The best budget defensive rotation pairs for the new FPL season

Defensive rotations are the key to maximising the efficiency of cheaper Fantasy Premier League assets, especially this season.

Using the Fantasy Football Scout Season Ticker, we have picked out some of our favourite pairings of teams for those looking to make full use of their 15 players in 2020/21.

These include the pros and cons of each pairing, as well as other considerations that must be made before investing.

SHEFF UTD + SOUTHAMPTON

One of the most promising rotation pairings in terms of fixtures at the start of the season involves Sheffield United and Southampton.

As you can see from the Season Ticker above, the two clubs have paired home games and even their away trips look promising between Gameweeks 1 and 6.

Owning a defensive asset from each of these clubs would give Fantasy managers the following fixture list (if rotated appropriately): cry | avl | LEE | WBA | FUL | EVE

While only four of those fixtures are at home, the tougher match-ups cancel each other out in the first two away ones. During Project Restart, Crystal Palace (five) and Aston Villa (seven) were inside the bottom three for goals scored, only Norwich (one) finding the net fewer times.

Beyond that, it’s three matches in a row against newly-promoted sides, before Everton who, like Villa, only registered seven goals in Project Restart, come to Southampton in Gameweek 6.

Meanwhile, only five teams kept more clean sheets than the Blades and Saints (both three) during the last nine Gameweeks of 2019/20.

However, the question still remains: how does one invest in this rotation with effective budget options?

Sheffield United’s roster presents slightly more problems out of the two clubs, after their price hikes for 2020/21.

Pre-season may have raised the interest in Jack Robinson (£4.5m), who has featured heavily in all of Sheffield United’s friendlies thus far, while Jack O’Connell (£5.0m) has been absent.

The former £4.0m man has played 292 of a possible 315 minutes this summer, behind only Chris Basham (£5.0m) when it comes to most-used centre-backs.

Outside of Robinson, who is by no means a nailed-on long-term starter at Bramall Lane, Fantasy managers may have to put up a little more cash to have a reliable route here.

Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m), John Egan (£5.0m) as well as Basham and O’Connell are probably the ones to turn to.

Thankfully, the Southampton side of this equation is much simpler. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side can offer us a £4.5m goalkeeper in Alex McCarthy (£4.5m), as well as a similarly-priced full-back in Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m).

BURNLEY + LEICESTER

Price points are much less of an issue for anyone considering a defensive rotation of Burnley and Leicester assets.

Despite the recent arrival of Timothy Castagne (£5.5m), James Justin (£4.5m) looks likely to be involved in the early part of the campaign on either side of the Foxes’ defence, with Ricardo Pereira (£6.0m) and Christian Fuchs (£4.5m) out injured.

Meanwhile, Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) is on offer at Burnley and, with several shortages at centre-back during pre-season, Jimmy Dunne or Bobby Thomas (neither have an FPL price yet) could be involved.

The fixtures work out relatively nicely, but not quite as snugly as the Sheffield United+Southampton ones do.

Not game for Burnley in Blank Gameweek 1 is covered quite nicely by a trip to West Bromwich Albion for Leicester.

They then host the Clarets in Gameweek 2, but Sean Dyche’s men will face Southampton at Turf Moor the following week when Leicester must travel to Manchester City.

Gameweeks 4 and 5 offer some choice, with Newcastle (away) and West Ham (home) the first of those, before it’s West Brom (away) or Villa (home).

Then, the pairing runs into slightly more of an issue in Gameweek 6 when Burnley host Spurs at the same time as Leicester travel to Arsenal, although in this strange start to the season, many managers may have Wildcarded by that point anyway.

ASTON VILLA + CRYSTAL PALACE

Aston Villa and Crystal Palace balance some very nice home matches during the first six Gameweeks.

Dean Smith’s men don’t play during the opening round of action but the Eagles host Southampton that week.

Beyond that, investing in these two clubs could give a Fantasy manager the opportunity to defend against SHU | EVE | LIV | BHA | LEE.

The Liverpool game for Villa naturally looks a bit tricky, especially with a trip to Chelsea the alternative for Palace, although Smith has managed to improve his defence since Project Restart. Even though Villa lost 2-0 at Anfield, they held the Reds at bay for 71 minutes.

