Can Aaron Ramsdale prosper in FPL and will he affect Sheffield United’s defence?

There will be a different goalkeeper between the posts for Sheffield United next season.

Dean Henderson (£5.5m) has returned to parent club Manchester United after two years with the Blades and Chris Wilder has moved quickly to replace the departing loanee, snapping up Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) from relegated Bournemouth.

In this Moving Target article, we’ll assess the new shot-stopper’s prospects in Fantasy Premier League ahead of the 2020/21 campaign and whether the changing of the guard will affect Sheffield United’s clean sheet potential.

Ramsdale returns to the club he represented as a youth and has signed a four-year deal with the South Yorkshire side, who reportedly paid around £18.5m to land the 22-year-old shot-stopper.

Upon sealing the deal for Ramsdale’s services, Wilder said:

The goalkeeping situation is something we have to make sure we get right.

This is not about Dean, it’s about bringing Aaron in, but Dean was outstanding for us for two years. We know a lot about Aaron, we’ve watched him develop on loan at Chesterfield and then AFC Wimbledon and obviously we’ve watched him this season too.

I’d like to thank the board for their backing given the situation. Aaron is certainly amongst the best young goalkeepers in this country and we are delighted to have him.

The new Sheffield United number one said himself:

I spoke to him [Wilder] after the fee was agreed and a couple of days later he just said, ‘are we getting it done?’

I knew him, all of his coaching staff and Darren Ward [United’s goalkeeping coach].

It’s a place I always come back to and see friends if I ever get time off over the weekend and family members are only about an hour and a half away, so I get to see them more regularly as well.

Knowing the place, the training ground and the people so well, it definitely feels like home.

The History

Born in May 1998 and still in the embryonic stage of his professional career, Ramsdale hadn’t had any playing experience in the top two tiers of English football before 2019/20.

He had originally joined Sheffield United from Bolton Wanderers in 2013, progressing through the Blades’ academy system and graduating to reserve goalkeeper ahead of the 2016/17 season.

It was, fittingly, Wilder who handed him his senior debut, with the-then teenage custodian making two starts in the opening rounds of the FA Cup in late-2016.

Although Ramsdale didn’t make a single league appearance for the Blades, Bournemouth had already seen enough and snapped up the young shot-stopper for £800,000 in January 2017.

Over two years were to pass before he played a single competitive game for the Cherries and, in between, he was sent out on loan to Chesterfield and Wimbledon.

Ramsdale made 39 league appearances across those two half-season loan spells and it was in the second of them, with the Dons in League One, that he really caught the eye, keeping seven clean sheets in 20 starts and winning their 2018/19 Young Player of the Year award despite only joining the club midway through the campaign.

Returning to the south coast and featuring prominently in pre-season under Eddie Howe, Ramsdale was given the nod between the posts in 2019/20 and went on to start all but one of Bournemouth’s 38 league fixtures.

He kept just five clean sheets (no team registered fewer shut-outs than the Cherries) and conceded on 62 occasions but, as we’ll soon discuss, that was as much a reflection on relegated Bournemouth’s overall defensive shortcomings as it was an indictment on Ramsdale.

Indeed, only a fortnight ago, fans of the Cherries voted their former goalkeeper as their Player of the Season.

He suits Inter's style of football. Didn't suit Man Utd's style of football.

His first touch was and still is horrendous. He was and still is a finisher.

He would have been good for Wolves, if they didn't have Jimenez. But think he would be crap for Man City given his inability to play in tight spaces.

    McCarthy

Wouldn’t say essential but there are a lot of positives in that he has good games, more points for goals than ever before due to the mid classification and the price point allows you to bring in KDB or Bruno when ready.

Ramsdale is the worst keeper in the league really. I know ddg had a bad year but Bournemouth would have survived with any half decent keeper

Yes and he makes howlers but he isnt consistently letting half arsed shots in. Pickfords errors look worse but he doesnt let anywhere near as many bad shots in as ramsdale

He wont be conceding as many as at Bournemouth for sure but hard to see shu keeping many clean sheets. Any team that gets a few shots on target will eventually score

            1. Tomerick
              • 9 Years
              3 years, 8 months ago

Well yes but the same could be true of any team, the more shots allowed the higher the chance of a goal. Sheffield should be allowing less chances. That said, he’s no Henderson and certainly not worth 5m. He probably represents the least value keeper in the league.

Agree. There were games against some of their relegation rivals where he was really poor. West Ham away, Watford away were two games I remember in particular.

I raise you Heaton, truly horrendous.

Last season after about 6 GW's I studied my mini league to see why I wasnt winning. Turns out the leader had Henderson and Lundstram double up. Me, I just had Ludnstram and Heaton, he was basically like 30 points in front just from picking Henderson over Heaton.

That week I changed to Henderson and soon caught him up. Heaton is absolute trash

Don't think Heaton is as bad as Ramsdale, but with Heaton (and Pope), noone really can tell. Burnley keep CS because of their system. If you take these GKs out of the system, can they handle it?

Martinez (Arsenal) impressed me. Liked that he would come out to claim crosses.

