The Community Round Up

The latest double and blank Gameweek announcements dominated the community’s thoughts this week.

Our Hot Topic posters and community writers take in the ramifications of the altered fixture schedule, including the best players to target and how Fantasy Premier League’s chips can be most usefully deployed.

Elsewhere, the statisticians in our Members area have also been busily preparing for the season run in with a look at the most attacking assets to consider.

Finally, we conclude our round-up with a look at who emerged from Gameweek 31’s reduced set of fixtures in a strong position at the top of the community leagues.

The Community Articles

Our Rate My Wildcard Team Surgery opened up this week to help those who have deployed this chip ahead of Gameweek 32. I start off the discussion with the challenges facing my overhauled team, which is based around using the Bench Boost chip in double Gameweek 34, the Free Hit chip the week after and saving the Triple Captain chip for Gameweek 37’s likely extended set of fixtures.

FPL Virgin dropped by to put forward an alternative chip strategy, which could be particularly appealing to those without a Triple Captain chip in hand.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The season run in became much clearer this week with the confirmation that eight teams will play twice in Gameweek 34 with the following Gameweek reduced due to FA Cup semi-finals.

Andy85wsm kick-started the double Gameweek strategy discussion, which was swiftly followed by Flynny’s post on why Gameweek 34 looks potentially the best time to use a Bench Boost chip.

Those currently tinkering with their team after firing up the second Wildcard were canvassed on their plans by Punty McPuntface, while Bouncebackability put forward a specific plan for those with no Triple Captain chip.

We asked the community for their views on who the best strikers, midfielders and defenders will be for the remaining seven Gameweeks. Viper stripes supplemented this with a specific discussion on the best budget forwards.

Liars Poker is among those looking for new blood in his frontline, amid concerns that Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is not explosive enough to justify his 9.7 price tag. However, Viper believes ditching the Brazilian, who has scored 14 goals in the league this season, is too risky.

Meanwhile, Pooodle believes that Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is cup tied for Arsenal’s Europa campaign, looks a perfect candidate for a forward role. Doosra’s latest number crunching, as delivered by G-Whizz, certainly indicates he could be a shrewd purchase for Gameweek 32.

Another to look at season run in players is Enzo the Baker, who is wondering if now is the time to swerve underperforming premium defenders. Our Hot Topic on the best cheap enablers includes a raft of budget gems in defence to consider.

Meanwhile, Brosstan is not happy with the inevitable deployment of chips around double Gameweeks and thinks it makes FPL too predictable and boring.

We added to this debate on chips by canvassing views on their deployment so far, to assess who have been the winners and losers.  When to use the second Wildcard is a key decision to make for those still holding on to this chip, with Zico Senna advocating firing it up now ahead of Gameweek 32 rather than waiting.

One way to spice up the final Gameweeks of the season would be to take the bold step of removing Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who scored 29 points last weekend and is heading towards a final points tally that may well be the biggest that FPL has ever seen. Pras United is the brave community poster to put forward this potentially season wrecking notion.

Those who entrusted the Egyptian winger with the Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 31, as detailed in our ”rough with the smooth” round up of your latest scores, are especially unlikely to hand Salah his P45.

But could key players, such as Salah, be rested as the campaign draws to a close and league positions are largely decided? Athletico Bilbo details those who may already ‘be on the beach’ as the season edges nearer to its conclusion.

Finally, this week saw Ragabolly join the FFScout editorial team to present the first in a regular series of articles using his metrics and data tools to assess how the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers perform each week. He takes up the role after impressing with his recent community articles that looked at how high-placed managers were geared up for Gameweek 31’s limited set of fixtures.

The Community Tournaments

Anders Lium retains top spot in Red Lightning’s Top 10K Any Season league with Stuart Blakeley in Hot pursuit, just two points behind in second.

There’s also no change at the summit of the FFScout Members League, where Paul Gee has a commanding 31 lead over second placed Heroes and Villains.

However, Paul has to settle for second in the FFScout league, which continues to be lead by Rizwan Chaudhry, who moves from sixth to third in the overall rankings.

Jack Wain once again tops the FFScout moderators and contributors league, while I lead the chasing pack, with Az now moving up to third after a score of 110 points in Gameweek 31.

Elsewhere, I slip down to second in QPR Utd’s Frequent Summer Posters competition, with Zoumas Bloomers reclaiming bragging rights at the top.

A score of 100 was enough for Dan Jeffries to retain first place among the community’s oldest and wisest members at the summit of the FFS Old Farts Club.

Being as I can get 8 out in GW35 as it is, so hopefully 11 with 3 transfers, I think I may change tactics...

    GW32, GW33, GW34 change all three strikers to get 11 out GW35

DGW34 freehit; 14 DGWers plus Salah

    BGW35 field 11

    GW36 wildcard

    DGW37 BB

Anyone else going down this route?

Think I'm going this route. Only concern is is carrying the poorer players through to GW35. But yeah, this route makes sense to me. And should be the route for all those with the full set of chips

Thinking about out, you only need one playing sub prob a defender for a Free hit DGW34 team. Then you can max out your on-field 11 cash assuming you select nailed on players.

