would be a very interesting option if listed as a defender.

I have Tarkowski at the back and Gross, Choupo-Moting, RLC and Richarlison in midfield as budget enablers. I don't like any budget enabling strikers at the moment. Everton strikers (Niasse/DCL) need monitoring with new coach coming in, not interested in Murray since I got Gross, same with Gray, and I won't make the same mistake twice with Joselu.

Callum Wilson is an interesting option but with those heavy fixtures coming in December he's got too much competition up front. Having a decent playing bench is a must in my opinion.

most of my team is comprised of budget enablers in order to allow me to have 5 super heavy hitters (all in theory).
GK: Elliot/Hennesey...rotate well and cost 4.2 and 4.3 . cant see beyond those two
DF: Mee/tarkowski/Francis/Dunk...again all very cheap and dont seem to want to loose any of them at least for the moment. might exit francis and re-enter after rough patch.
MF: Gross/Richarlison/RLC are not only enablers but also almost "must haves" as most active players have at least 2/3

going forward: Wimmer 4.4/Clark 4.5 (manquillo or even lascelles)/mariappa 4.1 although not sure how long he'll carry on starting matches. liverpool has a few options but all subject to rotation

template has been formed and it will take a lot of unexpected events to break it

I'm looking at Kiko or Zeelagar too, but the one that hasn't been mentioned on this site at all of late is Simpson, who could be an ideal budget defender for the upcoming schedule. Fixtures are decent, Puel seems to be doing a job there, only 4.5 and looks nailed on. Wouldn't be expecting too many fancy baps or attacking returns but he does look a solid option atm.
The one I'm happy to own atm is the magic bean himself and I rate Niasse also (I just hope the new manager does also).

Currently own an array of budget options: DCL, RLC, Tom Carroll, Mee, Wimmer, Duffy.

Assuming no injuries/suspensions, going to keep over the festive period: RLC (security of starts and attacking returns), Mee (obviously), and Duffy and Wimmer rotate well in terms of fixtures.

DCL will be monitored, especially if and when a new manager comes in. He's achieved 5 attacking returns so far this season which is acceptable for his price. Tom Carroll will soon be upgraded, there are other options who offer more attacking threat at his price (Surman, Hughes), and plenty who offer far more for 1.5m-2m more (Gross, Richarlison, Chuopo-Moting).

Going to add to the budget array in 2-3 gameweeks time though with Daniels exiting ahead of his 3 horrible fixtures for a Watford defender, who conveniently start a run of nice fixtures at exactly that time.

      No.

I remember EURO 2016 fantasy football allowed you to change between matchdays in a given round. I started off with Giroud who got me a goal. Thought I'd switch to someone else (I forget who..), then Mueller (surely a shoo-in?) but nothing and I lost points.

I finally switched to Dragovic on the final day and he got send off, so even though I had four stabs at the captaincy I managed to turn 10 points into -4. Sometimes it's all about the bird in the hand.

Indeed - I think the actual odds of Hazard scoring are still less than 50%, though of course he might score more.

It's the classic betting shop window draw tactic - "we'll give you 10-1 on Arsenal winning 3-1 and Sanchez scoring". You can imagine it happening because you can picture it mentally, so you start to think that the odds are very generous, forgetting of course that all sorts of other combinations are possible.

If I had Hazard and knew he was starting, I would’ve changed it from Kane. But that’s an in-form Hazard against Swansea at home. I’d be happy to have 6 points from my captain every gameweek—apart from the double gameweeks, naturally.

I’ve captained Morata this gameweek however, and I would’ve taken the 6 extra points from Kane if given the opportunity, as Morata doesn’t seem quite as good as Hazard, Fantasy wise.

I actually like Vardy so thinking Silva and Carroll to a new pair, any ideas?

I think those of us holding him would do well not to compound the risk of doing so by captaining him too. Any Chelsea player against a desperately out-of-sorts Newcastle side would be a much better shout.

Seen a few people last night and this morning say if they could get 6 points every gameweek from their captain they would be happy while also saying they may get rid of Kane.

Just to put the above into perspective there are 12 players that are averaging 6 or above points per game. 4 of those are kind of anomalies with less than 3 games played:

Salah - 7.31 points per game (13 played)
    Pogba - 7.29 ppg (7 played)
    Sterling - 7.09 ppg (11 Played)
    Mustafi - 6.71 ppg (7 played)
    Coutinho - 6.43 ppg (7 played)
    Sane - 6.23 ppg (13 played)
    Morata - 6.17 ppg (12 played)
    Kane - 6.15 ppg (13 played)

    Anomalies:

    Gazzaniga - 9.00 ppg (1 played)
    Zeegelaar - 7.33 ppg (3 played)
    Karius - 6.00 ppg (1 played)
    Chadli - 6.00 ppg (2 played)

Nice post. I tend to agree with you, with the caveat that it's all very well to look backwards and say 'these players have returned x' instead of 'I know these players will return x'.

