The Digest – Gameweek 23

Our coverage of Gameweek 23 concludes this evening as we take a look at the key player, the team and the talking point to draw our attention from the latest round of matches.

Marko Arnautovic continues to profit from his recent move up front for West Ham. Liverpool put four past Manchester City in their first match without Philippe Coutinho, while the steady firming up of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) template squad appears to have accelerated, urging us to seek out alternatives.

The Player

Marko Arnautovic more than atoned for a disappointing double Gameweek 22.

After shrugging off a hamstring niggle, the Austrian delivered a goal and two assists in West Ham’s 4-1 win at Huddersfield to end Gameweek 23 as the top scoring player on 16 points.

That proved a chastening experience for the 114,000 owners who chose to part company before the Hammers’ head-to-head with David Wagner’s side.

Prior to his Gameweek 22 encounters with West Brom and Spurs, Arnautovic was one of the hottest properties around – having netted five times in as many appearances over Gameweek 16-20, he was drafted in by over 368,000 FPL managers.

But injury ruled him out of the trip to Wembley, leaving him with just five points over Gameweek 22, thanks to an assist for Andy Carroll’s late winner against the Baggies.

As evidenced on Saturday, Arnautovic’s out-of-position potential under David Moyes grows steadily by the Gameweek.

The underlying statistics also back up his claim.

Since netting his first of the season against Chelsea in Gameweek 16, he’s ranked fifth for both shots in the box (16) and efforts on target (nine) among midfielders.

Arnautovic has fired six goals across that stretch – that’s equal to Mohamed Salah and second only to Harry Kane’s 10.

With a home encounter against Bournemouth up next, he leads the way for new owners – over 146,000 have already recruited him since Saturday’s deadline.

The short-term schedule continues to smile kindly – over the next six, West Ham also host Crystal Palace and Watford and travel to Brighton and Swansea.

At the cost of just 7.0 in FPL, Arnautovic’s current form suggests that he could even remain a key figure in our squads when the fixtures turn against Moyes’ men in Gameweek 30.

And judging by his manager’s recent comments, we can expect the Austrian to remain in his new central role from this point onwards:

“When you play out wide, you might not get enough of the ball, so I actually think that we’ve given him a chance to get on the ball, to get more of the ball.
“He’s a big man to get the ball off as well, he’s got speed, he’s got power, so we’re trying to give him the ball as often as we can.

The Team

If there were fears over their Fantasy potential in light of Philippe Coutinho’s switch to Barcelona, Liverpool took a huge stride towards putting them to rest on Sunday afternoon.

A 4-3 win over Man City ended the league leaders’ unbeaten start to the domestic season and hands Jurgen Klopp’s men momentum ahead of a very encouraging run-in to 2017/18.

Indeed, between now and the end of the campaign, the Reds face just three of the current top eight sides – at home to Spurs in Gameweek 26, along with trips to Manchester United and Chelsea in Gameweeks 30 and 37 respectively.

From front to back, investment in Klopp’s side looks a wise move.

Salah’s goal and assist against Pep Guardiola’s team – his tenth double-figure haul of the campaign – was matched by Roberto Firmino, who climbed to second behind Kane in the FPL forward standings.

And Sadio Mane made it a clean sweep of goals from the Reds’ front three – he has now returned points in three successive Gameweeks.

Yet it was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal and assist that could bring him to the fore as a potential budget gem at just 5.6.

Granted, his pitch-time is still unclear – only eight of his 20 appearances since arriving from Arsenal were in the first XI. However, he’s now been named on the teamsheet in three of the last four Gameweeks, bagging 28 points.

At the back, the premium-priced Virgil van Dijk’s (5.5) aerial threat should profit the Reds in both boxes.

Expected to recover from a hamstring complaint for Monday’s trip to Swansea, the Dutchman arguably looks the only secure route into a defence that, prior to the weekend, had the best home defensive record in the league.

Elsewhere in their rearguard, Andrew Robertson (4.7) and Loris Karius (4.8) could offer cheaper options to the expensive Van Dijk if they can cement regular berths.

But a double or even triple-up on their attack – providing Oxlade-Chamberlain nails down a starting role – could end up being the preferred strategy, though much depends on the severity of Klopp’s rotation policy once the Champions League resumes next month.

The Talking Point

The output of budget-friendly players such as Arnautovic has triggered the gradual evolution of a template FPL squad in recent weeks.

With the Austrian and Jesse Lingard offering mid-price value in the centre of the park, funds have been freed up to acquire the seemingly near-essential Marcos Alonso at the back.

Factor in the growing popularity of Son Heung-min and Firmino, along with mainstays such as Kane, Salah and Raheem Sterling, and suddenly there’s a very similar look to many of our line-ups.

