Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is expected to be the most popular captain going into Gameweek 1 of the new season.

His Liverpool side play host to newly-promoted Norwich City on Friday night.

The Canaries were particularly leaky at the back last season, even as they won promotion from the Championship.

Their goals conceded tally (57) in 2018/19 was the worst inside the top four and only four teams recorded worse than that in the division’s top 12.

By contrast, Manchester City were the only Premier League team (57) to score more than Liverpool in home matche last year (55).

With Sadio Mané‘s (£11.5m) involvement in Gameweek 1 hard to guarantee, Salah seems to be the obvious candidate to benefit from such an appealing opening fixture.

Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) could be an interesting difference-maker as Manchester City prepare for a trip to West Ham.

The Hammers could be without Mark Noble (£5.0m) and Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) in Gameweek 1 which would make them more vulnerable than they already are to the defending champions.

Manchester City scored four times on their last league visit to the London Stadium, with Sterling notching a goal and two assists.

The England international will also be in good spirits after scoring against Liverpool in the Community Shield final on Sunday.

Harry Kane (£11.0m) is also pulling some support in ahead of Gameweek 1 as Spurs prepare for a meeting with Aston Villa.

No forward had more shots on target than Kane last season.

You can now vote in the latest captain poll below, which will be used in our Captain Sensible analysis article later in the week.

Think I've finally found my GW1 team.

    Pope
    Robbo-VVD-Digne-KWP
    Salah-Sterling-Pogba-Perez
    Wilson-King

Your thoughts would be much appreciated!

not sure about the double bournemouth attack, perhaps king to jota?

Any way you could find 1m to change pogba to KDB?

Don't like Wolves fixtures and they have Europe now, King can and probably will turn into a different 6.5/6m striker.

KDB was in a earlier draft, but not so sure about his FPL returns, Pogba is MU main man.

Haven't seen Pogba in many teams - at least it's different
KWP feels like a transfer waiting to happen
Not convinced on Wilson/King double up - but the fixtures are good so why not if you like it

Best to start with Ryan Button IMO, better fixtures and Pope's had a lot of injury problems lately

      Very similar to mine, except:

      VVD to Alexander Arnold
      Pogba to De Bruyne
      Wilson to Deeny

I really reckon De Bruyne will have another ~200 point season!

I'd rather King to Deeney, Wilson a much more proven goalscorer. KDB will have plenty of assist to the assister I feel.. But he has been in my drafts many a times.

    Anything glaringly wrong?

    Ederson, (button)

    Robbot, vvd, Coleman, Ake (Lundstrom)

    Salah, Sterling, barkley, Kdb (dendonck)

    King, Jota (Greenwood)

      Ederson poor value
Everton have signed Sidibe so Coleman at risk
Barkley is a nightmare waiting to happen
Jota rotation risk with new signing and Europe plus their fixtures

I've heard this a couple of times. Please can you explain the case for Ederson being poor value? Are you using PPM or something else?

        1. WVA
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 7 months ago

Not just PPM but 10m for two GK is crazy when it will only get you 160 points, 8.5 will likely get you 140 and Heaton Pope could get you more than both especially with city's opening fixtures, can't see any clean sheets plus the upgrades elsewhere with the spare cash.

          1. Hanked
            • 13 Years
            6 years, 7 months ago

If Heaton was likely to score 140 points, I would set and forget and bank the 1.5 but I think 140 is the high end of what's likely.

Heaton has scored almost 150 twice before but in both seasons he had penalty saves and kept 10 clean sheets. Will Villa keep 10 clean sheets? I have no idea but I would lean towards no.

As a comparison, Ryan got ~100 points last year. I think it's more realistic that Heaton scores 125.

In both situations we have to waste 4.0 on a sub keeper we will never use so it's easier to think about it as just 4.5 keeper vs 6.0 keeper.

I think Ederson's score from last year is entirely repeatable and not really subject to variance like keepers for lesser teams who rely on save and penalty save points. If we take the average from the past 2 years we will likely score ~164.

