Fernandes the key target for FPL managers using free transfers in Gameweek 31

Football may have come to a standstill amid the current coronavirus pandemic but the Fantasy Premier League ghost ship continues to drift onward towards an uncertain conclusion.

FPL’s decision to leave the Gameweek deadlines as originally scheduled (despite the postponement of top-flight fixtures over the next month and beyond) means that we have now endured two ’empty’ Gameweeks, with a further four to follow at the very least before we see a ball kicked again.

Given that the United Kingdom is about to embark on a virtual lockdown period that will last a minimum of three weeks, it would be a huge surprise if we are anywhere near ready for a resumption in Gameweek 36.

Despite the shortage of fixtures, the Gameweek rules in FPL remain the same – the most significant one of which concerns transfers.

Fantasy managers are granted a free transfer each Gameweek, with a maximum of two rolled over, which does present us with the option of carrying out some maintenance on our squads, should there be any pressing issues to fix.

While some FPL bosses will be leaving well alone until we have more concrete information about a possible restart or simply as a result of a loss of interest, others are using the opportunity to make small-scale improvements or carry out gradual overhauls of their squads.

Certainly, those without a second Wildcard remaining will perhaps be viewing this period as a time to rebuild ahead of the 2019/20 run-in, should we ever get to that point.

Why Calvert-Lewin could be next value forward as Alli unlucky at Norwich

There were 194,078 transfers made in Gameweek 31, which is a fraction of what we’d usually get in a regulation weekend but still a reminder that some FPL managers are keeping active during the downtime.

Bruno Fernandes (£8.5m), as he was in Gameweeks 28 and 30, was the most-bought player, and he is already the most popular purchase of what would have been the March international break.

The Portugal international has hit the ground running at Manchester United, averaging 7.6 points per match in his first five league starts.

No player has delivered more attacking returns in FPL than Fernandes since he made his Red Devils debut.

It’s perhaps not just the Portuguese’s form that is attracting investment but his fixtures too, with United facing six bottom-half teams in the run-in – whatever order they might be in.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.4m) will have a plum Gameweek 36 fixture (v Aston Villa) if a miracle happens and the Premier League restarts in early May and he trailed only Fernandes in terms of Gameweek 31 transfers in.

A Gameweek 29 blank at Stamford Bridge hasn’t deterred Fantasy managers from snapping up the Everton striker, who has scored more league goals since Carlo Ancelotti first took charge on Merseyside than any other FPL asset.

A handful of mid-price/premium defenders were also favoured recruits, with Matt Doherty (£6.3m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.3m) and Marcos Alonso (£6.1m), three of the most in-form players at the back, all attracting some support.

Ricardo Pereira‘s (£6.3m) injury and subsequent loss of ownership, more of which in a second, perhaps partly accounts for that.

Leicester City’s sidelined right-back, who is set to miss between four and six months of action with an ACL injury, may not see any more Premier League football in 2019/20 even if we have a delayed conclusion.

While it’s worth thinking twice about shipping out a player who is yellow-flagged in FPL at present, there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of a downside to offloading a player who may not even be ready for the start of next season.

Pereira was consequently the most-sold player of Gameweek 31, although still sits in over 950,000 FPL squads at the time of writing.

Danny Ings (£7.1m) is the most-ditched asset of Gameweek 32 as it stands and he trailed only Pereira for sales ahead of last Friday’s deadline.

Fitness isn’t really the issue with the Southampton striker but form is: he has blanked in six of his last seven appearances in the top flight.

The Saints enjoy some decent fixtures in the last quarter of the season (including Brighton, Bournemouth and Norwich) but having in-form alternatives like Calvert-Lewin as rivals in the mid-price forward bracket does dent his appeal at present.

Yellow flags in FPL may have been a reason why James Maddison (£7.5m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) were moved on by a combined 13,753 managers, although Maddison’s awful run of 12 blanks in 13 Gameweeks will have also been a contributing factor.

We usually bring you a stat-heavy summary of chip usage and player ownership in the top 10k after every Gameweek (in conjunction with Ragabolly’s LiveFPL site) but the hiatus has made that a worthless exercise, given how dormant many active managers are.

One manager inside the top 10,000 did, rather oddly, opt to play their Wildcard in Gameweek 31, and the make-up of that new squad (featuring the likes of Doherty, Fernandes and De Bruyne) suggests this was an earnest decision rather than an act of self-sabotage.

We can’t quite be sure about the 2,432 managers outside of the top 10k who used a chip in Gameweek 31 – some may have been acting in good faith but there are plenty of others towards the bottom of the rankings that appear to thrive on the wanton destruction of their own squads, so this could account for some of the figure.

Think we're going to start hearing a bit more about this in the coming days - the way Italy are recording Covid19 deaths (their death rate is approaching ~10% vs. less than 0.5% in Germany, with UK around ~5.0% & WHO global rate ~4.2%) is questionable to say the least, if not extremely questionable:

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/have-many-coronavirus-patients-died-italy/

Prof Ricciardi added that Italy’s death rate may also appear high because of how doctors record fatalities.

