Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope: Which FPL players are nearing a one-match ban?

Those who keep an eye on the Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for several Premier League players.

The respite provided by the final international break of 2020 seems like a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

The yellow card amnesty is not until after the completion of a team’s 19 league fixtures (more on that later), after which the threshold moves up from five to ten bookings.

Those Fantasy Premier League assets already sitting on three and especially four cautions still have a long way to go before they are in the clear, then.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

There is only one player who is currently a solitary yellow card away from suspension: Leicester City’s Jonny Evans (£5.5m).

The Northern Ireland international has managed to rack up four cautions in just five league appearances this season, the latest of which came in Gameweek 8.

With Caglar Soyuncu (£5.3m) a longer-term absentee and news awaited on the severity of Wesley Fofana’s (£5.0m) knee injury, the Foxes can’t afford to lose many more bodies at the heart of their defence.

Evans’ four bookings have come from just six fouls conceded, at least, so the experienced stopper is hardly flirting with danger on a regular basis.

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

While Evans is out in front on his own on four bookings, there is a baker’s dozen of Premier League players who are just a caution behind.

Most are lower-owned FPL assets and/or agricultural midfield types but there are a handful of semi-popular options within the list.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) boasts a double-digit ownership, while Hector Bellerin (£5.1m) was among the top five most-bought defenders of Gameweek 8.

Those two players sit in 19.7% and 16.4% of the top 10,000 squads respectively.

John McGinn (£5.5m) saw his ownership increase sixfold after his early-season heroics, while Mateusz Klich‘s (£5.6m) own purple patch of form and penalty-taking responsibilities have seen him become the fifth most-popular budget midfield option under £6.0m.

Of the 14 players on three or four yellow cards, Klich has committed the most fouls. Indeed, only two top-flight players have fouled the opposition on more occasions than the Pole (19).

There are no surprises to see Oriel Romeu (£4.5m) on the above table: the Southampton midfield spoiler and emergency bench fodder option has racked up over ten times as many yellow cards as he has FPL attacking returns in his Premier League career.

John Lundstram‘s (£5.1m) name appearing on the list would have been headline news in 2019/20 but given his recategorization as an FPL midfielder, uncertain future at Bramall Lane and plummeting ownership, he is but a mere footnote this season.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

As we mentioned in the introduction, the yellow card threshold is raised to ten after 19 league fixtures.

In most seasons, that would ordinarily mean after the completion of Gameweek 19 – but this is no ordinary campaign.

Aston Villa, Burnley, Manchester City and Manchester United are a game behind the other 16 top-flight clubs, with word awaited on the rearrangement of their respective Blank Gameweek 1 fixtures.

We have also yet to see how a complicated-looking January schedule pans out, with the ‘Matchweek 18’ games split into two and sandwiching Gameweek 19.

And any unexpected postponements between now and then would, of course, further affect the ’19th fixture’ cut-off point.

The threshold for ten yellow cards is after 32 league matches, which will be mid-April at the earliest.

Players collecting ten bookings before that point will serve a two-game ban.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

Anyone knows what’s going on with Son? Standard says he’s quarantining in his hotel room

    https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-news-heung-min-son-coronavirus-covid-19-south-korea-quarantine-self-isolate-b70257.html%3famp

But report from Mexico Korea match says he assisted the Korean goal (and he’s not flagged)?

The standard report was 7 hours ago when it was true that he was quarantining because he was waiting on a 2nd negative test. Everything is fine now.

WC re-draft. This time keeping Kane, replacing Salah.

    McCarthy, Forster
    -----, Cancelo, KWP, Justin, -----
    Mane, KDB, Grealish, Soucek, -----
    Kane, DCL, Watkins

    1) Zouma, Struijk, Ziyech
    2) Chilwell, Lamptey, Barkley

I’d go 1. Ziyech seems key and Zouma has goal threat. And Lamptey gives 5 good defenders

    Chilwell - Justin - Lamptey - Targett - Coufal.

    Decent cover?
I play 3 at the back so the remaining 2 would be bench cover for the particular gameweek.

    A) Coufal
    Grealish (JWP, Bissouma)
    Martial

    B) Lamptey

    Watkins

Will have to play 4 regularly!

Hi all. Salah problem ruining my plan.
    McCarthy 4.0
    Robbo, James, KWP, Konsa, Coufal
    Salah, Son,Ziyech, Zaha, Soucek
Kane, DCL, Watkins 0.6itb 1FT all chips left
Plan was : this week Fernandes, Cancelo for Son Robbo
Next week KDB Vardy for Fernandez Kane
    Not sure whether to
    A) ignore Salah illness and leave on bench. Continue plan
    B) just Salah to Fernandez
    C) Salah, Son to Fernandez KDB for -4
    D) Wildcard next week

Just adds to the challenge, everyone navigating the same issues so I guess we need to try and adapt, be cautious and leave transfers until the last minute.

