The ScoutCast Episode 265 – Difference

This week the ScoutCast crew are determined to bust the myth that they share identical strategies.

Long-term maverick Luke returns to reveal his freshly Wildcarded team which bravely went into Gameweek 2 without Manchester City’s hat-trick hero Sergio Aguero and last season’s points-scoring sensation Mohamed Salah.

In stark contrast, Az is continuing his march up the rankings thanks to his faith in this premium pair, and his resolve in resisting broadsheet tittle-tattle hinting that the Argentinian would be dropped.

David is also beating a different drum and keen to explain the reasons behind his chequered FPL history and how his fortunes already look better this time around.

That leaves me as the only dullard representative, armed with a bunch of ownership statistics, a goals imminent table and a dubious ‘camping’ excuse to explain my recent poor captaincy decision.

Our differing views across a range of key issues facing Fantasy Premier League manages ahead of Gameweek 3 are aired.

Our assessment of Chelsea and Arsenal assets ahead of their favourable fixtures is top of our list. And we also ponder whether Spurs’ players can compete as assets this season and indulge in some bargain hunting up front.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Looks more normal this year e.g making the odd mistake/heavy touch.

Last year literally everything he touched went in the goal - it was freaky.

Can see him still being good, but for 13m expect many to drop him and free up cash for Kane by Xmas, if not earlier.

        This is Mane’s season

That’s a good way to put it, normal. I reckon he drops 40-50 points from last year, still a great score.

Was he that sharp in the first 2 matches last season - I can't remember? A little early season rustiness is no cause for alarm. With Bobby playing deeper this season Salah and Mane together will get even more chances.

He didn't look spectacular, though. I had him in right from the start but while he performed well he didn't look brilliant. Make of that what you will.

Playing devils advocate, if Salah doesn't deliver this week there could be a bandwagon to reinvest that money in Hazard/Kane during Liverpool's tougher fixtures.

Is having all of Alonso Mendy Salah Mane Auba and Kun worth it for the usual 11th player to be Wan-B or maybe as bad as Stephens or Kamara this week?
Any better suggestion than Ryan especially in the short term?
    Thanks

    Alonso Mendy TAA

I think your fine for the next week or two, but a lot of these players have very good back-ups for their positions. As soon as mid week games start up then there will be some rotation and it would be an idea to have more quality on the bench.

Yeah a WC should have a bit more long term thinking. Even Pool fixtures turn pretty soon

If I sacrifice Mane to Mkhi I can upgrade Stephens to Mkhi
And Ryan to Ederson and probably Bennett too.
That the way to go instead?

This a wildcard team? I’d go Auba to Zaha, Stephens to Mkhi and upgrade the bench with the change. Prefer Hennessey to Ryan in the short term.

Left out for tactical reasons, not rest. With Hudd sitting deep his speed taking on wingers wasn't required, so Bilva's creativity was prioritized. Expect Pep to repeat the choices in further games where busses are parked. Against Wolves' wingbacks however, Walker will have a field day.

Don't mind the hit too much since I kicked-off the season pretty well.

I'm surprised none of the scoutcast have jumped on the Alonso train. Interested to see if he is in Mark's WC team. Expect he will be as he likes to be contrary to the others.

To be fair it's not that surprising. Getting Alonso in is point chasing a bit. Whilst he does go on runs of form, he also goes on barren runs every now and then. And Chelsea don't look like keeping as many clean sheets as last year, which tend to be useful for defenders.

Holebas is point-chasing; Alonso with his record year after year is hardly point-chasing. As rickety as Chelsea might be at the back right now, the point from previous years still stands - he'll get as many if not more assists and goals as most 6.5 midfielders and strikers.

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 7 Years

He got 9 attacking returns last season. He's already got 3 so far. So he'll get roughly 6 from the remaining 36 weeks. Think I can see many 6.5 mids and strikers who'll get more than 6

He could get more then 9 this year based on this start you know. 9 is not the ceiling! Lol

There's no ceiling, but that's usually what a full back gets at best. Expecting more is hoping for a freak season.

And fyi, he had the same start last season. 2 goals from the first 2 weeks, 12 points. 1 goal and 2 assists this time, 12 points.

Again, each season doesn't repeat in replica! Do you still get Baines every year? In my mind it is more logical to take this as an indicator of form and surmise that under a new manager and new system Alonso might be thriving. Worth a go, especially seeing as many won't be willing to pay for him with Mendy and Robertson in their teams. I think that's the real argument against Alonso; team structure.

