“Football is the most important of the least important things in life” – Arrigo Sacchi

On June 17, the Premier League will return with two postponed fixtures, Aston Villa v Sheffield United and Manchester City v Arsenal – let the countdown begin.

Firstly, it feels good to be writing again. It’s been a challenging few months, but with Project Restart gaining momentum day by day, the buzz is back. So, as focus turns to Fantasy Premier League (FPL), I thought I’d use this piece to discuss several players I’m targeting for the run-in and why I think they can make a difference. I’ll also touch upon their respective teams’ outlooks, along with chip strategy.

It makes sense to start in B6, with my club, Aston Villa.

The reality is we sit 19th in the table, with the worst defence in the division, having imploded before the break – let’s say I’m realistic about our chances of survival.

But there is a Double Gameweek, and if we’re looking for positives, we sit just two points behind both Watford (17th) and West Ham United (16th) with a game in hand.

We rank 12th for goals scored, and in Jack Grealish (£6.4m) and a fit-again John McGinn (£5.4m), we have a midfield double act who are a level above what most teams around us in the table possess.

We also only have to look to the Bundesliga and Hertha Berlin to see how a team can struggle pre-lockdown and then emerge as one of the form teams following the restart.

For the majority of the season, Dean Smith has used a 4-3-3 / 4-1-4-1 system, designed to try and get Grealish, our talisman, on the ball as often as possible. In an attacking sense, it’s largely worked – Grealish has scored more goals and created more chances than any of his teammates.

However, our over-reliance on one outlet has often come at a cost – we can sometimes be predictable in possession and lack creativity whenever Grealish isn’t at the top of his game. McGinn’s return to fitness should at least ease the burden on the captain’s shoulders.

This heatmap below illustrates where Villa have created their chances this season, and emphasises just how much we rely on Grealish down our left.

Gameweek 14 Scout Picks includes Spurs triple-up

Looking beyond the double, Son Heung-min (£9.7m) will be in my starting XI in Gameweek 31+ and is a serious captaincy candidate that week when Tottenham Hotspur host West Ham.

Despite missing seven Gameweeks through injury and suspension, the South Korean has racked up five double-digit hauls and 18 goal contributions already this season, and with an ownership of just 4.7%, I feel it’s too good an opportunity to pass up.

Arguably, no team has benefitted from the break more than Spurs, with the likes of Harry Kane (£10.8m) and Moussa Sissoko (£4.8m) now fit for selection, and with some big games to come against teams around them in the table, it’s all to play for.

Having used my Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 24, I’m currently leaning towards activating my Bench Boost chip in Gameweek 30+, with a Wildcard to follow in Gameweek 31+.

The Free Hit chip can then be used as and when it’s needed.

For those still struggling to decide which route to take, check out Zophar’s article, ‘What is the best FPL chip strategy for Double Gameweek 30+ and beyond?’, from earlier this week – it’s well worth a read.

At this stage, I’d usually post my team for the forthcoming Gameweek, but as I’m still debating several selections and the fact that things will no doubt change between now and deadline, there seems little point.

Instead, I’ll jump on the forum early next week and post my final squad, if there is enough interest.

Thanks for reading… until next time.

    Hey everyone,

Am i best to use unlimited transfers and BB or use FH? Team before transfers, 3.3m ITB. No WC

    Pope McCarthy
    TAA Stevens Doherty Taylor Fernandez
    Salah KDB Bruno Barnes Saka
    Rashford Jiminez DCL

    Leaning towards FH currently.

Actually a decent run in team. FH could work well if you fancy the double game week fixtures. Equally you could bring in a couple extra double players like Kun and one more Sheff defence and save FH for later, if you don't like the look of lots of double players

I’ve hit the gold here. BB this team

    Leno. Henderson.
    Boly. Laporte. TAA. Egan. Lascelles
    Mane. KDB. Pepe. Cantwell. Fleck.
    Auba. Samatta. Vardy.

    Delighted.

    Henderson, Button

    TAA, Stevens, Justin, Fernandez, Hanley

    Mane, Mahrez, KdB, Bowen, Cantwell

    Auba, Jimenez, McBurnie

0.3 ITB, a lot of risky differentials

I like your differentials (McBurnie, Bowen, Justin) and you have to take some gambles if you want to keep up with all the chips-teams. Only thing i'd consider is changing button, now you don't have a gk in 31+. Think you need to find some more change somewhere to upgrade him to a playing gk in 31.

Is it prudent to ignore all the old stats, seeing that nobody is in form or in a very high level of fitness, and just pick an FPL team with the best fixtures?

Well without any supporters in the stadiums the fixture-difficulty isn't as reliable as it was before either. You gotta go by something so i'd say pre-corona still weighs a bit. I'd expect Arsenal and Watford to improve relatively with their 'new managers' given some extra time. And i don't think the momentum of ManU, Sheffield Utd and Wolves is something to disregard.

