Scout Squad

The Scout Squad – FPL Gameweek 11

The Scout Squad panel are back to offer their long-list of candidates to be considered for our regular Scout Picks selection on Friday afternoon.

The 72 nominations will be whittled down to a squad of 15 (with the starting XI not exceeding £83m and no club represented by more than three players) ahead of the Gameweek 11 deadline at 11:30 GMT on Saturday.

Our three in-house regulars – Az, Joe and Paul – are joined again this week by Peter Kouwenberg, who has three top 500 finishes to his name.

Gameweek 10 saw only two players receive four nominations but there is more unanimity this week, with nine players being backed across the board.

Intriguingly, each member of our panel has gone for a different Manchester City midfielder.

Pep Guardiola’s side and Watford are the only two clubs to have a player nominated in each of the four positions.

With the likes of Marcos Alonso, Benjamin Mendy, Eden Hazard, Mohamed Salah and Sergio Aguero very strong candidates to be included in our final Scout Picks, budget buys such as Lukasz Fabianski, Fabian Balbuena, Kiko Femenia and Isaac Success might well be called upon to ensure we finish under budget.

Along with a list of usual Scout Squad contenders, I’ve gone for Kevin De Bruyne as my preferred Manchester City midfielder.

After being eased back into action with a pair of substitute appearances, the Belgian could be set to start at home to Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

De Bruyne has an incredible record in meetings with the Saints, too.

He has been involved in eight of the nine league goals Man City have scored against them while he has been on the pitch.

That has led to two goals and six assists over five outings.

At the other end of the price bracket, Watford’s trip to Newcastle could deliver some intriguing differentials this week.

Kiko Femenia and Isaac Success offer in-form picks in defence and attack.

At £4.2m, Femenia has 18 points in the last two Gameweeks, thanks to two clean sheets and an assist.

Another shutout looks on the cards, too, as the Magpies have failed to score in four of their previous five league outings.

Success has the numbers to make a mockery of his £4.5m price tag at St James’ Park.

On the scoresheet in last weekend’s win over Huddersfield, the Nigerian has impressed since securing a starting role in Gameweek 9.

His totals of five shots and four chances created both rank among the top five forwards in the last two rounds of fixtures.

This week looks perfect for bargain hunters, with plenty of cheap options having favourable matches.

West Ham assets look particular appetising for frugal managers ahead of Burnley’s visit. I’m hoping at least one of Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) or defender Fabian Balbeuna (£4.4m) makes the cut.

Both have started every league match and offer additional points aside from just clean sheets, with the Polish stopper earning save points in all but one of his games and the Paraguayan international scoring last time out.

Up front for the Hammers, Marko Arnautovic also offers value at £7.0m, despite missing Gameweek 10 through illness. With 12 shots – eight from close range – over his last three starts, he looks primed for points against the Clarets. No side has conceded more shots away from home than Sean Dyche’s troops.

I’ve also included Watford’s £4.5m striker Isaac Success Ajayi as a possible enabler should we need to free up funds. He also scored in Gameweek 10 and should earn a start away to Newcastle if Troy Deeney fails to recover from injury.

Everton’s well-priced rearguard should also be represented, with stopper Jordan Pickford and full-back Lucas Digne my favoured options. Visitors Brighton have the worst away record in terms of shots and only Liverpool and Manchester City have conceded fewer goal attempts at home than the Toffees.

Such savings will be needed to squeeze in a wealth of premium picks this week, with Sergio Aguero and Benjamin Mendy looking shoo-ins for Southampton’s visit.

Eden Hazard, if fit, at home to Crystal Palace looks impossible to ignore, as does a rampant Mohamed Salah, whose Liverpool side travel to Arsenal. Over the last four Gameweeks, only Burnley have shipped more big chances than the Gunners.

My frustrating FPL week pales in comparison to what went on at the weekend, with such a tragic loss of life for all those involved in the Leicester helicopter crash. RIP Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, Eric Swaffer, Izabela Roza Lechowicz, Nursara Suknamai, and Kaveporn Punpare.

On to more trivial things. Gameweek 10 was a tricky one to navigate, but Gameweek 11 looks more straightforward with Chelsea and Manchester City both having excellent fixtures, and West Ham United and Everton also having strong-looking home ties. It’s made my decisions a lot easier as I’ve picked a core group of players from these sides.

