FPL team guide 2021/22 – Wolverhampton Wanderers: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season concludes with this preview of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After three successful seasons winning promotion to, and then establishing themselves in, the Premier League under manager Nuno Espírito Santo Wolves’ momentum stalled last term as significant injuries to key players such as Raul Jiménez (£7.5m) and Jonny (£4.5m) took their toll at both ends of the pitch.

The Molineux side’s final position of 13th was a significant drop from the two seventh-place finishes they had managed since rejoining the top flight and in the end, Santo’s departure by mutual consent seemed strangely unsurprising.

Former Benfica boss Bruno Lage is the new man in the hot seat. Wolves assets, particularly in defence, have generally dropped in FPL price this year, but could Lage’s attacking philosophy take the club back into contention for a European place?

We assess the Fantasy appeal of Wolves ahead of 2021/22 in this piece, which takes Opta player and team data from our Premium Members Area.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

THE DEFENCE

Clean sheets1014th

Shots in the box conceded29810th
Shots on target conceded1529th
Big chances conceded  6710th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)49.819th

To many FPL managers, it felt last season as if Wolves defenders were underperforming the price tags they had acquired following strong performances in the previous couple of campaigns. It is certainly true that all their team defensive numbers were down with positions falling from around fifth in 2019/20 to around tenth in 2020/21.

However, the drop-off was felt more acutely in Fantasy games as Wolves fell from equal fourth in the crucial clean sheets statistic to 14th overall. That the actual difference was ten shut-outs instead of 13 illustrates that 12 clean sheets is something of a par score in FPL.

As the table above shows, no fewer than six out of 20 Premier League teams kept exactly a dozen clean sheets last season while three further teams kept 11.

For Wolves, both actual and expected goals conceded worsened by about 12. The most significant contributor to that seems to have been big chances conceded which declined from a league-leading 47 the season before to a tenth-placed 72 this time around.

Shots in the box conceded increased by around 16%, too.

Above: Wolves defence 2020/21 (left) vs. Wolves defence 2019/20 (right)

The home and away performances of the Wolves defence last season were mirror images in overall Fantasy terms, with the absence of crowds seemingly a significant factor in the negation of home advantage. Both at Molineux and on the road Wolves kept five clean sheets, conceded one or two goals ten times and three or more goals on four occasions.

It should be emphasised that, even facing disruption and a loss of form, the Wolves rearguard only reverted from being one of the most secure in the league to simply average. They were by no means terrible which suggests that a standard price of £4.5m for their defenders could be a sound investment if there is even a small bounce back – although Lage’s attacking mindset is a concern on the clean sheet front.

THE ATTACK

Total    Rank v other Premier League sides
Goals    3616th
Shots    46310th
Shots in the box28111th
Shots on target15311th
Big chances46=18th
Expected goals (xG)36.8717th

Up front, a couple of statistics slightly improved from 2019/20. Wolves managed two more shots (admittedly a lot less than 1% of their total) and also seven more shots on target which was enough to move them up a place in the rankings.

However, almost everything else fell dramatically and again, particularly at the business end. Goals scored went from 51 (=8th) to 36 (16th), though that total was almost exactly in line with the number of expected goals (36.87), and big chances again seemed the obvious culprit, almost halving from 83 (6th) to 46 (18th).

The news around whether Shaw will start the season is pretty vague.

What are peoples thoughts and opinions? Too risky to start with him?

As of now it looks like he probably wont make it but all we can do is wait for Friday press conference and have a plan B

If the word on him having a broken rib / ribs are true that just adds to the doubt. I don't see how he plays GW1 off the back of Europa League final + final of Euros.

Lamptey is injured, but the will he, won't he return thing that I thought would annoy me with another Brighton player likely to miss out.

However I was informed that Veltmann will switch to right back when Lamptey is out and go back to CB when Lamptey comes back. So it appears my fears were unfounded.

Veltman is naturally a CB, will most likely get moved into CB when lamptey is back, end of last season Gross got moved to RWB and Veltman played CB

They are best choices for their price range for first 3. Why not?

Celebrating two weeks to go until drafting serious begins with my first "serious" draft.

    parameters

    1. Avoid very early WC - hence Bruno who I don't really want but is easy to trade down or across to Kane. No Bruno feels like the likely WC
    2. Like the Son price point for Sancho Mahrez Havertz. Slightly notional which one I start with but Son is the only captain choice for me
    3. Must have differential -illogical I accept but getting a differential right is just about the biggest pleasure FPL has to offer for me. Fraser? Low risk at 5.5 investment anyway
    4. No Liverpool double defence - see that as a call for when form is established
    5. Slight doubt about multiple 7.5s from the off.