As for routes into the defences of either side, there are a plethora of choices, including some £4.0m options.

Following injuries to Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) and three different centre-backs, Tyrick Mitchell (£4.0m) has become a virtual ever-present at left-back for Palace during pre-season.

What impact has new formation had on Targett and Villa's defence?

At Villa, the ongoing fitness issues suffered by Tom Heaton (£4.5m), and current lack of new signings between the sticks, means that one of Ørjan Nyland (£4.0m) or Jed Steer (£4.0m) is likely to start the first few matches of 2020/21. Paying attention to Smith’s next press conference may hopefully tell us more in this department.

If uncertainty there, as well as an eventual return of Heaton, is enough to put off investors, there are plenty of £4.5m defenders at Villa Park.

Matty Cash (£5.0m) has probably cast enough doubt over Frédéric Guilbert (£4.5m) and Ahmed El Mohamady (£4.5m), but Matt Targett (£4.5m) remains the first-choice on the left-hand side of the defence.

As for Crystal Palace, Scott Dann (£4.5m) has been the most-used centre-back during pre-season outside of Cheikhou Kouyaté (£5.0m), who is filling in there from midfield.

Joel Ward (£4.5m) has also been extensively used at right-back during the pre-season (298 minutes from a possible 360), although how long-term a role he has remains to be seen when Nathan Ferguson (£4.0m) gets back from injury.

BRIGHTON + LEEDS

This combination of defenders is not quite as attractive as those mentioned above, but is still worth being aware of.

The home matches on offer between Brighton and Leeds are CHE | FUL | MUN | MCI | WOL | WBA. Hardly the best combination.

However, if rotated around the opponents rather than around the venue, Fantasy managers could set themselves up to defend against the following: CHE | FUL | shu | eve | cry | WBA – much more appealing.

That provides two opponents who scored seven goals or fewer during Project Restart, two newly-promoted clubs as well as Sheffield United, who averaged 0.9 goals per game in the final 10 matches of last season.

There are other risks associated with this rotation, of course, namely in the ability of the two defences to keep clean sheets.

During the Project Restart period, only Arsenal (15.69) and Norwich (17.47) recorded a higher expected goals conceded (xGC) score than Brighton, while Leeds arrive in the Premier League after a 16-year absence.

Perhaps, then, Mat Ryan (£4.5m) and Illan Meslier (£4.5m) might be the best bets here, as they can potentially rack up saves based on conceding a high volume of shots.

Considering Graham Potter’s propensity to rotate even in defence, the Seagulls’ goalkeeper becomes even more attractive. Lewis Dunk (£5.0m) is perhaps the only nailed-on defender and is probably too pricey to consider right now.

There is more certainty in Leeds’ back-four with Luke Ayling (£4.5m) and Liam Cooper (£4.5m) especially nailed-on to start at right-back and centre-back respectively.

To find defensive pairings of your own, make sure you use the Season Ticker in the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

As a frame of reference, around 2350 points should get you into the top 10k.
That means you need a playing return of 23.5 points per million (though in reality you need higher than this as ~20m will be on the bench). A couple of observations on this from last season:

    1. Goalkeepers have the highest p/m figure. Pope 30.9 came top and 9 goal keepers returned better than 23.5. This includes Ryan 135 points for Brighton at 4.5.
    2. Defenders – TAA came top 28/m and 10 other defenders had a return of 23.5 or better.
    3. Midfielders – Only Lundstram (who we’ll discount due to OOP) has a figure above 23.5. KDB 21.8, Westwood 21.5m Grealish 21.3. Salah has 19.4 for reference.
    4. Attackers – No forward is above 23.5. Ings 23.3, Jiminez 22.8 and Martial 22.2

What this screams to me is to invest in a strong defence and get the GK right. TAA plus a 4.5 defender will hit around 300 points (25p/m) which blows away Salah etc. Perma captain him though and his 466 points becomes 38.8 p/m.

It’s therefore of limited value squeezing in too many premium players unless you plan on giving them the armband as they don’t represent the best value. Two premiums to start at most (Aubameyang and Salah) for me.

