Mata and Martial start as Mourinho hints at Gameweek 1 back-four

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has already been incredibly helpful for Fantasy Premier League managers after the Red Devils’ first pre-season match.

Following a 1-1 draw with Club America in Phoenix, Arizona he revealed who would be his back-four for Gameweek 1.

Elsewhere there were friendlies for Liverpool and Wolves.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from another round of pre-season matches.

Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Liverpool

  • Goals: Lazar Markovic, Daniel Sturridge
  • Assists: Sturridge, Naby Keita (£7.5m)

Daniel Sturridge and Naby Keita (£7.5m) were the stand-out performers as Liverpool won 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers.

The English striker, not yet priced up by FPL, added his third goal of pre-season while new signing Keita put up his third assist.

It started slowly for the Reds as James Milner (£5.5m) missed a penalty following Dominic Solanke (£5.0m) being fouled in the area.

Adam Lallana (£7.0m) was the most influential player in the first-half, supplying Solanke with great delivery as well as hitting the crossbar and nearly scoring a lob on the goalkeeper himself.

Substitutes Keita and Sturridge combined twice early in the second-half, with a defence-splitting ball from the former putting the Englishman through only to drag wide before another was sent just over the bar.

The deadlock was broken when Sturridge was the provider, his pass lashed home by Lazar Markovic.

Shortly afterwards Sturridge made it 2-0 after yet another insightful pass from Keita.

LIVERPOOL FIRST-HALF XI (4-4-2): Karius; Moreno, Klavan, Matip, Clyne; Ojo, Lallana, Milner, Woodburn; Solanke, Origi.

LIVERPOOL SECOND-HALF XI (4-3-3): Karius; Robertson, Van Dijk, Phillips, Gomez; Jones, Keita, Fabinho; Markovic, Sturridge, Camacho.

Club America 1-1 Manchester United

  • Goals: Juan Mata (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Ander Herrera (£5.0m)

Juan Mata (£6.5m) rescued a draw for Manchester United in their first pre-season match after Jose Mourinho, as expected, named a largely second string side.

Lee Grant (not yet in FPL) began the match in goal while Anthony Martial (£7.5m) lined up as a lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 system.

The Frenchman could have had a penalty in the ninth minute but the referee waved away his appeals. Apart from an effort grazing the crossbar early on, it was a largely disappointing performance for Martial, who was too isolated up front. He was substituted on the hour-mark with a possible knock.

That was when Club America took the lead thanks to a strong Henry Martin header.

Having hit the post in the first-half, Mata scored the equaliser. Substitute Tahith Chong whipped in a lovely ball for Ander Herrera (£5.0m), whose header cannoned back off the woodwork for Mata slamming home the rebound on the volley.

After the match, Jose Mourinho said that the back-four who started it, Antonio Valencia (£6.5m), Chris Smalling (£6.0m), Eric Bailly (£5.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m), would all likely line-up against Leicester City in Gameweek 1.

MANCHESTER UNITED XI (4-2-3-1): Grant (J Pereira 45’); Shaw (Greenwood 76’), Smalling, Bailly, Valencia (Fosu-Mensah 45’); Herrera, McTominay (Tuanzebe 87’); Mitchell (Darmian 60’), Mata (Gomes 87’), A Pereira; Martial (Chong 60’).

Wolves 1-1 Ajax

  • Goals: Ruben Neves (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Helder Costa (£5.0m)

Ruben Neves (£5.0m) got his first goal of pre-season in a 1-1 draw with Ajax at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium on Thursday.

He found the net from the penalty spot after Helder Costa (£5.0m) was fouled in the area.

FPL midfielder Diogo Jota (£6.5m) lined up as a centre-forward for the first time this summer, having spent one match on the flank and missing another so far.

The former Atletico Madrid man started 10 matches in the Championship as the striker in Nuno’s 3-4-3 system, furthering his appeal in FPL for 2018/19.

He was the focal point for Wolves’ attacking play in the match and had several chances to score in the first-half, although he could not find a breakthrough.

It was Ajax who went into the interval 1-0 up after Donny van de Peek cut inside and found the net from 15 yards.

Wolves levelled from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute when Costa was brought down in the area. Neves stepped up to smash in the equaliser from 12 yards.

WOLVES XI (3-4-3): Norris (Ruddy 45’); Boly, Coady, Bennett (Saiss 71’); Giles, Gibbs-White (Goncalves 71’), Neves, Doherty; Cavaleiro (Ashley-Seal 71’), Jota, Costa.

Arsenal 1-2 Brentford

  • Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m)
  • Assists: None

Arsenal played another secret friendly on Thursday with little information available on it.

The Gunners lost 2-1 to Championship side Brentford after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) made it five goals in three pre-season matches with his equaliser.

The Bees winner came from a Bernd Leno (£5.0m) error in which he failed to deal with a ball into the box.

Arsenal will now head to Singapore for more high-profile friendly matches against Paris Saint Germain and Atletico Madrid.

    Help me to decide:

    A) Tomkins, Mendy, Masuaku (Would not rotate with Cairney)
    B) Cedric, PVA, Hughes (I will rotate Hughes and Cairney as 4th Mids)

Me neither really, I think he is ROOP but at 4.5m he is just bench fodder really, option B would enable me to have a full 5 man playing midfield, though only 4 would be starting

A for me. Tomkins and Mendy are a bigger improvement over Cedric and PVA that it’s worth playing Cairney consistently rather than rotating with Hughes. Will be a pain to guess when players like them get their returns anyway. Would get Chalobah or Ward (Cardiff) over Masuaku as your fodder though

Lingard was great during the spells when he played consistently last season. Pogba was fine when he played. Martial had great PPM when he played. Its all about value and consistency of starts and someone like Martial looks likely to start and should be a good pick. People picking Sanchez are insane though.

