Pre-Season

Weekend friendly round-up: Arnautovic bags brace, Valencia injured

Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) furthered his case for inclusion in Fantasy managers’ frontlines with a brace in West Ham United’s pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Saturday.

Jack Wilshere (£5.0m) made his debut in the same match, as the Hammers were held to a 2-2 draw by the Championship club.

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), who like Arnautovic has been reclassified as a forward in Fantasy Premier League this season, was also on target in Crystal Palace’s 3-1 win over Oxford United.

Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) set up Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) for Liverpool’s opening goal in the 3-1 defeat by Borussia Dortmund in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday evening. Joel Matip (£5.0m) was forced off early in the first half with a thigh injury.

Dortmund had beaten Manchester City 1-0 a day earlier, with Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) and Leroy Sane (£9.5m) both getting run-outs for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Manchester United were also in action in the USA, taking on San Jose Earthquakes in California. Jose Mourinho’s side drew the match 0-0 as Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) limped off with a calf problem. Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) and Anthony Martial (£7.5m) both started the match as part of a front three with youngster Tahith Chong.

Rui Patricio (£4.5m) and Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) made their Wolverhampton Wanderers debuts in the 0-0 draw with Bochum on Sunday. Patricio saved two penalties in the subsequent shoot-out defeat.

A largely second-string Everton side also lost on penalties over the weekend after a goalless draw with Lille. A stronger-looking line-up then drew another blank in the 1-0 loss to Porto on Sunday night.

Jonny Evans (£5.0m) and James Maddison (£6.5m) made their Leicester City debuts in the Foxes’ 4-1 win over Notts County, with Demarai Gray (£5.5m) among the scorers.

A Fulham side that featured Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m), Tom Cairney (£5.0m) and debutant Jean Michael Seri (£5.5m) were hammered 4-0 by Lyon.

AFC Bournemouth highlighted their attacking aptitude – and defensive frailties – in a 4-3 win over Levante, with Jermain Defoe (£6.0m) among the Cherries’ scorers.

Shane Duffy (£4.5m) and Jurgen Locadia (£5.5m) limped off as Brighton and Hove Albion slumped to a 2-1 defeat to AFC Wimbledon. Oliver Norwood was on target for the Seagulls from the spot.

Huddersfield Town and Burnley both played two friendlies over the weekend. The Terriers lost 2-0 to Real Betis and 1-0 to Werder Bremen (both matches lasting 45 minutes) in Germany, while Sean Dyche split his squad for the encounters with Macclesfield Town and Curzon Ashton. Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) was on target in the 2-0 victory at Moss Rose, while Robbie Brady (£5.5m) returned from injury in the 5-1 win over the National League North side. Ben Mee (£5.0m) found the back of the net in this second match, with Sam Vokes (£5.5m) grabbing a brace.

Summer signing Josh Murphy (£5.0m) scored Cardiff City’s only goal in the 1-1 draw with Torquay United.

Our Scout Notes on Monday will analyse the weekend’s friendlies in greater depth, taking a closer look at personnel and formations and detailing every single goal-scorer and assist-maker.

    Hows this team look

    Ederson
    Lascelles, shaw, cedric
    Stephen, sanchez, salah, erikson, neves
    Aguero, lacazette

    Bench, speroni, kamara, zanka, peltier

      C+

Love Lascelles but Newcastle have horrible fixtures (I'll be getting Dubravka in on WC - usually around GW5/6 - think he's a fantastic keeper)

Not that keen on the defence for the money spent on it.

Stephens and Neves won't do much for you, much better options at 5.

    b) Rui Patricio & Richarlison (Peltier on bench, also 4.0 keeper so can't rotate)

Amazing team they're building. I've gone a bit Wolves nuts and bought Douglas and Jota. Think they might be worth a punt.

      ...............Patricio.
      ....Saiss?...Coady .....Boly
      Doherty Neves Moutinho Douglas
      ....Costa.... Jiminez ....Jota

Neves and Moutinho running the engine is amazing for a newly promoted side.

    Hughes or Cairney?

Currently have both rotating but could see me maybe downgrading one for the extra 0.5.

Seen a lot about Cairney being the new Gross due to his team reliance on him but looking at Hughes stats for when he was fit and the fact he's in a better more established Prem team makes him appealing.

I'm not keen on Jota early doors, think he is a wait and see. That said, I currently have Martial and that doesn't feel great either - hopefully Richarlison signs for Everton

I'm trying to look for players that will far exceed their value and be a major bandwagon over the season. I can't see a more promising punt than Jota around that price range. Perhaps Walcott, or Pedro/Cesc, but they seem like trolls waiting to happen.

          Probably sensible.

But then I think back to new players having storming debuts like Petric and Michu. There's probably no better time to take punts. We all know little at the start of the season, and a boring template hasn't been formed yet. This is our opportunity to get creative.

I preferred the format of the previous friendly summaries - they were more scientific. This is a lot less useful - saying Leicester won 4-1 and then only mentioning D Gray as a scorer is hardly useful. What about Maddisons goal? What about how they played, what formation etc. This feels like a step back

Van Aanholt is in many teams, and i had a feeling his goals usually comes late in the season, so i had to look it up. PVA goals last 3 seasons and gameweeks:

    17/18:
    gw29
    gw30
    gw36
    gw37
    gw38

    16/17:
    gw 2
    gw7
    gw17
    gw26
    gw37

    15/16:
    gw14
    gw20
    gw22
    gw23
    gw30

PVA goals come when his position is changed? Is there any cross reference with your information?

According to transfermarkt.com he has played LB for all goals. I think his goals comes late in the season because Sunderland and Palace have been desperate for goals in the relegation battle.

Would not read to much into that ....9
15/16 at Sunderland getting spanked every week and 4 of the first 12 games was in the bench
16/17 again getting spanked with Sunderland until Jan but

Would not read too much into that ....
15/16 at Sunderland getting spanked every week and 4 of the first 12 games was on the bench
16/17 again getting spanked with Sunderland until Jan but still scored 3 goals before the end of Jan so not late in the season?
17/18 didn’t play 10 of the first 20 games so hard to score really if not on the pitch

Think you are reading a bit too much in to it really, seems to need a run of games in a decent team and when he gets them he scores quite a few goals

3 goals in 3 games at WC. Obviously, great attacking threat and if he's priced 5.0 mil ( as he should be) i would be interested.

Would be 5.5 I imagine. They priced Evans at 5.0 in a side that was leakier than Everton last time around, and Mina is a better FPL prospect and arguably player than Evans.

If that's the case, then i will pass. Lot of value in other more solid defences at 5.5mil.

    hi,

can anyone help with how the Wolves midfield and forwards will line-up?
trying to decide on Cavaliero, Jota, Costa, (the 2 wingbacks) and now possibly Joao Moutinho.

    cheers

I'd prefer spending 0.5m on a regular starting sub keeper. Decent side.
