FPL

Who are the most popular players in FPL and how have ownership levels changed?

It’s been just over a fortnight since our last scan of the highest-owned players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Here we take another look at how ownership levels are changing across the four Fantasy positions to see who is in vogue and who is falling out of favour.

We’ll again stress the caveat that the ownership figures of some players at certain price points (eg £5.5m defenders, £7.0m midfielders, £8.0m forwards etc) may be inflated due to being ‘auto-pick’ selections.

We’d expect these percentages to continue to drop between now and Gameweek 1 and we’ll see how those figures are doing again ahead of the start of 2021/22.

GOALKEEPERS

Pope5.5975.7%-0.7%
Meslier5.01095.7%-0.2%

Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) and Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) are the big movers from last time, each rising over 2.0% in the ownership stakes.

It’d be interesting to see just when their ascent in popularity began: the achievements of England and Denmark at EURO 2020 could well have something to do with it, given that the pair enjoyed a summer in the spotlight.

Everton and Leicester ranking fairly high in our Season Ticker in Gameweeks 1-6 are also upsides to the mid-priced duo.

Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) remains the second most-owned shot-stopper and still sits in more than one in four FPL squads, although his numbers have dropped slightly.

Brighton’s injury concerns at the back and the potential loss of Ben White (£4.5m) to Arsenal are possible factors, there.

Manquillo4.0121612.7%+2.4%

Luke Shaw (£5.5m) continues to climb in popularity and now trails only Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) in the ownership stakes across all positions.

The rise in demand has no doubt been influenced by his performances at EURO 2020, where he racked up four clean sheets and as many attacking returns.

But it’s that involvement at the European Championship which also causes concern: he won’t return to training at Manchester United until the beginning of August and is also recovering from broken ribs, although is confident of being available for Gameweek 1.

Liverpool’s two full-backs have experienced modest increases in popularity amid the falls elsewhere, with even Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) on the up outside of the top ten (8.8% to 9.8%).

The orange flag appearing next to Tariq Lamptey‘s (£4.5m) name hasn’t done the Brighton wing-back any favours but there was a shift underway anyway in the budget defender bracket.

Lamptey and Wesley Fofana (£4.5m) have suffered drops in popularity, with Ben White (£4.5m) and Javier Manquillo (£4.0m) on the rise: the former’s protracted move to Arsenal has brought him to public attention, while Manquillo’s improving ownership figure – despite zero pre-season involvement – suggests an increasing number of us are happy to plump for a non-playing fifth defender.

Son Heung-min (£10.0m) is the only midfielder in the top ten who has increased his ownership percentage figure, with his starring, ‘out of position’ role in Spurs’ pre-season win over Colchester United no doubt a contributing factor.

Emiliano Buendia (£6.5m) lurks just outside the top ten after experiencing a climb in popularity, with his own brace of assists in Aston Villa’s victory at Walsall increasing the momentum behind a move for the Argentine.

The fall in the bulk of the most-owned midfielders’ ownerships may well owe a lot to the arrival of Jadon Sancho (£9.5m).

The former Borussia Dortmund winger already sits in 10.6% of Fantasy squads despite only being priced up five days before this article went out.

He is now the 16th most-owned midfielder in the game.

Elsewhere, Billy Gilmour’s (£4.5m) ownership is up from 5.8% to 8.8% and Emile Smith Rowe (£5.5m) has climbed a couple of percentage points to 7.4% to reach the fringes of the top 20 most-popular midfield options.

Perhaps the most headline-grabbing market move in this piece is the deposing of Ivan Toney (£6.5m) as the top dog in the forwards’ ownership race.

Toney still sits in just under one in three FPL squads but Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) has crept past him, with his brace against Walsall and Villa’s capture of another chance-creating playmaker in the form of Buendia perhaps influencing that.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) has consolidated third spot after some previous neck-and-neck competition with Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m), with those persistent rumours surrounding a move to Manchester City capturing some of our imaginations.

Again, like Shaw, Kane is another one whose rise in popularity comes in spite of some uncertainty over his Gameweek 1 availability.

It’s a fairly quiet picture elsewhere with little movement among the most popular forwards but Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) has become less in demand, with unease over a potential deeper role and indeed the rotation risk that comes with Leicester having a fatter, fitter squad; Patson Daka (£7.5m) has arrived at the King Power this summer and the previously injured Harvey Barnes (£7.0m) is nearing a return.

So are people happy to just stick with the likes of Salah through the whole season?

would it not be better to have 'good' players playing against the weaker teams week in week out?

    For example:
    Salah for gw1 - gw6
    nor - BUR - CHE - lee - PAL - bre

    Havertz from gw6 - gw 11
    SOU - bre - NOR - new - BUR - lei - WAT - westHam - LEE - eve - wol - avl

    Son & Kane from gw12 - gw 16
    LEE - bur - BRE - NOR - bri -

    Son & Aub - gw 17-gw19
    WESTH - lee - NOR

      Havertz - not nailed

Kane - seems overpriced (if) at Spurs

Auba - where will he play? Central or to the left? Is he even nailed?

