My favourite teams to target for upcoming FPL Blank and Double Gameweeks

Fantasy Premier League managers can finally start pinpointing which teams to target for the Blank and Double Gameweeks.

That’s what I have spent the last day or so doing as we head into the busiest period of the football calendar.

The first thought that comes to me while looking at the fixtures is that the teams involved in Double Gameweek 19 will have plenty of motivation to play their best players and not rotate.

In recent years, the biggest Double of the campaign has come when a lot more places in the Premier League table were secure, reducing the importance of each game.

By contrast, very little will be settled come early January and we can surely expect fewer dead rubber games – which is great news for Fantasy managers.

And, handily enough, some of the popular teams with two fixtures in Double Gameweek 19 don’t have a particularly condensed schedule before and afterwards.

Teams with the best Blank and Double Gameweek fixtures

For example, Liverpool play a Premier League game on January 4 before an FA Cup third round tie against Aston Villa on January 8, which they will surely use to rest key players or manage their minutes.

That precedes a lengthy for Liverpool, their next Premier League games coming in that Double Gameweek on a Sunday, January 17 and Thursday, January 21.

After that, the Reds have another FA Cup tie (if they go through) before their next league game on January 28.

You have to assume that, because of the cup ties and reasonable rest times between league outings, Liverpool rotation will be at a minimum for the games that matter to Fantasy managers.

Thankfully, Jurgen Klopp’s men have good fixtures in and around the Double Gameweek too. In fact, the Reds are second on the Season Ticker from now until Gameweek 17, so it looks like a good time to invest in key Liverpool assets if you are planning to Free Hit in Blank Gameweek 18 and build a team for Double Gameweek 19 without a Wildcard.

Manchester United are in a similar category as Liverpool for me with decent Double Gameweek 19 fixtures on paper as well as an appealing schedule either side.

West Ham and Leeds also have really favourable fixtures in the bumper Gameweek.

Not only do they have a decent schedule before and after, these are two clubs that can offer decent budget options if you are looking to plan for a Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 19.

Both teams are fixture-less in Blank Gameweek 18 so if you do want to get Hammers and Whites in your team, you may be lighter that week and increase the need for a Free Hit chip.

What if I don’t want to use my Wildcard?

Kane and Son deliver again as Spurs prepare for appealing fixture swing

If you are hoping to navigate Double Gameweek 19 team without using a Wildcard, the teams we have already mentioned remain good sources for transfers but we should also consider Chelsea, Leicester and Southampton.

That said, those three clubs have mixed schedules before then, although they improve from Gameweek 20 onwards, so timing could be very important when transferring their players in.

When we are planning for the Blank and Double Gameweeks, we always have to make sure we do check the fixtures before and after so we don’t succumb to tunnel vision and fall into some traps.

It is worth noting Spurs have a good run of fixtures right until Double Gameweek 19 and do not blank in Blank Gameweek 18 either.

If you currently own five or so players from Manchester City, Spurs, Aston Villa and Everton, which is very likely given the template and some popular picks, I think you can get away with saving the Free Hit in Blank Gameweek 18 and using it in when the FA Cup quarter-finals cause problems or for a Double Gameweek.

General tips for Blank and Double Gameweeks

Finally, here are some of my golden rules for planning to cope with Blank and Double Gameweeks.

  1. Don’t have a tunnel vision when choosing Double Gameweek players. Don’t just think about those who are playing twice – always look for those with appealing single Gameweek matches too.
  2. If you can field a decent Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 19 (which is possible with good bench fodder from Southampton, West Ham and Leeds United), use the chip. I have found that if you are building a team with your second Wildcard, it is much more effective when you don’t have to focus on the bench and can pump more into a strong set of 12 to 13 starting players.
  3. Don’t forget to get points now. More often than not, while we are focused on getting good players who play two games in the Double Gameweek, we tend to forget teams that have good fixtures right now. There are still five Gameweeks to be played before Double Gameweek 19 and while you make your transfers, make sure they have a good points potential for now as well. A good example of this from last year was when everyone was focusing on Liverpool players with a Double Gameweek. But, at that point, Manchester City were away at Aston Villa, which was a very appealing fixture at the time. I deviated from the Double Gameweek bandwagon and focused my transfer on getting points immediately: signing Sergio Aguero (£10.3m) and captaining his hat-trick.