You may very well be right! I managed to avoid Pepe the entire season, however, I am thinking of including him in my FH team for this week. Struggling to think of better Arsenal players

Bruno is a better option than Pepe this week, with Pogba and Rashford back, i Can see him getting an assist or 2, a big score

    4. Young Lingard

      6 years, 24 days ago

      The logic is there
But i would bank Pepe who (minimal 4 points “)
lets say 7 pts as from above
      Over Bruno in one game
Bruno versus a team that’s finished higher than united consistently over recent times is not certain to score at all.
I’m a united fan and I want to be wrong
Prices are very different and maybe even Saka outscores Pepe but the double is a safety net
Pepe playing twice Id fancy he at least match Bruno.

    A, B or C the better option for GW30+?

Hi guys, I am using the FH this week since I am quite happy with my usual team going forward. How is this FH team looking?

    Henderson
    Lascelles - O'Connell - Baldock
    Sterling - KDB - Pepe - Grealish - McGinn
    Aguero (C) - Auba

    3.9 - Martinelli - C. Taylor - Janmaat

Sheffield triple up in defence a bit too much?

  9. Mike82

Is 8 DGW players enough? I have no wildcard just a free hit but wanna bench boost and wanna decent team going forward to use my FH later on.
Or unlimited and load up then free hit next week then just manage it from there?

A good 8 yes, those of us with more than that are taking some puts on players and strategies we wouldn't normally be considering Villa defenders, players that weren't in form or nailed before the break, triple D's etc.

Seems like a good balance between BB and long term team. Weirdly enough you'll be hoping for zero Sheffield Utd CS with that team i suspect. All the other DGW opportunities you've got covered with Auba/Kun/KdB/Grealish/Fleck.

With spurs fixtures i'd be putting him in my team with no chips for sure. But with FH it's not only betting on him vs ManU, it's also betting on Ozil not doing anything in two matches for example. Long term Bergwijn > Ozil. For GW30, that's a big call.

Triple City attack is at the forefront of my thoughts - a one time only FH indulgence - and its the blue-chip premium triple too, rather than anything involving Mahrez, Jesus, Dilva etc

Well taken but if you watch the video Laca and M-Niles are totally at fault being robbed just outside the box. Hard on the defenders but it was bad defending as a team and Arteta will be fuming I suspect.

Yeah i certainly bad mistakes and city will score multiple as they do past everyone but don't think they'll attempt dribbles from there in real match

Yep. Personally it is all about the Burnley and Brighton games for these teams anyway. Anything first up is a bonus.

    Hi all

Looking further ahead at the fixtures, is anyone considering double 'Pool defence from GW33?

Got to be a decent option for rest of the season IMHO. I'd probably go with TAA and VVD.

An unknown as of now. Could see some rotation if they’ve won the league.

That's true, although I'd expect most of the rotation to involve the midfield/attack.

I would've thought VVD will play every game if fit.

      My thoughts exactly.
Once the league is won they will take their foot off the gas so the main source of points may be clean sheets rather than goals/assists.

Heard a rumour Liverpool were interested in Cantwell - ha. Probably just tabloid rubbish.

Pretty certain he'll leave for another club next season but can't see him at Pool.

Doubt he would move to pool as wouldn't get game time, would be good at any mid table team though. Like Burnley or Palace maybe.

Cantwell. That guy is so much foreward and good understanding with Pukki. His rotation was because of a needed rest i think. Duda might have nice underlying stats, but look at Buendia. You want points not underlying stats, Cantwell is great for the former.

Re VFPL, Villa look like they’re down already.

Bournemouth, West Ham and Newcastle should be fighting for their lives to avoid relegation.

Maybe time to invest in some of their players?

Bournemouth have some decent fixtures now.

    Potential BB team
    Leno, McCarthy
    ___, O’Connell, Egan, Lascelles, Hanley
    Sterling, KDB, Grealish, Traore, Fleck
    Auba, Aguero, Jimenez

Who is the best 4.8m defender to fill the last spot?

Another option would be to make Leno Into Ramsdale and have a 5.3m defender

6mill to spend of last MF spot, will be BB this GW.

    KDB - Bruno - Grealish - Cantwell - XXX

    A) 6mill Mf, who?
    B) Spend bit less on someone and upgrade Cantwell.

    Have trip SHU, trip City
Dont see many great options in this price range, sub 6mill.

I well aware that this question has been asked many a time on here this week.

Everyone with a TC, BB, WC & FH
What GW’s are you going to be using each chip please!

      BB30, WC31, FH38

Don’t have TC, but if I did I’d just punt on a premium player with a fixture against an ‘on the beach team’
