Great Expectations

Mendy creativity could make him essential Man City defender

Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) has the potential to be the go-to Manchester City defensive option in 2018/19 after his comeback from long-term injury.

The Frenchman was ruled out for most of last season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in Gameweek 6, but is fit and ready to go for the new campaign, at a cheaper price than colleagues Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) and Kyle Walker (£6.5m).

We’ve gone over the data to find out whether Fantasy Premier League managers can expect to see the Mendy who registered eight assists in 25 league matches and seven Champions League appearances prior to signing for Man City.

CREATIVE GENIUS

Mendy’s start to the 2017/18 demonstrated his huge creative potential. In the first five Gameweeks of last season, before his Gameweek 6 injury, only Premier League four defenders created more chances than the Frenchman, all of them with more starts under their belt in that period. The Frenchman fashioned seven opportunities in 270 minutes, Jose Holebas (£4.5m) eight in 360, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) nine in 369, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m) nine in 269 and Ben Davies (£6.0m) 13 in 350.

In fact, only three Man City players created more than Mendy, David Silva (£8.5m) with 17 chances in five starts, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) with 15 in five and Sergio Aguero (£11.0) with 12 in four. And despite making just seven appearances in the entire campaign, just De Bruyne and Leroy Sané (£9.5m) registered more successful crosses from open play than Mendy’s eight, with 14 and nine respectively.

Adding a further three appearances after a Gameweek 34 return, Mendy created nine chances and had five shots on goal in 361 minutes across the season as a whole. That averaged out at a key pass every 40.1 minutes, the next best in the City defence was Walker with one every 92.9. Furthermore, his shot every 72.2 minutes was the second-best in the City defence, with Danilo’s (£5.5m) 70.6 coming out on top.

DEFENSIVE RETURNS

On top of Mendy’s impressive creative potential is his ability to keep a healthy number of clean sheets. No side conceded fewer goals than Man City’s 27 last season and only Manchester United recorded more clean sheets, their total of 19 just one better than the Citizens’ 18.

Pep Guardiola’s champions sit top of our season ticker for defence in the opening six Gameweeks so shutouts should be expected. After a tricky trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 1, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Fulham are all set to visit the Etihad Stadium with trips to Wolves and Cardiff in Gameweeks 3 and 6 respectively.

ON THE MENDY

Mendy will be ahead in his pre-season development compared to everybody else. Even though he only registered 40 minutes in Russia, the training he did there with France was effectively his pre-season and because he missed so much time with the injury, his body and mind should be in a position to head back to training with his club and then competitive action without feeling burned out.

ROTATION FREE (FOR NOW)

Mendy was brought to Man City last season to be the first-choice left-back and the Frenchman looks set to make that position his own, especially in the early weeks of 2018/19. The late returns to training of Danilo and Fabian Delph (£5.5m) means that the only cover for the left of defence will be Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m), who may not be at the club anymore by Gameweek 1 with transfer reports linking him elsewhere. Those factors should ensure very little rotation on Mendy’s part to begin with, as he is already with the main training group in the USA.

    Any suggestions or changes?

Daniels is threatened by the new LB which probably signs soon.
Don't fancy Tosun, Zaha is my go to.
You'll need at least one city attack. Get Mahrez for Sanchez and upgrade Firmino to Auba.

some fixtures are very bad - a great attacking defender will have like 1-2 goals 3-4 assists the entire season - so still mostly relying on CS - hard to get one v pool away, city, spurs, etc.
realisticly, 4 at the back generates better options - i agree with you that a 5.5 PVA should outscore most 5.5 mids and forwards.

      1. Stats Don\'t Lie
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

Not only that, but for me the biggest point is that the gap between a 4.5 def and 5.5 def will be more significant than that between say a 6.5 and 7.5 mid, ie the stepping stones in midfield and forwards are much larger than those in defence and significantly more investment is required in order to increase the points reward significantly, not to mention a 5 back formation will hopefully give defensive security and freedom to use transfers on rotating attackers, were nailing form needs to be maximised

or 1 in 3. The point is the manager is saying he won't play, so his game time is more of a risk than for other players.