But it does point to Kane being poor value. All of the players above him are cheaper - some significantly so.

Agreed. The non-captaining of Salah is the most frustrating thing for me. Why on earth have I only captained him once in 13 weeks of ownership? I'm sure I'm not alone too.

      2. Reckoner.
        • 12 Years
        6 years, 6 months ago

I'd agree he isn't great value at the moment but two things to consider:

        1) What other striking options aside from Morata do we currently have?
        2) We all know Kane has the ability to score 2, 3, 4 in a game while also being involved in assists.

I'm going to keep him, whether I carry on captaining him is another matter.

4-5-1 is always an option, with Morata, Niasse and maybe Abraham, or downgrading one of them further to 4.5. We are allowed three strikers but because, as you say, there are so few options, perhaps it's best not to make things worse by picking more than one premium striker.

          1. Reckoner.
            • 12 Years
            6 years, 6 months ago

It is definitely an option, what's stopping me doing it is firstly the fear of a Kane haul and secondly I am pretty happy with my 4/5 in Midfield and 3/4 in defense so not sure where I'd spend the money.

At the end of the day he is currently the 3rd highest scoring player in the game.

Also, the thing about strikers is they can never outscore their average position by playing further up the pitch. They cannot be OOP, only POO. Think about Hazard and Salah playing basically as support strikers with extra points for goals and clean sheet bonuses. Captaining a reliable midfield option (and there are quite a lot of these) shout be a no-brainer, but we chase the hat-tricks and miss the decent midfield points hauls.

fantasy football doesnt work on averages though, you want to captain for the big hauls, whilst avoiding the bad weeks.

At least with Kun when he's ben benched he hasn't come on late. If you had Sane (vc) your captain scored since the start of the season would have been; 9,2,1,9,20,11,3,10,7,12,8,7,8 for a total return of 214pts

What we actually want is bullies (score well outside of games against top 6).

This is because we are unlikely to captain our best player for a tough game when our next best player has an easier game.

Allardyce at Everton should mean clean sheets after three to four Gameweeks. First thing he does is tighten up at the back. He also traditionally likes a big striker for set pieces.

Niasse and Calvert Lewin are both around 6ft so unsure which it will be.

Basically the set piece target and a defender become good Everton assets.

As for Pardew, expect less clean sheets and silly dancing should West Brom score 😉

        Expect Niasse to start.

After all he got 5 goals and 1 assist in the 377 minutes he played this season.
DCL got 1 goal and 4 assists in the 858 minutes he played this season.

Shows Niasse is the one to score, and that is what Allardyce needs. Someone to score when he got the chance to, and then let the defense secure the 1-0 victory.

If Pardew joins WBA expect an immediate upturn in form and attacking threat, but a decline in defensive nous. This will last 8-12 gameweeks, before a stagnation, decline in all areas of the team and eventual sacking. So in terms of players Phillips, Rodriguez might do well initially.

Allardyce will take up to 10 gameweeks and a transfer window to improve Everton, mainly because so much needs fixing and the squad is so imbalanced. From February onwards, possibly with Bolasie and Coleman back too, expect an improvement in all areas of the team, both attacking and defensively. Sam is a good manager, to become England boss he's shown that over several years.

    9. President Giggs
      • 10 Years
      6 years, 6 months ago

Don't really see Pardew doing great things at WBA.

Allardyce at Everton probably leads to better returns for their defenders after a few weeks, and likely better output from Sigurdsson's set pieces.

Otamendi for me. Should play every league game until new year and I don't think city will lose any of them

Held Kiko since week 6 and now he rises, straight after I lose him for Alonso!

Never mind, he looked pretty good again last night, easy to switch Daniel’s I for him

Nothing else pressing. Any reason not to do Daniels -> Alonso with my money in the bank?

Daniels is a good pick but Alonso has such a great run of fixtures to justify his price tag.

    After tonight's games, of course.

      Context:

      Fabianski // Elliot

[Alonso or Daniels] // Maguire // Moreno // Ward // Dunk

      Hazard // Salah // Sterling // Richarlison // RLC

      Morata // Kane // Wilson

Defiantly? Or definitely? I wonder if he will defy Conte’s team selection.

Silva and Carroll can go to Choupo and an 8.2

Have Sterling Salah and RLC, would you prefer Richarlison, Ramsay, Gross or Fabregas?

Gross over Richarlison? Wat has Spurs next but after that his fixtures are favourable.

Prepping my bench for the holiday fixtures. 0.6ITB 1FT.

    DDG Elliott
    Azpi Alonso Monreal Mee Mbemba
    Sane Sterling Salah RLC King
    Kane Morata Niasse

    King to:
    A. Young - leaves me w 0itb
    B. Hughes - leaves 0.3itb
    C. Other before 4.9?

Would leave me w quite the benching headache between niasse, rlc & ___ but gives me a full playing bench!

    Thoughts? & thanks