I lost Jordan Pickford from my own side in Gameweek 7 and he has gone on to score 34 points in four games: to say I am bitter is an understatement. Everton look to be slowly improving, despite their result against Manchester United, and I can see a win here – although Brighton off the back of three consecutive wins and clean sheets may make it a bit tricky. I fancy Gylfi Sigurdsson to carry on his good run, however, as he continues to make a case for inclusion over Richarlison. I did that at the start of the season and that too has conspired against me, as things look to have shifted back.

I’ve gone expensive in defence as the “RAM” continues to flatten all in its path. Picking between Benjamin Mendy and Marcos Alonso for top spot was tough this week – Mendy was poor on Monday night and Alonso finally delivered some attacking returns against Burnley – but in the end, I’ve chosen Mendy and I’d be amazed if he didn’t make the final picks. He has not blanked once all season when he’s played, which is incredible.

In midfield, there is nothing too exciting. Eden Hazard looks set to be unleashed against Crystal Palace, Mohamed Salah goes up against an Arsenal side who have conceded more chances than Cardiff City, and Raheem Sterling, if he plays, looks a fantastic shout against Southampton.

Up front, Sergio Aguero has the fixture and even with limited minutes should wreak some havoc. Marko Arnautovic should shake his illness bug and is a viable captaincy option this week if you are worried about Hazard’s back and Aguero’s game time.

I’m hoping Jamie Vardy and the whole Leicester City team overcome the emotion of their trip to Cardiff and get a big win here. I’m also amazed there is talk of selling Bournemouth assets, as they have been incredible this season. I don’t think there is a chance that Manchester United keep them out – hence the Callum Wilson pick.

With the exceptions of the Etihad and Stamford Bridge juggernauts, there are some tricky ties to call this week. Having listed some familiar faces from the Sky Blues and the Blues above, my remaining selections require somewhat more justification.

Historically, clashes between Liverpool and Arsenal are high-scoring affairs, but a similar historical pattern was challenged by the recent goalless draw between the Reds and Manchester City. In any event, I can’t resist Mohamed Salah, despite Arsenal’s excellent recent home record.

Analysing recent home and away defensive and offensive team form throws up interesting options. Wolves have been fairly resilient having conceded just three goals in their last four home fixtures, a figure matched by their visitors, Spurs, on their recent travels.

No other defender can match Kieran Trippier’s nine chances created in his last four matches, whilst Matt Doherty has fired off the same number of attempts himself. Both players, then, could contribute if there is any breach of their opponent’s robust defence on Saturday night.

The team statistics also suggest that the Magpies may struggle to trouble the Hornets, whilst the Hammers have a decent chance of shutting out the Clarets, as reflected by my goalkeeping choices from those games. No doubt Fabian Balbuena will also be a popular choice to repeat last week’s goalscoring feats, although he just misses out on my shortlist.

Instead, I’ve gone with Lucas Digne, who has created six opportunities and fired off five efforts of his own in the last four matches and whose Everton side welcomes a Brighton team which boasts only three goals on the road all season. Sadly for the Seagulls, I foresee goals at the other end too and Gylfi Sigurdsson – on penalties and with 14 chances created in his last four matches, albeit only one big chance – seems poised to profit.

My final midfield slot was between the creativity of James Maddison and the goal threat of Roberto Pereyra but I’ve plumped for the Argentinian, allowing me to “cover” the Foxes’ attack with Jamie Vardy. Cardiff City have conceded an average of three goals a game in their last four home matches and I anticipate that the England man will be restored to the starting line-up for an emotive fixture following the tragic events of last Saturday.

The Community Champion

Last week’s champion, fclackless, thrashed our Scout Picks 77-44 with his line-up of Foster (9); Holebas (0), Lovren (2), Bertrand (6); Salah (15), Sterling (6), Martial (9), Mane (15); King (0), Lacazette (2), Wilson (13).

fclackless‘s winning margin of 33 points is, unsurprisingly, now the target to beat.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2018/19 will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

Jimenez is an annoying one - not really good enough but no one around the same price i want to buy.
I think i've missed Wilson's points now given their grim fixtures.

