Watchlist Update – Liverpool lead goalkeeper and defender sections

We have updated the Watchlist section of our site ahead of Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 10.

This article catalogues the changes we have made to the goalkeeper and defender sections.

It’s good news for owners of Liverpool defensive assets as the Reds look imperious at the back ahead of favourable fixtures.

Goalkeepers

Alisson (£5.6m) keeps his place at the summit of the Goalkeeper section. Liverpool’s fixtures over the next six weeks continue to prove very appealing. Cardiff, Fulham and Everton all have to come to Anfield between now and Gameweek 15. Meanwhile trips to Arsenal, Watford and Burnley feel very much inside Liverpool’s comfort zone as far as clean sheet potential is concerned. A sixth shut-out in nine matches last time out means that Alisson’s form is, not surprisingly ranked as an A.

Chelsea shot-stopper Kepa Arizzabalaga (£5.5m) rises two places to take the runner-up spot this week. With Manchester United out of the way, the appeal of Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures is the main reason he has managed to creep above Ederson (£5.7m) and Rui Patrício (£4.6m). Burnley, Crystal Palace and Everton are the Blues’ next three opponents while both Wolves and Man City face Spurs in that time as well as Arsenal and Man United respectively.

Mat Ryan (£4.5m) climbs the ranking to fifth place as both form and fixture coincide with the Brighton goalkeeper. He has two double-figure hauls in a row now while the Seagulls sit top of the Season Ticker for defence over the next six Gameweeks. It’s Wolves at home up next, followed by Everton (away), Cardiff (away), Leicester (home), Huddersfield (away) and Crystal Palace (home).

Ben Foster‘s (£4.5m) form remains at C with the Gameweek 8 win over Wolves just his second clean sheet of the season, but things look positive for Watford over the coming weeks. Their next three, in particular, look very encouraging with Huddersfield coming to Vicarage Road before trips to Newcastle and Southampton.

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) stays on the Watchlist on account of Leicester’s continued appealing run of games. Home games against West Ham, Burnley and Watford have clean sheet potential, as well as the Gameweek 11 trip to Cardiff. However, we’ve left the C for form on Schmeichel considering that he still has just two clean sheets this season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) rises a little on account of West Ham’s continuing fixture swing. With that home meeting with Spurs out of the way, their goalkeeper now has a Favourable Fixtures factor attached to him. In fact, only Brighton and Leicester rank higher than the Hammers for defence on the Season Ticker over the next six Gameweeks. That’s because they play Burnley (home), Huddersfield (away) and Cardiff (home) between now and Gameweek 15. Their meetings with the Clarets and Terriers in Gameweeks 11 and 12 may be of particular interest to Patricio owners, as that is when he plays Spurs and Arsenal.

Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) drops down on account of Newcastle’s struggles converting on clean sheet promise. A home fixture against a Brighton side typically poor on the road in Gameweek 9 was the perfect opportunity for them to capitalise on this appealing run of theirs but they failed to deliver. The Magpies still have teams such as Southampton (away), Watford (home) and Burnley (away) to face so their defensive options must remain on the Watchlist but a form of C reflects our trust in them.

At the bottom of the list is Everton’s Jordan Pickford (£4.9m) who creeps into tenth place to replace Bernd Leno (£4.8m). The Toffees win over Crystal Palace in Gameweek 9 was just their second clean sheet of the season but it represented back-to-back shutouts at Goodison Park. That means that owning an Everton defensive asset could be of use between now and Gameweek 15 as their home fixtures rotate very nicely with some awful away ones. Alternating with trips to Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool are home match-ups with Brighton, Cardiff and Newcastle.

Defenders

Andrew Robertson (£6.4m) stays top of the pile for defenders for much the same reason that Alisson is the best goalkeeper option. The fixtures, as we have mentioned, are great and Liverpool’s defence is in excellent form. Robertson looks the most likely to start in the back-four and has the greatest attacking threat too.

Marcos Alonso (£7.0m) has definitely regressed in terms of attacking options recently but with Chelsea having three very favourable fixtures coming up it feels harsh to push him down the pile. Just as Kepa has risen in the goalkeeper rankings, Alonso holds second place for now. Antonio Rüdiger (£5.9m) is knocking on the door to replace him though.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.3m) goes back up to third after his return to the Man City side. His 10 point haul against Burnley is further proof that when this man starts matches he delivers FPL points. In the six matches that he has played so far this season, he has three clean sheets and six assists.

Matt Doherty (£4.8m) keeps his form factor of A for now as we think that Wolves’ defeat to Watford may have been a flash in the pan. There are still three nice matches coming up for the newly-promoted side, against Brighton, Huddersfield and Cardiff, but we can’t give Doherty the Favourable Fixtures factor as he will also line-up against Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea between now and Gameweek 15. Having risen from £4.4m to £4.8m in a matter of weeks, we have also removed the budget factor from Doherty.

