Eliteserien 2021 – Scout Picks Runde 2

GOALKEEPER

Andreas Linde (MOL – 6.5mNOK, 16.2%) vs. Tromsø (A)
  • Tromsø (A) = They might have had 13 shots against Bodø/Glimt, but only 2 of them were on target
  • vs Kristiansund he saved 5/5 on target shots – the most of any goalkeeper in Runde 1 to save all target shots faced
  • Made 31 successful high claims in the Eliteserien last season – the most of any goalkeeper playing this week
  • Sits behind a good defence and even better midfield – Molde are more than capable of coming away from this game with a clean sheet especially as Runar Espejord (7.5mNOK) is set to miss out for Tromsø

DEFENDERS

Birk Risa (MOL – 6.0mNOK, 24.8%) vs. Tromsø (A)
  • Played 2 key passes versus Kristiansund – the joint most of any defender in Runde 1 and only 5 players produced more
  • Drew 3 fouls – one of which won a penalty for his team
  • As well being an attacking defender, he is also quite good at defending, posting these stats against Kristiansund on Sunday: 5/6 ground duels won, 3 clearances, 2 interceptions and 2 tackles
  • 12 of his 31 accurate passes were completed in the final 1/3
  • Was probably Molde’s best player other than Fredrik Aursnes in Runde 1
Adam Andersson (RBK – 6.0mNOK, 1.1%) vs. Viking (H)
  • Viking (H) = Rosenborg scored 3rd highest number of goals in home fixtures last season (34) while Viking conceded the 3rd highest number of goals in away fixtures (30)
  • Against Vålerenga his passing accuracy was 86.21% (2nd best for Rosenborg) and recorded 2 key passes (joint highest)
  • Looked good when tasked with having to deal with the best dribbler in the league (Aron Dønnum) despite receiving a yellow card
  • 13 of Vålerenga’s 15 shots were inside the box yet only 4 in total were on target – Rosenborg are good at forcing other teams into making errors (Viking managed just 4 on target shots vs. Brann, a far inferior team and in particular in defence, to Rosenborg)
  • Very low ownership so offers good differential potential
Alfons Sampsted (B/G – 5.5mNOK, 14.0%) vs. Kristiansund (A)
  • Kristiansund (A) = Glimt are clear favourites with a decent chance of getting a clean sheet
  • Almost recommended him for their season opener versus Tromsø so not surprised in the slightest to see him crop up with an assist
  • The only other Glimt player to play more key passes last week than Sampsted (1) was Sondre Brunstad Fet (7.5mNOK) with 2
  • His assist was a beautifully chipped ball into the middle of the box from an inside position, highlighting his ability to come in from out wide and not just rely on trying to cross from a deep position
  • Good attacking potential and a promising start to the season means he’s hard to ignore for this week
Samuel Adekugbe (VIF – 5.5mNOK, 5.7%) vs. Brann (A)
  • Brann (A) = Their expected goals (xG) against Viking was 0.62 – the lowest of any team (Kristiansund included) in Runde 1
  • Made more tackles (4), interceptions (2) and clearances (3) than anyone else in a Valerenga shirt against Rosenborg (was also never dribbled past)
  • Returned 2 key passes in the 1-1 draw with Rosenborg = 1 more than teammate Christian Dahle Borchgrevink (6.0mNOK)
  • Should’ve got an assist on Sunday and for me he certainly passed the eye test and warrants being given a chance especially in such a winnable game

