Jonny to improve Wolves defence at expense of attacking returns

New loan signing Jonny Castro (£4.5m) could increase Wolves’ clean sheet potential in 2018/19 but is unlikely to be as attack-minded as predecessor Barry Douglas.

Fantasy Premier League managers may have to turn to other options in the Wolves defence for goals and clean sheets but Jonny’s presence could bring out the best in his team-mates.

The Spaniard could also do well when it comes to the Bonus Points System.

We’ve had a detailed look at the on-loan Atletico Madrid left-back as we prepare for Gameweek 1…

THE HISTORY

24-year-old Jonny Castro is considered to have been one of the most reliable full-backs in La Liga for the last few years.

Used mostly on the left in a four-man defence at Celta Vigo, he is also capable of playing at right-back or even centre-back if needed. His strengths lie in his tackling, interceptions, strong work ethic and consistency.

During his six-year spell in Vigo’s first team, Jonny garnered experience playing at continental level as well as against Real Madrid and Barcelona on a regular basis. He was part of the group that made it to the Europa League semi-finals in 2016/17, which were knocked out by eventual champions Manchester United.

His reliable form during his Celta Vigo career earned him a permanent move to Atletico Madrid this summer, before a loan move to Wolves was completed earlier this month.

The main reason Jonny hasn’t quite been able to break into the Atletico first team is because of some high-quality competition for places. Left-back Lucas Hernandez has impressed hugely of late and went on to play a big part in winning the World Cup. The Frenchman’s back-up Filipe Luis also featured for Brazil in Russia while the options at right-back in Sime Vrsaljko and Juanfran would be hard for many to displace.

A loan move to Wolves certainly makes sense for all parties, especially with the Midlands club offloading Barry Douglas to Leeds United.

However, expecting Jonny to play a similar role in Nuno Espirito Santo’s team to Douglas would be a naive assumption. In fact, the Spaniard looks to be almost the antithesis of his predecessor. While Douglas was very much the typical modern full-back, making marauding runs up and down the left-flank and whipping balls into the box, Jonny is more the old-fashioned type. He specialises in tackles and interceptions and not much more.

THE PROSPECTS

Jonny Castro is more likely to accrue his Fantasy points through defensive contributions than offensive ones in 2018/19. As you will see from the comparison above, his potential for goals and assists are considerably lower than his new colleagues. Only Ryan Bennett (£4.0m) managed fewer shots per game last season, and it was the same for efforts in the box too.

That’s why he managed just two goals and one assist in 2017/18 while Douglas contributed five and 14 respectively on Wolves’ way to winning the Championship. With the Scot now surprisingly moved on to Leeds United, his opposite number on the right-flank Matt Doherty (£4.5m) easily looks like the most offensive FPL defender on offer from the Wolves squad, with 0.5 shots per game and an average of one chance created. It would be hard for Jonny to match these numbers.

However, where Jonny can excel is improving Wolves’ clean sheet potential, possibly picking up some bonus points along the way. As you will see from the table above, no Wolves defender matched his interceptions per match last season – in fact, his total of 93 was better than any stopper in the Premier League in 2017/18. Meanwhile, only Willy Boly (£4.5m) won more tackles per match and only Conor Coady (£4.5m) and Bennett boasted higher pass completion.

All three of the above statistics count towards the BPS so when Wolves do keep clean sheets, which they would theoretically be more likely to with him in the team, Jonny look set to be one of the beneficiaries for additional points.

The biggest impact Jonny will have on FPL though will probably be to unlock the potential of the more attack-orientated players around him. At both Celta Vigo and in the Spain Under-21s squad he was often used to provide a defensive foundation to allow creative freedom further up the pitch. So at Wolves we could see midfield options such as Ruben Neves (£5.0m) or Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) being more involved in goals and assists knowing Jonny’s strengths. Furthermore, Doherty becomes a more attractive option as his attacking returns will now be backed up by a heightened clean sheet potential.

The only concern for Wolves could be a lack of balance in their 3-4-3 formation. If opposition players know that Jonny is unlikely to venture forward on the left but Doherty will be doing so on the right, there is an obvious area to exploit. If this is something Nuno is worried about he could deploy Jonny in the back-three, where he is capable. However, in his first pre-season appearance for Wolves, the new loan signing was used on the left of midfield.

Hi all - would appreciate some advice on this team (thanks in advance!) - £1.5m in bank.

    Beg / Guaita (rotate)
    Azpi / TAA / Tomkins / Daniels / Cedric
    Mane / Sane / Neves / Milivojevic / Richarlison
    Firmino / Auguro / Arnau

A lot of better options than Milli imo. Unsure on neves - a defensive player by the sounds of it. Sané/Aguero possible rotation victims

Beg / Guaita (rotate) - gash
TAA - unlikely to start GW1
Daniels - will lose his place
Cedric - may not start GW1
Neves / Milivojevic / Richarlison - very week
      Firmino - may not GW1

Maybe I could bin Neves, Mili and Rich and get a really good MID and a cheap (but starting) mid for bench?

I think I would down grade either Firmino or Aguero (to a 6.5/7.0) and get a premium mid for Mili

e.g. think about something like ...
          Firmino + Mili
          or
          Eriksen + Zaha

          ??

How so? They're the best options in the market. Zaha, one of the 2 best 7.0 forwards (sorry Tosun), AWB best 4.0 defender and PVA with great attacking threat amongst the 5.5s.