"In my mind it is more logical to take this as an indicator of form and surmise that under a new manager and new system Alonso might be thriving."

              - This looks like speculation at best because he had the exact same start last season. It's not as if we can see an "improvement" of some kind.

Attacking returns from full backs are a bonus, but they always get more clean sheets than attacking returns. It's easier to try to catch as many clean sheets as you can from the rough 15 they get from 38 weeks than the rough 8-9 attacking returns. When Chelsea look shaky at the back, that rules out the first requirement for me for 6.5m before I can even hope for his attacking returns.

Of course, to each his own.

I just don't think you can keep extrapolating last season to this one. Unhappy Conte for the season, now new manager, new system, quite feasibly different outcome. Also, something we've not mentioned yet, now great fixtures! Let's see how Alonso goes in the next few games and let that settle the debate. Indeed each to his own, that's why different players get different ranks.

Chelsea “looking” “shaky at the back” are such ridiculous arguments for not getting Alonso. Borderline madness.

CokeySmurf I think this is the point where you say Alonso is a great FPL pick with Bournemouth home, Cardiff home, West Ham away up next.

Chelsea's defending has not been good. This is a fact that you'll know if you watched the games instead of just staring at Alonso's returns. Even an Alonso owner admitted this and said he wasn't expecting a clean sheet vs Bournemouth. I guess the realistic ones are in minority.

I never said he wasn't a good pick. I'm just realistically aware of what to expect from him whereas you're just looking at past points, upcoming fixtures, chasing them and assuming he's essential.

That’s ok, as long as you are acknowledging he is a great FPL pick, which is the important piece. No defence is the league will keep more than 18-19 clean sheets so I wouldn’t let that blind you to missing out on Alonso.

                      Twisting my words now?

I was talking about his total attacking returns over a season, not any "pattern" in which they'll arrive. And remember I said "roughly". Obviously I can't speculate that it'll be exactly 9. This is no different to saying Kane will score 20+ goals this season. Pattern would be me saying "Kane will score at the same times he did last season".

And I brought up the fact that he got off to a fast start last season as well because Fossit above said he may get more than 9 this year BECAUSE he got off to a fast start. So I merely reminded him that he got off to the same start last season, so it doesn't NECESSARILY mean that he'll get more than 9 this season. I wasn't saying he will or will not follow the same pattern.

Lol. So are you saying get him in or don't get him in? I've lost track of what your angle is. I think he's a great pick and this season is looking better than last, with Sarri's set up. Got him in and scored 11 points, seems like a positive indicator. Believe his stats are all up on last year too, so don't buy the year on year argument whether you're taking about in pattern or as a total year. Different manager, different system.

We'll see witty pun, we'll see. It is surprising to me. I think he's one of those players, like Kane, who experienced managers get on at early signs of form or miss out on some hauls. His stats and history show this season's form is not unsustainable nor unusual. Chelsea will keep clean sheets if they're keeping a lot of possession and winning games against lesser teams.

Nah, just giving an example of his form fuzzing out before people jump on him. Lets put it this way, if his goals so far this year had just been SOT, tough shots which were saved well by the keepers, would there be as big a bandwagon for him right now? There is an element of pointchasing here, even though I won't refute that he can be a good option at times.

Oh I see what you mean, you're arguing that because he has already scored well anyone moving for him is points chasing. The same as anyone buying Mane then, or Wilson, Fraser, Mendy or Aguero... They're all points chasing moves if people didn't already own them?

obviously, the effect isn’t known until after the matches and points are posted. The players you bring in could causevyour tank to go up or down depending on how they perform. Thus the -4 becomes a variable that a player could pay off due to his performance or could detract based on poor performance.

4 points down from 98k rank would put you at ~134k, but you can't look at it that way, without considering the immediate return from the player you bring in as well.

Besides, overall rank does not matter at this stage - we've only played roughly 5 % of the season.

A good bench is a bench that starts every week (if you're not the rotating kind). And WB - Bennet - 4.5mid gives you that. How do you know Kante/Cook WILL score when you need them to?

very true mate, hmmm might be best to focus on the XI with cheapies. The 4.5mid bracket is horrible though!

After this week the only heavy hitters I plan to have are Auba, Kun and Hazard. Yikes!

Ah, I see. Going without Mané and/or Salah is a bit to maverick for my taste, but I'm worried about Auba and Haz getting huge hauls in their upcoming fixtures (don't have any of them).

          Best of luck to you!
