More Man City injuries as World Cup stars return to training

Manchester City picked up some more injuries in their final match of pre-season but have been boosted by the return to training of some of their World Cup stars.

Elsewhere, Everton are struggling to live up to their attacking potential as they tasted defeat once again while Claude Puel complicated matters by making a large number of substitutions as Leicester lost to Udinese.

In another Scout Notes article we assess what the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from the weekend mean for our Fantasy Premier League teams.

STADE RENNAIS 4-1 EVERTON

  • Goals: Richarlison (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m)

Another pre-season defeat for Everton may well discourage the Fantasy interest that been building around their squad for the last few weeks. While only Crystal Palace rank higher for attack potential over the first six Gameweeks, the Toffees have now found the net just twice in five pre-season fixtures since their 22-0 win over ATV Irdning – a fixture it is hard to take seriously.

Cenk Tosun (£7.0m) currently has 9.7 percent ownership but is yet to score outside of that freak result in Austria, and both Zaha and Arnautovic are showing stronger form at the same price point. The Turkish international did have the ball in the net in this recent friendly but was penalised for jumping on the defender. Richarlison (£6.5m) was the man who played the ball to him, and he proved the only positive in a disappointing match. It was him who scored the solitary Everton goal on his full debut for the club, where he was the most creative player.

The Everton midfield was never going to be at its best as Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) and Idrissa Gueye (£5.0m) were making their first starts of the summer, although this was perhaps the most disappointing pre-season defeat so far. The loss at Blackburn could, in part, be blamed on a swathe of substitutions in the second-half disrupting the flow. This home defeat to Stade Rennais featured a line-up close to first-choice for 75 minutes. According to local press, Everton were vulnerable to the counter-attack and were weak in midfield.

It does appear that Everton could be harder to trust with their early season fixtures than we initially thought. New signings at full-back and centre-back are now reportedly probable with Michael Keane (£5.0m) and Phil Jagielka (£4.5m) the current first-choice but struggling to perform well.

Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Theo Walcott (£6.5m) and Ademola Lookman (£5.5m) will all eventually boost the squad with their presence, but it is still unknown when any of them will be able to make their first competitive appearance. It was revealed after Saturday’s match that Pickford will miss the final meeting of pre-season, Valencia’s visit to Goodison Park on Saturday August 4, as a result of his compulsory three-week break following the World Cup. However, the Liverpool Echo reports that he has “been on an individual fitness plan to ensure he is ready for the season opener on August 11 against Wolves.”

EVERTON XI (4-2-3-1): Stekelenburg; Baines, Keane, Jagielka, Coleman; Gueye (Davies 75’), Schneiderlin; Richarlison, Sigurdsson, Sandro (Mirallas 75’); Tosun (Niasse 75’).

LEICESTER CITY 1-2 UDINESE

  • Goals: Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Ricardo Pereira (£5.0m)

It was difficult to learn much from this latest Leicester City fixture as manager Claude Puel rang the changes in a big way. Four players who came on as substitutes were replaced roughly shortly after and nine members of the match squad registered no more than 30 minutes.

FPL midfielder Demarai Gray (£5.5m), who has been used as a forward in recent matches was not involved this time around as Puel handed time to five players returning from World Cup leave. Adrien Silva (£5.0m) was the only one to start the match but Ahmed Musa, Wilfried Ndidi (£5.0m), Yohan Benalouane (£4.0m) and Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.0m) were all involved, the latter getting a late consolation goal. There was also a first appearance in Leicester colours for full-back Ricardo Pereira (£5.0m), who got the assist on Iheanacho’s goal. Of those now back in training the only one not to feature at all was Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m).

After two matches alongside each other, Wes Morgan (£4.5m) and Jonny Evans (£5.0m) were split up in this one the latter coming on at half-time. By all accounts, neither one of them played particularly well and one of them is expected to drop out when Harry Maguire (£5.5m) returns to the squad, although he may not be able to start in Gameweek 1. He and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) are expected back in training next week and it appears that their presence in the squad is sorely needed.

