The best goalkeepers for FanTeam’s £1m Premier League Fantasy game

Sponsored by FanTeam

We take a look at the stand-out goalkeeper picks in FanTeam’s £1m season-long Premier League Fantasy game.

FanTeam is essentially paid-entry FPL with huge cash prizes, with a guaranteed prize pool of £1m and £200,000 going to the winner.

There is no catch here, only a €20 entry fee – a payment you’ll make up just by finishing in the top 5,000.

HOW GOALKEEPERS SCORE POINTS

Before we delve into the player pool, here’s how goalkeepers can accrue – and lose – points in FanTeam and how the scoring system differs from FPL:

FanTeamFPL
Playing up to 60 mins+1+1
Playing over 60 mins+2+2
Clean sheets+4+4
Penalty save+5+5
Every two goals conceded-1-1
Saves+0.5 per save+1 every three saves
Bonus+0.3/-0.3 “impact points” if a team is winning/losing when the player is on the pitch+1/2/3 based on Bonus Points System

There are, of course, other ways to gain and lose points such as yellow cards, sendings off, own-goals, goals scored and penalties conceded (we’ll refer you to our ‘How To…’ for more details) but the above table is a good indicator of the main sources of points.

GOALKEEPERS: FPL V FANTEAM

Saves are even more important in FanTeam as every stop is rewarded, rather than multiples of three in FPL.

Take Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m), the highest-scoring goalkeeper in both FanTeam and FPL, as an example: the Villa custodian’s 142 stops were only worth 36 save points in FPL but a massive 71 in FanTeam.

Being on a winning (or at least drawing) side was also key – although the big change for 2021/22 is that players will only get +0.3/-0.3 ‘impact points’, rather +1.0/-1.0 as before.

Here is a selection of the highest-scoring goalkeepers from FanTeam last season and their respective points in FPL:

Player2020/21 FanTeam Points2020/21 FPL Points2021/22 FanTeam Price
Ederson196.5160£6.0m
Martinez195186£5.5m
Lloris173149£5.5m
Meslier168154£5.0m
Alisson162.5140£6.0m
Mendy158140£6.0m
Fabianski155133£5.0m
Schmeichel154128£5.0m
Leno153131£5.0m

What’s striking looking at the goalkeepers in FanTeam is that pretty much all of them outdid their achievements in FPL last season.

The importance of impact points was noticeable when it came to the goalkeepers playing for the bigger clubs. Ederson (£6.0m), for example, made a net profit of 19 points thanks to Manchester City’s title-winning form.

Next season, though, that’ll be less of a factor: Ederson would only accrue 5.7 impact points if he repeats the exact same win/lose ratio in 2021/22.

So premium goalkeepers for the top-performing teams are still better off in FanTeam – but a little less dominant than they were last year.

PLAYERS TO CONSIDER

A lot of the goalkeeper pricing is identical in FanTeam and FPL.

All three of the £6.0m-rated shotstoppers are the same, as is the trio of £5.5m options.

Even among the cheaper custodians, there is little difference – although Wolverhampton Wanderers new-boy Jose Sa (£4.5m) is half a million cheaper than he is in FPL.

Given the strong suggestion that Bruno Lage will bring a more attacking brand of football to Molineux, perhaps that’s more of a sensible figure.

£5.0m and Above

While many of us stick to the cheaper end of the scale in FPL, it’s worth considering a more expensive purchase between the posts in FanTeam.

It’s not just the save and ‘impact’ points but the lack of a Bonus Points System, which the premium goalkeepers tend not to fare well on in FPL because of the free-scoring, chance-creating players in front of them.

Edouard Mendy (£6.0m), for example, boasted Chelsea’s best points-per-match average in FanTeam last season.