Is an extra 39 points worth 1.5... Probably.

            1. WVA
              • 9 Years
              6 years, 7 months ago

You've missed out the extra points that 1.5 gets you elsewhere. 6m defender, 160 points, 4.5 mil defender 100 points, better off with 4.5 GK?

              1. Hanked
                • 13 Years
                6 years, 7 months ago

Ye, I agree with that, hand't considered it because my teams not structured that way. If you plan to have a 4.5 defender, you are better off getting a 4.5 keeper and a 6.0 defender.

I don't have any defenders under 5.5 though and Ederson scores more points than any defender at 6.0 or under.

BTW, I'm currently deciding between Ederson and Heaton so I'm arguing with myself! Thanks for helping me work through it.

    Good afternoon everyone,

Pretty much finished my draft other than this last question, can anyone help?

    A) Digne, Fraser, Vardy
    B) Zinchenko, Barkley, Auba

They'd fit into the usual sterling/salah template

I've been on A for the past week as I'm a fan of the Fraser 7.5 price point, however Auba is starting to creep into my thoughts a bit too much

A without doubt. All 3 are nailed.

Zinchenko and Barkley will be rotated. They both face fierce competition. Auba was regularly rotated too last season. Not worth the stress

    guilbert's last 2 seasons:
2 goals, 4 assists, 21 yellow cards, 1 red card. literally cancelled out all his attacking points with card points.

also would concern me that he's only looking so nailed currently because elmo was at the african cup of nations

Considered this but not sure who else to back... Utd / Chelsea are a wait and see for me and then no obvious other options. I'd rather choose defenders for the season and then use my FTs elsewhere in the hope / trust that the city defence will come good overall.

    Whats everyone thoughts on Mahrez?
Sane is injured so won't start...
I have Zinchencko Sterling KDB at the moment.
Thinking of switch KDB out for Mahrez as KDB may assist the assister...

    Cheers guys

Mahrez won't get enough minutes to be an FPL asset

Don’t get Mahrez. Expect City’s front 6 will be the same as last season - no room for Mahrez even with Sane’s injury.

      Sterling Aguero Bilva

      Dilva Ferna/Rodri KDB

Keep KDB, great option when fit and firing

Cheers, yeah forget how deep their squad is! B.Silva will play higher won't he or even D.Silva tough call but probably stick with KDB

Out of those two, probably Ings, Southampton a more attacking team then Burnley.

anyone considering kane>aubs gw 2 then aubs>kane gW3? that way your skipping their nasty fixtures and hopefully get their hauls and miss the blanks

Can't micromanage transfers like that. You'll inevitably hop on some other bandwagon.

How does this look? I like it, think I may end up going with this - Murray will switch after gw3

    Ryan - 4.0
TAA - Robbo - AWB - Diop -(Rico)
    Salah - Sterling - Kdb - Perez - (Dendonker)
    Wilson - Murray (greenwood)

    4-4-2 most weeks

just like their first 3 fixtures, 2 home games in 2 and 3, and he is on pens, and been scoring in preseason.
As well as having what looks like a more attacking approach, will monitor how they look.
Am hoping one of the 6.0 will be obvious switch by then, but at the moment I like maybe Che Adams or Pukki as a punt.

yeah fair point. I have just seen some footage of wesley at villa. He looks legit. Big and strong. Decent fixtures after the first game. I am going to have a punt

Ings is more PL experienced and probably on pens, but Che has been the one who has been the more impressive. Presses aggresively, fights for space in the box, and a strong finisher. I'm going Adams.

Not seeing a lot of RMTs with Kane in seems a little risky with Vilka first game could do really well and will hard to get in without using an early wildcard

I like Kane, was in alot of my early drafts, but will likely go without, as I really want KdB.

      1)Kdb & Wilson
      vs
      2)6.5 mf & Kane

Feel like 1 will bring in more points early, and I have Sterling and Salah, so the Capt will rotate between them, cant have 11m and not capt him.