Let's not forget the valuable lessons we all learnt last FPL season.

    1. Never own a Man Utd midfielder/attacker
    2. Never own a player managed by Mark Hughes
    3. Form is always more important than fixtures.
    4. Bournemouth can't keep a CS if their lives depend on it.
    5. Captain Salah.

I like it actually. Not quite sold on Martial myself (but may be worth the risk, similar to Lamela), and I'd say Tomkins is a better 4.5 than Daniels.

I have 5 premium defenders, Salah, and not a single garbage 4.5 player 🙂

I think one or two garbage players is more efficient, it’s important to have a decent first sub, but beyond that you could argue it’s a waste of funds. A back 5 allows getting relatively elite 5.5 defenders instead of a 5.5 mid or 5.5 striker

        1. Brosstan
          • 9 Years
          5 years, 9 months ago

The problem is that many of those premium wing backs like Davies and Mendy are rotation risks (like once every 4 or 5 games they wont play), so going for decent 5.0 players like Hughes, Neves, Kenedy on the bench feels a lot better when they inevitably come off the bench instead of trash like Stephens or Kamara.

Literally picking players out of the air - little thought and not necessarily a GW1 team ....
        Pickford
        Bailly Mendy Bellerin Robertson PVA
        KdB Salah D Silva
        Firmino Zaha

        Subs: Stek 5.0 & 4.5 mid, 5.0 Forward

You can have Chelsea 5.5 defenders if you want, swap D Silva for Mkhi and upgrade Firmino or Zaha, pick the best 4.5 wing back and spend 1.0 elsewhere - loads of choice to suit all scenarios

Totally agree. Combine it with the wealth of wingbacks available & it’s not even like having 5 defenders. And Salah is a forward anyways so with 3 or 4 wingbacks, a back 5 Salah team is more like 3-4-3 anyway!

A bench is only important from Xmas. 2 x 4.0 and a 4.5 will do me until then.

I have changed my mind on that one and will always have a playing bench - will negate the need for -4 hits when the injuries or rotation bites and is worth 20 to 30 points over the season imho

Seeing lots of Utd defender double ups today... not sold on it myself. I had my heart set on a PVA-VVD-Mendy-Douglas-Coleman back 5.

But could see the merits in Shaw or Bailly

    Morning lads

Which premium defences are we currently trying to cover?

(Out of say, United, spurs, Chelsea, city, Liverpool)

My current draft has no united defence and it feels weird....

I'm currently covering City, Liverpool, United with Everton and Palace in their for potential attacking returns

      Ederson
      Bailey PVA Coleman Robbo

I'm keeping on eye on Chelsea, Schemical if he moves there would be a good option in pegs, allowing me to move PVA to Mendy for example. Or if Moses plays right wing in the new formation, I great OOP options which again, will be PVA making way.

If Zaha leaves will you keep your Palace assets? I’m not so sure I would keep Mili, his supply of set pieces would be drastically reduced. Not sure on PVA or their other defenders, whether they might still be ok

I currently have both Tomkins and Sorloth - would probably keep both. In the case of Sorloth, Zaha's departure might even be a good thing.....

Saw Sørloth at 5.0 alright. Currently Cairney is my first sub at 5.0, but Sørloth isn’t far behind him

They will be gone here too - PVA will have no one to distract the other team for him, and defense would come under more pressure.

    3. Klopptomist Scott Jelly
      • 6 Years

Zaha contributed nothing physically to defence, just the psychological pressure of leaving more at the back so Palace couldn’t counter as effectively

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

Yeah I think it would just put palace on the back foot for much longer in games if they didn’t have Zaha there to take the pressure off their defence from time to time by attacking. Would be a great shame.

Still think he’ll stay mind you, in this transfer market they’ll be able to demand ridiculous fees for him, plus he’s English

    4. Duffy Dunk
      • 7 Years

Zaha has been my 2nd forward in most drafts so far, with PvA/Tomkins coming and going.
If he goes, knowing how much better CRY have been playing with him, the whole team weakens.
It'll be like a different team that will need to find a new identity.
I'd only keep Tomkins, if any.

    Made some changes....

    Pickford / Speroni
    Mendy / Lovren / Shaw / Daniels / 4.0
    Sanchez / Sane / Miki / Willian / Ward
    Abu / Firmino / Tosun

Before you slate Lovren......think about it.

    Fabianski/Foster rotating keepers.

I am looking to rotate out Fabianski in GWs 1, 3, 6, 7, 9 and 13 (liv, ars, CHE, MNU, TOT, mci). My current second 4.5 keeper is Foster but is Bettinelli of Fulham a better option for these GWs?

am I crazy with this lineup, especially the defence? I feel there is more value in defence given the reasonably priced options in midfield and attack

    Firmino Arni (kamara)

Personally I don't rate Lamela and don't rate Mahrez's chances at city, but otherwise v good. I'm also a fan of stacking up on defence, it's a huge topic of discussion every year and especially when you have a team like Man City with easy fixtures it's worth it imo.

No! You have to keep tinkering! Let me not let you take a break 😛
-MCI have great fixtures for clean sheets
-MUN's fixtures are not as great for you to double def
-Mahrez not yet proven, Sane for +0.5 seems a safer bet
-Not too certain EVE will click that fast, and at Siggy's price you can put someone nailed from the top 6 (Ramsey Mkhi Willian Pedro Fabregas), depending on which ones their new managers prefer

Can't have em all, punting on Siggy + Martial for the first game or two, they can easily be swapped out for ARS/CHE mids if needs be! Fancy MUN to begin with two cleanies! Mahrez a better pick than Sane imo, even if they were the same price. 😉
