Scout Notes

Scout Notes – United and Sanchez in Cup Stroll

Manchester United eased into the fifth round of the FA Cup as Alexis Sanchez’s debut mostly followed the script.

After losing to Bristol City in the EFL Cup earlier this month, Jose Mourinho’s side avoided a second cup shock of the season in the west country with a professional 4-0 win at Yeovil Town.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera either side of the break essentially killed off the tie, before Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku struck late as the League Two outfit tired.

But the centre of attention on the night was debutant Sanchez.

Demanding a hefty 11.7 fee in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Sanchez was heavily involved in Rashford’s opener and then set up Herrera’s goal in a busy, if rather rusty, display during which he fired off two attempts (one on target) and produced six key passes.

The other assists on the night came from Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo.

Speaking post-match, Mourinho lauded his new man’s ‘maturity and class’ and also talked of the main issue surrounding him.

“The question is always which one is going to be out? Where is he going to play? It’s not about that for us.”

It might not have been for the coach, but it was for the rest of us, and the answer was: wide on the left.

Sanchez started as part of an attacking three, with Juan Mata on the other flank and Rashford down the middle, and while there was an element of positional rotation among the trio, with Mata drifting inside from time to time, Sanchez stuck to his starting position almost exclusively.

Too much can be read into one cup tie against lower league opposition, however.

Mourinho fielded a strong side, but that was more a reflection of the depth of his squad as the team contained just one player – Mata – who had started last weekend’s win at Burnley.

Two others, Lukakau and Lingard, came on as subs, the latter for Sanchez after 72 minutes.

That meant we were denied an early insight into how the pair might operate together, although the 18.2% of managers who own Lingard will have been heartened by his goal after their man had blanked three times over the past four Gameweeks.

That strike provided reassurance on the midfielder’s form to perhaps slow the tide of sales which have seen Lingard installed as the second most sold player ahead of Gameweek 25. It also offered Mourinho a timely reminder of his goal-getting talents ahead of his next teamsheet.

Meanwhile, another player whose minutes will potentially be threatened by Sanchez’s arrival, Anthony Martial, was omitted from the squad.

A much clearer indication of Sanchez’s role, and how it will have an impact on his new team-mates, will arrive in Wednesday’s Gameweek 25 trip to Spurs.

Not that this has stopped some 45,000+ FPL managers finding the funds to bring the Chilean into their squads already.

That’s a big boost for a player who was only owned by 146,000 for Gameweek 24, and he’s currently just outside the top ten transfers-in for the midweek round of fixtures.

Based on last night’s evidence, he’s a few matches away from his standard speed and sharpness.

Sanchez was frequently wasteful in possession, giving the ball away 31 times, and lacked a genuine goal threat – he failed to have a single touch in Yeovil’s penalty area.

Those figures will need to improve, and they surely will as he beds in at Old Trafford, but until they do, Sanchez’s premium price tag will dissuade most of us from attempting the budget-bending moves to bring him into our sides.

On the plus side, he took United’s corners and had one direct free-kick attempt saved last night. If he continues to play a significant set-piece role, it will only boost his points potential.

United’s win means they’ll be involved in the FA Cup fifth round, which takes place across the weekend of February 17.

They’ll face an away match with Newcastle in the league beforehand and a trip to Sevilla in the Champions League followed by a Gameweek 28 visit from Chelsea afterwards.

The importance of the latter fixtures suggests Mourinho will again be making major changes to his FA Cup team, with Sanchez probably unlikely to start in that competition again any time soon.

    Red Devilish decisions ahead

With Huddersfield at home and two nice easy trips to Newcastle and Crystal Palace in their next five, investment in the Manchester United attack looks a wise move.

What key issues will you be looking out for during the next game and which assets do you have an early eye on?

Is Sanchez almost certain to be in your GWK 26 team?

What now for Martial and Lingard?

Or could Pogba and Lukaku be the best targets – as the ones most likely to benefit from Sanchez’s dual goal and assist prospects.

Considering Sanchez for HUD, indeed. At least. Still have to decide who will make way between Kane and Aguero. Probably Aguero, Jesus will be back soon.

      Hello
Yes he will be in my side.
I'm at 280k and season is fizzling into a trudge to 50k if I just play safe, so I think I can take a risk.