LEICESTER CITY XI (4-2-3-1): Ward (Jakupovic 45’); Fuchs (Pereira 60’), Morgan (Evans 45’ | Benalouane 60’), Johnson (Elder 83’), Amartey (Simpson 60’); Iborra (Musa 60’), Choudhury (Ndidi 60’); Albrighton (Chilwell 30’), Silva (King 30’ | Mendy 60’), Diabate (Maddison 60’); Ulloa (Slimani 30’ | Iheanacho 60’).

BAYERN MUNICH 2-3 MANCHESTER CITY

  • Goals: Bernardo Silva x2 (£7.5m), Lukas Nmecha
  • Assists: Phil Foden (£5.0m), Adrián Bernabé

Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) is still expected to be available for Sunday’s Community Shield despite being withdrawn with an ankle injury in Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Bayern Munich on Saturday. He was pictured in a support boot and on crutches after the match but there was more positive news on Monday.

“Riyad Mahrez has been given the all-clear to return to training later this week after picking up an ankle knock. A scan today has revealed no significant damage, and he could be available for selection for this weekend’s Community Shield against Chelsea.”

Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) and Phil Foden (£5.0m) were also forced off the pitch with the latter nursing “what appeared to be a tweaked hamstring”, according to the club’s website. There has been no update on either of them since then.

Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) was the standout star in the match as he looks to make his case to start in Gameweek 1. He secured a brace after coming on for Mahrez, making him the most involved player in goal-scoring during City’s pre-season campaign.

Leroy Sané (£9.5m) didn’t feature, meaning he is yet to start a pre-season match and has registered just 62 minutes so far this summer – surprising, considering the large number of first-team players absent because of the World Cup. Guardiola reiterated again that there is no injury in his case and that he is still working on his fitness ahead of the Community Shield.

However, the entire squad was handed a boost on Monday afternoon as a large number of World Cup players were pictured training again. That included Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m), Sergio Aguero (£11.0m), Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m), David Silva (£8.5m), Fernandinho (£5.5m), Ilkay Gundogan (£5.5m), John Stones (£5.5m), Vincent Kompany (£5.5m), Ederson (£5.5m) and Fabian Delph (£5.5m). How match fit these players will be, considering they have missed all the pre-season friendlies, is not known. Their returns could mean appearances in the Community Shield and maybe even Gameweek 1, although it is too early to tell. If that is the case though, it could potentially change the way a lot of managers set up their teams – although we will have to track Pep Guardiola’s press conferences between now and the start of the season for more information.

MANCHESTER CITY XI (5-1-3-1): Bravo; Zinchenko, Laporte (Harrison 67′), Garcia, Humphreys, Bolton (Bernabé); Douglas Luiz; Diaz (Gomes 67′), Foden (Garre 85′), Mahrez (B Silva 28′); Nmecha.

Now that they’ve signed Mitrovic, I would go Sessegnon. Those two have a great relationship in final third

    Safe. Balanced. Flexible.

    Leno
    Azpilicueta • Roberston • Sahko • Ward
    Salah • Sané • Richarlison • Jota
    Aubameyang • Zaha

    Steel • Wan-Bissaka • Stephens • Kamara

So the first thing to note when looking at this team is that there's 2.0 in the bank. I hadn't actually planned to do this, but I found myself in a position where I felt happy after building my squad and noticed that this is what I had left over.

    Safe ---
Players didn't progress far in the World CupBeen involved in pre-season friendliesUnlikely to miss the first set of fixturesStar players for their clubNo rotation fears2/3 outfield bench players should feature

    Balanced ---
6.5 and 6.0 defender13.0 and 9.5 midfielder11.0 forwardTwo options in each position to downgrade to another price bracketTwo captain options

    Flexible ---
2.0 in the bank to play around withNo need to take hits to afford a more expensive playerNo need to restructure squad or formation to afford a more expensive player6.5 can become Mkhitaryan/Pogba/Ozil9.5 can become De Bruyne/Sanchez/Hazard11.0 can become Kane

    Notes ---
Leno: Started every pre-season game, looks first choice, only 5.0, great run of fixtures from GW3, should get more cleansheets with Emeri in charge.
Azpilicueta: Mr 90 minutes, bonus magnet, gets assists for fun, top 3 defender every season.
Robbertson: New goalkeeper for Liverpool, should get more cleansheets this season, safe from rotation, attacking fullback.
Sakho: Bonus king, only 5.0, safe from rotation, dangerous from set pieces, fantastic fixtures, Woy in charge.
Ward: Burnley defender, solid and organised, hard to play against, only 5.0, loves bonus, great fixtures.