MIDFIELDERS

Henrik Rørvik Bjørdal (VIF – 8.5mNOK, 3.0%) vs. Brann (A)
  • No other player played more key passes (4) in Runde 1
  • Misplaced just 1 pass
  • 9 direct goal involvements in 14 games last season
  • Got an assist the last time he faced Brann (on his Vålerenga debut in 2020)
  • Creative, consistent and cheap – he’s an affordable way into the Vålerenga team and while he has a lower ceiling than their front three, he is still a very good option to have
  • Hugely overlooked = massive differential
Aron Dønnum (K) (VIF – 10.0mNOK, 33.5%) vs. Brann (A)
  • Makes the team for the second week in a row and the Vålerenga forward picks up the armband without much hesitation whatsoever
  • Had a good game against Rosenborg and I’m backing him to reproduce that form against far weaker opposition
  • Attempted (10) and completed (5) more dribbles than anyone else in Runde 1
  • Also attempted more shots (6) (0 on target)
  • Won 12 ground duels – the closest anyone else got was August Mikkelsen (4.5mNOK) with 7
  • Was fouled 6 times – twice as much as any other player
  • vs. Rosenborg he produced 1 key pass which may seem underwhelming, but he was heavily targeted throughout and will be given much more room to roam against Brann
  • 14 of his 20 accurate passes were completed in the final 1/3
Sander Erik Kartum (KBK – 6.0mNOK, 0.6%) vs. Bodø/Glimt (H)
  • Bodø/Glimt (H) = Very tough fixture but Glimt allowed Tromsø a lot of opportunities to shoot in Runde 1 – better teams will get more success
  • I’ve been critical about Kristiansund’s chances of scoring goals but Kartum returned 15 direct goal involvements last year in the OBOS (6G,9A) so if anyone is going to get the goals it’s probably going to be him
  • Started ahead of Olaus Jair Skarsem (6.0mNOK) vs. Molde and even though he was replaced by him, he didn’t do enough to suggest Kartum shouldn’t start again this week
  • He’s finally made the big step up to play in the Eliteserien and this season is a huge chance for him to make a name for himself
  • Massive differential, cheap and will want to make a point by ruffling a few very yellow feathers
Fredrik Aursnes (MOL – 6.1mNOK, 26.7%) vs. Tromsø (A)
  • Best player of the opening weekend by quite some way – he was magnificent
  • Along with his 4 key passes, 1 big chance created and 2 assists, he actually scored but had his goal ruled out for offside
  • Considerably less expensive than other attacking assets for the title favourites and has already registered a quarter of the attacking returns he got last season in just one game
  • Tromsø will be true to form and have a go at Molde which will give Aursnes the opportunity to exploit any space they leave wide open – I can see at least one attacking return here
  • Linked with Atéltico Madrid and Atalanta = huge opportunity in his career and knowing he’s being monitored by such big clubs will surely give him even more impetus to perform as good as he can
  • Be sure to take advantage of his points potential before he leaves!
Kristoffer Zachariassen (V) (RBK – 10.0mNOK, 20.3%) vs. Viking (H)
  • 146pts last season with 12 goals and 4 assists and 14 BFP to boot – and he seemed to play within himself at times, too
  • Rosenborg have indeed strengthened and look a much better team coming into this campaign – he’s remained a central figure to their attack and after scoring away to Vålerenga, it should be a certainty he scores in this fixture
  • vs. Vålerenga he registered 11 completed passes in the final 1/3 – the most of any Rosenborg player (joint top with Erlend Dahl Reitan (6.0mNOK)
  • Might not have made any key passes or created any big chances but took 3 shots in Runde 1, 2 of them being on target which resulted in a well-cushioned headed goal
  • Viking won’t defend anywhere near as well as Vålerenga did so he should be afforded far more goalscoring opportunities this week

FORWARD

Erik Botheim (B/G – 10.1mNOK, 22.4%) vs. Kristiansund (A)
  • Got his debut goal and in general looked lively operating in the ‘Kasper Junker Role’
  • 1 shot 1 goal vs. Tromsø
  • He only touched the ball 21 times but produced 1 key pass from just 12 accurate passes
  • Currently has zero competition for his place and will be full of confidence after such a good debut
  • Surrounded by talented attacking players who will all be looking to supply him
  • Sean McDermott (5.0mNOK) will prove to be one of the toughest goalkeepers to score against but Glimt are favourites for a reason and if I knew 100% that Glimt would win this game 1-0, I’d be backing Botheim for the goal

Looks like Ramadan hasn't affected him too much if he's come on then!

Oh and it's for Christensen. I would say that's surprising but it's really not.

Should be a 19pt haul. Amazing.

Very happy right now that I followed your recommendation RH and went with Donnum captain. Also got that fantasy rarity of a goalkeeper assist from Klaesson. Bjorkan & Sorli points earlier too so a great start to the runde.

Haha sometimes I get it right.

I did think he was a good shout this week and thought it was one of his best opportunities for points this season.

Lucky or not we take it.

I had torrid luck with captaincy last season so I'm taking it all the way to the bank.

Thanks from me too. Switched Captain from Botheim after reading your piece. With Klaesson as well up to 36 in the world tonight, sure it will drop a bit but out of the blocks fast this year !

Great start mate and I'm glad I can make sense with suggestions every now and then.

You're 13pts ahead of me - it's hilarious seeing how close it is at the top it is because the season has just started!

First big shift is going to be this DGW.

That is going to require some thought.

Pure luck from Dønnum in the end
Vålerenga did not look like i title contendor today.
Bodø/Glimt also looks a bit weak. Lucky that went 0-2 up instead of 1-1.
Molde and Rosenborg will finish top 2.

      I've never understood this attitude.

If, if, if. It's about what happens rather than what might happen.

Glimt were far from convincing but they've played 2, won 2, scored 5 and kept 2 clean sheets. I'm sure against better opponents they will struggle more, but the fact is they weren't playing against better opponents.

Same thing with Valerenga. You've just said Rosenborg are far better than Valerenga - they just played and it ended 1-1. And we had a look at the stats in that game and it didn't say Valerenga were useless at all.