That’s it from me at the moment. At the moment, this article is merely me loud-thinking while I glance at the fixture schedule first up. I need to delve further before I strengthen my plans for these Gameweeks.

I am expecting some old school ‘pen and paper’ transfer planning as I move ahead. I suggest you do the same. These scribbles always help. Good luck and see you next week.

What would be the best strategy here?
    Mendy(Forster)
    Chilwell Cancelo Lamptey (Coufal)(Neco)
    Salah KDB(C) Bruno Grealish(Riedewald)
    Bamford DCL Watkins

    1.5 itb, 1ft

I already have 7 for GW18(Although 3 of them are Riedewald, Cancelo,Lamptey) is FH18 still worth it for me?

With my FT, I'm think Cancelo to Dias/Dier?

Cancelo is in a 3 way rotation with mendy and walker. I wouldn't swap him with City's fixtures and the fact they play in gameweek 18.

using the FH in 18 or 19 is most people's strategy. I'd advise using transfers from now to then to get as close to an XI out for gameweek 18 then FH for 19 and get pure double gameweek guys in.

You have a really strong nice looking balanced team. No Spurs assets could become an issue after gameweek 16 when their fixtures look great but is okay for now imo.

Looks like you have a strong team for this upcoming gameweek so could just save the FT?

I could, it's just that Cancelo's rotation even once in a while can cause problems, like what if in GW18 he gets rotated... with Dias there is that security.

If Cancelo doesn't play this week then I have Coufal off the bench and if someone else doesn't play, I field 10 men.

Maybe I could Neco to Lewis/Taylor?

Taylor > Lewis. Cancelo has started 7/8 and i reckon will start at LB on the weekend but there's no guarantee admittedly. Walker likely will start at RB but you never know with Pep.

The only other player from there I can see potentially not starting would be Lamptey? So I'd wait to hear injury news otherwise I wouldn't waste a transfer getting rid of a guy who's starting 80+% of city's games and bringing in points

I'd go Neco to arsenal defender. holding looks quite safe atm but someone like Bellerin has better attacking return potential. they play gameweek 18 too

Is it madness to still consider Lloris at 5.6?
TedTalksFPL talked about how Spurs concede a lot of small chances and very less big chances, I'm 100% sure he's the best GK in the game this season but it just doesn't feel right to pay so much for a GK, I do think it could be worth it though...

With so much cash required for attack, I wouldnt feel comfortable with a 5.6 GK. You can go for Dier instead, easy to fit in defense.

I would say that the way spurs is playing and how good they are defensively due to their constant CA play. He is worth it. Im trying to get him in myself and would say his price tag is worth the high CS chance which they have now

    Here’s my gw 19 plan,

    Out (6FTs)
    Lamptey > Dallas
    Lewis > Coufal
    Brewster > Adams / Haller
    Forster > meisler
    Grealish > Soucek
    James > KWP

    FHGW18 / BBGW19
    Gw19 team
    Martinez, meilser*
    Chilwell*, KWP* Taylor*, Coufal*, Dallas*,
    Salah*, kdb, bruno*, son, soucek*
    DCL, bamford*, Adams*

Is that gw19 team worthy of a bench boost?

What is your plan for the Big DGW?
    I'm thinking of the following:

    FH 18
BB 19 (slowly getting DGW players without using the WC)
Then WC afterwards in 20 to clean up the mess?
The next DGW is small and TC then?

I don't have my WC so FH18 and TC19 for me. I prefer to use my BB with a WC and have a shot at getting 28 players out. Between now and GW19 I can only put 12 doublers out at best so I'll save BB for later in the season.

But Lateriser does make a great point about using the 2nd WC BB is not so great as you're stuck with a lot of money on your bench for a few weeks.