Salah: It's Salah. Egyptian King. Captain all season.
Sané: Didn't go to the World Cup, fresh legs, point to prove, should feature for all of City's first few fixtures, can become Eriksen/Mane/De Bruyne when rotation starts.
Richarlison: Reunited with Silva, attacking manager, playing in a front 3, Everton have fantastic fixtures, played amazing for Watford at the beginning of last season.
Jota: 21 goals and 5 assists last season, playing in a front 3, on set pieces, great pre-season, Wolves will do well in the PL.

Aubameyang: Excellent at the end of last season, smashing pre-season, in the form of his life, could win the golden boot, Arsenal will improve massively under Emeri.
Zaha: Playing as a centre forward, good at creating chances, gets lots of assists, only 7.0, fantastic fixtures, great pre-season, could score 15-20 this year.

Sané is actually yet to feature in pre-season, so unless he starts in the Community Shield I can swap him for Mahrez, which would then put my bank up to 2.5

I agree with most of it....not sure Sane (or any city mid) is safe.
Leno seems a gamble and horrible fixtures to begin, making Auba undesirable for now...imo.

      Some quick things hit me:

Your 8th attacker should be nailed, Kamara isn't.
      Jota 18G 6A according to Transfermarkt. (not 21G 5A)
Zaha has mostly been playing on the wing or behind Sorloth in pre season. (not centre forward)

I tend to agree on this approach, and think that this is a viable strategy -- getting the big guns, and surround them with value picks. It is the general strategy in most fantasy sports, and in this sport, it's a little weird cos there are just so few goals scored. You basically have 3 big attackers, the rare Salah, Kane, Kun trio, and then a relatively expensive defense. Bailly and Luiz might be a bit uncertain, yet seem to be current coaching faves. Cedric playing every game would not be desirable, yet if W-B plays regularly, you have flex there.

    Dilva or Bilva + 1m

Bilva in great form and match fit.

Dilva back in training today ( will he be fully match fit after quite rightly spending time with family) and Pep has said hex will not play so many games this season.

Factor in Mahrez knock which appears not to be serious and lack of Sané fitness according to Pep. All the evidence seems to suggest Bilva best City option for opening weeks all the more so if grabs another goal in CS at weekend.

Its so interesting to witness this strange phenomen at work where for one time a year players such as Zaha, Arnie, Mhki become desirable to fantasy managers and RMTs are full of them. Its so powerful infact that people will even pick players who dont even start in the first place or that they know absolutely nothing about.
Its fascinating, I think its like some derivative of meme theory where the community is creating its own version of reality and in this reality these chosen players always start and will score many many goals.

I don’t think these are bad picks individually as, say, a 6th attacker, but I agree the problem comes when these players are your 3rd and 4th best attackers and you’re also playing 2 of Cairney, Hughes, Jota and Richarlison every week. Seems to be a bit of wishful thinking in order to facilitate owning Salah.

Good list, I agree on most of them. Add Robertson and Richarlison.

From that list, I like Ederson, Tomkins, Salah, Mane, Eriksen, Aguero and Zaha a lot as picks to start the season.

Richarlison doesnt really fill me with confidence. His finishing was awful last second half of last season. Everton have been generally quite poor pre season. I get they have strong opening fixtures on paper and he is reunited with silva but for almost everyone putting him in their team based on one goal in preseason seems way too much of a punt?

I understand your concerns, and as a pick to start it has for sure its "speculative" part.

          But yes:
          - Great fixtures
          - 100% nailed, Marco Silva seems to deposit a lot of confidence in him
          - Difficult to ignore the Richarlison - Marco combo last year --> Richarlison wants to score and assist and Marco would do what it takes to provide him the best means to score and assist.

