No early return for Son yet as South Korea progress in the Asian Cup

Following our first round-up on Tuesday, our reports from the Asian Cup continue with a look at how South Korea fared in their round-of-16 tie against Bahrain.

South Korea 2-1 Bahrain (AET)

On the day Dele Alli was ruled out until March with a hamstring injury, Son Heung-min and South Korea extended their stay in the Asian Cup to dash hopes – for now, at least – of an early return for the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.

The Taegeuk Warriors were surprisingly taken to extra time by Bahrain in Rashid yesterday, with Son lasting all 120 minutes of the encounter.

This was Son’s second appearance of the tournament following his departure from north London after the defeat to Manchester United in Gameweek 22.

The in-form Spurs midfielder had played 89 minutes of his country’s 2-0 victory over China last Wednesday, with Son winning the penalty for South Korea’s first goal and then supplying the assist for Kim Min-jae’s headed second.

There was no attacking return against Bahrain but Son was involved in the build-up to South Korea’s first goal, with his pass out to the flank leading to a cross that was turned in by Hwang Hee-chan.

Son was mostly utilised on the left flank in this match, having been deployed in a more central position in his first appearance of the tournament against China.

Bahrain had clearly pinpointed Son as the danger-man in the South Korea side, too, doubling up on the Spurs player whenever he was in possession and not averse to fouling the FPL midfielder to curb his influence.

Son said of his team’s efforts:

It was a tough game. It’s all about attitude, as well, and I’m a bit unhappy with our performance. I think we’re better than that.

South Korea’s progression to the quarter-finals means Son will definitely miss the second leg of Spurs’ Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Thursday, though there is still the chance the midfielder will return in time for Gameweek 24 if his nation are dumped out of the tournament by Qatar this Friday.

An exit at the semi-final stage next Tuesday could see Son back on UK shores in time for the Gameweek 25 visit of Newcastle United, given that the third-place play-off in this competition has now been abolished.

Should South Korea go all the way to the final, Son will return for the Gameweek 26 encounter with Leicester City at Wembley.

Spurs, meanwhile, issued the following statement about Alli:

Following scans and clinical assessment, we can confirm that Dele Alli has suffered a hamstring strain.

Dele will now undergo a period of rehabilitation with our medical staff with the expectation of returning to training in early March.

The Lilywhites should, at least, have Lucas Moura (£6.8m) back in time for Gameweek 24 after Mauricio Pochettino said the Brazilian midfielder was “nearly 100 per cent” following the win over Fulham.

South Korea’s other Premier League representative in the Asian Cup was Ki Sung-yueng (£4.7m) but the Newcastle United midfielder’s tournament is over after he picked up a hamstring injury.

The Magpies yesterday confirmed the player had returned to the club in the following statement:

Ki Sung-yueng has returned to Newcastle United after a recurrence of a hamstring injury suffered on international duty with Korea Republic.

He first picked up an injury during his country’s opening game of the Asian Cup, against the Philippines on 7th January, and was substituted.

After suffering a recurrence in training, the 29-year-old has been recalled by the Magpies.

He is now back on Tyneside, where his injury will be assessed by the club’s medical staff.

It's funny you posted that actually as last night I was researching American history and found Chomsky's "The Crimes of US Presidents" and when he got to Nixon it was such a "given" he passed on him with a wry smile.

I think now is the perfect opportunity for non owners to bring Auba in. Plenty of rest between fridays FA Cup game and Tuesdays home game with Cardiff, which i beleive will be a mauling, if the game goes ahead, Cardiff heads wont be there. Then an away game with City which they’ll lose before an easy tie with Huddersfield to bounce back after the City loss!

Question: Why haven't I seen people getting on Southampton players? Eye test, they look really good since Ralph came on. Redmond and Ings unlucky not to get a haul vs Everton. Low-owned players with good games coming up still. Ticks a lot of the boxes, and yet people still not taking the seriously.

    Just surprised.

They always looked good on eye test for certain period, dont they?

Bad experience with likes of Tadic/Cedric/Gabiaddini/Redmond is probably the reason...

But I havent seen them play recently, so no clue. Southampton vs Arsenal was pretty good...

They're great. Pressing high, defending well. Quick counters through Redz and Ings. Passing the eye test with flying colors.

Another player who I thought looked very good was Hojbjerg. People think of him as bench fodder, but he really likes to make those runs in the box as an alternative to Ings/Redmond in the box. Almost ran though on goal if it werent for a Zouma tackle. Pinged balls through the Everton defence like bloody Iniesta.

