Lamptey absent for Brighton as Brewster earns Sheffield United start

Tariq Lamptey (£4.8m) misses out for the second time in three gameweeks as Brighton face Sheffield United at home.

After a hamstring issue saw the defender not risked in Gameweek 12, Lamptey sustained a knock during the Gameweek 13 draw away to Fulham. Speaking before Sunday’s early kick-off, Graham Potter reported:

Tariq has got a slight problem with his hamstring, so he’s ruled out of the game.

It’s the third game of the week for Danny Welbeck, so we might use him at the back end of today’s match, rather than the start.

With Steven Alzate, it’s a quick turnaround and he hasn’t played too much football recently. So we’ve brought Neal [Maupay], Aaron [Connolly] and Joel [Veltman] in, they’ve done well for us and we’re looking forward to the game.

In his pre-match press conferece on Friday, Potter had said of right-back Lamptey:

Tariq Lamptey has recovered well from Wednesday. We took him off because a little bit of a knock but we’ll make a decision between now and Sunday.

Tariq Lamptey suffered an injury in Brighton’s midweek 0-0 draw at Fulham

The shape-shifting Potter appears to be going for a back three in Gameweek 14, matching up with Sheffield United’s regular formation.

Danny Welbeck (£5.5m) is demoted to the bench, with one of Neal Maupay (£6.1m) or Aaron Connolly (£5.3m) set to lead a fluid Seagulls attacking line. Steven Alzate (£4.3m) is the other play to drop out from midweek.

Robert Sánchez (£4.4m) continues in goal after taking the place of Mat Ryan (£4.4m) in midweek. Jason Steele (£4.0m) is Potter’s preferred back-up goalkeeping option. In his post-Fulham interview, the Brighton manager explained:

I made the decision to go with Rob [in GW13], he has some incredible attributes we wanted to use. He will [keep the spot ahead of Mat Ryan]. He earned his place on merit and how he has worked and I think his performance was good tonight [vs Fulham].

Jason Steele I feel plays the role of the number two really well, that is where we are.

Potter added on Sunday:

Robert Sanchez has got all the attributes to be a top goalkeeper, the one thing he lacks is games and experience. It’s our job to help him.

For the Blades, Sander Berge (£5.0m) is sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Oli McBurnie (£5.6m) remains absent with a shoulder problem.

Budget hero of yesteryear John Lundstram (£5.0m) has been drafted in by Chris Wilder to replace Norway man Berge.

Rhian Brewster (£4.5m) earns a start up front alongside David McGoldrick (£5.2m), as budget midfielder Oliver Burke (£4.3m) drops to the substitutes’ bench.

It is Brewster’s first time in Wilder’s starting XI since a 62-minute showing during the defeat to Chelsea in Gameweek 8. On the striker, the Blades boss said:

He’s been knocking on the door. It’s been difficult to pick the side, the players understand that at the moment because nobody’s really sticking their hand up and forcing the issue.

I’ve been contemplating different ways…whether it’s the personnel or the system or whatever.

The time now is for him [Brewster] to play in this game.

Brighton XI (3-4-2-1): R Sánchez; White, Webster, Dunk; March, Bissouma, Lallana, Veltman; Trossard, Maupay; Connolly.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; J Robinson, Egan, Basham; Stevens, Fleck, Ampadu, Lundstram, Baldock; McGoldrick, Brewster.

A quick sanity check please, I have the following 8 nailed DGW19 players and 2 FTs presently:

    Mendy
    Chilwell Ayling
    Salah Bruno Soucek
    Bamford Wood

I can use these 5 FTs to bring in Kane, Son, Coufal, Lookman, McCarthy and have 11 DGWers.

    Sound good?

Well losing Henderson was a big part of it imo, they lost faith in themselves. But also I actually think alot of this has to do with Lundstram believe it or not.
I feel Lundstram was a key part of their success last season and then Wilder started messing with him. Sure he has had fairly decent minutes this season, but isnt performing the same.

They were always going to struggle this season, pre season I tipped them to go down, and im not surprised in the slightest, they had goal scoring issues last season and hoped Brewster would address that but he has turned out to be a total flop.

So to summarise, their defence got far worse, and their goal scoring rate reduced from a bad rate to borderline terrible.

      1) Massive downgrade from Henderson to Ramsdale = conceding more goals
      2) Injures in defence = conceding more goals
      3) No Lundstram = scoring fewer goals
      4) Opposition giving them more respect (particularly relegation fighting teams) - scoring fewer goals

I suggest anyone still holding Lamptey ditches him asap, he is the biggest let down this season imo.

    - Injury prone
    - Card magnet
    - Fun to watch, but never translates in to FPL points
    - Brighton are total garbage in attack and defence

I had him since season start, ditched him 3 weeks ago and kept KWP. Best decision I made.
He is no where near the finished article, and imo wont ever be an FPL option as long as he is at Brighton.

He needs to grow as a player, hopefully someone like Wolves sign him and make him a decent asset worth having, but until that happens I'd avoid.

      He was 4.5?

I think that people's expectations have got completely carried away personally.

I've played him about 5 times this season - he scored a goal and got me a cleanie in those 5 games.
If only my more expensive DFers would do so 'badly' and I'd be going along just fine.

Fair enough, I needed him today so that's annoying, but at 4.5 (pp), I'm happy to let him sit out the tough games and play the easier ones. Plus I need him BGW18 too.

He is overly-hyped. But that's not his fault, nor does it make him a bad pick.

If you brought him in because of the hype and were expecting him to be like a big hitter - then it's you who needs to look at your expectations

The issue is when you watch him, he looks great, so attacking so he seems a good option. But my pateince wore thin, I was doing a Lamptey/KWP rotation for ages. And playing Lamptey tbh in 85% of instances, but he is too frustrating.

In the end I decided KWP is just a better option, at least Saints can be relied on to some extent for good CS chance at home. I have zero faith of Brighton keeping a CS in any game home or away.

In Brightons last 6 games, he has got a red card and missed 3 games, he did somehow get a CS in one game during that period. But thats really bad, he cant be relied upon at all imo

Let’s put it this way.....what is the minimum number of players you’re willing to field in GW18 to forego taking a free hit

This is why the Villa DGW is essential if it goes ahead.........the overlap would allow navigating both GW18 and GW19 without using a FH

Whose the best CHE attacker to get for the next few weeks?

Werner, Giroud, Tammy, Puli, Mount...or avoid them all and just add Son with Kane in squad already.

Lundstram what the hell was that. No need to go in with that much force there.

    Lundy RC?

Harsh IMO. You can't stop these types of incidents happening in 50/50s. Unless they want to stop these 50/50s altogether.

The red card is ok and VAR giving the ref notion of a possible serious foul is ok. But there is No difference between that takle and Godfreys tackle yesterday. That is the problem. It looks worse because lundstram actually hits his opponent, but the seriousness of foul is the same. So VAR intervenes in the one case but not the other do totally random what is being checked or not. Better to have refs doing errors than having a system which relies upon WHOs in the VAR room at any time.
