Scoutcast Episode 371 – FPL managers set for uninspiring Blank Gameweek 29

Scoutcast regulars Joe and Seb are joined by Fantasy Football Scout editor David to look at the key issues facing Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers ahead of Blank Gameweek 29.

With just four fixtures, the weekend’s schedule looks particularly uninspiring.

But while Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane (£11.5m) is the standout captaincy pick ahead of the north London side’s clash with Aston Villa, there still could be plenty of low-owned gems and bargain points-scorers to help propel FPL bosses up the rankings.

Our trio sift through each fixture to find the likeliest sources of goals, assists and clean sheets.

Attacking defenders are also looked at in detail, as Joe, Seb and David try to find players who can return at both ends of the pitch.

Seb takes his turn to pick a differential, Joe pitches a new TV show involving West Ham United’s on-loan star Jesse Lingard (£6.1m) and David reveals more about Fulham than the Scoutcast bargained for.

There are the next four fixtures to frisk, too. This will help FPL managers look beyond Blank Gameweek 29 to reveal the twists and turns of the schedule over the next month.

Rough with the Smooth returns and the crew also look at their Gameweek 28 scores.

Seeing an unbelievable amount of interest in Brighton Def, not a lot in Maupay, any reason why?

Maybe is a useless footballer that’s why. Also Newcastle struggle to score so defence is a safe bet

More chance of a clean sheet than of a Maupay goal I'd say

Brighton def makes fairly decent long-term bench fodder plus a fair chance of a CS this week.

Maupay isn't really a good long term pick given other options available (Bamford, Antonio, Watkins, Adams, etc).

I'd consider him on a FH but that's it.

Newcastle blunt in attack. Trossard and Gross better options in the Brighton attack if you think they score.

    Barnes --> Bale
    Digne --> Cresswell
    Cancelo --> Veltman
    For a -4

Gets me up to 9 players if Bamford is fit. What do you reckon?

    Posted on last article...
1.9 itb and 2 FTs. Plan is to WC31... currently can field 8 assuming all are fit

    MARTINEZ AEROLA
    DALLAS KONSA COUFAL (cancelo dias)
    SON* RAPH (Salah Bruno Gundo)
    BAMFORD* ANTONIO (dcl)

Planning the following moves... any good?

    Cancelo Gundo DCL
    TO
    Veltman Lookman Kane

Given that you already have 3 defenders starting, and the limited upside in getting a 4th, in your situation I'd do the following moves (assuming Son is out and Bamford starts):

Son, Gundo, DCL to Lingard, Kane and Trossard.

      1. Pukki Blinders
        • 4 Years

Agreed with the lack of upside in a defender, but Then I’ll have no Son for Newcastle, that’s the only worry. Isnt removing Salah a better option?

Yes, could be an option to lose Salah instead I guess. You may want him for gw33 so might be an idea to have a plan to get him back though.

    2 FT's

    DCL to Antonio?

Liam Cooper injury annoying but not worth a -4 to bring in another 4-5mil defender

Having been through a few scenarios this morning, I don't see that much upside in a FH33. I will have most of the players I want for 33 anyway when I WC in 31. If both Son and Bamford are ruled out this week (which will leave me with 7, or 8 with a hit), that will be the straw that breaks the camel's back so to speak. Anyone else thinking along similar lines?

    1. GoonerByron
      • 12 Years

I'm taking a -8 this GW and saving the free hit.

There will still be at least one or two more DGWs that I think it could end up being worth a lot more than 8 points to me.

How many will you be fielding, or more to the point, who will you be fielding?

11.. -4 if Son is fit, -8 if he's not to do Son -> Bale.. With an average blank being 2 points, I'll happily take that risk per player for the chance of a haul from 11.

Looking at something like this at the moment -

          Martinez
          Dallas - Ayling - Reguilon
          Auba - Raphina - Son/Bale - Pepe - Trossard
          Kane (c) - Watkins

I think if I was in your position, I would do the same. If I FH it will be to something like:

            Sanchez
            Dallas Anderson Dunk
            Auba Bale Raphinha Lingard Trossard
            Kane Maja

an 8 point hit is just silly. The two extra players will have to return to justify it. You instantly drop rank and have to catch up (you're also more likely buying players that lots of people already have (without a hit)

I like the fixtures in 33, yes people will have some players from the premium options but not all, plus with City/Spurs blanking they’ll have to bench or transfer out. Im not sure I want to do that so will focus on this for 33.

      Brighton defence
      United attack
      Villa (Jack should be back)
      Leicester attack
      Liverpool def/attack

Dele Alli on a FH lads?
I doubt Son will play, really. If he plays he taks risks and he makes him eligible to south korean friendly game so I don't think Mou will line him up.
This makes Dele Alli a possible interesting option maybe as a 10 for a part of the game then a 9.5 when Bale is subbed off.
Crazy punt or worth taking it?