FanTeam points per match in 2020/21FPL points per match in 2020/21
Mendy5.14.5
Chilwell4.95.1
Rudiger4.94.9

And Alisson (£6.0m) outscored Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) by over 20 points in FanTeam, which represented a huge swing from the gap in FPL:

FanTeam points in 2020/21FPL points in 2020/21
Alisson162.5140
Robertson150161
Alexander-Arnold142160

Chelsea and Manchester City both had the two best defences in the division last season but languish at the wrong end of the spectrum on the Season Ticker in the opening months of 2021/22.

Martinez has a good chance to get off to another flyer with Aston Villa’s three matches and is an obvious selection for those looking at playing their Wildcard early, as he could be jettisoned thereafter – although his ability to rack up the saves means that hauls could still follow even when the schedule gets worse in Gameweek 4.

Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) is perhaps worthy of consideration for those with a longer-term plan: Everton sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-10, meeting just one of the ‘big six’ in that time.

Rafael Benitez’s reputation as a strong starter and savvy organiser is also in Pickford’s favour.

The save-accumulating Illan Meslier (£5.0m) is also worth a look (particularly from Gameweek 5), with Leeds making defensive strides in the second half of 2020/21 and now with a full complement of centre-halves to choose from – something that wasn’t the case for much of last season.

£4.0m-£4.5m Options

There doesn’t seem to be any £4.0m goalkeepers in the running for regular first-team football, although Mark Gillespie (£4.0m) and the unpriced Freddie Woodman may have to deputise in Gameweek 1 with Newcastle’s first two options between the sticks serious doubts.

Robert Sánchez (£4.5m) could provide excellent value and stands out amongst the best budget goalkeeper options.

From Gameweek 13 onwards, only Ederson and Mendy accumulated more clean sheets than the Albion man.

It’s also worth noting that Brighton play only two of last season’s top nine teams in the first eight Gameweeks.

Daniel Bachmann (£4.5m) and Watford also sit high on our Season Ticker early on and the Hornets return to the Premier League on the back of a series of strong defensive displays.

They conceded the fewest goals (30) in the Championship last term, which included 23 clean sheets.

If City don’t get Kane by start of season or at all who will play up front?
Heard talk of Torres given a chance as Jesus ain’t cutting it.

I'd say it'll be one of Sterling, Mahrez, Torres, Jesus or KDB - but you never know, Pep could even try Foden

In fact he may even give Ederson a go at it either

Realistically Pep isn't going to stick with just one player in that position. He will probably rotate and Jesus and Torres when he wants a slightly more traditional CF, while he could probably play any of KdB, Gundogan, Sterling, Foden, Silva or Torres in a false 9 role.

With Rashford out for a couple of months, does that mean Martial goes back to left wing?

It depends where Ole wants to play Sancho in my opinion. I think Sancho will start most matches. Ole might decide to play him on the left flank to replace Rashford and let Greenwood play right flank with Martial or Cavani up top. Or he could put Sancho on the right flank and let Martial/Pogba play left flank with Cavani or Greenwood up top.

Ideally he probably would like something like:

CF - Cavani, Greenwood with Martial as backup.
RF - Sancho, James/Greenwood as backup.
LF - Rashford, Martial with Pogba backup.

Whilst Sancho only played RW for England this was more to do with differing tactics between wing roles than anything else. He can apparently play both sides and is stronger from left.

Yes, he can play both sides.

I predict that Sancho will start pretty much every match and one of Greenwood, Martial and Cavani will be benched. Pogba will occasionally play on the left and James occasionally on the right.

        Don't forget Jesse.

Managers love Jesse because of his superb pressing and work rate off the ball, so if there's even a hint that he's returning to form on the ball, I think he'll get a stint at RW.

Either way, too many question marks over Cavani, Greenwood, Martial, Jesse, who will be battling for two positions. Best avoid those four.

What are people’s thoughts on Pukki as a set and forget striker? Guaranteed starter and on pens. I think a playing bench is important this season.

He's a decent shout. Tough fixtures, but my theory would be that Norwich will be trailing in most their games so would need to attack. He's at least proven in the prem.

