Great Expectations

Potential for Pogba to have best-ever FPL season in 2018/19

Fresh from scoring in the World Cup final and winning the coveted trophy with France, Paul Pogba (£8.0m) could be about to record his best ever season with Manchester United.

The midfielder may miss the first few weeks of the campaign but across the course of 2018/19 there is great potential for him to be an important Fantasy Premier League asset.

A thigh muscle injury between September and November restricted Pogba to just 27 appearances for the Red Devils last season, but he still managed to record his highest ever FPL score of 138 from six goals and 13 assists. No United player was the provider for more goals and only Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) was involved in more than him.

We’ve had a look at some of the reasons why we expect Pogba to improve on that over the next 12 months, even if he will miss the first few weeks of the campaign through extended World Cup leave.

NEW POSITION

The arrival of Fred (£6.0m) at Old Trafford should allow Pogba more freedom to commit to attack this season. With the new signing potentially sat alongside Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) in holding midfield, Pogba will have less defensive responsibilities to concern himself with. Although it must be said that he particularly shone in a slightly deeper role for France next to N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) and Steven N’Zonzi in the World Cup final. At the same time, Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) earned Jose Mourinho’s favour playing as the central attacking midfielder in 2017/18 and Pogba may have to displace him if he hopes to play further up the pitch.

SHOTS FIRED

Pogba clearly has an eye for goal and should surpass his previous goal tally of six this season. Only six midfielders had more shots last season, despite him only playing 27 games. In fact, out of the Premier League’s most trigger happy midfielders in 2017/18, only Mohamed Salah (4.0) and Alexis Sánchez (2.83) averaged more shots per game than Pogba’s 2.81. The Frenchman even registered more shots per match than Lukaku’s 2.5, although the Belgian striker was more accurate. A large number of those efforts came from outside of opposing penalty areas but if Pogba does earn a more advanced role the percentage of those taken inside the box would likely increase.

IN THE MONEY

On the whole, Pogba offered better value than any of Manchester United’s regular starting attacking assets last season. His points-per-match (ppm) of 5.1 could not be beaten by anyone at Old Trafford. The more expensive Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) came in at 4.9 ppm, Lukaku’s was 4.76 ppm while Lingard, while cheaper, had a points-per-match of 3.87. Even if Pogba retains his position in deeper midfield he could still prove better value across the season than Sánchez and Lukaku who are £2.5m and £3.0m dearer than him respectively.

    Foster

    Salah Martial Ramsey
    Aguero Firmino Wilson

    Ederson Cairney Ward Wan-Bissaka

Foster is only there to play gameweek 1!

Attacking-wise, so do I. Also going with Ramsey from GW1 (and will end up flipping a coin for the Auba-Kun decision). We also don't know how quickly Mou will drop Shaw if he starts well. Martial I think won't last long, though. As ever, opinions based on nothing. Hope they help anyway.

Not a bad team... But if you only player Foster one week, your better off playing Ederson instead and put in a cheapie backup. You already have two players you need to shift in gw3 (Shaw + martial)... which means you need to take a hit to get rid of them, if you keep Foster in your team

Foster will only gain 0.5m so I don't really think that's a transfer I need to make. Easy switches IMO for the United boys but I get your point...anticipating an early wildcard anyway. Thanks for the reply

Bailly more secure, and saves a transfer down the road.

0.5 is a lot of cash in the long term.. wasting 0.5 on your bench week in week out is defintely not a good idea

I also have Martial and Shaw, I'd say it's fine as long as youre prepared to use both transfers at GW2 to take them out. Also could always keep Shaw for an extra week and rely on bench if necessary bc theres a decent chance he could hold down his place if he plays well

I see many teams that has Mahrez. Martial and Shaw in them... Isn't that a bit too risky?

Martial and Shaw are definetely a transfer down the line. How many of these player can we justify to have? They might only start the first couple of games and then your in trouble.. So I suppose a max of two, so that you can shift them with two FT's in gw3?