A back 5 of Robertson, TAA, Tarkowski, Digne and Doherty costs 32m and returned 821 points (25.7 p/m). You could mix up the selection to add in other premiums and attempt the odd transfer for fixtures or form hope to improve on that 821 figure to get even better value.

It therefore makes more sense to pack the defence, pick and stick your key premiums and then not get too hung up over big names as Ayew at 6.0 (22p/m) can provide the same of better value than Vardy (21p/m).

Over a whole season, or even a run of fixtures. You will get better returns out of a flexible squad with good fixtures than squeezing 2 or 3 premiums and sitting on them.

Great post - bearing what you said in mind I have been on this draft for 2 weeks now (pressers permitting)

      Ramsdale
      VVD/Doherty/Enda Stev
      Salah/Auba/Jared Bowen/ASM/Armstrong
      Vardy/Ings

Fodder on the bench and enough in the bank to swap ings for Martial week 2 and bring in Sterling for Auba/Salah week 3.

Overall I like it. I'm waiting for any clues on chelsea team sheet as think they could go big v Brighton (6-0 territory) and lay down an early marker.

The more i've looked into value and p/m, the more convinced i am that investment in 4.5 or 5m defenders will more than pay for itself. Especially over midfielders. I'd be really tempted to downgrade ASM or Armstrong to get a 4th starting defender.

That is a great shout and something I have toyed with - I will probably downgrade Armstrong so as to not have 2 saints against Spurs in gw2 in case I decide to leave Ings and swap Vardy for Martial (for example).

Thanks for the input - hopefully I can beat last seasons 70K finish (not bad for first year!)

Note that the underlying assumption is that you hold the players the entire season. This rarely happens.

Interesting, care to share your team? I think it is the captaincy thing that impacts this, capping a defender is a rarity. Also if points per minute are similar, a high value player will bring more points

I wish i knew my team haha! I'm looking at 4 premium defenders, Salah, Aubameyang, Son, Ings and at least 1 chelsea asset as the core players.

Points per game can be misleading. A 12m player should be scoring twice as much as a 6m but if you look at points, 2 6m actually arn't that different. But it's hugely different in captaincy as you obviously want as many points in one player.

I say this every year, but this time i think i really will try and stick on 1 or 2 captaincy options. Then focus my effort on cheap bandwagons (promoted players) and who gets going in the 6.5-8m category.

Thanks for this post, interesting read. I tried 5 at the back once, but miserably failed. I got nervous with other mids and forwards scoring lots of points (which I couldnt get in), while all my defenders lacked to get any clean sheets for a couple of GW's. Will keep going 3-4-3 / 4-4-2.

Of course we dont own players all season, and have some only at certain moments when they get good fixtures or form. But that would get too complicated to take into account for this calculation obviously.

Curious what your team looks like atm?

It is a long term strategy as you can have stinker of weeks.

I actually started to look at trying to calculate rotating players to get a better p/m. For example the best 4.5 players can probably hit 100 points set and forget. If you rotated them out (benching or transfer) for hard games you might be able to pick up another 5-6 clean sheets and boost the output by 20-30 points.

We do have limited transfers though and hits for cheap defenders just doesn't make sense. With perfect hindsight / luck you can do really well with rotating but i think you're more likely to get better points on premium set and forget for extended fixutres (e.g. Everton and Digne up to week 10 for example).

Then can focus transfers and rotation on form midfielders and attackers.

What you say is completely valid for a set and forget ghost team but you also need to take into account

Form & Fixtures - players are streaky and over a small block of fixtures can get way more than those numbers
Team value - optimising points per million spent is one thing, but you can also build the millions part as well.
Bench - 7m def & 4.5 mid is only 1 first team player whereas a 4.5m def & 7m mid is 2. the difference shows up elsewhere in the squad.

As a point of reference my ghost teams (which go heavy at the back) usually finish about 1mln OR, whereas my real team is 100k or better generally.

I'm very on board with what you're saying. My general point is defenders are worth investing in and non playing defenders on the bench is a massive waste. Two 4.5 well rotated defenders should be able to outscore similar value elsewhere in the team by a sizeable factor.

