The return to fitness of John McGinn (£5.4m) offers an alternative route into Aston Villa’s attack for Double Gameweek 30+.

But is it worth using the Scottish international to go without Jack Grealish (£6.4m) and save some money? That’s what some Fantasy managers will be asking ahead of Project Restart.

And for anyone looking to invest in a Villa attacking double-up, is McGinn necessarily the right person to compliment Grealish in our squads?

We have performed another deep dive into the data to answer these important questions.

As this article uses large chunks from the Members Area, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can read it in full.

WHAT IS MCGINN’S FITNESS LATEST?

McGinn was last seen on the pitch in Gameweek 18, when he managed just seven minutes of the 3-1 home defeat to Southampton. He was taken off with an ankle injury, which an X-ray confirmed was a fracture.

That kept him out of Dean Smith’s considerations until early March when he returned to full training.

The Villa manager had planned to assess McGinn’s fitness ahead of the Gameweek 30 meeting with Chelsea, suggesting that the international break could be a good time to get him back up to full speed.

“John is back in full contact training with the players. It’s a boost for us and I’ll have to make a decision on whether he is ready to play a part against Chelsea. After the Chelsea game, we have the international break and also a break where we were supposed to be playing Newcastle as well. We will arrange a game for John to play and hopefully, we will see the best of him after the international break.” – Dean Smith, speaking on March 12

However, the coronavirus suspension for the Premier League put paid to McGinn’s chances of a March comeback.

Three months without competitive action will have helped clear up any lasting niggles from the injury for McGinn, but it has also robbed Smith of any chance to build up the player’s match fitness.

The international break he was hoping to use for that was also put on hold and such a long time without full squad training will have also been a stagnating factor in bringing McGinn back up to full speed.

While most of his colleagues last tested themselves in a Premier League match setting in March, McGinn has not done so since mid-December, roughly six months ago now.

Ahead of a Double Gameweek 30+, there are encouraging messages coming out of the Villa camp about McGinn though.

“He (John McGinn) looks back to his normal self. Everyone knows he’s like a little bulldog when he’s on the pitch and he’s certainly been like that in training. I can’t give him enough credit. I know everyone says he runs around and has legs, but he isn’t just about that, he has class about him as well. He’s one of those players you don’t appreciate until you play alongside him, and he’s like that in the changing room as well. Even the first day he came back into training he just gave everyone a lift because he’s such a popular figure in the dressing room, he always puts a smile on everyone’s face at the club.” – Jack Grealish

“Ginny is a great player and he has such an infectious personality that when he isn’t around the team, it does make a big difference. I think he is one of the players who, when they are on the team sheet, it affects the mindset of the opposition. He is certainly one of those players for us because he brings so much on and off the pitch. It will be good to have him back, for sure. We have got quality throughout the team but this period now has allowed players to come back and for teams to perhaps refresh their squad in terms of players that would have missed the season if it had finished on time. I think we are in a fortunate position in that we get John McGinn back. Teams around us will strengthen too.” – Tyrone Mings

Played the full 90 in the last 4 games and scored 3. I would guess so but as James is back they may put Azpillicueta on the left who knows. I’d say it’s worth the risk just make sure you have a half decent sub incase

Think a lot will depend on formation.

If they go to a back 4 then could be James and Azpilicueta in the full back spots.

He was such a good option pre-lockdown. If he starts he'll be great again potentially, but it's hard to say for sure.

      Chelsea fans might know better!

Only one man that knows and that is the manager. It is a punt that could pay off for the braver players or could be really annoying and a waste of funds for an important gameweek

For the people trying to convince themselves Sterling is going to start both games when Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, Sane, Foden and Jesus are all available, it's not going to happen.

He could absolutely score huge just saying those who think he's going to start both are a bit deluded imo.