Doing my best to minimise my defence budget (currently at £34mil including GKs), any thoughts:

    3-4-3

GK: Alisson (set & forget) & Speroni (bench fodder)

Def: Mee & Robertson (set & forget), Tomkins & Castro (rotational partnership) then Wan-Bissaka (bench fodder)

        5 years, 9 months ago

I haven't seen any stats to back that statement up, and that would depend on your formation. Imo with all the uncertainties for the first 2-4 GWs, I would rather allocate more funds to my midfield and forward positions because I believe these positions have a higher points ceiling than defenders in general and less risk.

    2. The Big Fella
      • 7 Years

I think that is a solid defence and would keep it. I'd debate choosing between Robertson and Alisson to spread the risk instead of having them both but I wouldn't change the values

I remember having Mendy as set and forget last season but then he got injured and missed the majority of the season. Yes, he might not get injured this season, but IMO you should always have a decent bench.

I think he'll be pretty good, but not nearly as good over the season as Arnautovic - who is just .5m more

I think he'll do similar to Wood (ergo same price), but Burnley are veterans in the game 🙂

      Afternoon all,

      Would really appreciate any feedback on my team;

      Ederson Speroni
      Coleman Robertson Shaw Cedric Bednarek
      Mane Salah Mkhi Jota Stephens
      Kun Zaha Tuson

      0.0 ITB.

Really could so with some suggestions as I'm really not happy with Mkhi / Shaw but no idea who else to get in at these prices.

      Thank you !

I would swap Tosun for the same priced striker who's been banging them in pre season personally.

        Shaw to PVA?

I think Mhki is a good pick

Shaw out for a Burnley defender
I'd sell Coleman (Everton look shite)
Not a fan of Mane as an FPL pick
Tson for the same reason as Coleman

6.04, 6.26, 5.54 and 5.78 PP90 for Mane in the last 4 seasons. Seems like a good and consistent rate of return to me. What don’t you like about him?

I don't know what those numbers mean. He gets subbed off a lot and I don't think he was amazing last year (Salah was the main man). He certainly wasn't bad but there were better players for his price and there are this year too.

The numbers are his points per 90 minutes played. The point about him being subbed off last season is fair. However, I’m sure you’ll agree that he’ll still rack up a large number of goals and assists this season.

Salah will almost certainly outscore Mane again in FPL this year, but I’m not convinced that it’s going to be worth losing 13m on one player. For example, seeing that Mane plus KDB is the same price as Salah plus Richarlison/Jota really puts me off Salah.

If Everton sort their stall out, I think Salah + Richarlison will outscore KDB and Sane. However, we are both predicting which means either of us could be wrong. Salah has also only had one good season, might be a bit tougher second time round.

Some good value midfielders at 6.5...you could move Mkhi for the likes of Pedro and use that .5 to upgrade Shaw. Having a hard time rostering any ARS players in the first two weeks.

        Just a thought.

Weeks of tinkering has left me here, let me know your thoughts if you don't mind:

      Pickford - Baruc (I like Pickford's fixtures)
Azpi - VVD - PVA - Malone - Stephens (Premium defenders with 4.0 bench fodder, lack of depth a possible issue)
Jota - Salah - Eriksen - Richarlison (Can't afford not rostering Salah and like Richarlison and Jota as 6.5 value plays)
Aguero - Zaha - Arnautovic (Solid forward line although worried that both Zaha and Arnie are a bit too trendy right now, plan would be to switch to Auba week 3)

      Thanks in advance, lads.

Not with the control you're probably after.

You could use Excel and do it manually

You can start a Classic League any week you like, so can't see why you couldn't do it with a head to head league. Not sure about having it finish before 38 though. Unless you do it as a knockout and manually remove losing teams.

Never thought of the solution to manually remove people and manually “end” the tournament. Although not sure How it works with meeting new/random opponents.

        Lacking a Chelsea defence?

        Pretty template-y, so solid enough.

For an excess of Chelsea defence, see mine:

        Patricio (Stek)
        Azpi, Luiz, Emerson, Mendy, Otamendi
        Salah, Mane, Bilva (Neves, Cairney)
        Firmino, Arnie (Sorloth)

If Chelsea get a 5m keeper he'll be in and Emerson downgraded. Emerson could change anyway when we see the CS line-up, but I'm sure I can manage to retain 3 Chelsea at the back.

I don’t know much more than the report, but looks like an attacking mid.

The big problem with all these promoted sides is that the PL is so much more tougher than the Championship and we really don’t know how they will do ... I will be going safe for the first few weeks until it all settles down then maybe dip in to the pot 🙂

I will be following the local press, so like last season with Swansea, will chip in on Cardiff if I can

I'm not sure how comparing Jonny's performances with Athletico to his Wolves team mates in a completely different side, formation and league can reach the conclusion that he is less attacking than Doughty on the opposite flank!

If he's technically more gifted, then he might end up being the stand out option when pushed further forward as a wingback? Also, given that Douglas was sold to Leeds (with lack of pace rumoured to be the main reason), you'd have thought his replacement would be already scouted and known to offer an improvement?

I'd rather take a punt on an unknown quantity (Jonny) than a lacklustre known quantity (Doughty).

      Any feedback on this lot:

      Ederson / Speroni
      Robbo, Bailey, Ward, Zanka, WB
      Salah, Mkhitaryan, Richarlison, Cairney, Neves
      Aguero, Arnie, Auba

If it turns out Bailey is not nailed (can't see how that would be the case when the alternatives are Jones and Smalling) then it is easy to change to another 5.5m defender.

Not sure about Richarlison but also not sure who I could get in his place at that price +/-