Hey folks, considerig playing my WC this week and would love your opinions on how the team is shaping up! Current team:

    Foster / Hamer

    Alonso / Robertson / Doherty / Digne / AWB

    Salah / Hazard / Pogba / Richarlison / Fraser

    Rashford / Success / Kamara

    £4.2m ITB

I'm unhappy with Alonso, Hazard, Richarlison, Fraser form - and Hamer, Success don't play (Kamara only ever likely to get 1-2 points off the bench. Shiny new WC team:

    Etheridge / Speroni

    Robertson / Digne / Doherty / Kolasinac / AWB

    Salah / Sane / Pogba / Jota / Brooks

    Aubamayang / Pogba / Jiminez

    £0.0 ITB

Everyone starts, Jota and Kola small differential punts but can easily be swapped out for Pereira / 5.5 MID - I am not concerned about transfer window as I do not like to purchase players new to the PL without seeing them first

Bonkers. You've only made a few changes, which a few FT's and a judicious hit could have enabled

And you're gonna feel bloody daft if Chelsea get a DGW 25 and you've just got shot of Alonso and Hazard

      Apart from that: it's ace

        • 9 Years

It's 7 changes, so just under half the squad - a bit more than FT's and a hit could accomplish. I do take your point about Chelsea though, Hazard C on a DGW would be great if he links up well with Higuain and hits form

This sane / Mendy narrative is not the same now as it was in the early part of the season where pep clearly had issues with sane and he was probably low after the world cup snub..its totally different now. He is arguably their most important player. He was subbed off after 70mins against Huddersfield to protect him imo...Mendys form prior to his second injury wasnt good either.

I'm waiting till gw28 to get city asset(s) exactly To get this dilemma sorted.
Enough matches would be played till then to take a conclusion from it.

you ll need city assets if they have a dgw25 though.

Yes. Can't see a way to get one right now though.
Hopefully Hazard also gets a dgw.
I'd Cap him & find a big wall to hide behind 😀

if chelsea has a dgw i m definitely captaining him.it's so tricky though, if chelsea and city have a dgw25, they play each other gw26 then blank. fh could be the answer but want to keep for later on...

          I just got Raz.

          Fire and forget.

Too many potential question marks over Sane, Dilva and Bilva for my liking. You kind of know where you are with Sterling (and KdB now he's back).

Not sure I buy the Mendy impacting Sane all that much - Sane is definitely on the crest of a wave - but he still has 3 blanks in the last 6 GW's and Newcastle away GW24 can be a sticky fixture at the best of times, with Rafa's horrible defensive style (remember they were expected to get a hiding at the etihad & look how that transpired).

Then home games to arsenal GW25 & chelsea GW26, which they should win, and score at least 3-4, but are they fixtures conducive to hauls?

Then blank GW27, champions league etc.

He should probably keep ticking with returns, but not sure it looks like a lot of hauls on the horizon

The last 3 winners of FPL:

      2017/2018 season:
Total Points 2512 - GW average score of 66.10 points

      2016/2017 season
Total Points 2564 - GW average score of 67.47 points

      2015/2016 season:
Total Points 2456 - GW average score of 64.63 points

This season is arguably the highest scoring season in living memory. To put into perspective how high scoring this season is, the current leader of FPL has a gameweek average of 71.52 points and the double gameweeks havnt started yet! I know he's played some of his chips but still!

btw two highest scoring seasons are 2634 (avg. 69.31) for Suarez season and 2668 (70.21) for 09-10 season. I think the difference of this season is high scoring defenders and very few captain fails until GW15 or so.

Cheers for this. Shame he can't play tomorrow as it would have been a good first look at how Chelsea will line up/perform with a proper striker in a competative match. I can't imagine they will be full strength v Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

Spurs v Chelsea tomorrow is rapidly starting to resemble the walking wounded versus the walking dead! No idea who is going to reach the final in that one!

      Hi mates.

Which move you think would be more rewarding?

      1) Alli out // Eriksen in (free)

      2) TAA and Alli out // Trippier and Mane in (-4)

I already own Robertson and Salah

      Cheers!

          Button
          TAA, Robertson, Digne
          Sane, Pogba, Hazard, Salah, Alli
          Rashford, Himenez

          Guaita, Bissaka, Bednarek, Kamara

          1.9 itb

          Anu suggestion mate?

I'd be tempted to play AwB and save 2 FT for next GW.

Then downgrade Alli and get rid of Kamara for someone like Firming.

I would probably downgrade to Jota and bank the cash for now due to lack of options and look to get Son when hes back

Alternative would be Ali > Camarasa and upgrade Kamara into a 3-4-3. Guessing that still wouldn't leave you enough for Auba?

      Next GW in FPL:

      Fabianski
      VVD - Digne - Doherty
      Pogba (vC) - Hazard - Salah(C) - Richarlison
      Aubameyang - Rashford - Jimenez

      Etheridge - WanBissaka - Pereira - Billing

      FT: 2
      ItB: 0.0

      Doubts:
      Hazard, richarlison --> sane, ?