Disagree. I think he'll start both. Sane is recently recovered from an ACL - I think it's more likely he plays 15 minutes the first match, 30 the second, than being thrown in from the start given the severity of the injury. Mahrez, Bilva are threats to his minutes, yes, but both prefer playing on the right to the left. Foden will play centrally (when he does play, probably). Jesus is more of a threat to Aguero than to Sterling, and is in my opinion more of a threat to Aguero's minutes than the rest are to Sterling's minutes combined (for the first two games).

      • 11 Years

      Foden isn’t competition for Sterling.
You would assume Jesus and Aguero will share minutes.
And Sane hasn’t played for months.

But you’re right, it would be silly to think any player, bar Ederson, is ‘likely’ to start two games in a row under Pep.

Foden played right wing a couple times before the season stopped and Jesus has played on the left. Not direct competition but they can be used there if Pep feels like it.

        1. HamezMace
          • 11 Years

I’d be amazed if he started Foden on the wing and benched Mahrez, Sterling, Sane and B.Silva to do so.

There is actually 5 days (Wednesday to Monday) between the City fixtures so there might be such extreme rotation as we’re expecting.

For me, none of Aguero, Sterling, KdB, Mahrez etc will play 180 mins, but all of them will play more than 90. So still worth getting them.

Agree with you but i think we will find a lot of players being taken off and not starting . Possible more the important ones . I would bet KDB is same. Especially if pool seal it straight away and City are out of Europe. Can't play with rotation fears imo i am captaining him 😉

I still think they will be careful with him. He is the main cog. Season is probably gunna be starting again in sept. Who knows but no city player is safe from pep rotation imo

As more template and boring, Sterling is far more template on here than Salah/Mane.

My guess would be Sterling and Mahrez starts vs Burnley and Sterling and B. Silva starts vs Arsenal.

Don’t expect Sane to start either, Jesus more likely to start as striker, Foden might or might not start one but even if he does, more likely to start in central midfield

Of course it’s impossible to know for sure, but Sterling is one of the most likely to start both out of City players.

If Salah is out injured (missed their last internal friendly with a knock) does that make Mane more or less appealing? I'm thinking he's more likely to be on the end of the chances if Salah isn't around.

And fwiw, I think Salah scores more goals than Mane for the run-in. He's only 3 goals (iirc) behind the leading scorer to win the golden boot for a third year running.

I would say B as I think 2 Villa players is 2 too many.

Im not planning on having any Villa players in my team. Personally I can’t see Villa scoring anymore than 1 goal over the 2 games. You need to think that you have 3 shef defenders too so you won’t actually want your Villa players to score.

He’s only started 2 games all season though, and that was back in November I think?

Saka has started the last 6 in a row.

Not someone I’d risk, especially at his price.

      yes - very strange! Heaton isnt fit, he wont be back fit before the end of the season, however there are other issues;
-Reina had a couple of howlers before the pause,
-Nyland was in very good form and pushing for the spot, and
-Steer is back from injury (who was our No.2 keeper behind Heaton before his injury)

      1. Kurupt FC

Yes this is my UT team. I've had another tinker and got Martial instead of Pulisic. I was punting for pulisic as an explosive differential but Martial is nailed on. Plus i cant afford to make to many changes down the line especially with no WC!
Yeah saka is bugging me. gone for him as a punt for dgw but your right long term no good. Can't afford jimenez with current setup. other options other than jota for 6.4??
honestly i can see villa leaking a lot of goals in dgw. Reina and their defence is dodgy! Potential minus points there.

Okay guys, decided to play BB GW30 and WC31 or 32. Have a lots of value tied up on Jimenez and, TAA and Bruno, so I think im going to keep them.

    First BB draft.

    Leno* - Ederson*
    Egan* - O'Connell* - Stevens* - TAA - Sais
    KdB* - Grealish* - McGinn* - Saka* - Bruno
    Kun* - Auba* - Jimenez
    0.5M ITB

11 DGW players without losing Bruno, Jimenez and TAA. Is that good enough? 3x City, 2* Villa, 3x Sheff U and 3x Ars.

    - Do we expect Saka to play both games?
    - Is McGinn and Grealish too much?

    1. Pep Roulette
      • 8 Years