That is one possibility. I have tried different approach, which hasn't worked for me so far, but hasn't been the real cause for my problems this season. Early transfers to get tv and having decent bench for this kind of situations.

I haven't gone to below 4.5 defenders since Wolves fixtures are going to be sour soon, even though Kilman was very good option earlier. My current bench is Targett, Lamptey and Brewster. Therefore benching Salah is not huge issue for me. People sometimes look at the short term money too much. Salah out and Salah in costs two transfers, which is too much if he isn't out for three weeks.

need to adapt - hold off on early transfers (especially over the IB) and wait until the deadline, be patient with players and have real options on your bench ... you really can’t be wild carding one week, taking hits the next and then free hitting the week later because of rash early hits again

I am worried too about how big government has taken away peoples civil liberty's without a shot being fired and the mass censorship of anyone that dares to ask questions about it.

The doctor of Egypt's national team, Dr Mohamed Abou El Ela:

"He has to self-isolate in Egypt until his test returns negative and then, of course, he can travel back."

Could be a while before his tests even turn negative... then UK protocols for quarantine set in once he's back...

Tbh I have some doubts about these rules. I don't know for certain, but there could be a possibility to bend these rules. Perhaps Liverpool can send some people over there and arrange him safely to the airport and there are private jets that can fly him as "resque flight" to UK?

Would you suggest Salah to Kdb or Bruno at least for the next 2 then I’d worry about getting Salah back when needed. Makes sense to move Salah first over Son
Im not sure I would captain Kdb vs Spurs though
Tempted by Robbo to Chilwell as well to have an extra 1m

                I’m doing Salah > Bruno
Depending on Sons next performance he will become KDB or Sterling

                  Figured I’d get mixed responses.
Agree it makes sense to wait a week on city. Also feel like some big names could be rested straight after IB, who knows
Plan is Salah to Bruno and roll a transfer for 2 next week. Maybe we have some Antonio news by then

Sounds good, I already have DCL, Bamford & Kane.
Antonio’s run is amazing but he’s not 100% fit

Team linked. I’ve got DCL Jimenez Kane which one or two might go
At least Robbo to Chilwell could help fund Salah back so have options

On a wildcard: DCL or Richarlison? And why?

DCL, but only just; simply because of the standard doubt of any player's form coming back from 3 games out

what do we expect from Leeds vs Arsenal?

                Bench One?

                (A) Barkley
                (B) Bamford

Bamford seems dangerous to bench, plus he’s resting and probably safe from travel related COVID.

Maybe the smart move with pandemic and FPL is to wait until the deadline and see the total field of damages

The results we see so far are probably test to enter particular countries.

All the internationals gotta test to enter the UK and resume training. We really won’t have the full count until 72 or 48 hours before deadline

It sucks that Bruno could be +1 and Salah -1 in that time. That’s a loss.

Just done Salah > Bruno, no way I am benching 12.4m for a week or two, will be dropping like stone soon.

I have made earlier Son to Bruno for a hit (Saiss to Targett) and not so happy about it. Last season I didn't get punished for early transfers at all, but this season can be different. Ditching Salah for -4 just to avoid that price drop is tempting, but I guess I can't justify it. For example getting Grealish in to bench Targett for -4 doesn't sound like it's worth it.

That is pretty much how i am approaching fpl this season.

Just be prepared to take a hit in terms of team value because not jumping on bandwagons early will leave you behind in that respect.

And even though Salah will drop .1 people may rush to get him back so that drop is perhaps not very significant.

                Depends on the situation.

I used my 2 FTs last weekend to get Cancelo and Grealish for Podence and TAA and regardless of injuries, I'm happy with the move as it was something I was planning on anyway and I'll have no FTs to make these transfers over the last 4 GWs.

I have 2 bench players to cover for Salah and another injury/COVID situation if needed and I don't mind taking hits if needed to rectify anything further than that.

Only risk if the players I bring in get injured or COVID but the % chance of that happening to any specific player isn't worth waiting and losing 0.3 or 0.4 for me.

People selling him now will be scrambling to buy him at 12.6m/12.7m when Fpl towers give him a rapid fast double/triple
rise when he is back in a week.

Should I do Salah --> Bruno now with 1FT or wait until internationals are over and for press conferences??

Think Bruno could go up 0.1 tonight and maybe another 0.1 before the deadline. Likewise Salah will probably go down by 0.1 by the deadline.

Had Salah from the start, do I lose 0.1 if he drops? Selling price for me is 12.2

So selling price would still be 12.2? Hm, not sure what to do. If Bruno double rises then I break even if I want to swap back. If Salah is ruled out then no need to worry, though I don't think I want Bruno too much
