A fresh injury for Wilson as West Ham struggle without Arnautovic

Our write-up of the ten Gameweek 23 fixtures continues with a look back at a match that was contested on Saturday afternoon.

A Marko Arnautovic-less West Ham United fell to a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth, who lost Callum Wilson to yet another injury on his comeback from a hamstring problem.

We round up the main Fantasy talking points, relevant manager quotes and headline injury updates from the mid-table clash at the Vitality Stadium in our Scout Notes article below.

Bournemouth 2-0 West Ham United

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.5m), Joshua King (£6.3m)
  • Assists: David Brooks (£5.1m)

After scoring his tenth Premier League goal of the season and registering three Fantasy Premier League bonus points on his return from a hamstring injury, Callum Wilson (£6.5m) is back on the treatment table.

Wilson was replaced by Junior Stanislas (£6.0m) after 72 minutes of Saturday’s victory over West Ham United, with Eddie Howe providing an update in his post-match press conference:

I think it’s a problem with his knee. It’s nothing to do with his previous hamstring injury.

Callum’s very much a team player. He’s a vital part of what we do here and he knew how important the game was for us as a group. He delivered a very good display.

Joshua King (£6.3m) also hobbled off late in the match, with Howe telling Sky Sports:

Got nothing to tell you, we need to see how they are. Callum would appear the more serious, limping off, which is unlike him.

Any expectations of a goalfest at the Vitality Stadium failed to materialise and this was a cagier contest than perhaps anticipated, with not one shot on target being registered in the opening 45 minutes.

Wilson was at the heart of whatever the Cherries did well in attack, however, and showed just what his side were missing in the 2-0 defeat to Everton a week earlier.

The England striker’s goal was a superbly executed half-volley from outside the box and Wilson could have left with a double-digit haul had Lukasz Fabianski not brilliantly tipped his low drive onto the post just before the mid-price Fantasy forward’s substitution.

Wilson, who sits joint-first for assists among FPL forwards this season, could have banked an attacking return earlier in the game when his cross from the byline was nodded wide by David Brooks (£5.1m) with a fair chunk of the goal gaping.

King hadn’t previously scored since Gameweek 13 and it wasn’t until the final minute on Saturday that he registered his first shot on goal of the game, tapping in a Brooks pass after a swift counter-attack to put the match to bed.

Brooks and Ryan Fraser (£6.1m) continued in the same vein as much of the season: the young Wales international posing the bigger goal threat (registering more penalty box touches than anyone on show), with Fraser the arch-creator in the Bournemouth midfield.

On another day, the Scottish winger could have banked an attacking return or two.

Steve Cook (£4.4m) drew an excellent save from Fabianski with a header from a Fraser free-kick before the pint-sized midfielder’s deflected cross was almost turned in to his own net by Pablo Zabaleta (£4.3m).

Fraser was also denied an assist for Wilson’s goal, as it was deemed that Issa Diop‘s (£4.3m) tackle deviated the cross from its intended destination.

Fraser happened to be the provider of a Nathan Ake (£5.0m) header that was ruled out for offside, meanwhile, with Wilson judged to be interfering with play.

Howe sprang a surprise by naming Artur Boruc (£4.0m) in goal instead of Asmir Begovic (£4.4m) and explained his decision after full-time:

[Boruc’s] form’s been very, very good, he’s trained excellently. In our Carabao Cup game against Chelsea, he was outstanding and made a number of good saves.

You tweak other positions in the team without really thinking about it but the goalkeeper one is always analysed greatly and I understand why, but I just felt he deserved to play today.

He’s the ultimate professional, Asmir. He’s fine and he understood the decision and very much supported Artur and his performance.

Bournemouth recorded only their second clean sheet in 13 Gameweeks, restricting West Ham to one shot on target and generally looking more solid than they have been in recent months.

Howe said his side have been working on tightening up at the back:

We’ve put a lot of hard work into the last few weeks and concentrated on our defending. It goes without saying, after the run that we’ve been on that’s what we would do and I’m very pleased that the players got their reward.

While far from their best in an attacking sense, West Ham still had their chances: Samir Nasri (£5.5m) firing inches wide of Boruc’s post in the first half before Andy Carroll (£5.4m) somehow skied an effort over the bar from close range after the break.

Carroll led the line to little effect on a rare start up front before being replaced by the fit-again Javier Hernandez (£6.1m) midway through the second half, with the Mexican forcing Boruc into his only save of the game on 79 minutes.

Carroll wasn’t helped by the ineffectual performances of Nasri, Felipe Anderson (£7.3m) and Michail Antonio (£6.8m) behind him, with the manner of the Hammers’ meek away loss conjuring up memories of the 2-0 defeat to Burnley in Gameweek 20.

Manuel Pellegrini said:

I am disappointed with the result. Maybe we had lots of possession and good football but you need to create more chances and shoot more against a team that has conceded 12 goals in the last four games. That is something we did not do well.

West Ham, of course, were without Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) for this encounter, the Austrian having been omitted from the match-day squad after a week dominated by talk of a potential move to China.