Donnum exploited poor defending - something I thought was always going to happen. It's what he does. He never stops. He'll still be running after the final whistle - he's a beast physically and not a chance he's still in the Eliteserien next season.

Eliteserien is a physical game but there's a lot of ageing players in it and if you're fit, you can play. Ruud is a prime example of that. Donnum can run a bit more and a bit faster for longer periods of time than most in the league. And yeah the second goal especially was fortunate but he rounded Opdal well, kept his cool and scored.

Kjartansson should probably have 3 or 4 goals so far this season - he's got 0.

Again, not about what might have happened or what could have happen but it's about what has happened and what that suggests going forward.

The game didn't become 1-1, it ended 3-0.

It's hard to judge teams from early season performances - look at the Premier League. City weren't title contenders at Christmas. Since then they've won like 19/22 games and have won the league. Takes a while for some players and teams to find their feet. I can admit that Glimt do not look brilliant but the sign of a good team is winning those games you play poorly in, especially against the lesser teams.

They have a big test against Rosenborg on Sunday - I can't wait to see how that turns out. I currently have Rosenborg as favourites for that game but it's going to be close.

But come on, the underlying stats for Donnum speak for themselves as well as his performances from last season. It was no surprise what happened. It was a bit fortunate but he was clinical and didn't mess up.

      Moe (3)!?

      Bjorkan (2) & Sørli (1) I'm not complaining.

I'd say every other Glimt defender played better than Moe tonight. Bizarre. He wasn't awful but I just don't see how he got 3 BFP at all.

And it's got nothing to do with misinterpreting the result or not being able to see how good an individual was or wasn't - statistically speaking he was not deserving of 3BFP. 1 at best.

I'd be tempted to say Ola Solbakken could make a case for 2, but I don't see how Bjorkan hasn't got all three. Still, got the (K) right this week and it's another 3 BFP from my Glimt players so yeah, not complaining here either mate.

Good posts, Reindeer. Thanks a lot for your effort! I learn a lot from these. And I think your captaincy recommendations have been spot on, and very valuable for us that have not followed the league as closely.

One question, if I may. You use a lot of stats that I rarely see used in fantasy: How many ground duels were won, how many times they were fouled, number of accurate passes, etc. You also make references to blocks, clearances and interceptions. Are you including all this to point us to who are most likely to be given the bonus points (which are not based on BPS but rather expert opinion, which may or may not take these stats into account), or do they serve some other purpose?

From a fantasy manager perspective, I would mainly be interested in statistics on shots and on chance creation. It would also make the articles shorter and more to the point to focus on stats that correlates more to fantasy points, than on the performance as a whole.

This is merely a friendly suggestion on my part, and I appreciate and will continue to read your articles nonetheless!

Hi mate cheers for the feedback - much appreciated!

There's a few reasons I use other statistics than just any metrics related to assisting/scoring:

      1) Ground duels and aerial duels can tell us where the threats were coming from in a game when we look at defenders and how that could change in other fixtures - for example if we had a CB who was really good in the air, they'd potentially be a better pick compared to one who wasn't (this also can be used to look at how specific teams play)
      2) I like to look at the bigger picture where possible - if a player is usually dribbling or being combative or getting stuck in, but then in a couple of games those stats diminish I'd be asking why? Positional change? Dip in form? It fleshes out the player and gives a bit more insight into their application
      3) Different Fantasy assets are in our teams for different reasons. We want as many goals and assists as possible but a winger will play and approach each game inherently differently to a CM for example. Look at Kjartansson - CF and has been involved enough for him to score, so if we looked at his shots and how many were on target and where those shots took place you might think 'he's due a goal' or equally 'he's squandering chances.' If he had won loads of aerial duels then surely that's more encouraging than not? Same with ground duels - if he's winning the ball but not scoring then you get more of an idea that he's more involved. I just aim to give as much context as possible - I'd hate to present stats in such a way that people may cherry pick a few of them and misinterpret my point

I am making an effort to be more concise - note the bullet points for the Scout Picks and I'll certainly take what you said into consideration. I like researching Norwegian football as it appeals to me greatly and for me I get a much better understanding of the players and teams by looking at as many metrics as possible.

Also I think even though BFP is the man in the stand, it can help to know how involved the more peripheral players are getting.

It's funny you should mention that about BFP - I'm doing a season long project to see if there is much correlation between bonus point allocation and certain positions, stats and scorelines. Hopefully it will be insightful rather than random!

And just because this is what I think I can understand why people may not agree - this is just my personal approach. Ideally my content is broad enough to be useful to most readers as that is certainly my goal. I'm more than happy to moderate my approach if that means helping more people.

