Why De Bruyne blanked against West Brom as Johnstone stars again

MAN CITY 1-1 WEST BROM

  • Goals: Ilkay Gündogan (£5.4m)
  • Own goals: Ruben Dias (£5.6m)
  • Assists: Raheem Sterling (£11.4m) | Semi Ajayi (£4.8m)
  • Bonus points: Gündogan x3, Kevin De Bruyne x2 (£11.9m), Sterling x2

DE BLANK OR NOT DE BLANK?

Owners of Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) were left frustrated by Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night.

The Belgian struggled to find the space to operate at his best level in Gameweek 13 as Slaven Bilić’s men executed the perfect away-day game plan at the Etihad Stadium.

With a trip to Southampton awaiting Manchester City on Saturday, the opening day of Gameweek 14, there are already mutterings of considering De Bruyne’s position in our squads – although it is worth assessing some of the mitigating circumstances for his midweek blank.

West Bromwich Albion were a massive contributing factor holding a compact 4-1-4-1 shape with incredible discipline and organisation for the entire game.

De Bruyne’s recent double-figure hauls at the Etihad Stadium were produced in games when he had the space to stretch his legs, drive the ball forward centrally to either pick out a pass or have a shot from range.

Against the Baggies, the gaps were so small that De Bruyne had very little opportunity to find his colleagues, who suffered from the same problem.

On multiple occasions, the Belgian was forced to either drop deeper to find this space or push out wide to the right flank – in either case, this only served to isolate him from Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m), Raheem Sterling (£11.4m) and Phil Foden (£6.4m) even more.

Average positions from the Etihad Stadium in Gameweek 13

Unable to play through the lines, Pep Guardiola’s men were largely restricted to hopeful balls into the box; meat and drink for West Bromwich Albion’s tall centre-backs to clear against City’s diminutive attackers.

Will the Citizens meet such a stubborn wall of resistance in every game this season? Absolutely not, especially not when three of their next four matches are on the road (Southampton, Everton and Chelsea).

JOHNSTONE’S PAIN TROPHY

Another important reason why De Bruyne backers were left wanting was West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) who produced some truly incredible saves during the closing stages.

When De Bruyne dropped deeper later in the game, he played two trademark whipped balls into the box, putting chances on a plate for Sterling and Ilkay Gündogan (£5.4m) from close range. These late key passes appear to have played a big part in De Bruyne securing two bonus points.

However, in both of these events, Johnstone was up to the challenge with sprawling stops that few Premier League goalkeepers would be capable of replicating.

A few minutes before those big chances, De Bruyne was handed a direct free-kick in his favourite area of the pitch, just on the edge of the penalty box.

The Belgian’s effort was destined for the bottom right-hand corner but Johnstone pushed it round the post spectacularly.

“The free-kick was a good save. It came through a lot of bodies. The headers were both close and luckily I managed to get a leg to them and keep them out of the net.” – Sam Johnstone

Johnstone already led the Premier League for saves before Gameweek 13 and, at the time of writing, he has extended his lead over Illan Meslier (£4.6m) to 10.

At the Etihad Stadium, the former Manchester United custodian made six stops, taking his tally of save points on the road to eight for the season.

It was another performance that might ask questions of how Fantasy managers select their captains moving forward. After all, selecting De Bruyne at home to the division’s worst defence should have resulted in a double-figure haul, right?

But while West Bromwich Albion have conceded five goals against the likes of Everton and Crystal Palace, their encounters with the bigger clubs, against the prime captain candidates have often been tight.

They raced into a 3-0 lead and eventually drew 3-3 with Chelsea back in Gameweek 3, Gameweek 8 saw them narrowly lose 1-0 to Spurs while the Baggies lost by a single goal to Manchester United at Old Trafford in Gameweek 9.

Across those three matches, Johnstone accrued 17 saves, an average of 5.7 per game, in line with the six registered against Manchester City on Tuesday night.

The goalkeeper’s next meeting with a big-club captaincy candidate is in Gameweek 15 when West Bromwich Albion travel to Anfield…

Manchester City XI (4-2-3-1): Ederson; B Mendy (Walker 75′), Aké, Dias, Cancelo; Rodri, Gündogan; Foden (Aguero 76′), De Bruyne, Sterling; Jesus.

West Bromwich Albion XI (4-1-4-1): Johnstone; Gibbs, O’Shea, Ajayi, Furlong; Sawyers; Diangana, Gallagher, Livermore (Krovinović 80′), M Phillips (Peltier 87′); Grant (Austin 70′).

No teams bar WHU and Leeds have 2 favourable fixtures for the DGW. With the added chance of benchings during the DGW, I don’t see the worth in a FH for gw19, would rather FH for the blank in gw18.

    What does everyone think?

I think FH in DGW19 or not rather depends on how you want your team to look before and after DGW19, and whether you intend to use wc before or after.

Mahrez-> Son the obvious move here right?
Mahrez was always a short term punt and he needs to go.

    McCarthy.
    Stones, James, Chilwell.
    KDB, Salah, Mahrez, Fernandes, Lookman.
    Bamford, DCL.
    Forster, Dallas, Brewster, Ferguson.
    1ft, 2.4m ITB.

It seems most people on here are FH in 18 and BB in 19. I currently have 8 blank GW players so can easily field a side for GW18.

I then think if you FH in GW19 rather than BB, you can get 11 top DGW players and fill your bench with rubbish. Otherwise you will be spreading your funds across 15 players which could mean you miss out on a premium player.

I can currently FH to this in GW19, all 11 have 2 games.
    Johnstone
    Coufal James Chilwell
Salah Mane Fernandes Pulisic/Ziyech (depends on fitness)
    Antonio Bamford Ings

Subs: Button Taylor (DGW) Douglas Burke

This gives me a great starting 11 rather than having a stronger bench if I used BB.

