Another Sessegnon warning as Brady recovery drags on

Burnley continue to struggle with injury this pre-season as Robbie Brady suffered another setback in his recovery.

His expected absence should make it easier to predict who will start on the wings for them in Gameweek 1 but questions still remain over their goalkeeper situation.

Elsewhere, there was another stern warning for those invested in Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m).

ATLETICO BILBAO 1-3 FULHAM | FULHAM 0-0 FIORENTINA

  • Goals: Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m), Aboubakar Kamara (£4.5m), own-goal
  • Assists: Jean Michaël Seri (£5.5m), Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m)

The trio of goals scored against Atletico Bilbao ended a run of three goalless matches for Fulham as Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) finally involved himself in attacking returns this summer. It was his cross that Yeray Álvarez directed into his own net towards the end of the first of two Cup of Traditions matches. However, there was further confirmation that Sessegnon offers much less in terms of attacking potential when playing at left-back. He was used there in the second match of the afternoon, for the second time in pre-season, and had little influence on the game. The 12.1 percent of Fantasy managers who currently own the 18-year-old should make themselves aware of that and keep an eye on new signing Maxime Le Marchand (£4.5m) – any injury or suspension to him could force Sessegnon back into defence this season.

These two matches saw new signing Fabri (£4.5m) make his first appearances in goal, and give us a chance to see whether he could take the number one jersey from Marcus Bettinelli (£4.5m) this season. Of particular note was the former Besiktas man’s distribution, able to easily find his full-backs and get play moving well from the back. According to local press, this is an area that Bettinelli has struggled with in the past which could hand the advantage to Fabri, who also has experience of playing Champions League football too.

In front of him in the first match, we saw Le Marchand, Tim Ream (£4.5m), Denis Odoi (£4.5m) and Cyrus Christie (£4.5m) line up as the back-four for the third time in pre-season. No other combination has been used as often by Slaviša Jokanović during the summer, suggesting – barring any further recruitment – they will start at Craven Cottage when Crystal Palace come to visit on August 11.

Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m) has done his chances of featuring from the beginning in that match no harm after a decent display in these friendlies. The DR Congo international faces competition for a start on the flanks of the front-three from Sessegnon and Andre Schürrle (£6.0m), who made his first appearance for Fulham against Fiorentina, but is currently the club’s top-scorer in pre-season and with more minutes in the bank than Schürrle. However, the German World Cup winner reportedly impressed in his 45-minute spell in the Cup of Traditions final and, as the new signing, is expected to also be in with a strong shout of starting Gameweek 1.

FULHAM XI vs BILBAO (4-3-3): Fabri; Le Marchand, Odoi, Ream, Christie; Johansen, Seri, Cairney; Sessegnon, Kamara, Kebano.

FULHAM XI vs FIORENTINA (4-3-3): Fabri; Sessegnon, Odoi, Ream, Christie; McDonald, Johansen, Seri; Kebano, Kamara, Schürrle.

BURNLEY 0-0 MONTPELIER

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

Robbie Brady’s (£5.5m) recovery from injury hit a setback in Burnley’s latest pre-season match, a 0-0 draw with Montpelier. The former Hull City man has been on his way back from a knee injury sustained in December but was forced off with a hamstring problem just before half-time on Sunday. Manager Sean Dyche has sought to ease fears that Brady will be on the sidelines for some time, which should be of interest to Fantasy managers aware of the Irishman’s potential this season.

“It was a very minor thing in his hamstring so we took him off immediately. He’s been out for a while, so we don’t want any secondary injuries if we can help it.” – Sean Dyche

Regardless of how much of a setback this proves to be for Brady, his withdrawal strengthens the case for investment in either Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.om) or Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) – the two wingers who started against Aberdeen last week. The Icelandic international has one goal to his name in pre-season and is the key man for set-pieces while Lennon has found the net twice so far this summer and is £1.0m cheaper.

Burnley are still waiting on an update on Nick Pope’s (£5.0m) dislocated shoulder, with him having seen a specialist this week. With Tom Heaton (£5.0m) carrying a calf strain, the prospects of the Clarets’ defence are somewhat up in the air. There is no return date set for either him or Pope yet with Anders Lindegaard the most likely stand-in so far. It may be difficult to invest in £5.0m defenders like James Tarkowski or Ben Mee if there are doubts over the man between the sticks.

“The shoulder joint definitely came out and (went) back in so it just depends on the damage along the way. We’ll see what the specialist says tomorrow. When you look at the incident it was a freaky incident. I’ve seen the stills and it is just a freak moment in a game. It went back in pretty quick, so it depends on the disruption in the shoulder. We’ll find out more tomorrow.” – Sean Dyche

Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m) was the only member of the starting XI that faced Aberdeen to feature from the beginning in this match, as Dyche largely used either second-string options or players on their return from injury problems. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was one of the latter, his involvement against Montpelier the first since the opening match of pre-season. The former Plymouth Argyle striker managed 60 minutes before being replaced by Nakhi Wells (£4.5m). Sam Vokes (£5.5m) started alongside him after coming off the bench to equalise for Burnley at Pittodrie.

BURNLEY XI (4-4-2): Legzdins; Taylor, Dunne, Long, Bardsley; Brady (McNeil 42’), Hendrick (Goodridge 60’), O’Neill, Walters; Barnes (Wells 60’), Vokes (Agyei 70’).

Sessegnon as a 5.5 defender or even 6.0 defender seems like it may have been a better classification

Easy enough to say that now, after a little bit of pre-season.

