Scout Picks

Scout Picks – Gameweek 24

Our preparations for Gameweek 24 continue as we reveal the players from our midweek Squad article who have earned a Scout Picks place.

Expensive options from the ranks of Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester City are all facing enticing clashes with relegation-embattled sides, so we’ve had to up our search for budget gems.

This starts in goal with Everton stopper Jordan Pickford (4.9).

He has produced more points (61) than any keeper over the last 10 Gameweeks, amassing three double-digit Fantasy Premier League (FPL) hauls and securing save points on all but two occasions. A visit from a West Brom side that has only scored three goals in their last six road trips bodes well for his prospects.

Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell’s 4.3 price tag also appeals ahead of a visit from Watford. After sitting out the Foxes’ midweek Cup victory over Fleetwood Town due to suspension, a start looks secure for the left-back as Claude Puel’s men look to earn their third league clean sheet in a row. With just two successful strikes in their last four away days, the indications are that the Hornets may once again struggle to find the net.

Nicolas Otamendi was our preferred Manchester City defender for Newcastle’s visit to the Etihad, but his 6.5 price tag proved prohibitive. Instead we have turned to Danilo (5.0), who looks set to start at left-back in the absence of the injured Fabian Delph. When called upon the Brazilian has impressed, with six clean sheets, a goal and an assist across his seven starts.

Ben Davies (5.5) also offers strong value for Spurs’ trip to Southampton, with six shut-outs, two goals and four assists this season. He is also seemingly rotation-free with fellow left-back Danny Rose still absent through injury. Davies’ 33 key passes, which is top among defenders, also impresses.

Such savings are needed to include Chelsea left wing-back  Marcos Alonso (7.3) in our 84 million budgeted XI. The Spaniard remains undroppable from the Scout Picks as the complete Fantasy asset, amassing 11 shut-outs, six goals, an assist and 13 bonus points this season. In addition, no defender has had more shots across the campaign, while no Chelsea team-mate has had more efforts on target than Alonso’s nine over the past six Gameweeks.

Alonso’s threat from free kicks has also caught our eye. Among Blues assets, he has had the most attempts from set plays (16), while Brighton have conceded more goals (16) from free kicks, corners and penalties than any other side.

Mohamed Salah was our original choice here but, while we still expect the Egyptian to be available to face Swansea City after missing training through illness, we’re opting for Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne against Newcastle instead.

The Belgian offers an explosive option for tomorrow evening’s encounter, having served up 52 FPL points and four sets of double-figures in his last six Etihad appearances.

Raheem Sterling (8.9) joins his team-mate in our line-up for Saturday’s Etihad clash with Newcastle, with Sergio Aguero’s 11.7 price tag beyond our reach.

Surprisingly, more than 79,000 managers have jettisoned the England winger from their sides this week. But with nine of his 14 strikes scored at home and the Magpies having shipped 12 goals in their last six road trips, those who have turned their back on him could be left disappointed.

The Leicester attack demands our attention for Watford’s visit as the Hornets are one of only four teams without a clean sheet from the last six Gameweeks. Coincidentally the other three – Swansea, Bournemouth and Stoke – are also the next three teams to visit the King Power.

Foxes midfielder Riyad Mahrez (8.6) gets the nod having delivered attacking returns in all but two of his previous ten league run-outs. He’s either scored or assisted 53% of the Foxes’ goals when selected and also has a strong track record against the Hornets, with four goals in six encounters.

West Ham boss David Moyes looks set to hand a central striker role to Marko Arnautovic (7.0) again for Bournemouth’s visit to the London Stadium, which makes him another shoo-in. The Austrian has excelled when leading the line for Hammers, accruing six goals and three assists over his last seven run-outs.

The visiting Cherries backline looks unlikely to keep him at bay. They’re without a clean sheet in ten matches and have just two from 11 league road trips this season.

Roberto Firmino (9.2) travels to Swansea on the back of an impressive run that has seen him score seven times and rack up three assists and 11 FPL bonus points across his last nine league fixtures. He also has strong form against the Swans, scoring five in his last three encounters, including braces in his last two. It is no surprise to see more than 195,000 managers making him the most popular forward purchase of the Gameweek.