Can anyone explain me this Success hype over here? I know he scored a goal, first in 2 years also. Why he is better FPL option than Kamara, who is 0,2m cheaper. You generally will never start him, I believe. But if it comes to him to be a sub, do You believe, he will add more points than Kamara?
Or just the sexy name makes the difference?

Sounds stupid ? Having a cheap 3rd sub such as Kamara allows you to have more cash for 2 premium forwards or 3 premium mids along with Mendy Robbo ect. It's a tried and tested method that's worked for years.

Success has broken into the first team for Watford in Deeney's absence. He's a legitimate starter and with two good fixtures it's a decent short term punt which then changes into fodder.

      1. gergin
        • 8 Years

I do not see good fixture either. Away games with common defensive teams and very hard home games in next 5. Fulham have better fixtures and Kamara will have some minutes to share.

Fraser, Vardy, Mitro out for Mane, Arnie, Ings. Ings has Watford (h) and Fulham (a) in 12 & 13. The main purpose of the -8 is to double up on Liverpool attack for Ful (h) Wat(a) Eve (h) Bur (a) Bou (a) and it also gets me Arnie for the sea of green.

    A. Hamer to Fab to rotate with Patricio
    or
    B. Get Doherty (Bennett ---> Doherty)

Following the “Mid-Priced mids” HT on Monday, I noticed a few people with plans to switch formation. So far, a 3-4-3 has been the template formation, especially recently. However, is it time to move away, and if so, which formation do you go to?

Simply put, I don’t know, so I tried listing out what our current situation looks like and what things we need to consider.

Up front, I can’t remember seeing something like this. In my opinion, we don’t have a single premium forward that is really making themselves essential, despite a wealth of options. In fact, as Adam Hopcroft points out on twitter (https://twitter.com/ahopcroft13/status/1057269280818057217?s=19), if you look at the top players rated by form, only 2 forwards make it onto the first page of 30 players – Aubameyang and Wilson. Auba is therefore the only premium forward in serious FPL form it seems, and he himself has had his minutes severely managed. Furthermore, in his last two he’s had 3 goals from 3 big chances, which forms all 3 of his goal attempts. Obviously, this could be viewed in several different ways, as WGTA points out (https://twitter.com/WGTA_FPL/status/1056886225536192512?s=19), but as Arsenal’s fixtures become disconcertingly red, it’s not an easy choice to jump on him! The other big name making anything above a slight case for himself is Aguero – 65 minute substitutions and a couple poor performances has caused a few owners to start getting twitchy, with many jumping off him now in hope of making up ground.
If we look at the more middle of the park priced forwards we have some more options. Arnautovic, Callum Wilson, Mitrovic or Murray perhaps – several names have been trying to make some noise. Could it be worth jumping ship on the premium forwards and going cheaper? However, the same issues apply – whilst there’s some promise in this bracket and the expectations are lower, the form still isn’t great here. So perhaps, you go even cheaper. Isacc Success has been getting some good minutes recently and earned himself a shout-out on the Scoutcast this week. Whether he will keep his place as Deeney returns from injury is somewhat left to debate, with myself being significantly less confident in him than many others. However, the question remains – is it time to drop to 2 forwards (Either premium + mid or 2x mid-priced) and an Isaac Success shaped fodder, and reinvest the cash further back in your team?

With the extra cash, you’d have to plan where to use it. In midfield, we have some nice premium options around – Salah, Hazard, Mane, KDB and the rest of the Pep Roulette brigade – there's some very tasty options there unlike with the premium forwards. Throw into that there’s some options in the pricer end of the mid-priced mids, such as Siggy, we have a serious punt potential building. Pad the rest out with some cheaper options, and suddenly you have a healthy 4-4-2 or 3-5-2.

Perhaps you’d beef up the backline instead (or as well!). The RAM template backline has been popular for most of this season, with Trippier and Doherty also offering widely held options. Meanwhile, the other City defenders are offering good returns, with 6 clean sheets on the bounce and some very impressing underlying statistics as Socanalysis pointed out on twitter (https://twitter.com/SocanalysisHQ/status/1057270269021175808). Investment here could offer serious, consistent returns.

