Salah tests positive for coronavirus – Egyptian FA

Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) has tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Egypt.

The Egyptian Football Association announced on Friday that the Liverpool midfielder returned a positive test ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Togo but is asymptomatic.

The (translated) statement read:

The medical swab conducted on the mission of our first national football team showed that our international player, Mohamed Salah, the star of Liverpool, was infected with the coronavirus after his test came out positive – although he does not suffer from any symptoms.

[He] was subject to the medical protocol after the coordination of the national team doctor, Dr Muhammad Abu Al-Ola, with his English club, Liverpool, in addition to isolating him in his room and also isolating all contacts.

In a later announcement, Egypt confirmed that a second test backed up the findings of the first:

At the time of writing, Liverpool have yet to confirm the news.

Barring any further developments, Salah will now have to undergo a period of self-isolation and will very likely be unavailable for the Gameweek 9 visit of Leicester City.

The Reds are already injury-ravaged heading into that fixture, with Joe Gomez (£5.4m) joining Virgil van Dijk (£6.3m) on the sidelines and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) also a major doubt with a calf problem.

Sadio Mane (£12.0m) of course tested positive for coronavirus last month, returning to training at Melwood after a 10-day period of self-isolation and featuring for the Reds in the Merseyside derby, 15 days after his initial diagnosis.

Salah could feasibly return in Gameweek 10, then, if a similar timeframe of recovery, isolation and return to training pans out – although there is also the small matter of a flight back to England in between.

We have already seen West Bromwich Albion’s Callum Robinson (£5.5m) withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad after returning a positive test of his own.

Wolves’ Conor Coady (£5.0m) is also self-isolating after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Earlier on Friday, Ireland revealed that Alan Browne had returned a positive coronavirus test after playing against England – although the Football Association of Ireland added that “no close contacts of the player” had been identified.

They mention Jo Hyun Woo and Hwang In bom (key players in the Korean squad) "as well as 3 others" on the Korean news websites so my guess is it's not Son, "the three others" implies they are names the public aren't familiar with.

Don't quote me on this though, my Korean is pretty shaky 🙂

Not really sure tbh. Was trying to find an excuse to sell Salah, now that I have one, I'm actually reluctant 😀

Considering 2 option as of now. If benching Salah, then Brewster to Bamford. Otherwise, Salah to Bruno and add Vardy/Kevin/Cancelo in upcoming weeks.

If I do get rid of Salah, then I wouldn't bother to get him back anytime soon, that's why I'm not sure at the moment.

With the number of injuries in Liverpool's first 11 and no other obvious captaincy choice this week aside from Bruno i feel like I'm being nudged towards bringing in the Utd man. Wol and bha (considering how much better they have been defensively) are not fixtures that scare me to go without Mo so I can bring in the City boys gw10 & 11 and then get him back for ful gw12, and probably for the 12.3 I'll sell him for.

      1. abhirup780
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

Salah has a 50-50 chance of being back by gw10. If he gets tested negative after 4-5 days and joins Liverpool by the next 7-10 days. By that time his isolation period of 10 days (acc to uk gov rules) starting from the day of last positive test should be over. Mane started training after 10 days of being positive.
But if he develops symptoms or the repeat test after 5 days come positive the scenario changes. He won't be able to leave the country unless he is free from symptoms or tested negative. The difference with Mane is that Salah is in Egypt, so their rules apply now regarding the timing of the next covid test.

Put in Mane as a placeholder, you'll probs have KDB anyway so just keep 1 mill in the bank incase you want to take him out for the pool double up

        • 14 Years

I was planning on Salah, Fernandes and Kane as my pricey options. KDB makes sense but there's also a case to be made for Sterling, Ziyech, Son, Rashford and even Aubameyang could be a tasty differential since it's only for a couple of gameweeks anyway.

I would definitely have Mane and maybe even Jota but as you say Auba could be a nice differential but he's got mixed fixtures good holder for Salah though for next week with them playing Leeds

Jota was one of the first in on my WC... he'll be a £9m+ player next season.

He doesn’t fit into that team unless Klopp plays 4231 every week, which he won’t

I was thinking about Sterling and KDB double up for next couple of fixtures. Then decide whom to keep long term and get Salah for the other one.

City haven't looked good enough to me to justify putting £23m of my budget in there

Yep that seems the logical way to go unless you use Mane as a placeholder

Just reading back through the posts on this article and i have come to the conclusion that one of the biggest casualty's of that virus is peoples sanity and common sense.

Some people calling for Salah to be punished for attending a family weeding need to get a life.
It's not a crime to contract the virus and millions of people all over the world have been unlucky enough to get it and avoid the vitriol aimed towards Mo.

On a positive note for Salah he is a young fit man and there is very little chance it will affect him that much.
Chances are he will miss one club game at the most and shouldn't have to worry about catching the dam thing at a more crucial period for his club.

As a professional it was completely irresponsible of him to do what he did. Players need to take some responsibility of the consequences that may arise if there are more outbreaks which could force the league to be suspended again...

As a human being attending your brothers weeding supersedes your professional life though?

Like does anyone know Salah even caught the bug at that weeding in the first place?

I am sure Salah was doing his best to act responsibly under the circumstances but like so many before him just got unlucky. Not much of a chance of him affecting the PL him being way down in Egypt tbf.

That's family "wedding", not "weeding" which has entirely different connotations when discussing the virus.
          I agree family comes first.

What kind of example is he setting for millions of young fans across the world when his actions go against what governments and scientists across the world have recommended?

      You are absolutely clueless

I need to leave 0.2 in the bank to get Salah back later if lose him now, which of these moves would you do?(on WC)

    A) Lamptey to KWP/Dallas/Holding (rotation with Coufal)
    B) Martinez to McCarthy
    C) Brewster to Davis
    D) Coufal to Kilman

If I do Lamptey to Targett in A then I would also have to Watkins to Bamford else I would have 4 Villa players
