Goals galore in latest FFScout Charity Cup

A crisp November Saturday saw the second FFScout take place at Parmiters School, Watford, with five teams of FFScout regulars and guest players competing and raising money for CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).

In the group stages, MyPrettyPony’s TWFC side showed the best cohesion, perhaps unsurprisingly since most of them play together regularly in a midweek work team.

A tight opening game saw TWFC finally hit Hilton FC on the break to open the scoring before Hilton’s defender fired in a wonderful own goal from an acute angle to settle TWFC nerves.

A late third for TWFC was somewhat harsh on Hilton FC, who were more than a match for their opponents in every aspect except the score-line.

Meanwhile, on the other pitch, the two Scout heavy teams shared the spoils in a four-goal thriller.
ScoutB came back from the shock of conceding two early goals from Bhuna and BenS (both continuing their fine form in front of goal from our last tournament), to restrict ScoutA to just one point, ultimately to prove their only point of the group campaign.

Both Hilton FC and Flitwick Leisure struggled in front of goal, each hitting the target in just one of their four league fixtures, yet the latter went unbeaten and recorded just a solitary goal against to finish the league in second, behind a TWFC which recorded good wins against both the FFScout sides.

Following the mini-league competition and with some players having to depart early it was agreed that teams would be shaken up a little for a separate knock out challenge featuring just four six-a-side teams.

Despite their unbeaten league campaigns, both TWFC and Flitwick Leisure crashed out in the semi-finals, losing out to Scout A and Scout B respectively to set up an intra-Scout cup final.

In truth, though, the two Scout sides largely cancelled each other out in a final to forget with chances at a premium and Scout A going closest when a header from Paul came back off the bar.

Scout B then punished tired legs in defence as the excellent RMT Professor picked out CouldGetMessi and his low drive beat sweeper keeper, Matzi, to nestle into the bottom corner and secure the cup for ScoutB.

The football was enjoyable, the facility fantastic and the evening drinks well earned, but of course the main purpose of the day was to raise funds for CALM, who work to prevent male suicide in the UK.

We were delighted to raise over £350 on the day with a similar figure being donated online to the Just Giving page here.

At the time of writing, the total raised stands at over £650. Thank you to everyone who played or just contributed.

    Any advice?

    Ryan,

Alonso, Robertson, Laporte, Bennett / Wan B

    Hazard, Salah, Fraser , Richarlison(c) / Maddison*

    Aguero, Arnautovic / Success

    1 FT, 0.0 ITB

    A) Save FT?
    B) Maddison => Gudmonsson and switch to 3-4-3
    C) Keep Maddison if pressers confirm he is clear to play.

Fully rested, West Ham have a worse defence than Watford and I feel like Pool will try to conserve as much energy as possible for PSG in midweek.

Mendy to Digne with my only ft in order to get funds to upgrade Madds to Martial/Bilva
    Ryan
    Alonso TAA Doherty Digne
    Salah Hazard Richarlison(c)
    Aguero Wilson Arnautović
    Hamer Madds, Hojbjerg AWB

Am I GTG or should I do Madds to Martial for a hit and bench Arnie?

The only problem that it gives you is who to bench. But I guess that is a “good”. problem to have.
Lads, any thoughts on the order of my bench? RMT is suggesting to bench Alonso, which I think is crazy.

          My current thinking is:
          Patricio
          Alonso - Robertson - Doherty - Digne
          Salah - Hazard - Fraser - Martial
          Aguero - Mitrovic

Bench: Hamer; Arnautovic - Billing - AWB

I’m considering benching Arnautovic given his fixture against MCI. Alternatively I could benchmark Mitrovic, but he his playing leaky SOU. Maybe Fraser who is playing ARS, but ARS has only had 3 clean sheets.

My bench currently is: Hamer; Arnautovic - Billing - AWB

      Patricio
      Alonso - Robertson - Doherty - Digne
      Salah - Hazard - Fraser - Martial
      Aguero - Mitrovic

Thinking of going for Mendy and Deulofeu > Digne + Richarlison with my 2 FTs?