Because just like during the season people don't consider the long term implications of going for one or two week options, they just think of the immediate points and not sorting the mess out afterwards 🙂

as a man united fan i cant justify having shaw in my team , so many better cheaper options , martial if he starts could lockdown the spot because he has something to prove . MAhrez is good to start but that midfield is like a crapshoot , he is the cheapest besides silva and offers more upside , but theres always the possibility pep treats mahrez like bernardo from last year and eases him into his system only god knows

Agree with Martial and Mahrez risks. Could Shaw be the one to stay in the team? If he starts well and they look solid he doesn't have the same competition as the other two

Cheap options for a top 6 team and easily replaced. If you have a bench player who's decent (many options this year) you may only have to make 1 transfer come gameweek 3

Repost from the bottom of the last page....

Looking at team structure I have two options that I am considering.
Premium defenders are £5.5m+ eg Robertson, Mendy, Smalling, Coleman & Monreal.

    A) 3 premium defenders to play each week + Firmino (2 x £4.5m defenders on the bench each week)
    B) 5 premium defenders + £7m striker (defenders rotate depending on fixture)

Firmino should average at roughly 2 points per game more points than Arnautovic/Tosun.
Will rotating the premium defenders so that they only have good fixtures result in 2 extra points a week vs playing the same three every time?

1/2 premium defenders on your bench is a lot of cap space not being used - I'd go for two or three premiums and cycle the 4.5s in as needed.

    DDG, Hamer.
    Mendy, Robertson, PvA, Daniels, Duffy.
    Salah, Sanchez, Siggy, 6.5, Stephens.
    Auba, Austin, Madine.

    - Daniels & Duffy have decent rotation for my 4th spot in a 4-man backline.
    - Sanchez is a placeholder for KDB, as that seems the best option with me wanting Kevin for long-term.
    - will wait to find out who i want as my 4th starting mid with a budget of 6.5m.
    - Austin a decent punt at 6.0 for me, always a goalscorer when he plays and might have pens i think, anyway there is plenty of other fwds to switch to if he can't hit a barn door with a banjo.

    any input appreciated, thanks all.

Your attack looks too light for me. Austin could be great but might not be first choice and having him with a 4.5 forward who won't play isn't ideal, especially as one of your midfielders is still just a 4.5. I'd downgrade PVA to Tomkins and use the 1.0 to strengthen elsewhere.

New season, new team. First draft. How do you guys like it?

    Pickford / Foster
    Coleman / Cedric / Daniels / Tomkins / Holebas
    Salah / Mahrez / Mkhitaryan / Walcott / Deulofeu
    Aguero / Morata / Iheanacho

Double Everton (Pickford and Coleman) is something I don't like. Also, I don't like the price of Salah, and how it cripples the entire team. But, I guess we have to live with it.

The best 6,5 mid I could come up with was Walcott! And, the best 6,0m forward is Iheanacho. This game is bonkers!

Decent team apart from a few things. Not keen on double Watford and double Everton so would change Pickford and Holebas. If you change Pickford to a 4.5, I'd upgrade Morata to Firmino.

      • 7 Years

I like Coleman so I'd keep him over Pickford(higher point potential)

Walcott could be a great option...Similar position and player to Richarlison who Silva got the best out of. Deulofeu could be a good pick also.

The forward line is your main issue. Morata will most likely leave and way better options than Iheanacho.

4.5 goalkeeper rotation? gives you 0.5m to do Morata > Firmino. Watford strikers, Wilson, Austin and possibly Mitrovic all better options in 6.0m bracket.

Wouldn't have Holebas either...signed a lot of wingbacks.

There is plenty of players that I would have picked if they had not participated in the latter stages of the World Cup. Does this justify picking their backups for the first couple of weeks and then commit to an early wildcard? Either way, I really want them in my team when they are fit and that would requires several hits, wether I pick their backups now or go for nailed players. Im really confused about what to do. I also think it is very likely, that we will see a lot of wildcards being used, when the world cup players return to action because people will feel like their team is inferior to a potential wildcard team.