Right, I am done and going into lockdown this lunchtime until a week before it all starts. Here's how everything's looking in team Bodega FC -

GK - Pickford (Fabianski), 9.5m of my budget but I am sick of losing points taking hits to change keepers. They rotate well, so looking to keep them as such until I wildcard
Def - Mendy, VVD, Shaw, Sakho (Wan B) will start with 4 at the back, prepared to get shot of Shaw if he loses out to Young after a few games.
Mid - Sanchez (C), Mahrez, Deulofeu (Neves, Stephens), punting that Alexis will hit a vein of form, Leicester are there for the taking. Mahrez like Shaw might bite me on the arse, but he looks like starting the season at the very least and will be desperate to keep his place. Deulofeu, form at the end of last season was great, opening fixtures look plum.
Fwd - Auba, Lacazette and Firmino. Very top heavy, but until the top performing mids show their heads, I feel more comfortable relying on nailed forwards showing good scoring form. Personally think City's opening game away to Arsenal could be a goal fest, and liverpool will continue their imperious form at the end of last season.

Yes we have no Salah at FC Bodega, I cannot see him replicating the same form this season, and I never have liked the 'all eggs in one basket' approach anyway.

Strongly suspect Lacazette will play up front - waiting to see on this. If he doesn't I can easily downgrade.
Mahrez is punty, I had Sané instead for a while, but needed the 0.5m elsewhere.

Bit heavy at the back for me. Wouldn't trust Cairney week-in-week out especially as Fulhams pre-season has been awful.

Cairney can be Ralls Hughes Kennedy etc etc, there will be a new GroB/Miliv just need to get on the right one early!

I believe Puel said that Schmeichel is staying. So therefore, yes, the move is definitely still on 😉

i know everyone here is on robertson (almost everyone) but why not VVD?

    - more nailed - i would say the most nailed pool player, more than the front three even. robertson has some (mild) risk.
    - great underlying stats last year. "due".

VVD has been 'due' since he first arrived in the Premier League in 2015/16 - that threat has never materialised so far! 😀

The threat has materialised, it's just that keepers keep saving his headers.

Maybe he should improve his headers then 😉

Bad memories of going VVD over Robbo last season. He's certainly a good pick though.

With the exception of the typical ‘lumbering center half goes up front to miss a header from a corner’ stat, Robertson wins out quite easily. Unfortunately ‘Due’ generally means a player can’t hit a cow’s @rse with a banjo.

Simply put, Robertson plays his football in the opponents half, VVD plays his football in Liverpool’s own half .... nuff said 🙂

Can ddg really justify 6m this season with ederson available for 5.5? Ownership of united defence is the main issue I feel

Currently on ederson but now Mendy has become appealing I’m having second thoughts

Pope rotated occasionally with Ryan (weeks 4,9,10 & 15) is the same price as Ederson + £4m and looks good.

Surprised Aubameyang isn't in even more squads

He's already shown he can perform strongly in th PL

Two tough opening fixtures - don't be surprised if he scores

Following this he has a run of amazing fixtures

Game time is fairly secure and an excellent vice captain should salah not play for any reason

I think he will get 230 or so points this season - what do you reckon

It is a toss up between Auba and Aguero for me at the moment... flip flopping between them. Both could have a great season.

I'd love your honest opinion of this team. Am I missing something obvious?

    Ederson (Speroni)
    Robertson Alonso Mendy (Daniels Cedric)
    Salah Silva Milivojevic KDB (Neves)
    Firmino Arni Zaha

    1. Riders of Yohan

Alonso may not start every game. KDB might not start the first few games. Better options than neves at 4.5 mil.

Stephens is a decent option, for KDB maybe sanchez? Also might want to swap mili for jota/richarlison

Would be tempted to do Alonso to PVA or Coleman and use the 1m to do Silva to Sane or Mahrez.