It was difficult to argue that West Ham didn’t miss the nous of their talismanic forward given the difficulty they experienced in breaking down the Cherries but Pellegrini said:

As a manager, you must make decisions on the players that work better during the week. Marko has another issue so I thought that it was not a good idea for him to play today.

We don’t need to talk about a player that was not in the squad. I never complain about players who are not here. We have nine players injured, let’s talk about the ones here that we brought to play this game.

We didn’t win, Marko Arnautovic didn’t play, so we must have other players to step up.

Lucas Perez (£6.2m) was also omitted from the 18-man squad, with Pellegrini adding:

Same as Marko, I chose the 18 players who performed the best during the week.

Jack Wilshere (£4.8m) was once again missing but Pellegrini is optimistic of the midfielder’s return early next month.

The Chilean manager said:

He is continuing with his six weeks of rest about his ankle. He is in treatment and I hope that next week maybe he can start making some running, on the treadmill or the other gym.

He will be ready the beginning of February.

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Boruc; Clyne, S Cook, Ake, Smith; Brooks (Mousset 90′), Gosling, Lerma, Fraser (Daniels 90); King, Wilson (Stanislas 73′).

West Ham United XI (4-3-3): Fabianski; Zabaleta, Diop, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Noble (Diangana 78′), Rice, Nasri (Snodgrass 66′); Antonio, Carroll (Hernandez 66′), Anderson.

Keep this weekend and reassess after.

My thoughts and the data are changing day to day so when I am about to do the transfer of GW 25 this will be in almost 3 weeks time.

Can't say much but I am really tempted to ditch him

I agree. I don't think he'll do anything against Huds. He'll just making us think "damn, knew he was the one to drop"

Well if someone has DGW25 then that changes everything naturally. If you can afford to absorb Anderson’s drop in price for the moment I’d hold both until closer to deadline if your wanting to see about a potential DGW25

I don’t think the City game could be moved there but I read somewhere that Ben Crellin said there’s a SLIGHT chance the Spurs fixtures could be moved there if they beat Chelsea. Not too sure of the reasons or anything, it’s probably on his Twitter. Pretty sure it’s just an outside chance though.

Everyday without an announcement from the FA makes the 25 DGW less and less, because of informing the police and spectators.

Yup, I wouldn’t be holding onto an Everton player just because they have a DGW that includes playing City anyway.

What is bench for? Well, probably worth 2 pts. Yet City has ability to concede.

I’m not saying dump your Everton players, just that if you were considering moving one on a DGW in 25 wouldn’t change that for me.

That’s just a response to OPs original question of getting rid of Richarlison or Anderson. I originally said I’d dump Rich out of those two. Was posed with the question of ‘even with a DGW25’. I’m saying yes, even with a GW25 I’d dump Rich over Anderson.

I read it completely wrong. Bens saying Chelsea & City’s fixtures have a strong chance of being moved if they both win. Something about freeing up dates down the line for potential FA Cup replays

Man City at least will probably be in all other competitions, so that gw27 match vs Everton is more likely to be played early. I strongly doubt Spurs would agree to play during gw25 anything extra.

Slight? I'm reading there's a potential 65.74% chance, but idk what that depends on..

That percentage is simply the chance of neither City or Everton being involved in a replay. Worked out from bookmakers odds on their FA cup games at the weekend.

    Salah - Pog - Cama - Rich* - Haz*

Peeps with high TV, what's your points total look like?
      I'm on 1450 with a TV of 106.8 - all chips retained.

Everyone's right, it's been a weird season for the number of rises.
I reckon I could've had that on over 108.0 if I'd been prepared to take more hits.

Takings hits should always be about optimising your team to score the most points over a run of great form and/or fixtures. Never about chasing value, This is where so many managers' seasons come unstuck and they don't even seem to realise it.

It baffles me to be honest. Time and time again. Nobody will ever make up the lost ground from the majority of the season simply by having a bit of extra cash to spend on 2nd Wildcard. It just won't make that much difference when you're way behind the leaders already.

Exactly. Every decision you make should be about gaining the most points possible over a number of upcoming weeks. Chasing TV is about trying to make the most points in a very specific number of weeks (30ish onward). Being obsessed with those crunch weeks is drawing your attention to the more important 29 weeks leading up to them.

It's so true. Yet amazingly this is often ignored around here. There almost needs to be a series of FPL myth busting articles / videos. In my mini-leagues I see loads of value hunting, and I think it's the number one reason I pull away from the pack in the early part of the season.

Awesome season by the way mate.

Reckon we can catch OR1? I'm not giving up, so you definitely shouldn't be!

Slipped back a little last GW, but nothing disastrous. Held onto a FT so that could be useful for a quick climb back.

Cheers mate, same to yourself, flying it! Think most around our ranks will be flip flopping red & green arrows over the coming weeks, such fine margins between everyone!

I’ve no doubt 1 is attainable, probable is a different question though haha. Trying not to let it influence my decisions.

Pretty happy with my squad and plans. Just gotta ride it out now and see what spanners FPL has in the works! Well done getting that extra FT, need to save an extra one myself shortly.