None of the players come in until gw 6 at the earliest...you'll have an idea on whos playing where and whos nailed...can be adapted to accomodate.

        Just an idea..

Havertz tipped to play in a more forward role...

        Chelsea fixtures
        SOU - bre - NOR - new - BUR

        Salahs fixtures
        MCI - wat - manu - BRI - west

Chelsea will score around 15 goals across those 5 games...(3 in each on average)

Liverpool will likely score 8 - and thats with 4 against Watford...

No I don't like ESR that much. Not convinced he'll start enough. Still young, CAM also a bit out of favor in a standard 3-4-3 where we'll probably see Saka, Auba, Pepe with Laca, Willian, Martinelli as attacking backup. It's a tough ask for him to start regularly.

Not a huge fan of 4-4-2.

Early in the season especially, much better to be playing 3-5-2 or ideally 3-4-3 so you can hop on emerging attacking bandwagons and build team value.

I have toyed with the idea myself, though I am not a fan of Digne or Everton in general, I understand the attraction of the fixtures but I genuinely don't believe Everton are that good a team (let alone a defence) - Have looked at Chilwell and Reece James for the extra slot, keeping a strong bench to cover the rotation risk

Are people over-looking Liverpool's chances at the title this season?

All the talk I've heard is that Chelsea and Man City will be duking it out with a reinforced Man United chasing the pair of them, but almost no mention of Liverpool being the destructive force they have been over the last few years. They were top at Christmas last season, and took 26 of 30 points on offer towards the end, that's championship level form if ever I've seen it. That was with a CB crisis which meant either playing the kids or hendo/fabinho which forced the deployment of a second rate midfield in the process. It looks as though they've done a smart bit of business getting Konate in, and a midfield trio of Hendo, Fabinho and Thiago is nothing to sniff at.

Don't get me wrong the loss of Gini is a large hole to fill, but I think Hendo and Thiago are up to the task. VVD, Gomez and Konate all look capable of putting the roadrunner to shame so the old Liverpool press and dive-bombing full backs should be back in force, and with a point to prove. For me they are right up there with City. As strange as it sounds after the CL win I am yet to be convinced by Tuchel, and Ole at United seems hopelessly dependent on the 'characters' in his side to go out and do the business with minimal strategic input from the gaffa, how sustainable is that model?

0.5 ITB, Bowen fills the 6.5 mid slot until someone steps up in a few GW's. Can get through till GW 4-6 and then WC to get Kane and readjust to form players and new manager selections and tactics.

    Thoughts and critics much appreciated.

    Sanchez (Foster)
Targett, Wan-Bissaka, Coufal (Reguilon, Ait Nouri)
    Bowen, Fernandez, Salah, Mahrez (Bissouma)
    Watkins, Toney, Antonio

Like it - no TAA or Robbo is a drawback, but to fit them in means you won't have this combination, what about Reguilon to Konate for LVP clean sheets ?

Did you forget how they ended and how early DCL’s hot streak dried up and the fact there’s a new manager with a new system and different players and no Richarlison?

We are back at the beginning of the season, the fixtures are so good that DCL will start strong again, to much being made of a new manager

DCL could start out strong like last season, got the fixtures for it. planning on dropping him gameweek 5 and bringing in Bamford anyways.

Really great balanced team, like the double up at the back, Coufal also a great pick, 2 big guns in midfield, the 3 top owned(for good reason, the fixtures) fwds, bar Kane, tell me about the Sarr pick? The only one criticism is no 8.5-10 price point in midfield if Son, Sancho or Mahrez go off

      1. etown

Had 6mil to spend and figured it would have to be between Sarr due to fixtures and I believe he is on penalties, and if we are honest he played well last time Watford promoted, Harrison or Dallas who I just don’t think will put up the points this season could be wrong, and if I was gonna go Harrison I would just find the extra .5 and go Raphinha instead.

Seriously considering Salah triple captain gameweek 1! And no I haven’t bumped my head or been drinking.

    Thoughts?

No Olympics this Summer and opening up against Norwich who are gonna have a hard time putting out a solid 11 with the COVID issues they have going on right now.

Pretty content with this draft until GW6. Any weaknesses? I know the lack of a playing bench is tough but apart from ESR everyone should be nailed, and he seems likely to be nailed himself.

Everton look like playing without wingbacks and that lessens Digne threat considerably.

Suspect you get equal prospects from Coufal at 5.0 and I wouldn't trust Arteta with ESR.

That's the evidence of preseason so far.

Would Rafa have his full. backs bomb on when he has Townsend and Iwobi out wide too? Digne will have some outfield threat of course but I'm not seeing wingbacks and wingers.

I may be overstating this and I'm looking more at formation rather than how they've played it.

There's a hot topic on one of their preseasons that suggests to me that Digne isn't bombing forward.

      2. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

Benitez used attacking fullbacks before when he's had them. Matt Ritchie most recently. If Haime leaves and Digne is on all set pieces, he'll still be a good option.

Your starting XI are all nailed except for Cavani, so one active sub in ESR should be adequate unless you are unlucky. You always have a transfer should any of your chosen flunk. Yeah, I'd say it's fine.
