Can we trust Everton’s FPL assets as appealing run of fixtures continues?

Fantasy Premier League managers can be forgiven for having trust issues right now.

Not only are many of the premium options struggling to deliver, Everton let their backers down in Gameweek 21 with a surprise 2-0 defeat to Newcastle.

However, Carlo Ancelotti’s men still have appealing fixtures on the horizon, including Gameweek 22 and 24 meetings with Leeds (away) and Fulham (home).

We asked the Scout Network if they still trust Everton assets and whether or not they will be investing in the near future.

Ted Talks FPL

Ted Talks FPL Graphic for Lucas Digne

After tripling up on Everton in Gameweek 21 against a supposedly suspect Newcastle side, I was left disappointed with the blank from all three players.

I like to think of transferring in players as like getting on a bus. You can choose to get on a bus that’s already running but accept the fact that you’re not going to get the first seat OR get on a stationary one at the bus station with no driver, hoping that it’s about to go somewhere. The latter is a perfect analogy for tripling up on Everton players. At least I’ve got a comfortable seat!

The Toffees’ attacking statistics in the last four matches don’t make for positive reading as they sit third-worst for total shots and rock-bottom for big chances.

Before bringing these guys in, my main caveat for the poor attacking numbers was the missing personnel that combined so well in the early stages of the season. But Everton had most of their best players back against Newcastle and yet were still sluggish in the transition from defence to attack.

They showed signs of brilliance but the overwhelming thought was they struggled to create clear cut opportunities to score. I am hoping it’s just a matter of time before the key players start gelling again.

Everton will need to get their mojo back fast ahead of the midweek clash with Leeds, who have been obliging defensively. Marcelo Bielsa’s side have conceded 51 big chances over the course of the season – only West Brom have conceded more.

It is worth noting that Leeds won this fixture 1-0 at Goodison Park so it might not be all plain sailing for Everton. However, on paper, this is an ideal fixture for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, James Rodriguez and Lucas Digne to kick-start their form but I said the same thing before Newcastle.

With Fulham at home in Gameweek 24 too, there are plenty of reasons to persist with these players until a Wildcard safety net in Gameweek 25. I just wouldn’t rush to buy them until they’ve shown signs of improvement.

Returning Digne can help Everton's attacking assets return to form in Gameweek 20

Everton’s Luca Digne

Gameweek 21 came around quickly, with the promise of a points bonanza for Everton at home to a much maligned, out of form and under pressure Newcastle team. With Lucas Digne, James Rodríguez and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all back… surely a goal-fest beckoned.

2-0 to Newcastle was the result. Of course. This is the 20/21 season after all.

What does this mean for the Jekyll and Hyde Everton in February?

With five games in three weeks against Leeds, Man Utd, Spurs (FA Cup), Fulham and Liverpool, this is a season-defining period for the Toffees. Those fixtures don’t exactly inspire confidence for FPL managers, but the thing is, it would be really rather nice if Calvert-Lewin could fill the rather large Harry Kane/Jamie Vardy shaped hole in our teams.

For that to happen, Everton are going to need more from James Rodriguez (one goal, no assists since Gameweek 5) and the return of Allan is pivotal (expected back for the Manchester United game). The stability he offers to the Everton midfield is vital for their attacking output.

There are more in form forward options out there in Michail Antonio, Alexander Lacazette and Callum Wilson. Or perhaps with clean sheets occurring with more regularity, it is time to switch your team formation to 4-5-1.

With defence in mind, Lucas Digne at £6.0m needs to be delivering points every other week to justify his price tag. We had high hopes after seeing him on the left wing against Leicester, but Carlo Ancelotti dropped him back into a more orthodox full-back role for the Newcastle game.

The Leeds match in Gameweek 22 looks like a decent prospect for points for Everton assets. Will it be the turning point for the remainder of their season?

BUREVE scout notes

Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison

Harry Kane’s injury meant there was an injury in my front-three moving forward and Everton’s fixtures led me to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

While this didn’t pay off in Gameweek 21 there is plenty of potential for the £7.6m forward to make a return to the FPL points as we became so accustomed to in the early Gameweeks of the season.

Everton lost their way for a while in terms of goals, clean sheets and FPL points with injuries to key players. However, the return of Lucas Digne, James Rodriguez and Richarlison means that Everton are nearly back to having the personal who were so prolific with points returns in the first third of the season. Allan is the only one they’re still waiting on.