For me, it's actually not too painful at all - I can leverage the fact I'm not maxed out in terms of owning Kun or having wildcarded, and have plenty in the bank from selling my spurs assets. No real surgery needed - I can do it for a -4 - so I'm going to take the chance.

Plan is Choupers for Arnie this midweek, then Sanchez and a 4.8 defender for Lingard and Otamendi. Sacrificing Otamendi for Sanchez no big deal.

And if it doesn't work for whatever reason, I just sell Sanchez again.

      Team will be
      Ddg 4.0
      Alonso Dunk Oggie 4.8
      Sanchez Salah Sterling Choupers 4.5
      Kane Firmino Wilson

Yah might do it today. Keeping an eye on it - I have a .1 profit on Arnie but ideally want to wait for the cups to conclude first.

Waiting to see how Man U set up v Spurs but looking at Sanchez as potential week 26 captain. Lingard and Martial will be subject to more rotation I think. Probably will do Arnautovic to Albrighton this week to facilitate Son to Sanchez following week

I am but that leaves me with no attacking City cover unless I Kane to Kun.

And that still leaves me with Arnie and Son and I have Lingard.

I could Son Lingard Arnie to Sanchez Chop and 4.5 but its pinning a lot on Sanchez and he hasnt pulled up trees this season.

So while its tempting it feels like a massive punt.

I have DDG, Lingard, Pogba... would like Sanchez but it will require major surgery. So think I will stick with those 3 for a couple of games & see if they benefit from Alexis.

After all, every Alexis assist will have someone else scoring, and vice Versace, so hopefully they all benefit.

Alexis looked very good, and there was a general feeling of optimism among the players. McTominay had a chance, Rashford broke his spell, Herrera scored after eternity and Lingard tried reeeeaaally hard to impress after coming on; which he did. I think Sanchez might as well transform United. And maybe it's the context of unspectacular United that made him shine so much, but boy he's good.

First half, Yeovil was almost just as good as United. Half time studio talked about how beatable United looked, and how no MUN players really stood out and pushed forward.

Last 15-20 minutes Yeovil were out of juice, and it became a walk in the park for MUN.

But they do not play League Two teams in FPL 😛

Well, I'm not everyone. We're talking Sanchez on this thread. He looked brilliant and made some good plays even with players like McTominay. That tells you something. He makes others look better. The Yeovil game just reassured that he's that kind of player who can click from the start and steal the show.

        2. Biancazzurri
          • 11 Years
          6 years, 3 months ago

My argument is that United looked revived and refreshed with Sanchez, who made things click right from the start and was their best player. Was that because of (in the long run) poor Yeovil? Yes, partly, but that wasn't the strongest United XI either, and regardless of decent Yeovil efforts, Sanchez had many brilliant moments and had a positive influence on the whole United ethos. Away cup games are difficult (especially, on the pitch like Yeovil's!), so the 'it was only league two' argument is not that valid. I'm sure now they'll go to Wembley with the 'we can win this!' attitude.

In short, I want Sanchez 100% in my squad, but probably after the Spurs, just to get a picture how he plays with Lukaku and Pogba.

Sanchez is still over priced imo,

He was the main man at Arsenal & even with easy fixtures & there was no rush to buy...

At Utd the competition for Fpl Points will be fierce , Pogba Lingard & defense will give you better value

United is still managed by Jose DaBus Mourinho. Which means that his attacking players need to convince us hard before buying into bandwagon. Kind of like Lingard did a month ago. Or Lukaku/Mkhi in the first weeks. But they don't last long, as we see Manu go back to 0-0/1-0/2-1 matches.

Sanchez - wait and see. If he gets goal points in the first match and looks regular, perhaps. But I will most likely still wait longer.
Martial/Lingard/Rashford - more rotation, get rid.
Pogba - almost worth the cash spendage. If he ups his goal points with Alexis in, he is first in line on Watchlist.
Lukaku - with a even more attacking winger/inside forward by his side, his defensive job will most likely increase. He might get more output if MUN score more goals, but he might also be passed by Alexis on goal points. Wait and see, but so far he is behind Pog and Alexis.

Use your eyes, watch matches, and then decide. All this is guesswork, as the Yeovil game last night did not give us many answers.

So if you don't have MUN attacking players in your team, you should get them in for those games alone? Sounds like a desperate move to try to climb, a move that might prove fatal and leave your team vulnerable.

