Modric well-backed as hosts bid for semi-finals

The last World Cup quarter-final takes place this evening in Sochi as hosts Russia face Croatia – with the winners to face England in a semi-final tie on Wednesday night.

Luka Modric‘s (£9.1m) meteoric ownership rise has continued apace: having been the most-bought player of the previous round, the Croatian attracted investment from a further 200,000 Fantasy managers ahead of the quarter-final deadline on Friday. Only Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe were more popular picks this time.

The Real Madrid midfielder, of course, blanked in the last-16 tie against Denmark after his 116th-minute penalty was saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

However, coach Zlatko Dalic has since confirmed that Modric will remain on spot-kick duties for his country after praising the talismanic playmaker’s strength of character in the subsequent penalty shoot-out.

Modric’s ownership of 46.9% dwarfs that of any other player’s on show this evening, with Dejan Lovren (£5.1m) the next-most owned asset in the Croatian squad. Just over a quarter of McDonald’s FIFA managers have drafted the Liverpool defender into their squads.

Goalkeeper Danijel Subasic (£5.5m), owned by 16% of Fantasy bosses, is another popular route into the Croatian backline that has kept two clean sheets in the 2018 World Cup.

Midfielder Ivan Rakitic (£8.5m) is the only other Croatia player with a double-digit ownership.

The midfield is also where the bulk of the investment in the Russian squad lies. Denis Cheryshev (£5.6m), Iury Gazinsky (£4.3m) and Aleksandr Golovin (£6.5m) all have ownership above 10%, though Golovin was the only one of this trio to start in the last-16 victory over Spain. Cheryshev returns to the Russia side this evening.

Igor Akinfeev (£5.0m), who racked up nine saves in that success over the 2010 World Cup winners, features in 5.3% of Fantasy squads.

There is surprisingly little investment (2.9%) in Artem Dzyuba (£8.1m), Russia’s bustling centre-forward who has three goals and an assist to his name in this tournament already.

Russia XI (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Ignashevich, Kutepov, Kudryashov; Zobnin, Kuzyaev; Samedov, Golovin, Cheryshev; Dzyuba

Croatia XI (4-2-3-1): Subasic; Vrsaljko, Vida, Lovren, Strinic; Rakitic, Modric; Rebic, Kramaric, Perisic; Mandzukic

Wouldn't be surprised if May and Trump organised that. So many corrupt politicians around.

The Russian people are quite friendly. I have a friend that went to work there for a month and ended up staying permanently.

Russians don't have a problem with the English, apparently. It's kinda like England's so-called rivalry with Germany. The average Russian doesn't know anything about the political relationship between them and England (and neither do us Brits to be fair)

He tends to be OOP. He played as a winger/midfielder for Leicester at times, and also for Palace too. Surprised he's still classified as a defender tbh, but he doesn't get enough gametime to cause a fuss.

This will be my first season of starting de gea.

I usually do two 4.5 keepers in rotation because i am stingy and prefer to invest my money in midfield and upfront.

But not having de gea in a mourinho side was an admitted oversight last season.

He was good value at 5.5. Can't say anything for his value this season at 6.0 though. It depends on other players at other teams, and Leno looks decent at 5.0. Fabianski is kindly priced (albeit with bad fixtures). And a Liverpool/City keeper could get as many CS (though probably fewer saves) for 0.5 to 1.0 less.

4.5 goalkeepers are generally the best value players in the game. The worse the team, the more save pts they get. It's all about the save pts.

Yes, I'm fully aware of that but if you ignore positioning, you'd pay 6m for a United defender who plays every game and hit 172 points last year.

If you get hung up on the fact that he's positioned as a GK than 6m seems a lot, if you look at him as part of your 7 man defensive unit, he's the first player you pick, find the Cedric and Daniels of the world instead to balance it out.

            1. Piggs Boson
              • 12 Years

It's not so much about positioning, it's about PpG and value. Yes, he will get a lot of pts, but the difference between a 4.5m keeper and his, is not as great as the difference between a 4.5m defender and 6.0m defender. I have graphs analysing last season that shows this... somewhere...