Just using FTs between now and GW19 I can get this TC team:

    McCarthy
    Chillwell James Robbo Coufal
Salah (TC) Mane Bruno Soucek Grealish (or benched and Antonio if fit)
    Bamford

    4.0 DCL Watkins/Antonio 3.8

I know it's probably not the ideal 11 but they all have a double (if Antonio is fit) and more importantly I can retain my team structure & they mostly have decent fixtures in the weeks that follow (I'll swap Mane back to KDB the following week). As a bonus i'll only lose about 0.5 or less of TV. FH GW18 of course.

Still a long way to go of course, but what do you think?

Anyone on the FH Gw19 ship? Probably gonna build a team for 18 with 6 FT'S.
The only problem is the fixtures in GW18 are pretty dud... So you could be getting in dross players that could remain in your team for GW 20 and beyond.

My planned GW20 team after FH in 19

    Areola
    Diaz PVA James Lamptey 3.9
    KDB Sterling Bruno Podence/Saka 4.3
    Kane Wilson Bamford

Sterling will make way somehow for Salah in week 22/23 and i will have the Trinity back soon.

That team isn't dud for GW20 and beyond is it?

    1. GreennRed
      • 12 Years

Thinking now to add a few doublers and FH for GW18. Gonna be too restrictive to try and get 11ish for GW18 and be left with a poor team in GW20. Don't wanna use my WC too early. Half a season to go after that.

There are a few differentials in GW19(FH) that i do not want on WC beyond GW20.
For eg Ings Antonio Double Pool defence, Triple West ham . The upside is much higher i feel for a Gw19 FH... But only if You can get a good enough team for GW20 and beyond and have 10/11 playing GW18.

Depends a bit on current team and their GW18ness. I have only 5 players and no keeper. I had half a plan to get 8 or 9 starters for GW18 by pulling in a few players between now and then. But I think it'd leaving me giving points away before GW18. No chip plan for GW18 might give me some TC choice too but prob not.

What do you think of these moves to get Son in. Have 2FT and 0.4itb.

DCL Soucek Dias => Brewster Son Lewis

    to give me

    Martinez – (Button)
    James – Targett – C Taylor – (Lamptey) (Lewis)
    Salah – Bruno – KdB – Grealish - Son
    Bamford - Wilson - (Brewster)

    Anyone better than Brewster?

No. DCL in mighty form, lovely price. Soucek in good form, good price. Dias, less so but you can't have every big player and I think those 3 for 3 isn't needed, affects nice balance that you have. On current form sell Dé Bruyne for Son if you need to.

Not the worst move but you kept DCL through his 2 tough games. Fixtures look good now apart from the City one which is better than it looks imo.

Considering the GW 19 fixture and the fixtures surrounding it, would it be wise to have Kane, Son and KDB for GW 19? I feel like people are too fixated on the DGW players when these 3 could easily outscore many in one game as well as being great scorers in the other fixtures

It definitely would, depending on their form in the GWs before GW19.

Would be good to have those players post DGW as well.

Yep. Spurs fixtures are slightly worse post DGW but City have amazing fixtures both before and after DGW

Spurs have done OK with alleged tricky fixtures. They're predicting chances of a team result, not chances to score goals. City are poor, a blanket defence showed them up last night. De Bruyne played well, not FPL wise, problem is there's no cutting edge up front to kill teams from his magic crosses. A matchfit Aguero would have scored at least one of the chances that Gundogan and Sterling missed.

Dallas. Not a Leeds fan though I like them a lot, nice and positive. A Leeds supporter told me that Dallas has more attacking threat than Ayling.

I'm selling Vardy for Bamford though neither convince me too much.

Ryan has been poor. He was dropped and now is not their no.1 GK

      Time to transfer him out

    2FT 0.1ITB

    Martinez (Steele)
    Chilwell Dallas Lewis (Kilman Struijk)
    Salah KDB Bruno Grealish Soucek
    Kane DCL (Brewster)

My biggest issue right now if my 3rd playing defender.

Should I switch Lewis to Charlie Taylor or keep v/s Fulham?

Where can I use my 1FT?