Shane Duffy (£4.5m) is the big riser in defence. As was the case with Ryan, the Brighton centre-back has time his form with a fixture swing which makes him one of the most appealing defenders in his price bracket long-term.

Kieran Trippier (£6.3m) drops down as Spurs face a sticky patch of matches. It’s Man City up next as well as Chelsea and Arsenal between now and Gameweek 15. Only Arsenal and Crystal Palace rank lower than them for defence on the Season Ticker over the next six Gameweeks. Trippier does still hold some attacking potential given his positioning and set-piece responsibilities, but his place is under more threat now that Serge Aurier (£5.8m) has returned to full fitness.

Jose Holebas (£4.8m) comes back from suspension this week and goes back into a defence that kept a clean sheet at in-form Wolves in Gameweek 9. As we’ve mentioned with Foster, the fixtures bode well for this set-piece taker. Another full-back with similar responsibilities is Everton’s Lucas Digne (£4.8m). He’s up next and, just like was the case with Pickford, he can rotate very well over the next six Gameweeks.

Ben Chilwell (£5.0m) has nicer fixtures than Digne looking at things from a more long-term perspective but he drops given that we’re not sure if Leicester can deliver on the appealing schedule. They have just two clean sheets this season. Also in a similar position is DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m). He drops down the Watchlist because he’s another option with a nice run of matches but little to warrant faith in him just yet.

one question at a time 🙂

There is nothing official which is why he's not flagged, there were some tweets which suggested he had a back spasm over night after the United game.
But as I say, nothing official from the club. as far as I know.

Bench is terrible. Not planning for any injuries or benching?
Arsenal have tough fixtures over next 6 games, West Ham have amazing fixtures. I'd bring in Arnie for the run and upgrade bench.

I didn't realise that missing a ‘Big chance’ equated to -3 in the BPS. That's so stupid. Not only are not all "big chances" created equal, but if you tallied all big chances compared with actual conversion, I doubt they're scored over 1/3 of the time. Possibly even less frequent than that.

    1. Play Pal
      • 7 Years

The definition of a big chance is when the player is expected to score.

That definition must really work in Lukakus favour then.

But the pay off is lots of bps. It's -1 for a shot which hits the post that grinds my gears.

Thanks guys - do you think going without Aguero is an absolute no? There are lots of forward options available, for instance I'm currently looking at Laca+Arnie+Mitro, and with Hazard and Salah pretty much nailed in my team as captaincy options, Aguero feels expensive!

Balbuena seems like a good WH defender to own in the coming fixtures. And is usually high up in the BAPS during matches(if they keep cs.). Someone here also mentioned that he is dangerous on off-set pieces as well. Definitely one to watch.

The thinking is that he is/will be a risk longer term because of his age and the quality of the backup RB. Diop is more nailed at same price and Balbuena has better stats at just 0.1 more.

I like Balbeuna as a 1st / 2nd sub at 4.4. good fixtures and pretty decent goal threat. WHM are also pretty sound when it comes to defensive stats; same XGc as Chelsea over the last 6.

Looking to make some moves over next 2 weeks to bring in Mendy & Arnautovic with minimal disruption to rest of my squad. Which method do you prefer?

Option 1 (no hit, lose Richarlison):
    GW10 - Richarlison & Chilwell > Kenedy & Mendy (free)
    GW11 - Wilson > Arnie (free)

    Gives me...
    Patricio (Foster)
    ALONSO - MENDY - Robbo (Doherty - Wan-Bissaka)
Salah - Hazard - Maddison - KENEDY (Billing)
    Aguero - Mitrovic - ARNAUTOVIC

    Option 2 (hit, keep Richarlison):
    GW10 - Alonso & Chilwell > Luiz & Mendy (free)
    GW11 - Wilson & Foster > Arnie & 4.0 (-4)

    Gives me...
    Patricio (4.0)
    LUIZ - MENDY - Robbo (Doherty - Wan-Bissaka)
Salah - Hazard - Maddison - RICHARLISON (Billing)
    Aguero - Mitrovic - ARNAUTOVIC

    TL;DR - Alonso & Kenedy or Luiz & Richarlison (-4)

Probably first one in long run. Kenedy, Doherty and WB rotate well all the way to GW 33. Maybe downgrade Alonso to Luiz in a few weeks time.

Interested in thoughts on going with 2 premium attackers / heavy hitters compared to 3?