    Meslier Foster
    TAA Coufal Tierney (Ayling) (Omo)
    Mo Bruno Son Buendia* Fraser*
    Nacho* Toney (Obafemi)

Buendia Fraser Nacho could easily be Raph Jim/Wilson/Watkins ESR depending on how preseason develops.

I think that’s decent. I’d personally go Raphinha and Watkins over Nacho and Buendia but that’s personal choice. Like the Fraser pick as something different.

        Good spot on Townsend

He's great value at 5.5 - hadn't thought to look at him with my Palace blinkers on. Output over last couple of seasons very definitely affected by Royball where he wasn't encouraged to get up the pitch and put balls in the box.

Thank you. Right onto my watchlist and featuring heavily on it now.

I can't take credit for spotting Townsend a poster mentioned him on here as a 'punt' and was basically laughed at.

But I thought about it fixtures, steady player, rafa loves him, and price. Could do worse. Townsend is one of those fpl players who is 'unfashionable' but ticks along nicely imo. Sort of like Westwood for Burnley fpl wise.
Only issue is amount of starts but at 5.5m is worth a risk.
If I need to save the pennies he is an option for me.

Do think the last two seasons under Roy might disguise Townsend potential.

He didn't become a worse player it was more Palace used him increasingly as a wide mid rather than a winger. This was particularly evident last season when Eze in made Palace even less of a team that broke down the wings and aimed to put in crosses.

              Yeah very good point.
When I think of of how palce used to be in my head if I was to pick a player for fpl.
              It was Zaha then Milosevic/Townsend.
Townsend runs all day the type of player Rafa loves.
Plus I always feel that Rafa makes a team greater than its parts he is great man for finding that unsung cog in a wheel. There is a lot of similarities between Rafa and Moyes in my opinion. They get players to fit a tactical system.

I looked up an article on Townsends signing.

              https://talksport.com/football/914617/everton-andros-townsend-transfer-crystal-palace-rafael-benitez/

              Townsend said:
“Rafa [Benitez] is very experienced. He does a lot of work on the tactical side on the training pitch, he leaves no stone unturned."

It looks decent but downgrading Son to Raphinha lets you make serious upgrades all over the team.

Lots of time to redraft of course but I do like that price point available as it opens up Havertz Mahrez Sancho - any one of who could be highly desirable and otherwise difficult to reach.

Working on notion that it's going to be easier to downgrade than upgrade and I'm highly suspicious of the template variation that is full of midrange price points.

Likely to be entirely wrong but one of my few parameters is to restrict the 6.5 to 7.5 types. Good long term value but not right for my likely playstyle.

Since Lamptey is injured, I was wondering who the best Brighton defender to get would be at the 4.5m mark. White seems to be Arsenal bound. So I did a small bit of research and Brighton seem to be raving about Webster.
Am I right or wrong should I be looking at other options?

Getting a Brighton defender is important for my squad as I want one who rotates with a Leeds defender.

Well I was assuming White's move to the Gunners is a done deal. Lowton? How could I forget that fella. Shame on me! I think I had him one gameweek last season and he got me a massive score. Plus he was only in as a afterthought.
If I get Lowton it opens up more Brighton opens to me either in attack or going the double Brighton keeper route.

I am developing a strong Bias to WC no later than GW4. I find myself planning further knowing something will go wrong and not having the first 3 weeks optimum team. For once I didn’t WC early last year and had my worse season in about 10 years. A lot of it was down to not getting on the right players with an early WC.

      🙂

      This is wise

Experience tells me I'm going to have the irrestible urge to rip things up by week 4. My alternative solution is to take a price points driven solution that allows me to trade down in various areas and hold WC for an emergency.

Bruno and Son can become anyone really with a hit or two - never shy of a hit here. Likewise my 5.5 mid can move into defence very easily.

I will of course WC week 4 (weeks 2 and 3 in the last 2 seasons)

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

The rational point here is that the more willing you are to take hits the less imperative the WC becomes. A minus 8 or a couple of minus 4s can solve most anything?

I will try and limit my hits but self-knowledge says I will stay on the high side there.

This is my current draft -

I made a few tweaks in defence -

Chambers could be White when he moves to Arsenal and Webster could be AN other 4.5m Brighton defender.

    My draft is currently

    Bachmann (Foster)
    -
Chambers - Robertson - Webster (Shaw - Llorente)
    -
Buendia -Salah - Sancho - Trossard (Brownhill)
    -
    Vardy - Watkins - DCL

        Thanks for the alternative viewpoint
Vardy has three decent fixtures though.
        Rested no Euros
        On pens.
Also that peachy gw3 fixture v Norwich where people will be struggling for an obvious captain.

To be honest Vardy was only initially put in because I wanted a if 'Kane does not move' draft. The Kane draft would be Kane in for Vardy and Digne in for Robertson.

The Watford keepers were put in for save points. Plus I was uneasy about the Brighton double up in defence. Is there any other alternative?