    BGW35 FA Cup SF's

    Spurs vs Man Utd
    Chelsea vs Southampton

Which Spurs, Utd & Chelsea players at risk of rotation in DGW34 - Y/N

    1. Alonso
    2. Willian
    3. Hazard
    4. DDG
    5. Lingard
    6. Lukaku

United has just few nailed. DDG, Valencia, Matic, Sanchez, Lukaku. Maybe Bailly.

Those Chelsea players wont be rotated imo. No CL amymore fighting for top 4 spot + trophy. Also Kante, Azpilicueta and Rudiger nailed.

      Spurs FB's having rotation risk.

Chelsea need top 4 so minimal rotation and United need to win something so minimal rotation. Spurs only potential one... Son mainly unless Kane isn’t back

    SOUTHAMPTON REVIVAL?

I know they played a L1 side, but there was definitely something different about Southampton in the cup. Anyone worth a gamble? No reason why they can’t turn West Ham over next Saturday, then the double isn’t too bad. Chelsea are obviously class on their day, but beatable as Bournemouth proved. And as much as I like Leicester, they could be slightly on the beach if Southampton catch them at the right time.

Stephens – we all need one or two cheap defenders. 4.5 with a decent goal threat.

Cedric – finally some attacking potential under Hughes? That finish in the cup was like peak Thierry Henry!

Tadic – don’t laugh. Looked like his old self at Wigan. Got a World Cup to get in form for. Down to 6.2

Austin – could be an outrageous bargain at 5.8 if he’s fit. Back in training. Sounding hungry in interviews. Barnes is my current third striker, but I might find the 0.5 and take the gamble.

    Anyone else?

Id still prefer Morgan & double Burnley over Soton defenders. Most of their fixtures are away from home and against Top 8 sides.

Will be more interested in Austin for 2nd dgw if he can show some form and nail down a starting spot.

Please help. Which option is best because I am in a spin.

On a wildcard. No free hit. Sure there are plenty in same boat.

    Option 1.

Ten x 34 doubles (triple Burnley)
    Four x 37 doubles
    Salah

Plan. Bench the 37 doubles for 34. Triple captain. Make 3 transfers for a minus 4 in 35 to get 11 out, replacing some of the 34 with those who play in 35/37. Tinker over next two weeks to get 14 doubles for 37. Bench Boost.

Total point hits. 4 to 8.
    Players in 35. 11.
    Total double players 34. 11.
    Total double players 37. 14.
    Likely Triple. Mahrez/Lukaku

    Option 2.

Fourteen x 34 players (triple Burnley)
    Salah

Plan. Bench Boost 34. Make 5 transfers for a minus 12 in 35, replacing blank 34 players with double 37 ones. Play with 9. Leaves you with 11 doubles already for 37. So tinker for next two weeks to get best 11 possible. Triple captain.

Total point hits. 12 to 16.
    Players in 35. 9.
    Total double players 34. 14.
    Total double players 37. 11.
    Likely Triple. Kane/Aguero/Hazard

Leaning towards the latter, as really want one of those captains on my triple. But option one is less hits and 2 more players in 35...

Other thing to consider, is option one would need you to move on all your Burnley players for utter filth (Swansea, Newcastle) in 37. Option two allows you to just bench them for a very good fixture in 38 and play them in 36 home to Brighton.

Great post mate. Same boat and I am swaying towards option 2 however your last paragraph does make me think about option 1. My only worry would be building a squad for 37 unsure of what rotation can effect you when doing the bench boost. Also TC kane in 37 just feels perfect.

Will keep an eye out and see which way you go pal. Can I ask what draft you have come up with if going for option 2?

      Good luck

Thanks mate. Actually it's the point about my triple Burnley above that is making me lean towards 2. Plus option one would break my rule of never plan more than 3 weeks ahead, it's too unpredictable

        De Gea Pope
        Valencia Tark Lowton Dunk Morgan
        Mahrez Son Hazard Salah Gross
        Lukaku Barnes Murray

But far from set. I think Willian will be rotated, which is my fear over him.

Far from set as you can see. Given that squad has four Brighton players in it

          Stephens for Dunk.

Agree, well summarised. Same boat here and going with Option 2. The tinkering will be easier when we only have to get 11 out for 37. I can see things getting out of control under option 1 and requiring more hits.

Maybe accept the situation that you're in and scale down your expectations?

Three semi decent weeks (34, 35 and 37) has to be better than one brilliant one with two mediocre ones.

Maybe build your WC so you don't feel the need to max out any week at the expense of another, minimise hits (as they instantly put you on the back foot) and spread the players.

          GW34 - 8 doublers + 3 Liverpool

          GW35 - 10 players

          GW37 - 7/8 doublers + good singles.

Back in the day, before chips, this is how we used to approach things as you know.

You can only work with what you have.

Re Kane as TC, some of us (me) rushed into TC him when he was rushed back from illness in 22, could be a similar scenario in 37, can't bank on last season's returns.

I don't think it's one good week. It's two, with admittedly accepting one shit one in the middle. But your point about not getting 14 doubles in for 34 is a fair one. Can easily still play a good boost with 12 or 13.