Of course, jumping formations often requires careful thought and sometimes some pretty hefty surgery. Those with a wildcard in tact can certainly use it as a safety blanket if they do want to go and take a punt, but for me I can’t balance the potentials rewards against the risks we’d be exposing ourselves to. However – I can see it being a very viable strategy and one that will return well if you get lucky.

So is it time to jump ship? Which formation are you going with, and how are you moving the balance of funds in your teams, if at all?

      Some decent analysis, thx

Going completely against this flow my GH15 WC team will feature Kane, Laca & Arnie

Kane, interesting. Not one I'd given much thought to with his poor form, but after Arsenal GW 14 he could be an option - just too expensive for my taste!

I was thinking the same for GW16 WC - going for Kane Auba Arnie possibly, then if one of Kane & Auba don't hit form I can revert to Kun.

all of this can easily go out the window this weekend. Aguero score a brace or even someone like vardy scores a brace and we all rush to get the good strikers in again.. whatever you do don't change formation just because isaac success had a good week and aguero didn't

Was largely my thinking, but Success can just act as fodder if needed - as long as he's getting some minutes, there's merits to using him as an enabler to invest in places with more options

I think you can afford to change formation, but only if you get Sterling instead of Kun. If you go without either, then I don't see anyone else covering the City attacking points that well.

Once you jump ship on three cheap forwards, the likes of Sterling will need to match the likes of Kun.

Did Mitrovic and Yedlin to Success and Mendy and shifted to 4-4-2 with 2FTs.

I decided to bring Mendy over Mahrez. Also, I opted for benching Knockaert instead of selling this week and playing Billing against Fulham.

Not entirely confident on the moves, but I hope Billing gets some points there and high probability of CS + possible assists made me go for Mendy.

Looking at the same moves myself. Mendy is a far better choice than Mitrovic and is much cheaper. The change in formation makes a lot of sense (4-4-2).

I changed formation earlier this morning before price rises (Laca + Bennett to Arnie + Mendy + 0.5itb) after deliberating on it all week.
I'm now the proud owner of an E-TRAM (Ederson, Trippier, Robbo, Alonso, Mendy).

Personally I this point I think Kun (fairly nailed at the top of the most creative team) + Arnie (always a threat to me and great fixtures) are two set - then its a case of another mid or a 4.x cheapie. Success is an interesting one as Deeney is an old man and Gray looks out of favour - not much else for them up top. It's all about minutes - if he gets them I'm on board..

Been on 352 since GW4 wildcard and it took me from 80k to inside Top 1k.

With mid priced mids & forwards looking a bit dodgy right now I’m taking money out of Fraser and investing in Mendy.

I’ll be going for 442/352 now and rotate Doherty & Diangana.

      Nice post!
I did Ings to Success and Holebas to Mendy yesterday. Keeping Aguero and Wilson for now.
The thing about Aguero is that despite his limited minutes, he does seem to start every match. If I swapped out Aguero for another striker, then who do I get from the Man City attacking line up? Their midfield is a rotation minefield. Honestly, I would rather have Aguero for 70 min. every match than risking to miss out completely.
Now, if KDB gets in and gets his nailed spot from last season and Aguero starts to get rotated for Jesus, then I am all over moving to a more midfield/defence heavy formation.
Auba is a good option as a direct replacement for Aguero. But essentially, you get the same problem with him playing limited minutes.

Then there is Kane. I just had a look at their ECL group and they are in trouble. If they get knocked out, then I think Kane becomes a better option. You could even argue that Spurs getting knocked out in 4th place is even better, but maybe that's not realistic.

I've wildcarded for a general 5-3-2 or 5-2-3 depending on fixtures with occasional def benching

      Ederson 4m
      Mendy Alonso Luiz Robertson Lovren
      Haz Mane Fraser Pereyra Billing
      Aguero Mitro Wilson

room there to switch aguero in and out if needed to laca/aubam and also room to change mitro/wilson to arnie

I see so much value in defence this season with city pool and chels

Kun needs to stay due to 50 per cent ownership

Arnie looks good to new year.

        Murray should be nice too...

Not sure I'll move away from 343 but lets see

My formation is fluid and generally depends on the positions of the players that I prioritise in my team, the quality & value of players in the residual spaces and fixtures.