For sure, it's pretty hard to stay consistently right up there without mixing green and red arrows. There's just not much room above to climb to, but there's plenty of room below to slip to. It's exciting because if you do manage to put together a couple of big gameweeks, the top 10 is really not that far away for either of us. I can only dream.

As for OR1, I don't think he is going to win FPL. Doesn't mean one of us will haha, but I think someone is going to catch him. He's used the Free Hit, that's a big chip in my opinion.

Have you got all you me chips left? Used my WC a few weeks ago and TC on Aguero early season (7 pointer not his big haul unfortunately)

My biggest debate at the moment is whether to use my FH in 31 or the final DGW. I think I’ll be able to navigate 31 easily enough without it. Will have to see how things shape up after this weekend I suppose.

Yep all 3 chips plus WC still intact. I know they don't guarantee massive points swings, but they are definitely a trick up the sleeve I'm happy to have.

TC not a big deal I don't think. Using your 2nd WC could cause a few problems around the DGWs, but if you plan well it doesn't have to be a major issue.

I think you should try to navigate GW31. That's what I'm doing, and if I didn't my WC in the back pocket I'd be even more inclined to go this way. You're probably going to need your FH to make a powerplay when others are wildcarding, whereas GW31 looks set up for just getting 11 decent players out including triple Liverpool. I doubt free hitters can come up with a much better starting team than anyone who plans ahead. I tried making a mock team for GW31 and I couldn't even spend close to my budget. It's 3 x LIV plus a bunch of okay players with okay fixtures. Saving that FH for later could be huge.

Agreed on 31, reckon the free hit is worth 10-15 points over good transfers and planning. Free Hit on a DGW should be worth 30 points.

Am I correct in saying FPL in its current form / website started in 06/07? I notice a lot of the veterans histories start then (and mine).

I was playing before that in the days of Henry etc. but recall I had to re-enter my team refresh. Anyone recall or have a link showing an earlier season.

No idea, I’m having the same issue myself! I’m considering Boruc but he has the same problem as Speroni, notnsure if he’ll retain his spot. Ideally I like to only do GK transfers very sparsely throughout the season. I brought in Guaita right before his injury, that’s just bad luck, bringing in someone who isn’t certain of a start is bad management though!

Hey there Ruth, do you feel CHE will bounce back after that abject performance and Sarri's rant?

No idea. I don't like Sarri-ball myself and like a lot of fellow Chelsea fans cannot understand what Jorginho adds to the team. Defensively inept, weak, lacks vision... OK, he can be a metronome for the team but he has to have continual protection in order to do so and that means Kante is reduced to being Jorginho's water-carrier. Which is nuts really; Kante is the far better player.

The Regista role has never really worked in English football. If Sarri wanted a DM with a great range of passing he'd have been better using Luiz there I think.

Conte was almighty stubborn about his system and Sarri appears to be also. It may well all end in tears. But Higuain will certainly make a difference, the guy is exceptional. And Chelsea have excellent players so they will always win more than they lose; they were pretty unlucky to be beaten by Spurs in the EFLC 1st leg I thought.

Anyway... I am going on Thursday so will have a better idea after that perhaps.

PS: If Jorginho had Pirlo's vision and range of passing then it might be worth building a team around him. But he's simply not that good.

Pirlo was some player phew! A somewhat underrated player that I like, who can play that role well is Ever Banega.

Nice, enjoy! You badly need Higuain or a player of his pedigree up top atm, Hazard false 9 doesnt seem to be working and Sarri obviously doesnt have faith in his two strikers.
Kante role is a bit odd, I do argee, although you may be being a little bit harsh on Jorginho.

That's the only concern, but Rich's form is terrible.

I'll more than likely hold and hope for double return on each

I've been considering Jota or JWP as possible Richarlison replacements, if you really want rid of him perhaps just look at that in isolation.

His form is terrible & Silva keeps talking about how he’s just as good as a striker as in the wing. He clearly isn’t as good. Silva’s inability to adjust to this is massively holding Rich back IMO. If he stops playing striker then he’s right back on my radar.

I can afford Hazard to drop three times and will only lose 0.1. Regardless of that insignificant fact, and despite CHE's recent form, he's an easy hold for me with those upcoming fixtures. Even better if Spurs progress in the cup!

    Curious to know answer.

How many chances per game do you think Higuain had at Milan, Juventus and Napoli?
I don't know myself but interested to see if anyone knows.

Cheers, looks like 3.7 per game.

        Paul Merson on Sky.
He won't score many gor Chelsea as it's a tougher league.
He won't be getting 15/16 chances a game at Chelsea.
Implying that's what he had in Italy.

The guy is an imbecile and gets paid for this crud.

Last 15 games Kane 51 shots(didn't play last and 19 min cameo 1 week) next 4 47-41. No way he gets as many chances in EPL

He’s a proven goal scorer. Whether he will adapt or not is the issue. Chelsea will have short term expectations from him which could create extra pressure on both Higuain and Sarri.