Really glad the Eliteserien has started now because my allsvenskan team is already looking ropey. Content from yourself is great RH. I hadn't looked at the picks before the Runde started but still went with Donnum as captain anyway because I thought targeting Brann again was a good idea! Currently sitting on 59 from just four players at the moment. Probably better than anything I've done on the normal FPL game!!

Great to see him scoring in both weeks - had him at the start of last season but was really cautious about jumping in with him this time round. Good call mate. Hoping he can bail down a starting spot - could be absolute gold.

I had it as Hussain - Eliteserien will probably give it to Eikrem who isn’t even on the pitch!

I think you made the right call.

Both fixtures were hard but I definitely did not see Tromsø scoring 2 or 3 times in this game.

You'll get 50/50 decisions now and then - you'll win some and you'll lose some!

Good to see Totland getting an assist. Operating in midfield in an attacking team. Good for thought for sure at 5m.

Ebiye taking his chances - fair play to anyone who has him playing! Wouldn't have expected a brace against Molde though..

Really hoping Tromsø can snatch a draw here - love how they just do not care who they play, they will play football how they want.

With players like Moses I often try to avoid them because this is exactly how they score a lot of their goals. On the counter against big teams with a high line. It makes them good set and forgets while they are still cheap, but almost impossible to make transfers around.

      1. ReindeerHotdog
        • 3 Years

        Exactly that.

I'd rather spend the 5m on someone like Totland/Nilsen/Dragsnes as they'll always play, potential CS in easier fixtures and can swap out easily.

Ebiye is awkward and takes up a Tromsø slot I'd rather not occupy. Granted I have Hafstad but I thought he had a good chance of game time early on - Milkkelsen clearly preferred with Kitolano pushed higher up.

Realistically when are you ever starting Ebiye over anyone else? Not much and in those games against worse teams, I wouldn't expect a goalfest either.

Yeah good call. Kitolano should be on pens too, right?

Tromsø will play attacking football in every game - could be a great option.

Kitolano could be on penalties. He scored one in pre-season and one last year. Antonsen did however take all penalties when he was on the pitch last season, and missed all of pre-season with a knee injury. It's a tricky call, and Antonsen will certainly start once fit.

After Viking they have SAN/sif/S08 and play LSK after their game at Stabaek.

Probably the time to bring him in barring any major setbacks. That's a nice run of games for goals there.

Yup. Even if I own the player I don't like the silly assists that get awarded some times.

Berg getting an assist for having his shot saved and it dropping into Botheims path for example - what.

It's really easy - just have the assists be OPTA accredited assists. That's it. Not Fantasy Application needed.

Yeah I’ve watched a lot of him his season

Extremely overrated player from what I can see

People say things like “Watkins is a championship striker”, “Leeds are a championship team apart from Raphinia”...

But if those guys are championship players, Richarlison is league 2 - along with his 50m fee

He’s also thoroughly unlikeable,, always whinging, diving, play acting, feigning injury, sulking

      Just a dickhead really

    Only have 7 players.
Would a 12 ph for these players be worth it? At the least I should get 6 pts back (0 for those who don’t play!)
Are the chances not good that I would get back quite a few more?
Godfrey, Dallas and Antonio. (Using ft to bring in Son)

The amount of times I've thought that these two GWs. I'm happy with how my team is doing overall - very hard to navigate these first few weeks.

I had Brynhildsen, then Aursnes, then I had Dahl Reitan but changed to Henriksen etc...

The amount of drafts you get through, it's a miracle you can actually settle on something half decent!

Yeah - can’t complain - and although Henriksen is attacking - I didn’t fancy Rosenborg getting a clean sheet in either of their first two games...

I’m up to live O/R of 614 so absolutely delighted right now!

Nice. I've dropped a bit seeing as I only got 6pts from the Molde game and now I'm relying on Bell and Berisha.

If the CS can get wiped and Bell could crop up with something that would make this a bit less ruinous.

I was just planning my Rich Uncle for a potential GW and my entire squad value was 124.5m..

I really am confused why Henriksen is a defender in ESF.

He plays in the middle for RBK and he did last season, too. His shirt number 7 and he is not a part of that defence whatsoever.

If Hopmark was reassigned then why wasn't he?

The coach has openly talked about turning him into a CB once Skjelbred returns from injury and Hoff is signed.

OK I understand it a little bit more, but at the same time he's not playing CB now, and plans change and he might not shift backwards and there's always a chance every now and then he plays in midfield rather than CB.

That info clears it up a bit more but who knows when that's going to happen, if it even will and how long it'll stay that way.

And now the poor bloke is injured. This GW is a very weird one.

I turned my back to the TV to do something, and he immediately scored. As I came back he was being subbed off with an injury. That's the ownership curse. I'll be annoyed if Reitan manages to outscore Henriksen this week. Hopefully he's fit for the double.