Those managers chasing down leads in mini-leagues face a dilemma – do they keep faith with this template or look for ways of breaking it in an attempt to make up ground?

Looking at the short-term fixtures can help.

The recent injury to Gabriel Jesus means that, suddenly, Sergio Aguero is a far more appealing option for back-to-back home encounters with Newcastle and West Brom. Undoubtedly, he is one of the main captain candidates for this weekend.

Leicester’s upcoming batch of home matches – (WAT SWA STK BOU) in the next six Gameweeks – now brings Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy into the picture as potential alternatives for the likes of Son and Firmino.

Elsewhere, Arnautovic’s team-mate Manuel Lanzini and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson have the form and fixtures as low-owned differentials.

And there’s also the January transfer window to help smash the currently accepted options.

Everton have already added Cenk Tosun to their ranks and are closing in on a deal for Theo Walcott ahead of three promising fixtures in four (WBA LEI CRY).

Alexis Sanchez’s apparent move to Man United could potentially bring last season’s top scoring FPL player back into the frame after a disappointing start to the season at Arsenal.

But if current press stories are anything to go by, it’s the Gunners themselves who could offer the most intriguing options as Wenger looks to restructure in light of the Chilean’s impending departure.

Not only is he looking to bring Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the Emirates as part of the Sanchez swap, the Arsenal manager’s mooted moves for Dortmund frontman Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Bordeaux’s highly-rated Malcolm could help enliven Fantasy managers’ options in the final third.

    Repost bottomed

With VAR coming into football, should players ignore the refs whistle at offside calls?

Like, if the flag goes up and whistle gets blown, should the striker still proceed to score and then get the goal if VAR shows he was inside?

Or would refs book strikers for time wasting if they do that?

And what if defenders / keepers stop once the whistle blows? Then the striker scores and VAR shows he was onside. Would the goal stand given the keeper doesn't try to save it because the whistle had gone?

Will we then get VAR on the VAR whereby they also have to review the goal to see if the refs whistle contributed to the goal by making the keeper stop or whether he would/wouldn't have saved it if he had continued.

Players should no longer play to the refs whistle really. It benefits the striker to ignore it then finish the chance off.

And the keeper. Should they try to save just in case? Or actually cease trying so they can say the goal is invalid regardless of whether the VAR shows onside or offside?

Good point, I think it shows they should keep playing until the ball is out of play. Stopping at the whistle is now the wrong choice if you know it could get overturned.

We'll see managers and players using what I've described tactically I bet.

There's no way they will introduce the rules without thinking eventualities like this through. A situation like that would never occur in my opinion. The ref would just not blow his whistle if they were going to review it. Simple

RP: Play to the whistle. I imagine VAR can't reverse the offside call, but correct me if I'm wrong. Could perhaps result in an indirect free kick instead, but more likely it just remains a mistake by officials. That's my guess

RP: Could see officials calling fewer offsides when it's a close call though. Letting VAR decide. That'll reduce mistakes though slow down play.

      Good post.

I've seen this very thing debated on other places and it's a good call. I have never doubted that VAR will only add another layer of controversy even though it sounds like a simple solution to some big problems...

I can see the chants now...

Play until the whistle blows, nothing can count after the whistle has gone. I imagine they will introduce a rule that the ref doesn't blow his whistle if they are going to use the VAR. He would wait to review it at the end of that play or if the chance comes to nothing. Ideally it would be like rugby where the TMO can review it while the game carries on and the ref can get a word in his ear whether to go back for the offside or keep playing

      Hope VAR is scrapped.

Doesn’t suit football imo. Too many subjective calls. The pundits can’t even agree in the studio afterwards having spent ages looking at every angle.

I also think that the grassroots game should be as close to top level game as possible in how it’s refereed.

I am very cautious on it.
        Agree about pundits point
To me, it can't work for anything bar black and white stuff. I wouldn't use it for anything subjective like a penalty call (apart from hand ball maybe)

Is Chamberlain a viable option that's the question. At 5.6 for Liverpool's attack it's certainly something to consider in my opinion. He's the natural player in the squad to take some of Coutinho's slack and has been excellent lately. Have to see if he can keep a regular spot.

I don't think I would. I'd prefer to go into a gameweek with a patched up team in order to save a transfer and get him in in 2.

hits often pay off , IF you make the rights ones, and don't do it every week, when obvious changes are needed it's worth it

Of course, some have stuck with Azpi the whole way through. -4 when they were the same price equals 20+ more points.

