Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is expected to be the most popular captain going into Gameweek 1 of the new season.

His Liverpool side play host to newly-promoted Norwich City on Friday night.

The Canaries were particularly leaky at the back last season, even as they won promotion from the Championship.

Their goals conceded tally (57) in 2018/19 was the worst inside the top four and only four teams recorded worse than that in the division’s top 12.

By contrast, Manchester City were the only Premier League team (57) to score more than Liverpool in home matche last year (55).

With Sadio Mané‘s (£11.5m) involvement in Gameweek 1 hard to guarantee, Salah seems to be the obvious candidate to benefit from such an appealing opening fixture.

Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) could be an interesting difference-maker as Manchester City prepare for a trip to West Ham.

The Hammers could be without Mark Noble (£5.0m) and Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) in Gameweek 1 which would make them more vulnerable than they already are to the defending champions.

Manchester City scored four times on their last league visit to the London Stadium, with Sterling notching a goal and two assists.

The England international will also be in good spirits after scoring against Liverpool in the Community Shield final on Sunday.

Harry Kane (£11.0m) is also pulling some support in ahead of Gameweek 1 as Spurs prepare for a meeting with Aston Villa.

No forward had more shots on target than Kane last season.

You can now vote in the latest captain poll below, which will be used in our Captain Sensible analysis article later in the week.

I'm back on a Salah-less team. Bizarrely, it looks a lot stronger than the one I abandoned last week.
Three solid defenders, 5 OOP mids and 2 proper strikers

    Ederson (4m)
    VVD, Digne, Maguire (Duffy, 4m)
    Sterling, Martial, Moura, Perez, Robinson
    Auba, Wilson (Greeny)

    cash in bank.

And I know, if Liverpool win 6-0 yada yada. The deal is, going light on Liverpool gives you a lot.

      Salah vs NOR, sou

      Vs

      Sterling vs whu, TOT

Odds are majorly stacked against you here mate, I don’t look at your team and think wow look at the extra players you can get.

I think there are times where you could take a calculated risk going without Salah, but st the start I don’t feel it’s worth it.

That aside, for a salah-less team, it’s probably as good as it could get.

      Good luck either way!

I like it but similar to others I’d say it’s very risky going without Salah. Also due to ownership and captaincy it’ll really hurt your rank if he does well.

If you’re set though I’d do Martial -> Fraser.

Due to fixtures it’s quite easy to wait 2 weeks to see how Martial looks and Fraser aligns perfectly. I definitely fancy Martial to do well this season though too.

It could work really well - but you'd just need to make sure you commit to it and hold your nerve - don't knee jerk for example if Salah braces v Norwich and then nicks another goal or assist or two v Southampton etc

I wouldn't have the likes of Maguire & Martial in my GW1 team for all the tea in China, but equally I can see a situation where they do well (nothing suprises me in FPL anymore)

    A

A few weeks ago he was in every single team.
I even came here to discuss how he is still in my team and its hurting my eyes XD
I think Evertons lack of form in pre season has made a lot of people bail.

Missed 4 of his last 7 pens
      23 blanks last season
0G 0A in last seasons equivalents of his opening 5 fixtures (excl. Villa)
      Price went up

No doubt he could do well but owners will need PATIENCE

Stats can be skewed to suit any point of view. The fact remains he was the 4th highest scoring mid in the game last season and with those favourable fixtures it’s a good early bet he can provide points.

          • 16 Years

I totally agree he was the 4th highest scoring midfielder and I also said there's no doubt he could do well

          That doesn't contradict my point

            • 14 Years

Everton are still sorting out their attack. Despite the nice opening fixtures, it's prob best to wait a couple of weeks. Start with defenders though, no problem!

Their fullbacks interest me personally a lot more - the fact that they've both actually outscored Siggy this year (Digne from 2 less games and Coleman from a massive 4 less games) speaks volumes

      2. Udo

Agree with that, plus having to stick with a 8 mil player for "longterm" to secure (if thats the right word for it), refund takes away a bit of the flexibility in my opinion.

      • 10 Years

As others have said pre-season form is a major contribution.

He’s show in the past he’s one to have patience with but my anticipated tactic is to wildcard early so I’d rather take a chance on more explosive options such as Moura, Richarlison, Fraser around similar price point and then evaluate. Also Zaha @ 1m less would be hard to ignore.

One punt around that price bracket is fine I think.

You could also downgrade Digne to Coleman or one of Robbo/TAA to VVD to upgrade Barkley to a 6.5, i.e. Pérez

      2. Andy Unsocial
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 18 days ago

Wilson is nailed in my team.Vardy I'd consider downgrading but feels so safe with him in the team.
Robinson is my punt at the start of the season.Every year,a player of price 5.5 does very well eg,Mahrez, Fraser.I think he will do well.
I needed a player at 6.0m and Barkley, even though punty could nail down his place. He may miss the odd game, but if he is on pens,he could get points.

Allison waste of a liverpool spot. Get Robbo or TAA instead. Attacking threat.

      Looks good.

You must have 1 playing sub because you have to pick a 4.5 midfielder. Dendoncker will do.

Since you only have one playing sub and you have Zinchenko, you might want to do TAA to Robertson for security of starts.

One of the best strategies for selecting your Captain is to follow the polls - as per the above article - and make sure you're on the most popular captain according to these polls; however, when the poll isn't clear cut, and opinion is split, that's the time to look for a differential as Captain ~ someone you have a good feeling about. You won't lose as much ground if you get it wrong, but can make massive strides if you hit the target. In game-week 1 however, the opinion certainly isn't split. Salah, at home to Norwich, will be the clear winner by a long way. Get on him. Then sell him if you want to and share the money about your team.

Harry Wilson to Bournemouth is "practically done" . A loan where Liverpool wanted assurances over game time which would result in penalties if Bournemouth dont play him enough. I've also seen links of an Ibe loan to Derby. His contract runs out next summer

I would appreciate any comments on the following team and areas that could be improvied. Barkley is a risk, I know, but I have a hunch that he and Lamps will click.

    Pope - (Button)
    Digne - VVD - TAA - Zinch - (Lundstrom)
    Salah - Sterling - Martial - Barkley - (Robinson)
    Wilson - Wood - (Greenwood)

I wouldn't bet on Martial if I'm paying 7.5m. He's a ding dong fantasy asset. Suggestion, go for either Moura or Fraser in first three GW then switch to Martial if he hold up the place.

    Loris
    Chilwel TAA Cathcart Ake
    Fraser Salah Tielemans
    Kane Firminio King
    benck Ryan Schlupp Dann Kayal

    any opinions?

Palace awful at the moment so no Schlupp or Dann for me.

Lloris is a set and forget so sell Ryan for a 4.0 and that gives you a 0.5 to spend.

      It's definitely different.
Could pay off but I'd prefer a stronger defence.

      I prefer A over B.
Think Allison is a waste of a liverpool spot though.

Anyone out there thinkning of Origi as a good GW1 punt? Against Norwich who gave away goals a plenty in the Champoinship and Mane not slated to appear. 5.5 mil for a potential starting Liverpool winger

Agreed, I'm not totally against planning transfers but having only a price value of 5.5 generally leads to taking hits.

True but I dont see similar value even for 6.5 attackers. Im not on the Jota bandwagon. Tough starting fixtures and addeda 3rd attacker to the mix, Ings is a injury waiting to happen

      A) Safe until Son returns in GW 3.

      B) Nailed in my opinion.

      C) Toss a coin, but I fancy him to play more than Otamendi.