Right now my priorities are one 4.5 GK, RAM in defence and Aguero, Salah and Hazard. These are "obvious" picks, nothing clever. Salah's price leaves little funds to spare and the real "skill" is for me (and many other managers) to effectively fill the remaining 2 DEF, 3 MID and 2 FW slots with value players that will lift me up the rankings. I've been rotating between a 343 and a 352 formation lately, but due to fixtures I have inevitable blanks all over my budget picks and see few budget choices in MID, so I'm looking at downgrading Aguero to Arnie, getting a City MID and getting other budget MID/FWs with better fixtures, with a flexible 442-343-433 structure.

Thanks for mentioning my Tweet and think this is a great post.

I agree with the above and posted my plan on Twitter yesterday evening. I think the perfect time to sell Aguero is next week. My plan is as follows

GW 11: Enjoy Aguero's final appearance v Southampton. Save a transfer
GW12: Bring in Success for Aguero & Mane for Billing. Aguero plays Utd, Mane plays Fulham

Then I will spread the funds around my team

I was looking at the gw 15/16 fixture swing to change formation, get rid of a couple template players and go for arsenal and spurs but may have to do it earlier. Worth the risk I think if no hits involved. Even better for people with wildcards to fall back on.

I'm planning this switch on Wildcard next week.

Aguero does not look like matching the points total for Sterling, Hazard or Salah this season, and I suspect Mane and De Bruyne will finish somewhere close by the end of the season.

My plan on WC is Aguero to Jiminez (HUD & CAR fixtures then maybe swap to Wilson) in order to upgrade Schurrle to Mane who can eventually become De Bruyne or Sterling.

      Will have double City defence

I will be sticking with 3 4 3 for the foreseeable future. Not intending to switch to a 4 4 2 or 3 5 2. Perhaps on a wildcard in a few weeks but unlikely.

i've recently done this. went from 4-3-3 to 3-5-2 (or 4-4-2) , no prem forwards:

      Fab (Hamer)
      Taa Robbo Mendy doherty femenia
      haz sal Kdb Mahrez delefeu
      Wilson Arnie success

Much more value in midfield right now in my opinion.

Over the years you get used to calls to change formation. The truth is all squads and strategies are different and there is no sweeping best time to change formation. Or indeed any best formation at all. Hot prospects and bargain players are constantly shifting. Just do what suits your own team really and don't be drawn by group mentality on formation I'd say.

I'm considering getting some cheap defenders to rotate and invest more in my midfield. Going Mendy + Alonso in defense, Doherty and 2 cheap defenders like Balbuena and Fermenia. I'm also considering downgrading Mitro to freed up cash maybe to get a midfield like Salah, Hazard, KDB, Fraser and Aguero + Arni up top going 4, 4, 2

    2FTs. Where should I spend?

    Alonso / Robertson / Trippier / Shaw / AWB
    Hazard / Sterling / Maddison / Fraser / Hughes
    Aguero / Mitrovic / Wilson
    0.3 ITB

    A) Trippier -> Mendy (save 1FT)
    B) Shaw/x -> Mendy/x (who to downgrade?)
    C) Other suggestions?

Hello everyone, a little bit of help much appreciated. I have 2 FT and £0.7M ITB.

Not really sure of what to do as don't really want to burn a transfer and not sold into getting any Bournemouth players or rotation risks Barkley and Martial

    Team:
    Patricio / Hamer
    Doherty / Mendy / Luiz / Robertson / AWB
    Salah / Hazard / Richarlison / Schurrle / Obiang
    Aguero / Arnautovic / Jimenez

    A) Patricio -> Fabianski (set and forget)
    B) Hamer -> Fabianski (rotate Patricio & Fabianski afterwards)
    C) Patricio + Hamer -> Ryan + Button
    D) Obiang -> Diangana / Stephens / Any other fodder
    E) Obiang -> Murphy / Kenedy (play 3-5-2 next 2 with Jimenez tough fixtures)
    F) Schurrle -> Barkley (only if Hazard not fit?) / Pereyra
    G) Obiang + Jimenez -> Barkley (only if Hazard not fit?) + Success
    H) Jimenez -> Success
    I) Jimenez + Luiz -> Success + Alonso

Any other moves you would suggest?

    Thanks in advance.