First, I don't know why you would assume I would pay that. I didn't own any Man U defenders (or DDG) last season. 6.0 is pretty good for a nailed defender United defender who can score goals though, I'll admit. But as I said, value depends on who else is available. If I believed, for example, that I could get the same points for a GK at 5.0m, then DDG is suddenly poor value. I can't compare him to a defender who is 6.0 because I have to own 2 keepers; I can't swap DDG for Smalling. If I can get nearly the same points from a 5.0 GK, then the extra 1.0 could help me fill the gap (and more?) in anoter position.

You were asking for my opinion about how I could think he was bad value if other people thought Smalling was good value? Doesn't make much sense to me mate.

To clarify, I said "Can't say anything for his value this season at 6.0 though" because it's a new season, and we don't know how many points he'll get, nor how many points other GKs will get. You may see him as a safe choice, but I see him as risky because it's a lot of money to spend on a luxury that might be unnecessary 🙂

                • 6 Years

No mate, I take your point about what happens next with him/them, it's the value part I'm disputing, like I say, if there was an outfield defender from United at 6m who we knew played every week, most would be all over him.

To me, that makes him worth the spend.

172 last year was more than Alonso who was seen as a key buy (who cost more) none of the United defenders look 100% secure, if you want United coverage, he seems the only option because Valencia is not worth more IMO.

But this was last year. People owned Alonso in the hope he would have a 200+ season. 172 from DDG was immense, but I'm not *expecting* him to get 172 again.

Even if he does, I hope to find a combination of players that can get more points (E.g. DDG (172) + PvA (118) = 290; vs Karius (155) + Alonso (170) = 325; and Alonso especially has the *potential* to got much bigger, DDG doesn't so much).

Fair enough, I'm not here to try and tell you who to pick, just debating on why he's seen as expensive.

6m for 18 clean sheets last year is about right, if you could pay 6m for a striker who scored 18 goals, he'd be around d 50% owned so his price looks right/fair to me.

Of course 🙂 If he was 5.5m again I'd pick him, but at our level, the game is about eeking out an advantage where you can, and 6.0 is probably a step too far for me 🙂

And arguably keepers are worth more to your team because chances are they will play every single game and not have much in the way of back up. With defenders you tend to have a few options, albeit budget.

I had De Gea last season, after usually rotating two 4.5m keepers. Happy with the decision and will be doing to same again this season

        This is my point.

De gea has averaged 130-140 points since he started and 12 clean sheets

Last season he got 170 and 18 clean sheets.

        Last season mourinho managed him

The 4.5 rotation strategy wont keep up. That puts pressure on your spare million

I don't understand why you'd buy Karius when you could get the attacking threat of TAA at the same price.

Same reason you're not getting a United defender 🙂

Also because of the value debate about DDG. Karius could be argued to be much better value.

Also you can get both Karius and TAA if you want.

Also Leno is an option. As is Ederson. Other keepers exist too.

            Karius same box as ederson

Leno too early to call. Early fixtures no

This is the only argument I personally buy into. The annoying fact you can only have 3 players from each team. I want to save Liverpool, Arsenal and City spots for other players who are better value relative to their respective positions. However, I might be willing to concede one of these spots since I'm not going to be having 9 outfield players combine from those teams.

I also might go for two 4.5s or a 4.5 paired with a 4.0. Fabianski only got 0.2 PPM less than DDG last year.

Why on earth would this shock you? You know Karius is 5.0 right? And Liverpool had good defensive stats (arguably much better than United's). Plus the % CSs stat, which is less important imo, is slightly in Karius' favour.

Keep posted on all your players for transfers ofc, and if you're going to spend 5.5 on one keeper the other should be 4.0. I doubt Lichtsteiner will be a regular starter, Daniels is pants, amd with a new manager Alonso will not be given the same licence to roam forward/ may not even start at all.

It's highly likely that Alonso won't be allowed to do what he's done in the past two seasons that is for sure. Spurs will be all over the place seeing as like 80% of their squad is still in the world cup 😛