With this, I consider he is worth the 6.5m

I have to be brave and leave him out of my gw1 squad. My gut feeling is he wont get as much of a look in at everton as he did at watford but yes I understand where your coming from

Im fairly settled now on this 442 lineup

            Ederson
            Azpilicueta
            Ward
            Robertson
            Tomkins
            Eriksen
            Mane
            Salah
            Mahrez
            Zaha
            Arnautovic

Pretty sure all will start and looks well balanced

              Tomkins; Robertson; Bailly
              Salah; Mane; Richarlison; Costa; Eriksen

Personally not keen on any man u players until iv seen how they perform in the first few weeks particularly the defence. Dont know much about costa tbh. The rest looks decent and solid for gw1. Im keeping a close eye on richarlison. He could blank first two game weeks but could very easily rack up serious points. He can go missing in games or completely run them

                    Cheers.

I was on Coleman before Bailly, but I lost some confidence in him to be honest. I'll closely monitor Luiz however. If he looks nailed, I can consider bring Luiz in and Bailly out.

Costa - I think he did a good pre-season, great attacking threat and my guess is that he will be awarded some decent game time. At 5.0m, it seems a good punt, I think he can surprise.

Kun - Brought Kun in after I read that Sane and Firmino may not be >90% nailed to start. I made a switch to Mane and Kun. Aguero seems a good option to City attack for now, while there is a great uncertainty on mids. If Sane or Mahrez (any of them) look nailed and in form, than I'll bring one of them and then bring Auba for Kun.

                    That was my reasoning mate...

True! Maybe if Mitro comes at 6.0m I'll downgrade Zaha and upgrade Bailly to Azpi.

Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on Eriksen? Worth to start? I do not see him a lot on the drafts.

For me he is a good pick to be honest to start the season - easier fixtures than Arsenal and City (GW1 and GW2 I would say), 100% nailed, should assume Spurs' attack.

Initially I wasn't considering any Spurs but now I think Eriksen's price-freeze has gone under the radar. He scored 200 points last season (and the season before) and, statistically, was unlucky not to have got a bunch more assists. He is *at least* 0.5 under-priced. It's not the ideal start to the season for them, but he was absolutely hammering free-kicks against Barca and he's as nailed as they come.

Agree. Thank you for the analysis.

At least to start I really think he is very worth. If we are proven wrong, it is a very easy switch to one of City's mids for instance.

I am on Mane, Salah Eriksen and Kun to start the season (at least for now!). Let's see!

Why so much love for Arnautovic and Zaha?

They scored 144 and 136 points last year as midfielders. I don’t have a spreadsheet with me, but surely someone can say what they’d have scored if they were forwards last year and not mids. 120?

Gross was up at 160, Doucoure and Milivojevic got the same as Arnautovic and Zaha, all three cost less than 7m

Azpi, Alonso, Otamendi, Davies, Walker, Valencia, Vertonghen all scored between 138 and 175 and all cost less than 7m.

Zaha missed some time at start of last season and Arnie got a early red in the season and only came into form around November when Moyes came in so their points potential is so much higher this time around

Why isn't anyone picking Gomez from Pool given Klopp's recent comments about him, along with Matip's injury. "Joe Gomez, playing in that role as a central defender, he combines a lot of things you don't find on the transfer market so I don't see the need at the moment." Given that Lovren will be back late and the right back position will be rotated between Clyne and TAA at the same price point, I think Gomez is a great differential pick to start the season. I think he can nail down the CB position alongside VVD with a couple of good performances. He has been very impressive when he has played there for England, and its not like Lovren is anything special.

Because hes 5 million, and will start the opening gameweek. The right back position for Liverpool on the other hand is anyones guess. I would like to get VVD (already have Mane and Salah) but cant afford him so went for Gomez as hes 1 million cheaper

I get your point of wanting to be a bit different but I wouldn't advise being different for the sake of it, especially from the off and even more so with your 3 liverpool picks.

Salah and Robertson are two great picks in my eyes. Lovren/Gomez will offer next to nothing offensively where as Robertson is a proven assist maker. Sure you could double up on their defence but when they're so free scoring why would you do that instead of a double up on their offensive players?