3 is a template structure (although I generally don't like the word 'template' in fpl) e.g. Hazard + Aguero + Salah / Sterling / Kane / Auba / Lukaku. I hardly see any teams or RMTs that don't have 3 of these players combined with one budget attack / bench fodder and at least one (often 2) budget defenders.

Why is this? Is it because 3 heavy hitters provides the best captaincy coverage? Is it simply a case of getting as much money into the starting XI as possible and carry a weak bench? Is it fear of not owning one of the premiums with high ownership? Is it all of these factors or something else?

I'd like to know because I am currently running with only 2 (Hazard and now Salah, having brought him in for a hit this week). Dropped Aguero to fund Salah. No Kane. My 3rd most expensive player is Ramsey (7.4) and he will be making way soon - either to a similarly priced player or to 4.5m in order to upgrade elsewhere e.g. Maddison > KDB / Mane / Alli when Spurs fixtures turn.

What I do have in lieu of a 3rd premium is great depth and balance. I can rotate according to fixtures. I can ignore yellow flags or doubts (if Hazard misses this week, Mendy or Richarlison would come off my bench). It's genuinely enjoyable to play with a proper 15 and analyse the fixtures closely rather 'set and forget'.

However, my biggest rival says it's all going to come crashing down, it's not sustainable etc. So far it's worked absolutely superbly, so I am not planning to change it. Of course it means situations come along like GW11 and I don't have a City attacker vs Southhampton. But I may not have captained one anyway. Thoughts?

But why? Where else in your team are you sacrificing? Are you having trouble with your 10th outfield player always being rubbish? Would 2 injuries / unexpected benchings cripple your team?

I have no idea why, i love big hitters 🙂
Saw someone yesterday make a much nicer team than mine:

          McCarthy(>Fabs next week) 4.0
          Mendy Robbo Holebas Doherty AWB
          Salah Hazard KDB Brooks 4.5
Kun Jiminez Mitro (>Arnie next week)

Brooks and 4.5 looks like the weakness / sacrifice to me. I'd argue that team is 1 injury and 1 unexpected rotation away from having to play fodder or a number of players with bad fixtures. But yes it's got heavy hitters covered for sure. I find this an interesting dilemma. I've gone the complete opposite and I'd like to think it will pay dividends over this busy period.

              • 6 Years

It's a core 4-3-3 but I've had fodder since day 1 and, AWB & Brooks are good options. AWB has a big fixture swing in 14 remember!

Also i have wildcard so, don't need to worry much about those sorts of dilemma...

probably they feel more secured having as many players from top teams as possible, they are predictable and reliable assets.

Agree with your points though, an overall balanced team provides more flexibility and there is less pressure to make transfers or take hits due to short term scenarios like suspensions and injuries.

That's been my thinking. It does make the game more challenging because I don't have an obvious set and forget starting XI, but to me that's a good thing. More than one way to play the game.

If that is working for you and you are enjoying it then you are playing the game in the right way.
I think the issue is that attacking returns are not as predictable as defensive ones - look at Kane's recent output or Aguero's relative lack of points even when City are handing out a pasting.
While not a sure thing every week, the big hitters are almost certainly guaranteed to come up with a big score over the course of a season or a reasonably sized block of fixtures and are therefore worth what you pay for them and make the game easier to "win" (whatever your target might be).

That's a fair point. Countering that approach, is a 10.5m+ player worth having if not a regular captain? I'd personally rather have 2 genuinely playable assets than, for example, Aguero playing 60 mins + bench fodder.

Because there is a trade-off elsewhere in your team. When Brooks comes in for a 1-point cameo now that he's not nailed, that's the trade-off.

lol what are you on about, how many cameos has Brooks made? 🙄 AWB & Brooks are my bench, most players here have AWB + fodder so Brooks versus Fraser is the main fundamental difference and, if you paid attention to football you'd know which was a better option 🙂

I see you're trying to explore the mindset of an alternative strategy but you really didn't answer my question. Was specifically "Why is owning a premium player and not captaining, a bad option"

Not sure having multiple 6-7 million options on the team/bench is better than having a premium player supported by a great value player. Mostly because:

      1) You know premium players have consistency and are captaincy options
      2) 5-7m bracket is very tricky - you'll be doing transfers all the time because you wont know who that 5-7m player is. Mkhi, Pogba, King, Rich, Zaha are good examples of this. They are decent some weeks but can equally be poor many weeks.

Here is a 4 big hitter example:

        Ryan/Button
        Robbo / Mendy / Luiz / Doherty / Balbuena
Salah / Haz / KBD (or Mane) / Kenedy / Stephens
        Kun / Arnie / Jimenez

4 at the back - Doherty rotates with Balbuena
        Upfront Kenedy rotates with Jimenez