In my mind Vardy just seems to rack up points from nowhere. Pens assists normally late on in games as well as teams tire and he keeps plugging away. Him being on pens is big selling point for me surrounded by a Leicester squad that seems to be full of promise. I can see the Iheanacho logic given his price. But I am paying at extra for Pens and assuredness of starts in that strong Leicester side. That is the way I am looking at it anyway.
If It does not work out plenty of options to change to around gw4.

I'm not a huge fan of this team.

Squeezing in Vardy compromises having Robbo instead of TAA or both. Is Sancho going to start in GW1 and hit the ground running? Why Webster over Veltmann? Why Llorente over Ayling? CB over FB/WBs

Good point on Sacho he is a bit of risk. He is kind of there because he is going to be a starter and if it does not work. I can switch to Son/Mahrez/Foden/Havertz easy enough.
On Webster I looked up this article about Brighton and they seemed to be raving about him.
Llorente over Ayling was me just been 'different' for the fun of it to be honest. The FB/CB point is a good one. But I was thinking do people pick FB's because they look more flashy for assists etc. In low scoring games in particular CB's can get bonus for blocks etc. Plus are more likely to wander up to get their head on corners.

I actually would like to see an article on getting CB's v FB's or vice versa in fpl. There is an idea for someone to do a write up!

    Best option out of these?

    A) Buendia & Nacho/Wilson (343)
    B) Greenwood/Jota & Toney (343)
    C) Sarr & DCL (343)
    D) Buendia & Robbo (442)
    E) Toney & Robbo (433)

    Appreciate your thoughts! 🙂

I have Wilson in my starting draft, but atmosphere in Newcastle's pre-season games seems pretty toxic & ASM may be out. Stick or switch?

Similar question needs to be asked with Everton players like Digne and DCL. How will the fans take to Everton?

I’m pretty sure the Everton fans, like every other team’s fans, will be itching to be at the games and will get right behind the team and players.

Wilson has historically done well early on in the season. What puts me off him is the fact that he plays for Newcastle. I tend to avoid them generally. Given that there are plenty of other £7.5 attackers who look promising, I would switch.

Which option would you go for here?

    A. Shaw, 4.5mid & Watkins (433)
    B. 4.0def, Buendia & Toney (343)

    Rest of the team:
    Bachmann
    TAA Robbo Veltman
    Salah Bruno Raphina
    Antonio Wilson
    (Foster Ayling Brownhill)

Out of the 2 options you have listed - A. However, I think 3-4-3 is the optimal formation early on in the season as there are plenty of value options in attack and mid. I would swap Robbo out and invest in midfield/attack personally.

If I downgrade Roboo to 5.5def, with 1.5itb to spend, I don't see many mid priced midfielders that are more appealing than Robbo unless Klopp confirms Jota will start a good number of games.

Can you not do Robbo to Shaw, upgrade Veltman to Digne, get Buendia and a £7.5 striker and play 3-4-3? Have not done the math

I think you have missed the point of my comment. I can downgrade Robbo but I don't see any of the mid-priced midfielders that I currently don't have more appealing than Robbo

Just an alternate thought.. Bruno to Son will free up fund for Shaw, Buendia and Watkins, which probable is the best combination made of A&B.

      A out of the options

Anyone starting with triple United? Have Bruno + Cavani and would love to swap out Digne for Shaw if Shaw confirmed to start the season. Tripling up on a club that early on though is something I have never done and not sure if the best option. Thoughts?

I dont think tripling up is an issue, if it fails, you can always downgrade them.

My current draft - sensible without Bruno or not?
Concerned with White as will he start week 1 for Arsenal ?

    Bachman / Foster

    TAA / Robbo / Shaw / White / Manquillo
    Salah / Son / Sancho / Raphinha / Harrison
    Watkins / Toney / Oba

    Setup 3/5/2 or 4/4/2 hybrid

A few nailed parts to my team - just need to finalise these spots. Any help or reasons appreciated:

    a) Son, Sancho and Pukki (Really like Son in my team and think the Sancho punt could be quite fun)
    or
    b) Fernandes, Smith-Rowe and Antonio (Much safer)

    and

    1) Buendia
    or
    2) Raphinha

Dele Alli is on my list as someone who is bound to take a punt somewhere with week 1 squad.

Not a particular believer in coverage but nonetheless Son and Alli does feel more Spurs than I may like - not exactly a binary choice but close to it given the uncertainty of Spurs.

Week 1 fixture an irrelevance for me.

They have a new coach who wants to play with a high back line, play an offside trap.

    gw2 vs Son
gw3 vs Bruno, Greenwood, Sancho etc

As a spurs I don’t think Doherty is worth a punt until you have clarity over the starting eleven

Aurier is still at the club and if we line up with 4 at the back it isn’t inconceivable that tanganga could start at RB either