For me, Jordan Pickford’s tendency towards a mistake which costs Everton the clean sheet means that I am less willing to invest £6.0m in Digne. However with injuries to Kane and Vardy up top as well as Kevin De Bruyne in midfield, and players like Bruno Fernandes out of form it is worth a look at the Everton attacking asset, especially ahead of a game against Leeds who haven’t kept a clean sheet since Gameweek 16 when they face West Brom.

Scout Network: Investing in Everton? 2

El Statto Graphic’s from Jumpersforgoalposts.info

Like many other managers, I took the leap of faith on Dominic Calvert-Lewin in Gameweek 21, a decision influenced more by Harry Kane’s injury than my unyielding belief in the player himself.

As you can see from the graphic, all Everton players are deemed differentials apart from Calvert-Lewin and I think there is a good reason for that. They are just too inconsistent right now.

The Toffees’ upcoming games are mixed so I’m not sure I would be rushing to bring in any of their assets. Lucas Digne could be a possible option due to the attacking threat he offers, but with everyone else averaging less than 4.0 points per game I feel there is much better value else where.

This week's DCL trap (into which I fell too) is a classic one and I for one intend to learn from it.

There are plenty of times I make resolutions to do (x) or no longer do (y) but in most of these cases there are nuances and you end up breaking them occasionally, often yielding results.

But the one classic which I hope will never break again is - don't trust a player who is out of form to suddenly come good for any reason whatsoever, up to and including:

    - New manager
    - Good fixtures
    - The return to fitness/form of creative player(s) who several gameweeks ago provided chances

There are numerous reasons to jump on a bandwagon early, but none whatsoever to jump on a bandwagon which may or may not even have any wheels attached. Lesson learned. Moving on 🙂

      EDIT: (if I could)

I know he might come good and I didn't get him for one gameweek. But I toyed with giving him the armband. The armband FFS, FFS!

Getting a player before he starts scoring points? I don't think so. Only if a new player has been signed and goes straight into the team and it looks as if they have the starting position nailed and have the quality to do something with it (Cazorla, Costa etc)

But those players are not out of form, they are at worst an unknown quantity.

How would a player ever get into form if they're off form then? For every DCL there is a Salah, granted yes Salah has way more ability but your point is bad form doesn't suddenly turn good

My point is, there is no harm (ever really) in waiting for a game or two for a player.

Form certainly doesn't suddenly turn good, but I think you need something there to be able to jump on. With DCL he was without an attacking return for ages and I think a lot of us were expecting the good fixture and the renewed creative presence around him to reignite him. We need to see form from the player himself, even if it's two games, even one game....

                  3 years, 3 months ago

Well the harm is missing out on points surely? Salah was in terrible form himself especially numbers wise, granted he looked better vs spurs

Everton had an off day, it can happen

Not sure I agree with this - the Antonio DGW bandwagon was similar (good fixtures, key players back in the team), I’m sure there’s countless other examples too.

I get your point with the Antonio bandwagon, and indeed, I got him in, but it could be argued that Antonio has never been out of form. When he's fit, he performs, and often even carries the team. Antonio had a good DGW and I wanted him long term, I think he was worth the risk. So good point but I don't think he's in quite the same category.

Yes, different kettle of fish that.
I'm thinking that we've seen a bunch of players with high returns earlier this season that have had a dry patch recently. But some of those will come good again. How often is your list of red flags the trigger for the return to form? I don't know the answer, just wondering.

Totally agree but critically they have had two matches now where they have kept clean sheets and looked very solid. What I would be advising against according to my new gospel would have been getting a Chelsea defender *before* the Wolves game. I'm tempted now though 🙂 maybe Mendy as I already have triple City defence.

I actually did. I wildcarded ahead of that gameweek and got 2 Chelsea defenders. I was bedazzled by reports of Tuchel's use of wingbacks, so unfortunately I went with Chilwell and James. Got 56 points over 2 games out of that but wish I'd opted for Tilva and Azpili.

There are plenty of teams who suddenly shoot into great form when the fixtures turn. I don't think MAGA's points are all correct. Part of making big gains in FPL is getting on bandwagons before they start. If you always wait for a big haul before getting on you will rarely get ahead.