Would be interested to know what people think about this and also to see if any of you can change my mind by showing BB Squads of 15 DGW players. This also saves BB and Triple Captain to play later on in the season with your second WC.

Only my opinion guys so please don't be too harsh.

One final point, I will be happy to continue with my GW18 team in GW20 and beyond and can make a transfer before GW20 for Fernandes who has Sheff Utd at home.

    1. Ajax Hamsterdam
      • 9 Years

I think it depends of the structure of your team . Mine is more suited for dgw19 as I have no city assets apart from foden who will be gone soon. I could fill a good enough team for gw19 without taking any hits. That's my plan anyway 🙂

      1. Shawcus
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

        Yes I agree in part.

        My squad at present is:
        Martinez Forster
        Chilwell Taylor Lamptey Alioski Dunne
        Fernades KDB Grealish Son Anguissa
        Watkins Kane DCL

So I have a much better squad for GW18 than GW19 which is probably swaying my decision somewhat. Everyone will have different squads so each to their own.

          3 years, 4 months ago

You could say the same for those using BB as well though. I still think you need to pack your squad with DGW players. My argument is if you can pick 11 good players rather than spread the money around 15 players, you'll have more of a chance of the 11 playing 2 games rather than the 15 if using BB. Just my opinion bud.

The tricky part when building a team for dgw bb 19 is to make sure I don't miss out on players who only have one game gw19 and who could do well until then.

Had a look, but it gives me a headache. Year after year I make the mistake of getting on players for the DGW and ignoring the form of players without a double. This year I'm tempted to almost completely ignore it and retain chips. Can already field about 9 players in blank game week and 18 or so in double.

I like my team and will probably ignore it for time being.

There's always some good SGW players in the double. Not to mention the amount of injuries/other issues we could get by January. I get that it's part of the fun for a lot of people, and that's fine, but unless people have the first WC to still play with I wonder whether it's worth the effort.

Would you take a hit to bring in a keeper who has a DGW in 19 to be able to play BB?(maybe McCarthy), my other keeper is Mendy so it would be useless to rotate them later which would mean another transfer to sell the keeper... might as well play BB without a 2nd GK?

I have Mendy as well and will get rid as will need funds to field 2 playing keepers for BB19.

I'd advise for 2 playing keepers you could always save a transfer and sell later on if you need the funds .

If you play benchboost you must have a second goalkeeper, average for gk is around 4 points per game so 8 points would be normal for a gk, so even if you take a 4 point hit you gain 4 points.
But it might not be worth bb if it cost you some hits to get a decent bench. If its for free and happy with bench, fine
Im wondering this, maybe better to save bb until later or play it now with good singel gameweek players since it will cost me hits.

He was trying very hard last night. Those who say he wasn't at it must have been looking at another game.

The guy could not have done any more...

Thought that was a better save, gundogan at least tried to put it to the side of him.

Sterling was in the middle of the goal and just hit the keeper

Hi all, what would you suggest please from A or B below:
A: Mahrez and Jota > Zaha and Grealish (-4)
          B: Jota > Greenwood

          Thanks in advance

I think i might follow Camzys plan.

          GW18: FH
          GW19: BB
          GW20: WC

Only hesitance from me is will the future doubles be worth wildcarding and benchboostimg for. I read Ben Crillins twitter posts and he believes any blanks might be spread out in different weeks so won't be a proper double in any gameweek. But I'm not sure how accurate he is.

            Why WC in 20?

Why not just FH, BB and save the wildcard

What players would you bench boost with?

I'll have Adams, Balbuena, Zouma, Pope in Bench Boost

I don't want so much value tied in the bench. I'll only save wildcard if i save bench boost. I can use my own FTs to get a decent team for the other doubles and blanks. I just want to know if its worth bench boosting here more than the other doubles. Which no one can know really so its a little annoying.

Simple answer is yes. Most likely the biggest double of the year because of the biggest blank of the year.

dunno about the GW20 wildcard but free hitting and bench boost looks the right move

What to do with Mendy? Martinez to Mendy transfer 2 weeks back has backfired heavily but I just have to keep the faith now I guess?

KTF. Its been a bad couple of weeks but i still Chelsea have the best defensive unit in the league and just need to get back on track. See mine below.

            Have 2 FT's

What about these 3 moves for a -4?

            Chilwell>>James
            Torres>>Son
            DCL>>DCR

            Giving a team of:

            Martínez
            James Cresswell Robertson
            KDB Son Salah Grealish
            DCR Kane Bamford

Absolutely shameful from WBA owners. A man gives them a promotion in his first season, and they repay him by not giving him a single penny for transfers so that the team can properly fight for PL survival. I hope Big Sam loses out every match until the end of the season, because the owners do not deserve to taste even a single point until up to GW38

For someone with a WC I have flexibility to plan for BBGW19 but this means that I’ll be spreading my WC funds (e.g. getting a second keeper) just for this one week. Am I not better off picking the best possible WC for the rest of the season and ignoring GW19 (perhaps just FH then?)

Would love to know peoples views especially those with WC 1 left?

So WC GW17 then use FH GW18 and BB GW19?

For the GW19 and maximise BB. Or just start planning FTs for GW19.

Well I missed the deadline and burnt a transfer so, thoughts on what to do with Jota then?

            Martinez, Forster
            Robbo, Chilwell, James, Dallas, 3.9
            KDB, Bruno, Grealish, Jota, Stephens
            Kane, DCL, Bamford

            2 FT 1.9 ITB