“The way in which we code deaths in our country is very generous in the sense that all the people who die in hospitals with the coronavirus are deemed to be dying of the coronavirus."

[That sentence alone should have people sitting up & saying "Sorry, you're doing WHAT?"]

“On re-evaluation by the National Institute of Health, only 12 per cent of death certificates have shown a direct causality from coronavirus, while 88 per cent of patients who have died have at least one pre-morbidity - many had two or three,” he says.

This does not mean that Covid-19 did not contribute to a patient's death, rather it demonstrates that Italy's fatality toll has surged as a large proportion of patients have underlying health conditions. Experts have also warned against making direct comparisons between countries due to discrepancies in testing.

It really is very hard to put much faith in any of these numbers being advertised by any countries at the minute - seriously unknown territory

It doesnt matter why people are dying. Hospitals cant cope with that many people at once.

Of course it matters why people are dying - hospitals being stretched beyond capacity and the importance of clarity on causes of death are not mutually exclusive

True, but it doesnt matter much to the layman. We've got to follow government advise. 2m's at all times, no exceptions.

Not sure who “people” or “the layman” are - but I think they can be trusted to appropriately digest the information that Italy are attributing:

“all the people who die in hospitals with the coronavirus are deemed to be dying of the coronavirus”

The difference between “With” and “Of” is huge

I have no idea how it works, but if people are dying from respiratory issues would it be more honest to describe it as with or of covid, even if they also had heart issues or whatever? I'm not that bothered really but all countries should be reporting it the same way imo

Yep, in addition to being utterly tragic, I think it’s a significant delineation between with & of - together with the extreme age profile and prevalence of underlying health conditions

yeah, I guess as Gink says if everyone just practises social distancing it doesn't really matter too much either way - but it is quite annoying how it's being reported differently with the lack of context.

Also, it's easy for people to moan at headlines like '39 year old dies of covid-19' (and not mentioning previous illness/condition) because it's 'unnecessarily scaring people', but that might not be a bad thing at all (unless people start rioting/looting obviously)

It’s such a slippery slope to take the “it doesn’t matter” approach though

The truth always matters - and the approach that bogus figures are justified because “the layman” or “the people” won’t do what they’re told without them doesn’t really sit well

As much of the truth as is available, and the good sense to follow the experts advice shouldn’t be mutually exclusive

yeah true, it does. I mean either way we won't really know for sure for about 6 months+ who did things better - sounds bad but just because people don't die now doesn't mean they won't in October if a second wave goes big at normal flu time. 'cocooning' for the win, although I don't think anywhere has really done that so it can't really be proven right annoyingly

I think we all have to look to Germany at the minute as the leader in terms of short term success - hopefully their relative avoidance of fatalities is sustainable and even transferable

6 months seems almost unimaginably far away but will come around eventually

Yeah - they seem to be one of those going with 'with covid' instead of 'of covid' so hard to tell.

I'm assuming there's a few reasons why it's not relevant, but Spanish Flu starting killing younger people on the second go round - we won't know until that happens/doesn't happen

that's why 'post-illness testing' needs to be a thing, loads of people are going to think they have it now (even if it was just a normal cold) and that they are still immune in October and ignore all advice. It could it could get way worse than this then (especially considering 'normal flu' hospital numbers at that time normally)

Well hopefully the German’s focus on testing massive volumes of people is something that the rest of the world can develop capacity to match in time

We do have a leading indicator in China in terms of what things look like months down the line, this broke in China nearly 6 months ago back in Nov’19 & they are now going as far as releasing the travel restrictions in the Hubei province (including Wuhan) at midnight tonight

Many a sceptic eyebrow has been raised at their officially reported numbers too of course, but taking them at face value - managing to limit a population of 1.5 billion people who were, for 5-6 months, exposed to an ultra contagious virus with such high mortality rates in certain geographies to just 3,000 deaths was phenomenal (if true)

yeah, testing massive amounts of people is pretty important, even longer term

Yeah I don't really doubt the China numbers too much (certainly not as much as some people) because they went nuclear with their shutdown - but I personally can't see how they don't get another wave within 4 weeks or so. I guess they can blame that wave on foreigners and they are then out of the woods, so to speak.

Be interesting to see what the US do, it's not going to be enforced very well at all I wouldn't think but that could be as close to 'cocooning' as we're going to get

The US situation could be grave apparently - I caught a sound bite from the Joe Rogan Andy Stumpf podcast the other day that some ridiculously high percentage of American households are literally living paycheck to pay check & cant afford a non standard expense above $400

And they’ve just shut down Los Angeles for a month... on the other hand Trump is saying he wants the US open for business during the whole thing - the economic & social ramifications could even possibly be greater than the actual virus health risk for a lot of households in the US unfortunately

No idea how this one is going to play out

yeah that's the thing, people just immediately think 'Trump only cares about the stock market/economy, he doesn't care if we die' but having everything close is not really an option for a LOT of people in that country (a depression would obviously be very bad for almost everyone) - they are kinda screwed either way, but if second wave immunity ends up being a thing that's some small silver lining - lots of people will die there, it's sad, but there's no easy way unfortunately.