Why an inferior team? There are plenty of good nailed on players with good fixtures who will still be nailed when World Cup players return.

I disagree. But i'd like to see your team if you think thats the case. Because I really don't. Buying Robertson for 6 millions, when you can potentially get Clyne/TAA for 1 million less is nuts imo. That is just an example

I don't think it justifies either of those things. Picking the backup depends on the player and the rest of your team. Planning to WC early seems a little more sensible than not planning, but expecting to. However, it seems more foolhardy than simply building a more durable squad imo.

I agree.. that is why its a tough decision. Because if you end up wildcarding in gw3 or gw4, you might as well take as many cheap punts as possible ´.. Im thinking of Lamela, Mahrez, Shaw, Clyne, Aguero

Could be doable if you have no fodder, have all nailed players, and all the other planets align. I always like to keep options open rather than railroading myself into one strategy.

I rather stick to a plan, rather than jumping back and forth between two.. doing some sorts of 50/50 will just be a mess.. Im pretty sure, that if I pick backup players who are nailed for the first couple of weeks and then wildcard early, that I could get a potential lead of 20-30 points over those not wildcarding and picking nailed players from the start. Then I can justify taking 3-4 hits if needed during the international break and still be in front of the none-wc teams

Hi everyone first year on here I have done two drafts which do you think is best? Any obvious easy swaps or big issue's I am missing in my selection?
If Bailly, Matip and Morata aren't likely starters come game week 1 I will change accordingly with players from that their team.

    Option A
    Ederson
    Bailly, Matip, Tomkins (Cedric) (Peltier)
    Mkhitaryan, Mane, Mata Sane (Stephens)
    Firmino, Morata, Aguero

0.5 in the bank. - Possibly Mata to Lingard after the first couple of game weeks?

    Option B

    Ederson
    Bailly, Matip, Tomkins, Bellerin (Cedric)
    Mkhitaryan, Mane, Sanchez (Stephens) (Hogg)
    Aguero, Firmino, Morata

    Thanks in advance

Cheers for that I was swaying towards that one. Was just going to pick Matip if looked likely to start and Mata easily upgraded to Lingard when he returns was my thinking. If anything obvious screams out to you let me know. Cheers for your input.

No one else starting with Ben Davies and/ or Eriksen for the first few games.

I'm planning on wildcarding around GW 3 and Spurs first 2 fixtures even with a depleted squad look nice.

GW 2 for example I definitely want 3 City & 3 Spurs but that's just my opinion.

To be fair I'm on draft #473 but this might be the one (he says before preseason is over).

      Ederson - Foster

      Shaw - Robertson - Davies - Tomkins - Cedric

      Mane - Sane - Lamela - Mata - Eriksen

      King - Wood - Firmino

Plan would be to do Mane > Mahrez/ D.Silva GW 2. Wildcard incoming GW 3 🙂

Shaw, Trippier, Alexander Arnold possible rotation risks for would only chose 1 of that list. Trippier> Robertson for example.

I prefer Ramsey over Mkhi as I believe he's more nailed...could be wrong here.

      Nice team other than that!

My first RMT of the season - criticism welcome! Nothing in the bank...

    Ederson
    Robertson Coleman PVA
    Salah Mahrez Mkhi Lamela
    Auba Tosun Zaha

    Norris, Cedric, Ward, Peltier

Debating getting Firmino in for Zaha and Sorloth for Tosun, but depends on pre-season for Sorloth (0.5m shy of this so probably PVA to Tomkins to afford it). May also try to squeeze Mendy in. Thanks.

      Goalkeeper and defence really good.

Mahrez, Mkhi and Lamela all at risk of rotation so could provide problems there.

Monitor Zaha as he could leave. I'd downgrade Lamela to then get Firmino rather than your plan.