Looking at my past seasons i often end up with really inconsistent game weeks. Top 100k score then a 3m score and i spend too much time trying to chase form and overthinking things. By GW 3 i'll probably only have KDB or Sterling as permanent (c) and being looking to spread the premium funds on a bunch of 7.5-9m players.

My aim being to just try and keep hitting consistent ok scores and see where i'm sat at Christmas. (Usually i'm ~1m and chasing second half to get top 100k).

Appreciate your insights. I hear what you're saying but does this assume that you hold the players for the whole season? When you own a player has to come into too. You grab players when they show form, fixtures and are delivering points then generally offload when they aren't.

      1. TomSaints

You're totally right and i gave the 5 premium defenders and 821 total just as an example.

If i commit 32m to defence (looking for a bargain 4.5 who hits form to reduce that down of course) and probably keep TAA all season. Then i can rotate the premiums in for nice patches of form / fixture but do it on at least 5-10 game stretches.

Laporte, Doherty, Digne, Pereira to name but a few could all come in and i'd hope to get a bit above that 821 figure.

The overall point i suppose is that we have limited free transfers and defence actually offers the best value for set and forget players. I can then focus my transfers on chasing hot strikers when on form.

It probably puts a bit of a ceiling on an individual gameweek score. But if you hit 60 points regularly you're going to have a good season!

I’m of a similar mind, at least to start the season. Worked terrifically well a number of years back personally before the best mids and forwards presented themselves

          My defender pool is

          TAA - VVD - Robbo - Doherty - Egan - Saiss - KWP - Dallas - Ayling

Wish I'd stuck with it though, as long term they got the big points.

Limited minutes. Behind Origi. I'd go for a low ownership 4.5m striker to protect from losing value and one that doesn't burn a valuable Pool slot.

Leicester look to be in a bit of a decline, or at least a slump. Lots of players out injured. Some sold, some left. Not much activity in the market. Over reliant on Maddison. Vardy isnt' getting any younger either - those minutes are going to wane, eventually + there are some nice shiney new options out there...

Leicester have been underwhelming. Pre-season isn't everything but they've been average for longer than that.

Sadly this is true. I'm not expecting us to pull up any trees this season. Vardy is still a very good player, but there is a lack of creativity around him - especially with the sales and injuries.

Been set on my forward line for weeks. Calum Wilson at 6.5 puts a spanner in the works!

I'd save 2.0 swapping out either Ings or Jiminez, but who goes out of those 2?

With the additoon of Wilson, You can actually have a decent cheap forward line and invest the money elsewhere.

    Mitrovic Antonio Wilson

Rather Che adams than Antonio. Don't like either tho. I think Mitro + Wilson and 9-10.5m player is best. Kun/Werner/Kane/Vardy etc

        Werner and Wilson imo

But Ings loves bonus. Essential for a forward and Havertz and/or Pulisic could be better than Werner

Probably improve him tbh - particularly Wilson.
Not sold on Fraser. Was incredible 2 seasons ago but delivered very little last year.

    2. @persecuted_by_mods
        3 years, 7 months ago

For the better, Fraser means more space for ASM and Wilson is a better player than Joelinton in almost every single way

        Hopefully in a positive way.

Goals were hard to come by for Newcastle. These 2 are a good proven combo. ASM is class.

I doubt Fraser will oust ASM from the right wing. They'll accommodate both in,a tweaked formation.

Why do so many people have Mitrovic in their teams? I understand he's cheap but first 2 fixtures don't look great, and Fullham are a newly promoted team. Doesn't it make more sense to have DCL or Ings and downgrade in the future if he does perform? Or to play 352?

      McCarthy/Nyland
      TAA/AWB/Davies/Egan/Mitchell
      Auba/Salah/Dele/Saka/Bissouma
      Werner/Ings/Brewster

Means playing 442 since GW2 with AWB.

The question that is really bugging me is whether these new signings will start the first fixture?

Allan, Doucoure, Rodriguez instantly make Everton better but without much training with the team will Ancelotti give them a week or two to settle in?

      Wilson + Fraser the same.

      Justin/Thomas with Castagne

      Havertz, Thiago Silva etc.

What are people’s thoughts on this?