Looking at weeks 34 and 35 COMBINED is a good strategy. Which teams have best fixtures out of two in 34 or one in each.

34 and 35 are a pair for anyone without the FHC, balance both out and the damage may be minimal.

Take inspiration from last week, there were a lot of teams who didn't commit to it because they didn't see it as worth it, nailing the C was the key and everyone did well, cover the key players and hope your single players turn up, there's certainly good fixtures in 34 and 35 for singles.

    6. Powell

Nice to see someone else is in the same boat. Everyone else seems to have all the chips.

I think Kane could score 4+ goals in 37, so I’m stlll BB’ing 34. Taking some punts on players who only have one game in 34, but it’s a good fixture... and, crucially, they play in 35. Probably 5/6 spots between Arsenal, Liverpool Palace and Watford. Then triple Burnley will give me 9 for GW35. Lukaku to Tosun or Firmino to make ten.

Is Pope in the England squad because of his clean sheet record and save %ge? Surely that's the result of Burnley's compact defending?

It will be interesting to see how Butland does against Italy, but I'm liking Pickford as England #1. We need a ball-playing keeper for the 352.

Can get this team for GW35 with -4. With TC on Salah vs West Brom.

    Meaning I can FH34. WC36. BB37

    Ederson.
    VVD. Mee. Kiko.
    Walcott. Shaqiri. Salah (TC). Sterling.
    Auba. Deeney. Firmino.

    What you reckon?

Yeah very well set up for it then. Only concern is no Arsenal for their next two great fixtures. You could go Mustafi/Monreal then GW34 go either Smalling (if still playing) or Christensen (likewise)? Or if you don't fancy that I've noticed many people are getting Auba with money ITB to switch to Lukaku in GW34. Otherwise very solid team well done

Yes, that's my concern as well.
The problem is that I don't like to plan transfers as suddenly I get problems with injuries etc. If I will get any Arsenal-players it would be Auba and then switch to Lukaku. Then I probably hav e to downgrade somewhere else to afford that MOV though. I also can see Lukaku go riot against Swansea..But probably Auba is better for the next two.

You'd need to keep cash behind to do Kaku to Kane for 36 (when presumably you'll really want Kane). Otherwise it's an in-built hit, or you'll be watching TOTvWAT behind the sofa.

If you have a free hit left 37 triple is a no brainer. But if you don't, it's a "better" triple in 37 against 2 or 3 extra players in 35. Which is a tough choice.

This is why I'm TC in GW37. Kane is going to be fit and hungry for the golden boot and look at those fixtures to do it.

The impact of a TC in a week where a lot BB will be very minimal, even more so if there's a stand out choice (Kane) that bench boosters C anyway.

TC in 37 will get lost in the mix, probably better to use it in another week when it will have a bigger impact.

        1. QuintonFortune25
          • 7 Years

Yeah I get your point. I'm on WC and thinking of BB in GW34 and TC in GW37 for these reasons:

          - Much closer and therefore easier to be certain as to who is going to play and who is in form.
          - Still a lot to play for, whereas in GW37 the big teams could rest key assets to focus on other cups as the league places could be already decided.
          - Kane factor. Kane highly likely to be fit for GW37 and Spurs have two amazing fixtures, therefore better to save TC for then rather than using it in GW34 on Lukaku.
          - GW37 is incredibly hard to build a BB team for. Just tried what kind of team I would go for and to cover United, Arsenal, City, Chelsea, Spurs etc is very costly and requires loads of cheap enablers. GW34 is much easier as you can get 3 United, 3 Chelsea, 3 Leicester, couple of Spurs and couple of Burnley.

          What's your opinion on this?

I disagree with this line of thought. You cannot compare tripcap vs benchboost in the same gameweek. You have to bracket them together and then see when is better. For example i gain 20 in bboost 34 and 15 in tripcap 37. Then you have to beat 35 between your two chips regardless of when they are played.

My point is if you think Kane 37 will get the most captain points from now until the end of the season then that is the right time to play it. Your benchboost might nullify my gains for that week but then i want to see your tripcap score and if you still nullify me when we add our chip scores together.

For me kane 37 tripcap is far and away better than any other option while bboost 34 and bboost 37 is less clear who wins. I think rotation risks give the edge to 34.

Well. It has already been revealed that they will reveal the rearranged fixtures beforehand GW33 (After GW32 has started)

Not too 'short notice' as if you consider that we've only just found out about the DGW34 games a day or two ago.

It's like saying that United - Bournemouth a couple of seasons ago could be postponed from GW38. It's a freak thing, and there's currently no reasonable explanation for thinking that it will happen.

I find it strange that the fixtures haven’t been announced yet, which suggests that something different will happen rather than all the remaining fixtures going in to 37, otherwise that surely would have happened already ?

    A) Chilwell vs Morgan - is Morgan really more attractive? Chilwell has pretty much made that lb spot his own and is a lot more attacking

    B) Lowton or Tarkowski? If we forget the 0.1m at the moment then which would you rather have? Is a double-up mad?
