Best Newcastle United players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

Amid the never-ending discord between supporter, manager and much-maligned owner, Newcastle United’s 2017/18 campaign was one that any newly promoted Championship club would be happy to emulate.

Having bounced back from their relegation in 2015/16 at the first attempt, the Magpies finished tenth in the Premier League last season and only fell into the drop zone on two occasions throughout the season – one of which was on the opening weekend.

United had the seventh-best defensive record in the top flight (conceding four fewer goals than Arsenal) and the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Martin Dubravka offered excellent value in Fantasy Premier League, priced as they were at £4.5m.

Ayoze Perez, meanwhile, was one of the stand-out budget forwards in the second half of the season, scoring six goals in the final eight matches of the season.

Price hikes for Lascelles, Dubravka and Perez, a lack of investment from Mike Ashley, and awful fixtures in the first eight Gameweeks will likely deter many FPL bosses from purchasing any Newcastle assets initially. However, Benitez’s ability to make his squad greater than the sum of its parts means that a handful of their budget picks are worth considering once the fixtures ease up.

In-depth data on Newcastle’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

First WC draft attempt. Plan to WC in GW4.

    Pickford
    Baines - Coleman - TAA - Otamendi
    KDB - Salah - Eriksen - Richarlson
    Firmino - Austin

    Button - Cedric - Stephens - Quaner

    Bank 0.5m

    Any thoughts?

The worst team I've seen so far. Three Evertonian defenders, while one of them will be benched

And it's not like Everton are going to be good at defending if they don't make any new defensive signings... If Samuele il Grande couldn't make them keep clean sheets, why would Marco Silva?

Not having a 11.0 striker makes things awkward flexibility wise. But more than one way to play. You do you.

People going without Salah saying it’s easy enough to get him in with 2 FT

You’re forgetting that he will rise in price if he tears it home.

Won’t be 2FT then. Will be hits galore

I doubt he will rise fast based on original ownership. But yes, people don't take into consideration price changes. Now he could easily drop though!

I’d hate to make anyone go against their gut... if someone is convinced going without Salah is the right thing to do they should go ahead. As in th eunlikely event that he does blank, and they took someone else’s advice, it would be a hard pill to swallow.

However, my own personal opinion is that going without him is trying to be way too clever and likely will end badly. If he had poor opening fixtures there might be a case for it, but with West Ham at home he looks the most likely player in the game to haul inGW1.

Combine that with last year’s performances and I just don’t get the logic for going without him.

The hardest thing to swallow is actually your pride in this one.

You know the risks and you decide to go without him. He scores in his first game, scores 2 in his second, and 2 in his third. Your ranking is pretty bad, and you’re struggling in all your mini leagues.

But ‘no salah’ is almost one of your core values now. I’m pretty stubborn, and I’d be very reluctant to bring him in.

On the flip side, he is SO much more expensive than last year. Even if he performs well, you’re making big sacrifices elsewhere. And maybe the extra money CAN cover Salah’s hauls.

Maybe Salah is doing great, but there isn’t a single consistent 5.0 to 6.5 midfielder.

Meanwhile you’re laughing because Sanchez is matching Salah’s points, and you have Mahrez as well who is also smashing it.

Yeah, if you start without him & he scores v West Ham I just don’t know where you go from there, unless you worked a miracle & picked a captain that got within a point or two of him. Maybe Kun could do it, as GW2 would also actually have Kun as favourite over Salah for points.

But in the scenario where Sanchez is matching his point,s it’s so easy to do Salah>Sanchez, which is another advantage of starting with him.

It all comes down to your risk tolerance, if you are risk averse I think you start with Salah & vice versa!

It's a tough one. Your team will be unbalanced with him in it but if he hauls and keeps hauling, whats the problem? As risks go, putting him in wouldn't be the biggest one I've had to consider!

Really good points there.. Personally atm I prefer having more balanced team as I want Auba & Kun. So I have two really good captain options IMO so I wont even captain Salah most of the games so I just cant see the value there.. And if goes absolutely mad in first 4 weeks then I can bring him in cuz ill use my WC for GW 5...

Neither at the minute. Jury’s out on Emery’s arsenal for me (I will be ready with a FT for GW3 though for either Laca, Auba, Rambo, Mkhi)

On Kun, I’m going with 2x City mids currently. May yet change back to Kun.. but GW2 worries me. The Huddersfield game is on a Sunday, so Kun captainers face a long anxious wait for team sheets. Then another anxious wait for him to score at least twice (if he starts). Then hoping he doesn’t get injured in the first few mins. Then hoping he doesn’t get subbed off on 55 mins by Pep.

All of those things seemed to happen any time I captain Kun.