Last, but certainly not least, is Captain Poll leader Harry Kane (13.0), who looks a shrewd armband option for Spurs’ trip to Southampton.

His impressive eight goals across just four starts includes a hat-trick against Mauricio Pellegrino’s troops in Gameweek 20’s reverse fixture. The Saints’ single clean sheet in their last 11 home matches and concession of 15 goals over the last seven Gameweeks should ensure he rewards the 118,000+ FPL managers who have added him to their squads this week.

Manchester United defender Phil Jones (5.7) has to settle for a bench spot despite the strong odds of a fourth consecutive clean sheet when Manchester United travel to Burnley. His bonus tally of 13, which is top among his team-mates, further adds to his appeal.

Relegation-threatened Stoke City’s dire run of form has us limit their playmaker Xherden Shaqiri (6.0) to a substitute’s role, even though he has a kind home fixture against a Huddersfield Town defence that have just two shut-outs from their 11 away days.

Should new boss Paul Lambert manage to revitalise the Potters’ fortunes, the Swiss international looks the man most likely to prosper in Fantasy terms. He has five assists and four goals this season and has delivered the most key passes (47) among Stoke assets. His meagre 5.4% ownership also makes him an intriguing weekend differential.

Callum Wilson (5.8) is handed our final bench spot due to a stellar run of form, with three goals and an assist in the last four Gameweeks. Over that period, only Kane has had more attempts on target than the Bournemouth striker, who faces a West Ham backline that has kept just one clean sheet in their last six matches.

The Community Champion

The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

This week’s champion Tommo1888 has opted for a 3-4-3 line up of: Ederson; Alonso, B.Davies, Holgate; Willian, Arnautovic, Son, Albrighton; Kane, Firmino, Aguero.

in that bracket there is Shaqiri, Ibe, Ox and Albrighty, it depends whom you have most faith in. I picked Shaqiri due to Stoke new manager and those four fixtures is Hudders, Watford, Bournemouth and Brighton, teams that ship in goals so even if one can argue it is green fixtures for Stokes opponent i would think at least there is good chance of attacking returns from those matches. I think RLC out is more urgent, as DCL could be there as a sub

League cup only type of guy, he MAY get a game, but I think Danilo's pedigree/experience will be the obvious choice.

Thanks for posting this. I've been planning on bringing him in all week, albeit a minor gamble on game time. With City's next 2 and a price drop I think he's great value that has been largely overlooked.

Or should I just ditch him on my FT?

What do you think about my plan?

    Adrian / Elliot
    Otamendi, Christensen, Jones, Mee, Mbemba
    Salah, Eriksen, Sterling, Arnautovic, Loftus
    Kane, Firmino, Calvert

in the bank 2,4 - one free transfer

This GW Christensen --> Alonso and play 4-4-2 with Ben Mee against United. For next two/three weeks, Eriksen downgrade for Son (or Pogba), Otamendi for Stones (for City cs's) and Loftus upgrade to Lingard or Zaha.

    After this, I have:

    Adrian, Elliot
    Alonso, Jones, Stones (Mee, Mbemba)
    Salah, Sterling, Son/Pogba, Arnautovic, Zaha/Lingard
    Kane, Firmino (Calvert)

+ some money ITB for Pickford or expensive attacker.

Bottomed twice now. Got 2 FT's and 1.4 ITB so I'm looking to burn one on either a short-term move/upgrade or to free up funds...

A). Francis to Maguire/VVD (Richarlison to bench and then out next week)
B). Francis to Ogbonna as a rotation option
    C). Richarlison to Ramsey
D). Crouch to McBurnie (just to free up funds)

Maybe TV is genuinely irrelevant after all. Look at the amount of good midfielders for cheap as chips - Silva, Pogba, Son, Arnie, Lanzini for example.... only 38.0 for all of those.

Cheap defenders too - Masuaku, Kenny, Chilwell etc all basically free.

      1. Ibracadabra
        • 15 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

TV is important. You would rather have KDB, Sane and Sterling over Silva every time.