I generally need a few good reasons for one. It has to make sense on a number of levels. I don't just do them to get who I want in asap as a week later, I'll likely want someone else or the sold player suddenly looks good again

I 've got 88! I don't want even remember it, but still finished in 40k.
This season I am much more cautious.

I went hit crazy start of this season, couldn't help but tinker. Only my second season and didn't take last season very serious but I mean I took 80 hit points by GW16 which is honestly appauling, just couldn't help myself. Kept overthinking everything. Calmed down now and only took one 4 point hit since which was during DGW (which paid off) and rescued my rank a bit, sitting at 170k currently on 7 green arrows in a row. Only benefit I guess was my value being high at 106 now.

I think hits are OK. -4 maybe -8 if things are bad. Hits are good to get your team to where you want it to be.
Then slow it down, save and odd week and make informed decisions, little tweeks etc.

Well put. I'm not avoiding hits but I've been taking couple unnecessary ones. That's mostly due to my inexperience and impatient.

I do understand the logic behind stuff like 'don't take a hit for GK/def' but that just doesn't cover all the situations. Alonso is a good example of that when it could be really costly if you prolong the inevitable.

I did Masuaku + Alli > Alonso + Arnie (-4) last week and gained 11 points (after deduction). There was no emergency. If I only made a couple of points back, I'd have another week now to get the following 2 points (or another +15 points).

Each hit is different. I don't think you can say use a general rule for or against them.

Sorry I'm confused. I benched Masuaku as a result of Daniels + Alli > Alonso + Arnie (-4). Not that anyone cares, of course 🙂

I have 2 ft and 0.7 itb but I like my team. What to do ?

            Fabianski - Elliot
            Alonso - Jones - Kenny - Ogbonna - Long
            Salah - Alli - Sterling - Mahrez - Arnie
            Kane - Vardy - Quaner

I will captain Alli this week but then I will remove him. Maybe Vardy too if he will blank vs Watford.

            A) Fabianski out for Pickford or Ryan
            B) Ogbonna out for Danilo or Tarkowski
            C) Lose a ft

Cheers mate. Pool form is so good and they’re so much more fun to watch than United for sure.

                                What about Choupo to Sane?

I’m scared to sell Choupo, Stoke players can be the key to saving the FH chip for as late as possible, but this thinking could hamper me badly.

Yeah, had my mind set of saving, with 6 potential 28 blankers but B) would help there. C) covers a surprise Choupo benching this week too. So tough

Always see Mane as a home ground player. Haven't looked as never as option for me.

Yeah having him as a diff for 28 at home is a big part of the appeal but I suppose everyone will have him by then anyway.

A or B. I went for Mahrez. He has played great under Puel, great fixtures and still only 12% owned. He might be transferred but doesn't seem all that likely based on Puel's comments.

Plan this week is to do Richarlison to Mahrez having freeing up some funds, just been waiting for the cup game to be played and out the way.

Can anyone confirm if Mahrez came through okay, and how many minutes he played? Thanks.

Damn tried 3 browsers and still can't get it to play. If it's what it sounds like, and what it looks like in the thumbnail, I think your concerns are correct, and I assume they will change it, so they cannot allow a goal after the whistle is blown. Officials will be more cautious with decisions, allowing more to go to the VAR.

Unlike this one, I'm assuming, where offside shouldn't have been given so hastily.

I just googled VAR goal and it comes up

This one was totally fine and right

Ref let play go on and it was all continuous with no time to really even blow the whistle.

I'm thinking like if a player has 40 yards to rub into and is 1 on 1 and the ref has time to spot the flag and blow the whistle

I'm pretty sure they will have been told not to blow if it looks close

Would be wise to do that
I always think anything unclear and play should go on anyway
I've been against VAR but if I'm open to being proven wrong
Anything that can improve something should be given a chance
I'm just not convinced yet it'll actually improve things

I thought you said the ref called it offside. Did he blow the whistle or not? If not, then this is a VAR success I think.

The ref can chose to overrule the linesman's flag, with or without VAR. Players know to play to the whistle

You said "VAR overturned an offside decision tonight."

But anyway, I don't think there's anything to worry about. If the ref blows the whistle, play stops. Nothing about that will change.

looks good, ref just has to wait to blow the whistle/not blow it at all

Wonder if someone know the answer to this question?

Bought DCL for 5.2, current sell price of 5.3, if he drops to 5.4 tonight will my sell price also drop?
Same goes for Richarlison? bought for 6.2, can sell now for 6.3 about to drop to 6.3

                                            Thanks

If you bought DCL at 5.2, a drop won’t affect you.
If you bought Rich at 6.2 a drop will affect you.

You get half of the profit rounded down

You can take both drops, won’t affect you.

Cheers guys, thought it was roughly something like that