He was a midfielder for the whole second half of last season though, so you can't really blame them if it turns out wrong.

True, but they would have been well within their rights to classify him as a defender after he played there last year, would have been another option rather than another non-option

Yep... I would really think twice about spending 6.5 on him though as a defender. As a mid it seems crazy.

Totally. 6.5 mid somehow seems ok. But as a defender, no way at that price. Even though he'd almost definitely score more points if listed as a 6.5 defender than a 6.5 mid. Jedi mind tricks right there.

I don't understand why FPL Towers cannot reclassify players if obvious positional mistake made before the window closes. Same goes for players who are transferred between top and bottom teams etc.

Probably for technical reasons - what happens with teams who have already picked these players?

          Exactly.

Plus, this is not even an 'obvious' positional mistake. He may end up playing most of the season in midfield again.

If Emery decides to go with one up top at times, he will likely be benched. But think both himself and Auba will start together from the start with Laca central and Auba cutting in from the left!

He’s not nailed, not if preseason is anything to go by. Aubameyang has played in 2 positions in preseason, central striker and left wing. When he’s played central striker Lacazette is benched.

    Any suggestions for this:

    Patricio, Fabianski
    Robertson, Bailly, Coleman (Tomkins, Peltier)

    Aguero, Zaha, Arnie

    Thanks guys 🙂

I'm going with him from the start. Aguero also has a tough opening game and who knows about gw2 at this stage. Aubameyang has great fixtures from gw3 so for me it's a wasted transfer not to have him from the start

Like it! I’ve got a similar team, but going 442. So main difference is I’ve got PVA instead of Mili. Personally I think Mili is over priced and PVA might outscore him at a cheaper price. He’s heavily reliant on pens.

Trying out a 4-4-2 to fit in Kun and Auba:

    Fabianski
    Robertson / Mendy / Keane / Cedric
    Salah / Eriksen / Richarlison / Gudmundsson
    Aguero / Aubameyang

    Boruc / Stephens / Kamara / Wan-Bissaka

True, and the Burnely fixtures look nice.

Drawback is no backup for Fabianski, and having to play a SOU or CRY defender, but I guess that's the price you have to pay to make room for both Kun and Auba up front.

Looks good. I'd personally downgrade Keane to a 4.5 so you can bump up Kamara to Sorloth. At least you know Sorloth will play the first couple of weeks and might grab you some points unlike Kamara.

Or I'd do Gudmundsson to Cairney, Kamara to Sorloth and Keane to Coleman and then I'd say that Bob's your uncle.

Third time coming back to this team, and still pretty happy. 10 days to go, but this is looking solid to me. Unsure about my fourth mid, though.

    Ederson (Foster)
    Roberston / Bailly / Cedric (Wan-Biss, Suttner)
Salah / Sane / Richarlison / Neves (Stephens)
    Aguero / Firmino / Arnie

Do you think Azpi will get 2 goals & 6 assists to match his score from last year? That was an extra 30 attacking point,a plus the 5 or 6 baps that came with them.... he would have been on about 140-ish without them. I could see him performing more like a 6.0 this year than a 6.5

Fair, but I like idea of sttarting with him with CHEs fix and if hes not getting forward much, easy to downgrade! Going Salahless allows this comfortably.

In my local variant these players cost the same. Who would you bank on long term? Cheers

    A: Neves
    B: Mooy
    C: Ralls
    D: Townsend
    E: Wilshere
    F: Redmond

I need a few for my expensive front, and I'm personally thinking Neves, Townsend, Mooy as my enablers because of the pens. Trying to find the new Mili.

    Doing something a bit different with work friends this year, picking a team to keep all season. Obviously need players who will be nailed for club and not injury prone. Initial thoughts;

    Firmino, Auba

    Any other thoughts?

My first RMT on this site, would appreciate any feedback.

    Edison
    Robertson | Alonso | Mendy | Azpilicueta | Bellerin
    Salah | D.Silver | Richarlison
    Aubameyang | Arnautovic

    Kante | Stephens | Quaner

I doubled up last year on Alonso and Azp and it worked wonders for me so having another punt but will monitor if Alonso is as effective this year.
Bellerin might be swapped out for another 5.5 for first two game weeks. Potentially Coleman but Evertons pre-season is a worry.
Auba can be downgraded to Lacazette and upgraded D.Silver to KDB when he's back in action.

    Thanks

Applaud your bravery to go 5 at the back. Not many dares to. Would try to fit in a Spurs defender inside. You can start with Bailly, PVA or Coleman in Bellerin’s place for first couple of weeks.

I think 5 premium defenders won't work out over the full season. If you look at previous years, most of the biggest scorers are in midfield. Would recommend 3-5-2 or 3-4-3. Good luck anyway!

Thanks for the comments, last year using 5 premium defenders including Alonso & Azp I finished overall 90k and won my mini league, yeah before that I finished 300k so I saw a personal improvement. This year would like to get into top 50k

It lists Liverpool's penalty takers as Fabinho, Salah, Milner, Firmino, Henderson.

They've had 2 in pre-season and Mane has taken them both, I believe.

yes, saw him took the last one, but not sure if fabinho was on the pitch. But there must be some comments of some sort, can't just put him first on the list as a punt :p

I think he took them regularly for Monaco.

But I do think this is just a punt by FFS. Don't think there's been anything said by Klopp, or anything to suggest that he's Liverpool's main penalty taker.