It's why I don't really regret getting on Digne and DCL early. The signs were there. They put in a great performance in the cup vs Sheff Wed. Just a blip against Newcastle. Of course, you can occasionally be wrong, but backing a good team with good fixtures will more often work than not. You just remember the times it doesn't work more sharply.

Spot on Camzy. Best thing about FPL is getting on a bandwagon early or before a monster haul - I did Robbo to Cancelo for a -4 before his 17 pointer....was a risky move but love it when these pay off

My answer to that is it depends how they play. Leeds were terrific against Leicester, so I wouldn't put a downer on Foxes if I had any. Spurs were dreadful against Brighton so i dumped Son. If Everton play well but are beat by an excellent Leeds, I wouldn't worry. If DCL gets no chances or is profligate, I'll worry.

If Leeds perform well again probably the right move is to get some of them back in your team regardless of Everton ‘potential’.
I mean I just sold Bamford and Dallas this week which ended up 20 point swing.

aha but there is a difference between transferring someone in and keeping them 🙂 yes I kept Salah because on his day he's the best FPL points scorer in the league, because of his ownership, and because I can't find a way to spend the money on downgrading him. Would I have got him in on form prior to last night though? Probably not.

Your argument is about form, right?. So you would rather keep an out of form premium as appose to bringing in a player who played against one of the worst teams in the league.
Besides, how many striker options are there really?

If I could rephrase the top post I would have done, in hindsight (double hindsight you might argue!).

I do think there is a distinction between a.) the type of player Salah is, who even out of form can create something from absolutely nothing, can carry his team and who you wouldn't be surprised if he scored a hat trick in any game against any opposition, no matter how out of form he is. That's why he's premium, that's why he's a different type of asset ...

... and b.) the likes of DCL/Bamford/Lacazette who are more strikers than all round footballers, who need the supply lines and their team to be on form (can you imagine Bamford playing for Burnley or even Spurs on current form?) and who also need to be in a good place themselves to have chances presented to them and then be able to finish those chances.

Players in the b.) category need to be treated with more caution, which is why I think explosive premium assets need less of a watching brief on them.

                  All IMO anyway!

The point is, you were focussing on DCL. Many of us who brought him in last week did so specifically because his supply lines in the form of Digne, Rodriguez and Richarlison were restored. Everton seemed to have the whole package (minus Allan) that brought such blistering early season form for DCL. In hindsight, it wasn't to be, but at the time the decision did tick your boxes.

                      🙂

This all turned out to be more of a debate than I expected TBH. Reading it all, I think I would still stand by the core of my argument but I'd probably phrase the argument better.

And it's more of a personal resolution than to try and convince anyone else that doing (or not doing) something is the right way to go about things. For me, I've decided (for now) that I don't think I mind missing out on a week's worth of points in order to get that little bit of extra insight into whether a move is the right one.

And, I should reiterate, that I made the DCL move for all the reasons everyone else did, for what it's worth haha

Without the benefit of hindsight I still think Bamford to DCL made sense, DCL looked decent in the games he's played since injury and with the fixtures and creative players returning it all seemed to line up nicely. Then you look at Bamford, only 1 shot in the previous 2 gws and it looked like Leeds form was getting very patchy. It was clearly a bad move in hindsight but I've had more moves like this pay off for me than backfire.

This type of thinking is more likely to see you miss out on points by being too cautious

I benched Bamford and played Antonio and DCL. DCL seemed an obvious player to play, Antonio vs Bamford wasn't obvious and could have gone either way. Antonio had form but was against an historically good defence who hasn't been great. Bamford was against a decent defence who was personally out of form.

Rational decisions are still rational decisions even if after the fact things didn't turn out. I'm not saying saying everything that didn't turn out is 'bad', it just didn't work out.

That's unlucky, Antonio did have a couple of good chances and looked amazing in last few gws. I tried to play aggressive as my hits have all been paying off so did bamford and soucek to DCL and Mane -4. I captained mane and vc on Gundogan….I would've captained Salah if I hadn't got mane but don't like have c and vc in same match! Brewster to DCL for free was going to be my move but the mane move cost me 30+pts in the end

It's these tiny decisions that can really shape a big chunk of your season and overall rank.

I was looking back through my gameweeks and I captained KDB and owned sterling the week sterling missed the penalty, which was something like a 19 point swing.
I then benched Soucek's 15 points 2 gameweeks ago and benched Bamford's 15 points last gameweek.