Lockdown is the obvious knee-jerk response, but it really isn't that simple longer term (although it could also end up being correct) and a bad version of cocooning could be better than a good version of lockdown, however stupid that could sound/end up being - who knows

There are some very good episodes of Rogan, but he has literally done thousands of podcasts so it’s practically impossible to listen to more than a small percentage

He covers every topic under the sun though, so if you tune in to whichever guests interest you they’re great entertainmen

My personal favourites would be Paul Stamets, Randall Carlson & Graham Hancock all of whom he has on multiple times

But he’ll do some good topical podcasts as well - Michael Osterholm recently was very good on Covid19, he has loads of ex navy SEALs & special forces guys, stand up comedians, MMA fighters, software developers, Game developers, Elon Musk...

The daddy of them all though was the Alex Jones & Eddie Bravo episode around the time Rogan & Jones were having a bit of a feud around Jones’ court case - it ran for nearly 5 hours & must be one of the highlights of the 21st century for how out of control it got in a comedically ridiculous way - Alex Jones is a very, very loose canon

14-21-day incubation period is one reason, the other (related) reason could be 'viral load' which almost no-one is talking about.

Basically, being in a living room with say 5 other people (Italians have larger families in each household apparently, haven't researched this myself) that all have it (but don't know they have it) means that those 5 people get a higher viral load and are much more likely to seek/need testing/ventilators. This is the reason many doctors in other countries (especially those short of protective wear) are getting into trouble/dying themselves - basically more exposure to it makes it much worse, it's not just a case of just 'either you have it or you don't'.

In other words, for some people, lockdown could actually be worse (depending on family size/infection amount)

It’s hard to believe now - but as recently as 2 weeks ago cafes & restaurants were still open in Italy - and as of yesterday their infection rate and death rate were starting to slow down (albeit slowing down from tragically high baselines) unfortunately it looks like they both increased again today though - but with the way they’re reporting deaths the majority are not actually solely Covid19-driven at all

They also have the second oldest population in the world, huh rates of multiple generations of families sharing the same houses, very high rates of smoking and the strain on their health service that brings with it - as well as a huge volume of Chinese immigrants/workers in the textile industry in the north of the country - a recipe for disaster if ever there was one

yup, haven't worked since January 16th (Science teacher) and schools are still closed here indefinitely but things are getting back to normal pretty much slowly but surely! Being out for bicycle rides and eating out at restaurants and bars again feels good!

A quick question, they say family cannot visit each other in different households. How is this being managed? They expect people to do the right thing but it's impossible to manage.

I just saw family members visiting neighbours, probably for a cuppa and then left. They are not elderly but it's infuriating. Also it seems their son who has his own place is visiting during lunchtimes from his job at the local warehouse and just turned up again this evening probably to sleep over. He has his own place but continues visiting

If they stop people to ask where they are going, they could just tell them they are going home. But to whose home?

it's not really being managed but I guess it's just called self responsibility and community spirit, unless people want police/army putting people in vans/baton-ing people, then all that can be done has been done really

Having fun with my 4 year old keeping tabs on what deliveries our neighbours are getting. Number 6 - in self isolation took in a crate of wine today. Number 7 had Asda in while number 10 had a mystery package.

We made do with 20 litres of cat litter - we have 4 kittens all of whom refuse to use outside.

          I'm thinking about:
          A. Grealish >> Cantwell
          B. VvD >> Taylor
          C. Henderson>> Pope

With 1 FT & save other one

Cantwell? 43 points in the last 15 game weeks and that includes 2 hauls.

Norwich attack generally has been cack ever since. The reputation for attacking football is a chimera. Think of game week 1 away compared to the home game against Liverpool

I’m on Ayew - best value attacker in the game. Notionally I’d keep him. Palace don’t go on the beach historically. Can see him scoring a couple more anyway.

Pondering whether BB or TC is the play in notional bumper week. If it’s BB will go Wood.

If - bizarrely - you don’t fancy Palace attack I’d go Jorginho

Here's a tip for everyone go to the transfer page take out all your players & bring in the best players you can within your budget concentrating on teams with more games , add all these players to your watch list & bring them in one at a time each week

Not so easy take Spurs & Arsenal as an example
Kane 10.8 with 9 games to play or
Aubameyang 11.1 with 10 games to play
            Who would you choose ?
Also Sheff Utd pushing for Europe with a game in hand
Villa with a game in hand you must have Grealish and or McGinn (coming back from injury)

I thought of the idea independently a few years back, but I'm too idiotic to run it (and didn't think it would be popular) but given the current situation and with Ragabolly involved it could be great, very good idea imo - but I've got reading I've been putting off to do, and this could be a good time to do it...so prob not - have fun!