Leaves me with the following. Rather lightweight at the back but will bring Alonso in over the next few weeks when I decide which of my big hitters to downgrade. Whaddya think?

    Ryan
    TAA Doherty Digne (Balbuena AWB)
    Salah Richarlison Haz Sterling (Hoj)
    Kun Arnie Jim

Imagine if people used xG in other sports...

"Those backhands had really low chance to hit based on an average of a lot of trash players, Djokovic is overperforming massively"

      1. JasonG123
        • 10 Years
        5 years, 6 months ago

You need to compare a player's own xG currently to their historical xG. It's not a hard adjustment to make.

        1. Brosstan
          • 9 Years
          5 years, 6 months ago

No one ever does that though. Not in any of the articles Ive read anyway, not on here or anywhere else FPL related. Great example is Martial. His specialty is those shots from the left into the far corner, its simply incorrect to claim that they have 0.05 or even less xG when its him taking the shots, yet you will see people repeating endlessly "hes overperforming, just look at his xG".

          1. JasonG123
            • 10 Years

More sophisticated analysts have done it. If they don't then this is a way to gain an advantage on your misinformed competition.

I recently listened to a podcast and he said Messi consistently outscores his xG (by about 25%). Hazard is another one who consistently outscores his xG.

So really xG is a useful tool, but you need it in combination with other data, the eye test and your own gut to make a decision.

If you're referring to TFF's article I did make a comment on his article about this.

39 goals on 30 xG, lots of those speciality shots registering as goals on the map below too.

        Hahaha 😆

Good point. Saw somewhere recently that Messi is outscoring his xG comfortably this season (probably has in most of his seasons). Shouldn't come as a surprise that better players can score from less shots or lower percentage shots.

xG is just a simple measure of chance quality based on historical data of previous shots. I don't know what data FFS has/uses but it varies from site-to-site and takes into account so many things. Shot location(the main one), type of shot(headed/set-play/open play/counter attack), type of player assist(cross/long pass), number of defenders and angles, GK position etc.

            • 9 Years

The chance that an average footballer scores from a shot from an identical position.

As a very simply example to show how xG is flawed, a penalty shot has a 0.78 xG no matter the penalty scoring record of the penalty taker. Rooney and Kane would have the same 0.78 xG when taking a penalty, even though Rooney would be overperforming at a 0.78 rate while Kane would be underperforming.

Sterling owned by only 9% and Alonso will be home to Fulham owner by almost 50% and is the highest scoring player in the game. It’s not too easy for me.

      Best Option?

      -> Sit on my team

Seriously thinking about vvd as replacement for Mendy. I really think he’ll bang in a few soon. Been so close lately. Already have Robbie. Other choice is someone cheap like Duffy and use funds to bump up other areas. Not too keen on Laporte as I think a rest is coming. Plus, prefer to save my city players for mid and for. Thoughts?

I felt the double up was too much. That said, Wilson has been massive value. Nothing to say he could be a third striker for the rest of the season if you got him cheap

The doherty situation this weekend should be very interesting... If he returns, he's cemented his status as ridiculously good value and a season keeper... If he blanks it will actually be his 6th blank in 8 games which is not good in anyone's books, even though he had those hauls to boost his score

          Currently set up like this:

          Ederson (4.0)
          Trippier* Alonso Pereira (Bennet AWB*)
          Mane Fraser Shaqiri Hazard Richarlison
          Ings* Kane (Arnie)

          1FT £0.1itb

Looking at Kane to Kun on the basis that Bennet and Arnie are more than decent replacements for the guys flagged. Then Shaq to Anderson next week (not sure why people are still getting him in ahead of Citeh-meh!)

Anything else stand out? Cheers all

Tempted to bring in Trippier if he's fit. Yes, he has two bad fixtures coming up. Should come good long term though. Outscoring Laporte although having played over 100 minutes less. Seems like he always grabs an assist if clean sheet is gone. Thoughts?

          Salah Hazard richi deulofeu (Stephens)

Shaqiri will outscore Richarlison until he gets benched, which doesnt look likely.
