Captain Sensible – Richarlison tops poll in complicated Gameweek 13 debate

Gameweek 13 of Fantasy Premier League could prove the most difficult for the captaincy this season.

Both Manchester City and Liverpool are on the road this weekend which robs us of the opportunity to back a Salah or Aguero home captaincy.

Meanwhile, Chelsea travel to Spurs leaving the door open for a differential to prove the most popular. But is he the right option to go with?…

Captain Poll

Gameweek 13 sees a surprise leader emerge at the top of the poll in Everton’s Richarlison (£7.0m). No player has garnered more than the Brazilian’s 33.47% backing in the vote so far and when we dig a little deeper, it’s easy to see why. The makeshift centre-forward has three goals and one assist since Gameweek 8, recording an average of 6.6 points per match in his last five league outings. This weekend he goes up against a Cardiff City side conceding 2.2 goals per away match this season.

Below Richarlison is a selection of captaincy household names that have not quite earned the usual support from their owners. Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.5m) have rotated home fixtures quite nicely so far this season but both of them are away this weekend. For that reason, just 22.53% of our voters think Salah is worth captaining at Watford with even fewer (16.89%) supporting Aguero at West Ham.

The last time the pair were ruled out of the captaincy (when they faced each other in Gameweek 8) we were fortunate enough to see Eden Hazard (£11.3m) present a favourable trip to Southampton. This week Chelsea are away at Tottenham, pulling the Belgian out of widespread consideration. Accordingly, he looks set for a 10th-place finish in the captain poll with just 1.59% of the votes.

Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) heads up the best of the rest outside of the this week’s top three with 4.73% backing, after two goals and three assists in the last three Gameweeks.

He is followed by Anthony Martial (£7.6m), whose six goals in five matches has convinced 3.93% of you that he is the optimum captain for Gameweek 13 when Manchester United host Crystal Palace.

After that, it’s Salah’s Liverpool colleague Sadio Mané (£9.9m) with a 1.94% share.

Matt Doherty‘s (£4.9m) potential for big returns against Huddersfield has convinced 1.68% of our voters to back him for the armband, no defender has more backing for Gameweek 13.

Despite boasting more encouraging underlying statistics than team-mate Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) sits way down in ninth on the captain poll. That is almost certainly as a result of his current fitness issues, although his price does mean that his ownership is 20.6% lower than his Brazilian colleague.

I've had a daft theory that if team A is giving team B a thrashing the A defenders get slightly more complacent. How often do you see a 4-1, 5-1 or 6-1 scoreline with a consolation goal for B in the last few minutes? (as opposed to 4-0, 5-0 or 6-0). Arnie could easily score.

Who do you think will step up in GW13 and be a popular transfer in for GW14, and why?

Do you think it will be an already-established name in many of our sides or someone who is a major differential?

It appears a lot got rid of Mane due to several blanks. I've said it a few times recently. Klopp telling him he was now world class and he knows it last week.... being boo'd by Senegal supporters during the IB, signing a luxurious contract. I think he braces this weekend. I own Salah too and i'm tempted to give the armband to Mane

Is it in poor taste to suggest that everyone reading this thread do so with a grain of salt? Even if players mentioned above perform well, a single game’s performance does not a “breakout” make. Consider how Ross Barkley or Theo Walcott or Gerard Deulofeu would all have been included at different points this season. Rather than trying to preempt a 2-3 week bandwagon, look for consistent players on whom you can depend on the long term.

Case in point: Leroy Sane has received a lot of attention following Mendy’s injury, despite the fact that David Silva remains 0.5 less expensive and already has a defined role within the Man City squad. If you’re considering Sane, pause to remember Silva as well.

I can see how the wording maybe isn't as clear as it should be, I'll change it for next week.

The HT isn't necessarily talking about players to bring into our teams, more a 'who will perform well this week'. It isn't meant to be necessary that the player will then be a good option going forward!

I’m not too sure on getting rid of Gudmundsson myself. Is he nailed with Brady coming back?

He is a creator and they have a few nice home fixtures with teams not great at defending set pieces and headed goal attempts.

Really doubt it. Most got rid when he was out for just two or three. 6 weeks with a player down over the Christmas period which you’ve only made 0.1 on. Not much to think about.

I can't help but wonder if Richarlison may be a bit tired after the mid week match and flight back from Brazil. Coupled with some pretty poor stats, I wonder if this Cardiff game is going to be the match many hope it will be. That said, having no Richarlison in your team this week is risky, his ownership is high and he will be heavily capped.

I find it very odd that the player with the highest points per game currently has only 4.63% of the vote. Since when was going against the stats a good strategy? I have made Sterling captain without a second thought.

Suggestions of what to do here lads?

    Ederson (speroni)
    Trippier-Doherty-TAA-Cedric-bissaka
    Hazard-mane-siggy-neves-pereya
    Aguero-Wilson-Arnie

    1.9m ITB 2 FT

    thinking of doing

        Yeah that’s what I’m thinking.

Can do Mane to Sterling or Haz (if he drops).

Could be extravagant and get Sterling for one week and then switch to Hazard for next week.