You (may) rather have Eriksen/Alli over Son in certain situations.

Arnie/Lanzini have good fixtures/form but won't last forever and you don't want a West Ham double up, etc.

          • 14 Years

Not sure, there are many options even cheaper, Lingard groß, Richarlison, Ox who all score points if you time it right. Those players you mention are individually better

          1. Ibracadabra
            • 15 Years
            6 years, 5 months ago

The key is "if you time it right." Lingard's run has come and gone, so has Richarlison's. Both are fine as 4th/5th mids but won't carry a team at 3-4ppg or so from here on out. Ox will be rotated with Lallana, don't rate him personally but could be wrong. Gross also scored well before Xmas but he plays in a poor team, I wouldn't want to count on any of those week in and week out. Yes, in form, it's nice to catch a 6m player for a few weeks, but as you said it takes a bit of timing, whereas a 8m player (Pogba from the example above) will do it week in and week out...

      2. Licious Lizard (delete acc)
          6 years, 5 months ago

I certainly agree that TV doesn’t seem as important at the moment. Of course still nicer to have Alonso than Chris. Ota over Stones. Jones over Smalling. KDB over Silva etc. etc.
Let’s see how the DGWs turn out. Especially for your B.B. week it is nice to have plenty of cash, when you have to get 15 starting players.
Too late to really try to make up TV though. First half of the season for that.

Seems important to me this week, maybe. I am 0.1m off of Vardy -> Aguero for free... 🙂

                6 years, 5 months ago

Of course. But compared to previous seasons, where a bunch of premium have been performing.
Just imagine if Sanchez, Lacazette, Hazard, Morata, Lukaku were all performing decently.
Now that they are not, while cheaper options are, TV isn’t as important as it could be.
                Can quickly change though.

I hope Sane absolutely kills it for the next weeks and rises fast back to 9.0 so I can sell him even steven. Propably wont but man can dream, right?

I felt the same when I got in smalling GW19 instead of christensen. Made the switch for GW20. 2 points and 4 games later I've now sold Christensen.

Who knows sane might work out and mahrez could fail!

Any suggestions on this WC team?

            Pickford
            Alonso / Jones / VVD
            Salah / Sterling / Mahrez / Arnie
            Kane / Firmino / Wilson
            (Pereira / Dunk / Mcarthur / Mbemba)

Are you not tempted by DDG/Stones instead of Pickford/Jones? Does look good other than that. Son/Pogba/Lingard are popular alternatives to your Mahrez/Arnie/Wilson trio, but your 3 may score more

I'd honestly downgrade Wilson to Ayew. 51% of his points have come in two games. Use the funds to upgrade your bench, which is awful.

I'd also downgrade VVD to beef up your bench. Mbemba > Chilwell and Dunk > Tarkowski (Burnley's fixtures get much better after this week) are what I'd do.

Agree about Wilson. A troll as far as FF is concerned.

Slightly unfair on Wilson. He has only started 10 league games. In those 10 starts, he has returned 3 goals and an assist.

If he played all 38 league games (he won't - as he's injury prone), he would be about a 12/13 league goalscorer, sort of a Deeney or Defoe style character from last year. A 1-in-3 guy. He was 1-in-2 in the Championship.

Did the same before his knee injury. Scored a couple, then went on a long run of blanks. So many blanks that when he scored a hatrick a lot had him benched. Then the run of blanks again. An FPL troll, you have been warned. 🙂

Ha. Don't own him, but if he's on pens, with these next 5 fixtures (including a good GW28 fixture), he's a nice investment. I would bet he outscores Lingard over the next 5.

Ha. Check those fixtures... Won't own Lingard after tonight (selling for Sane or Sterling for free).

Lingard next 5 - at Burnley, at Spurs, home to Hud, at Newcastle, BLANK
Wilson next 5 - at West Ham, at Chelsea, home to Stoke, at Hud, home to Newcastle.

Wilson has his last 3 fixtures against Championship caliber teams and he was a 1-in-2 scorer in the Championship. 😉

He also saves you 0.6m as your 7th starting attacker over Lingard. Won't own either, but if I did, I'd go Wilson.