If he played for a semi decent side then @4.5 he wouldn't be a bad shot. I'm still not sure who I am getting ...... 5.5. for Pope seems a bit steep when there's no GW1. Might even go with Ryan is they keep White.

Maybe im being harsh and in older seasons he has done very well, but last season he was particularly awful in the time I had him (start of the season).
I cant see those points now, but 2 points was a haul

I watched their games, sure Villa are crap in defence, but he certainly did not help matters. I watched games where he literally just stood there and watched someone score

Ryan is probably who im going with, as I have KWP. McCarthy does beat him on pretty much every stat, but not by much. KWP is a decent 4.5 option given his fixtures, thats my logic.

If I had 5.5 to spend, would be Lloris in a heartbeat.

Yeah, McCarthy is the other stand out choice. Not sure where my defence will be but as I might start with 1 or even 2 benched Utd then my defenders must be nailed. KWP looks good for 4.5

I suppose you could reverse it and get Lamptey and McCarthy, thats an option. But I dont like Brightons fixtures so much, one of their defenders? I'm not sure so about.

Doubt it, they probably expect to get relegated.
Not many good keepers about tbh, even Spurs got Hart and he is what 3rd in line? If Villa showed somne interest surely Hart would've gone there, he will get barely any minutes at Spurs.

Thats probably a big fail on Villas half, not realising they could get Hart on a free

Friends, is there any single source where we can get:

    1. In which gameweek a new manager takes over? For eg. when did Ancelotti or Arteta took over the reins?
    2. When a manager changed the formation of a team? For eg. SOU changed their formation (if I rem correctly) after getting whopped by LEI last season.

To do it one by one is a task and I was hoping that the Members section would have this sort of info but I haven't been able to locate thus far.

    Appreciate any thoughts/suggestions. Thanks! 🙂

Haven’t checked desktop but it’s *properly* goosed on tablet & phone - you can’t even see the numbers side by side any more which was the sole purpose of the screen 🙁

I thought the plan was to improve it from a 7/10 that it was to a 10/10 by adding in FPL points (how we still don’t have this I don’t know) and allowing custom gameweek samples...

Instead it’s gone backwards to about a 3/10 basically unusable for me anyways 🙁

Yes that side by side view so much easier to compare. I really hope they go back to the old layout atleast. I've always wondered why FFS havent added FPL points. Sorting them by per start, per 90, away/home is very useful imo.

Real meaning: "Arsenal were willing to pay me, so how could I say 'no'?"

Also Willian: “I received an email from a nice member of the royal family in Nigeria. He had a fantastic proposal for me where all I had to do was give him my bank account details an PIN numbers and he will give me a handsome reward in 3 months - that was what I wanted to hear so I gave him all the information.

Hopefully this move will get me even more money than my move to Arsenal”

Evolving daily 🙂 Towards something like below:

          McCarthy
          TAA, Doherty, Vinagre, Mitchell
          Salah, Auba, Soucek
          Werner, Ings, Mitro
          (Nyland, Greenwood, Johnson Gordon, )
+0.5 ITB (For FT plan below)

          GW1: [Cap Salah LEE]
GW2: Salah > Bruno [Cap Bruno CPL or Auba FUL]
GW3: Auba > KDB [Cap KDB LEI]
GW4: Mitro > Jimmy [Cap KDB lee or Werner CPL]

Core is settled enough... but lots of changes around the edges to come though!

          What about yourself

Any reason for Mitch over Ferguson?

Thinking PVA injury might have him guaranteed early starts - could easily be Ferguson too

Wouldn’t say essential but there are a lot of positives in that he has good games, more points for goals than ever before due to the mid classification and the price point allows you to bring in KDB or Bruno when ready

Excluding price point reason, A or B? cheers

    What we saying?

    McCarthy
    TAA - Fergie - Doherty - Tierney - Lamptey
    ASM - Salah - Auba - Maddison/barnes
    Kane.

Button - Davies- greenwood - brewster

    What would you rather have?

    A) Auba (ful + WHU)
    B) Mane (LEE) + KDB (wol)

Aubameyang..... if price rises werent a thing. You may end up losing your opportunity to get KDB in thats the only issue

I don't think KDB will rise 0.5m in 8-10 days.

    How is this looking?

gw2 Mane/Salah, Maddison to Kdb, Greenwood

    Ramsdale
    Taa, Kwp, Vinagre, Saliba
    Salah, Mane, Ziyech, Auba, Maddison
    Mitrovic

    Nyland, Ferguson, Davis, Wickham

    Any advice please 🙂

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Vinagre, KWP
    Salah, Auba, Ziyech, Trossard
    Werner, Jimenez, Adams

    Auba to KDB at GW2/3
Potential Ziyech to Greenwood at some point

Like the Trossard pick, ended the season well. Not sure if Ramsdale is worth the .5 over others, would rather McCarthy and Egan (more goal threat) than him and KWP.

Trossard is another case of Pep roulette. Potter does not trust his players. Better options at that price IMO.

pretty decent. I'm currently making a new draft and only difference I have so far is Ryan for Ramsdale and Son for Ziyech

Like it. Maybe Trossard to Armstrong, upgrade one of Adams/Ramsdale?

    Start with Mitro or Doherty?

Doherty will outscore Mitro over a season.