Captaining Salah away to Palace for MNF May just be a lower stress option, plus having two of Sané, Mahrez, KDB, Dilva for Huddersfield, plus Ederson or Mendy should make up for no Kun.

That’s how I think about it at the minute, as I say it could all change again by end of today let alone 3 weeks time!

        That’s really interesting perspective. Thanks.

My biggest decision I’m facing is whether to splerge on Serge, or to save on.... there must be a cheap player called Dave?

My biggest fear of going without Aguero is this Huddersfield game where I can see him giving them a hiding. Salah might actually be the best option though, as he’s way more consistent.

Cheers all. I'm surprised at the amount of 'both' on here.

Love the Salah, Sané, Mahrez, Jota, Firmino attacking lineup, I have very similar.

Bizarrely, I would prefer two defenders to Deulofeu & Tosun though, and also would go Azpi over Alonso.

You could have PVA, Mendy, Coleman, Douglas, etc some really attacking defenders in place of Tosun/Deulofeu. Bailly too

I've been tinkering to see how best I can arrange a team that's heavy with City and Liverpool players. This looks ok and obviously Keita is an unknown, but I think hell be a mainstay in the 'pool team and will contribute with quite a few assists.

    Ederson
    Robertson | Sakho | Tarkowski
    Mahrez | Salah | Hughes | Keita | Sane
    Aubameyang | Wood

    4.0 | Cedric | Wan-Bissaka | Kamara

Totally agree on 6 from pool/city.

However I think Keita is a waste of a Liverpool slot personally. He could do well, but consider that Pogba got 6 goals and 10 assists in 27 games last year & was generally criticised on here.

Keita would be doing very well to get near those sorts of returns.l. I think your Liverpool reps need to be from the Alisson, VVD, Robertson, Mané, Firmino, Salah pool.

    Thoughts?

    Ederson
    Bailly, TAA, Tomkins
    Salah, Sane, Mahrez, Martial, D.Gray
    Aubameyang, Zaha

    4.0; Cedric, Quaner, Kelly

A city mid and Zaha could become Kun and Deulofeu, but I prefer this way, defence is still risky. Waiting for clues from pre season on TAA and Bailly minutes

I'm not a fan of Sane + Mahrez - without Aguero you could still miss out GW2/3.

GK is the cheapest way into City backline, I expect them to dominate again. Long term I don’t want two city mids either due to rotation, but prefer Sane and Mahrez with Zaha to Aguero and a 5.5 mid in for Sane. Robertson is the big miss for me here IMO.

Yeah, Robertson is the one player I’m very keen on that I don’t own here. Dilva may tempt me, depending on who City sign before the start of the season. Missing out on Jorginho is good for his minutes I guess.

Hard to ignore price and I don’t like anyone in that range, Deulofeu and D.Gray (providing Leicester don’t replace Mahrez directly) are both 5.5m. Seem better value to me.

    Ederson Hamer

    Salah Mahrez Martial Siggy Jota

    Aguero Arnie Kamara

Before Jose’s comments on (Shaw & Martial) I was on Sanchez..

After them I’m still on Sanchez..

1 is maybe ok, but two is just transfers out Gw2 or 3

Fairly content with my team (for now!!)

    Fab/Foster (or another 4.5/4.0)
    Mendy. Coleman. Daniels. Cedric. Lovren
    Salah. Mahrez. Mkhitaryan. Deulofeu. 4.5
    Aguero. Auba. 4.5

Lovren will be on bench whilst one of Cedric or Daniels plays till lovren is back in team. A great value

Mourinho doesn't rate and doesn't seem to like Shaw so he's a very poor pick apart from a GW1-2 punt regardless.

I'm a bit disappointed they didn't make a change to the game and add something which made defensive mids more viable.

Something like an extra point per 4 tackles/interceptions similar to keeper save points.

    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

I think they’ve made them viable through pricing. Neves, Ralls, Cairney, Milivojevic in lots of drafts. Wilshere & Hughes cropping up a bit too

Would love some thoughts on this 3-4-3 draft:

    Foster
    Shaw, Mendy, Daniels
    Salah, Sane, Richarlison, Deulofeu
    Aguero, Zaha, Firminio

Subs: Fabianski, Cedric, Wan Bissaka, Kenedy

    Keepers will rotate.
The plan is to rotate the third defender (Daniels, Cedric, WB) based on who has the easiest game. E.g. Daniels is home v Cardiff in GW1.
I'd only have Richarlison & Deulofeu if Richa joins Everton, otherwise I'd likely go for Jota.
Toyed with the idea of dropping Zaha to Austin and using that extra £1m on minor improvements.

    1. Cowboy John
      • 11 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

From experience, not a fan of rotating defenders, even less of a fan of rotating goalkeepers.

      Foster > 4.0
      Daniels > Douglas/TAA
