How Mohamed Salah is faring in FPL compared to last season

After studying how Sergio Aguero (£11.4m), Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) and Harry Kane (£12.4m) have fared in 2018/19 compared to their best-ever Fantasy Premier League seasons, we now turn our attention to the most premium of premium picks: Mohamed Salah (£13.0m).

In this mini-series, we look at the key underlying statistics of some big-money assets and analyse how the figures from this campaign are matching up to their stand-out FPL seasons in the past.

For Salah, his zenith was a record-breaking, 32-goal 2017/18 in which the Egyptian racked up 303 points in FPL.

Very few Fantasy managers are expecting the Liverpool midfielder to match that haul of last season, which is, of course, a bit of an issue given that Salah’s price has rocketed up to the £13.0m mark.

Salah’s “triple-hundred” in 2017/18 came courtesy of 32 goals, 12 assists, 15 clean sheet points and 26 bonus, scored at a rate of 8.42 FPL points per match (PPM).

The former Chelsea and Roma midfielder missed only two Premier League matches altogether, with just two of his 36 top-flight appearances coming off the bench.

Salah is an ever-present this campaign, averaging 6.25 FPL points per match.

With competition for attacking places at Liverpool perhaps fiercer this season than it was in 2017/18, we can surely expect Salah to miss out on a few starts as the fixture schedule gets ever-more congested, though Jurgen Klopp has resisted the urge to rest last season’s talisman (in the league, at least) with three months of the campaign already gone.

If Salah avoids injury and goes on to make the same number of league appearances in 2018/19 as he did last year (36) while scoring at his current rate, we can expect the Egyptian to rack up somewhere in the region of 225 FPL points – although any dreaded “one-point” cameos off the bench would, of course, affect that rather crude forecast.

With so many unknown variables to take into account between now and May, it is pretty futile to make such a projection based on PPM.

Instead, we will look at Salah’s attacking KPIs from last season to see how his current underlying statistics contrast with those of 2017/18.

Is Jonny a viable option at 4.5?

    I’m looking to do Mendy + Fraser > Martial + 4.5.

I really hate paying down for the second best option (first being Doherty) because it tends to backfire spectacularly...i.e. Christensen last year, as one example.

Best option at 4.5m, I think. Dunk or Balbuena, maybe too.

I’ve got Duffy, and really only prefer Fabs from WHU as I just can’t come around to trusting their defense despite fixtures.

I may well just go Doherty and pass on Martial for another week. Fraser at home even against Arsenal isn’t a bad fixture.

Is downgrading a City defensive asset to a 4.5m punt worth it? When all it allows you to do is Fraser to Martial?

Shaqiri really deserves a prolonged run in the starting 11 for Liverpool. Unfortunate that Mane got booed so much for Senegal, as that will probably make him more nailed for the Watford game.

I think we'll play 4231 vs Watford Shaq will start and 2 cm's.. Klopp will rest at least 2 cm's for PSG midweek when he'll switch to 433.. Shaq could also come back in after psg next week and hence get a nice little run going..

Guys, how vulnerable is TAA's spot in XI?

His only rival is Joe Gomez, who is mainly playing together with VVD and there were several games when Lovren was benched while he played. On the other hand, when Lovren played, Joe Gomez was mostly benched apart of 3 games in a row.

Summarizing, what do you think on Mendy=>TAA for free?

    1. Uncle Avram

My sense is that TAA will continue to claim minutes, pool are simply a better side with him in the XI. He likely will sit a match over the holiday stretch but so could many other top players, but he's in a side that has only conceded 5 goals thus far and still have some decent fixtures upcoming.

I'm thinking Gomez might be the budget pick. Will play CB with VVD when TAA is in the team, and play RB in tougher games with Lovren coming in.

TAA should get the majority of games at RB, and more importantly the easier ones, in theory.

Do you think Delph can be a good investment for the upcoming matches?

He played the two matches he was available when Mendy was injured in GW 5 and 6 and he played brilliant for England in two matches now.

I think he will play now. What do you think?

don't like it for several reasons:

      1. Not nailed and may get cameos
      2. Occupies a City slot, which can make transfers awkward if you decide you want three City "premium" players
      3. Plenty of options at that price or cheaper - TAA, Stones, Doh

Which rotation do you prefer? Done up to GW16 as I plan to WC for 17
    A) Doherty/AWB (HUD, car, bha, new)
    B) Digne/AWB (CAR, BUR, NEW, WAT)

B has better fixtures and Digne's attacking stats look good. However, I feel Doherty is superior in terms of attacking threat to Digne and more likely to haul in one of the games. Wolves also arguably the better defensive team and more likely to keep CS on paper? What do you guys think?

Am looking at this also. I need a defender I can start in GW's 16,18 and 19 as my other defenders have tough matches those weeks.

An Arsenal defender would be ideal, but it's an Arsenal defender. I'm thinking of going with Diane and switching in 4 weeks. Not sure though.

        Yes, I do 😉

But regardless of my own bias, he is looking incredible for Switzerland here.

Could have just checked your link. There's an obvious bias there and you need to compare his chances of starting for Switzerland vs Liverpool. Last GW was a given to start and as Epic says above, he might not in the next one.

I own him and keeping but people shouldnt get him in until its clear he is getting a more important role with more minutes than hes had so far in the season.

    WILDCARD, this?

    Pickford | Hamer
    Laporte | TAA | Luiz | Chilwell | Duffy
    Hazard | Mane | Richo | Fraser | Jorginho
    Aguero | Vardy | Arnautovic

    to THIS?

    Lossl* | Hart*
    Laporte | Robbo* | Alonso* | Trippier* | Holebas*
    Hazard | Mane | Richo | Fraser | Kenedy*
    Aguero | Jimenez* | Arnautovic

Eh? Why? Pickford has 3 home games in the next 4.

Just do Vardy > Jiminez, for now and Robbo and Alonso certainly aren't essential this week.

I can't see him parking the bus. If there's any ground to go and try for a win it's Old Trafford.

No substantive updates, no. Hughes doesn't think the Ings injury is too serious though. Just have to wait until Friday for clearer news.