You add all that together and it's a good 40-50 point swing and they are just tiny tiny things going wrong.

I think it is because the basic premise isn't quite there.

You came across (to me) as saying that it is always wrong to choose a player not in form, but form is literally an 'on' or 'off' thing.

Someone is not in form, until they are in form, then randomly will stop being in form again.

Therefore it isn't 'wrong' to buy a player not in form, it's just a gamble. What you appear to be saying is that YOU do not want to gamble. Everyone responding has suggested they'd often be willing to make the gamble or that it at least does often return in a decent haul.

Upgrade DEF or roll the FT?
Would much prefer to roll but my defence feels vulnerable and I want 3 starters this week.

          Cancelo (bur)
          Stones (bur)
          Dier (CHE)
          Ayling (EVE)
          Balbuena (avl)

Upgrading Balbuena this GW is on the cards, but it'll happen this side of GW24 regardless, ideally with more info re DGWs.

I am thinking the opposite.I would downgrade Balbuena to Phillips to save some money and start him vs Brighton over Dier/Ayling.

Hard on DCL as the service to him was awful. IMO the first thing they need to do is check Siggy out the side, the guy was a total liability past it. Get a holder in there till Allen gets back to break it up and give it to James Rod quickly to get Digne Rich Coleman in around the sides quickly...

Absolutely, Siggy was fine when Rodriguez was out but together they aren't mobile enough.

Leeds game is really interesting. DCL can easily get a couple by standing in the six-yard box, and they're bad at set pieces too. Equally it may just be too energetic for them without Allan.

                3 years, 3 months ago

Yup, siggy should only play if they have all creative attackers out. He's a liability other than that, legs have gone if he ever had them

              Twitter:

Mourinho on Kane: "...but Harry is optimistic, he has the experience of some injuries in his ankles.

"And in Harry’s mind, it’s a couple of weeks; so let’s see if he’s right."

I was going to hold but the updated 'unknown return date' status is leaning me towards selling

Any obvious moves here? Got 1FT and 9.9m in the bank after moving KDB>Gundo and Kane > DCL...

Keep hold of the cash ready for one of Kane/KDB coming back, or any moves here?

              Martinez
              Dias - Stones - Holding
              Salah - Bruno - Gundo - Soucek
              Antonio - Bamford - DCL

Bench: Meslier - Dier - Coufal - Smith Rowe

              Son-Salah (C)-Soucek-Bruno

              Areola-Holding-Coufal-Bissouma
              1FT and 3.7 itb

Anything worth a transfer or save?
              Right bench order?

After 8 consecutive green arrows. Two red arrows in a row seeing me drop from 5k to 17k and need to fix that as I feel like knee jerking now following lost points already. I had soucek on bench last week, I had salah for weeks and sold him for gundo this week, captaining DCL, etc and need to get back on track as my ML rivals are catching up eventually.

              Your thoughts?

              Martinez - Fabianski
              Cancelo - Justin - Chilwell - Coufal - Dallas
              Bruno - Son - Gundo - Soucek - Raphinha
              DCL - Bamford - Watkins

              ITB: 9.5 and 1 FT.
              Possible options:
              1) Loose both Leeds and WHU triple ups to (Coufal to TAA & Raphinha to Zaha) for example?
              2) Getting Maddison or Periera
              3) Save FT

Unlucky with your last 2 gws - in FPL anytime I try and be clever it always backfires on me! Like you say, get back on track and get back to basics....who's the best captain option this week - Salah. I'd do Soucek or Raphina to Salah. Possibly could do Chilwel to TAA/Robbo for a -4?

Trust issues with getting Salah back to see him rested before Man City and Leicester games..

Accept the mistake re Salah and bring him back pronto.

But there's a chance Salah getting rested before Man City and Leicester games where he wouldn't be a definite captain pick?

Ok then. Don’t get the most reliable scoring machine in the game over multiple seasons who recently had a rest and bagged a brace in 23 mins earlier this year and plays a rubbish def bc there’s a chance he can be rested.

I wouldn't say most reliable. Salah has blanked in 6 games in a row until this week. You can imagine the frustration and two big games ahead where he's definitely not going to be a captain pick.

Would you start Pope or Johnstone?I think that SUtd will win in the most important game of the season.Pope could get a lot of saves.

Hoping for a WBA cleanie? Never. Pope can make a ton of saves even without a CS.