Also remember that MUN plays TOT next week. It's the two gws after that you mention. However, in those GWs, Chelsea plays WAT/WBA, City play BUR/LEI. Why not consider their attacking options instead? Also, after the two "easy" GWs, MUN plays CHE.

Also, NEW parked the bus lately, so there might be limited possibilities to score lots in that game.

It's the fact that Sanchez is by far and away the best captain gw26 that is making me consider committing minor surgery to get him in.

        I could do this....

Then a hit for kun and rlc to Sanchez and vardy ....what do u think??

Not sure how you so emphatically conclude Sanchez is the best GW26 captain based on a performance against a league 2 side where he didn’t have a shot on goal. How do you know where he’s going to start when Mourinho plays a full side? He liked rusty too so how do you know he isn’t going to be eased into the side - after all, the league is over. Maybe he’s saved for CL?

I think Chelsea vs Watford also makes Hazard a pretty decent captain based on Watford’s poor form and Hazard’s good form.

Pogba is the one I'm considering, but depends on his position with Sanchez coming in.

Not convinced Sanchez is worth the price. As per other comments, not convinced Mourinho is going to let the horses run freely because of Sanchez.

With Sanchez, Matic, Pogba and Lukaku fixed mid/fwd starters there are two spots left to be contested by Lingard, Martial, Mata, Rashford and even Herrera and Fellaini if he opts to play Pogba further forward. Therefore only considering Pogba.

I'm in the top 3K and nervous about taking risks, but I've decided to go all out and pin the rest of my season on Sanchez.

This will require surgery, taking a -4 hit over the next 2 gameweeks, but it involves losing Arnie and Lanzini, so I can justify that.

Alexis can wait until after the Spurs game so my transfers will be:
        GW24 Arnie/Lanzini for Albrighton/Obiang
        To do GW25 Otamendi/Lingard for Sanchez/Bauer

        My squad will then be:
Pope Adrian (the only British pope, don't cha know)
        Alonso, Azpil, Jones, Bauer, Long
        Sanchez, Salah, Sterling, Albrighton, Obiang
        Kane, Firmino, Niasse

What I don't get is why he suddenly becomes a better option in peoples' minds playing for United than he was for Arsenal? Unless the view is that he was just not trying for Arsenal this season?

I already had Sanchez in my team twice for prime captaincy opportunities, neither of which worked. I wouldn't discount doing it again. But the fact remains that he is over-priced at 11.7m unless Mourinho plays him as 2nd striker off Lukaku and we really don't know that yet.

It's a maybe from me. If so then short-term; he's too expensive to give value other than when the fixtures really support a Sanchez captaincy. 😕

i was all for it beginning of Jan. Straight swap Kun for Sanchez when Jesus reappears.
But I've got Kane & Salah. GW26 aside I'm not sure I see a week when I wouldn't see one of those as natural captaincy material.
If I'm not going to captain him then maybe he's too much money still.
I see the irony of owning Kun and making this point but when I brought him he was nailed and a better captaincy option than Kane for a small chunk of consecutive fixtures ending Gw28.
Also Utd don't have a run of easier fixtures - seem to have the most difficult fixtures out of the top 6 from GW28 on. (fixtures rate 4-5 FPL).

Or Jones? Very hard decision. Niasse more likely to score (5/2) Lingard (39/10). But as mid Lingard would get 1 point more and cs is worth 1 point also. But I have gut feeling to try Niasse.

Is Arnie and Son to Sane and Miky worth a -4 ?

Son's fixtures arent great and Sane only affordable if shifting Son.

Thinking Arsenal/Miky as planning for fixtures and blanks but feels a bit punty for a hit.

    Thoughts?

Depends on the rest of your team.

If you can still have a great midfield, Alonso and at least one other premium defender then you’re doing very well.

Most of us, though, would have to downgrade other areas of our teams to afford both.

I would love Aguero but the reality is that once Jesus returns you’ve got that massive rotation headache all over again.

So, I just went with Firmino and Kane and hope Sterling gets me enough points to cover not having Aguero.

But I’m doing sh*te this season so don’t necessarily follow what I’m doing.

I don’t have Alonso so it basically comes down to who I think scores more points

        Alonso and Firmino or
        Vvd and Agüero?
Having Kun gives an added (c) choice but it is nasty watching Chelsea and not having Alonso!