All content on FHs I've seen so far, not just FFS, has been absolute dross. The FPL bubble is ripe with ludicrous simplified, unthought-out rhetoric.

    - Must own if high owned
    - Must avoid if high owned (to make the FH more valuable)
    - Only get player X if important player Y is out (for coverage)
    - Despite having no money issues, get the cheaper player to upgrade elsewhere
    - Oh I'm not going to waste more time on it. It never ends

    Have a good day all!

I'm imagining the Gabriel role at City played by Gabriel at Arsenal, except Martinelli can finish. Not sure if he makes a good Laca replacement, but I think Arteta would prefer Nketiah to be a bit better than he is so he could do that role. Luckily, Marti could be the guy, but Laca is different, and I think Arteta is pragmatic enough to want alternatives. If Balogun stays, he is a bit more adept ad hold-up, for instance, I believe, if/when he's ready for the first team.

I'd go Stones and playing fodder and/or a good fifth mid for bench jam.

Argument too for Ederson over Dias. Same value ever since when and easy to get another keeper in for 33 so there are no benchings issues then. Dias will take up a space. This is assuming no FH and that you don't want Martinez for the run in with those fixtures.

Ederson instead of Dias could be a good shout but I was eyeing up Mendy to be my keeper who is cheaper. Also 6 is likely to be the maximum Ederson will get. Apart from when he got that assist which won't happen again, only once has he got more than 6pts.

Just dubious about Dias at that price for cs and outside attacking returns. I've been waiting for Pep to rest him for ages and it may just be he is there for the duration - that would be the most Pep move of all time. Not rotating someone - bar the illness - all season!

Yeah agree. No realistic attacking threat really and I generally don't like having defenders who have no attacking threat because as soon as that goal goes in its a guaranteed 1 or 2pts. May look elsewhere and go without City completely.

Anyone else thinking of getting Yoshida in?

My team now is a sea of claret and blue and white - even with no Fulham

Have no idea of what to hope for from Villa Spurs - rather suspect a postponement of the Gameweek might be the best outcome 🙂

Anyone else on the no blue or red look?

Seems to me like a GW to forget unless FH-ing. Get 8-9 out and it's a loterry of small green, small red or grey arrow. If WC soon then there's no extra consideration needed. If no WC like me then need to think a bit to ensure any transfers/hits are useful for next few weeks.

        No WC here

GW31 is the tricky one. Ideally I'd be getting in Arsenal now for that SHU fixture but Arteta doesn't feel any safer than Pep. I'm also left hoping that City Leeds is a low scoring affair with a Stones goal in a 1-0. After that I'm relaxed enough as WC squads need to gamble on where DGWs fall and could backfire easily.

I have tried few scenarios and it looks that I can navigate GW31 without WC ok. FH33 is also helping to focus on other weeks. Will save FT GW30 and do -4 for mini WC GW31. Team look fine by doing that, fingers crossed. The headache is to decide what transfer BGW29 which supports next few GWs. Tierny seems a good option but is he going to start games regularly?

Looked at Tierney closey but have decided to go Cresswell. Dull move with far less upside given EO. Banking on Moyes being Moyes here and even if WH fall back into the pack a bit their defence will hold up.

Arsenal cs record horrid really given their general solidity - that was what finally decided it for me more than the rotation risk.

Would do Cresswell myself if did not have him. Got him in DGW19 and no regret! I've got Martinez Leno rotation in mind if not Tierney with Mendy on goal. Rudiger TAA Coady/Shaw are the rest. Midfield is the most difficult to plan.

Bendinnery: Very surprised if Son returns this weekend... differs greatly from the hamstring issue he suffered earlier in the season.

Was looking at Auba for 29 only but seen he plays Sheffield United in 31. Anyone else thinking of holding for the long term? They have good fixtures until the end of the season.

they also have a europa league match between gw 30-31, he will probably play liverpool so watch out for rotation there

You missed out the GW30 fixture which is bright green on current form 🙂

Rotation the major issue but that said with rotation he's been closely matching all other premiums bar Kane and Bruno. If he misses completely you just need to make sure there's a nice first bench.

Blocked from him until 31 but may well go there then and hold. Chasing.

Thoughts on Andersen (fulham)? decent attacking numbers (had 4 shots, 3 OT vs Crystal Palace) - shows he capable of winning attacking aerial duels. Leeds don't look solid and are 3rd lowest in the league for XG conceded from set pieces. Bear in mind Cooper is out as well... On FH btw