I think he is going under the radar on here in that I've not seen him mentioned once!

      Pros:
      - Has PL form in the past. Has a good goalscoring record. Norwich have PL experience.
      - Nailed talisman.
      - Pens.
      - Cheapest nailed striker available.

      Cons:
      - No Buendia, where is the service going to come from?
      - Very tough opening fixtures.
      - Norwich one of most the worst teams in PL and could easily be relegated.
      - Toney and Brentford look more interesting for just 0.5 more. Many people have their 3 forward slots filled with the good mid price options.

IIRC Pukki got off to a good start in PL but Norwich quickly sunk into relegation spots and gave up the ghost pretty early on.

Either way I don't think Pukki will be in many teams. However it's interesting to discuss these lesser-spotted players.

I remember last year how Bamford was dismissed by most on here at 5.5 last year. And pretty much everyone had Werner at 9.5. I'm not saying Pukki will be another Bamford, but it's certainly not inconcievable to think that Pukki could possibly outscore some other forwards more expensive than him.

Not quite, Norwich and Pukki started scoring, were doing well. He then stopped scoring and they plummeted down the league. Other teams figured them out and fundamentally Pukki is slow. Doubt that has changed

Think they will be wiser this time and so less vulnerable. Also iirc they had an appalling injury crisis in defence all season and it was defence that killed them really.

But Pukki not getting any faster think I buy into that.

I agree that rotation with the top teams can be problematic for the the FPL format. But then again, it's up to us as managers to adapt to what's in front of us. Maybe it means we have to spread the funds more and have a strong 15 players and just accept rotation will happen.

There is a possibility that a template will form of purely nailed on players and the likes of City and Chelsea mids will be disregarded altogether. It'll be a pity if there is no incentive to deviate from the likes of Bruno, Salah, Son, Raphinha in midfield.

It's difficult to find a solution, I'm sure it's so difficult to price the likes of City mids. If there are injuries or if one of them nails down a spot, then they will make a mockery of a cheap price tag and everyone will own them anyway.

I do think in general the City mids are overpriced by 0.5-1.0 (apart from Torres). It doesn't seem right that barely anybody is starting with so called premiums KdB and Sterling for example. There isn't much incentive at the moment to get one of those instead of Bruno or Salah. If Grealish goes to City, it's going to be so hard to justify any of their mids/attackers.

Can't decide on which two premium defenders to pick out of Shaw, Digne, Cresswell, Coufal and Robbo. They are all on course for monster hauls, all but Coufal are on corners/free kicks and are monster at bonus.

        Yep

Can see WH sticking at around 11-13 cs and that will limit "monster hauls" - lose Rice and it could get slightly sticky. Also no Lingz or adequate replacement may mean more backfoot footie - not always good for cs.

All are enticing options. I currently have Digne and Shaw. Assuming Shaw is fit and ready to go.

Robbo - I think Liverpool double up will be too much (most already have TAA).
Coufal - Good option and really rate him as a player. But I'd worry about West Ham and their ability to cope with Europa. They have a thin squad and perhaps overachieved last season. Cresswell similarly.

What do ye think of this? It has an Everton and Villa triple up and an expensive defence. The first bench player is expensive but with rotation risks like Mahrez Stones and Chilwell it is probably required.
Is the lack of an obvious C option apart from Salah another problem? Thanks

Triple up on Everton and Villa is too much imo. Sure they have decent fixtures but they are essentially both mid-table sides. Traore is far from nailed and JamesRod is up for sale apparently.

Change those 2 mids and the team is much better imo.

City breaking with all their smart transfer dealings in the past to capture a player they have about four xeroxes of . . . this seems rather absurd.

I'm one of those considering BB GW1, followed by an early wildcard.
The idea of this is that you can maximize the BB chip, and don't have to worry about it later on.. But of course by the cost of an early wildcard.

Not sure I will do it, but here it goes

    Schmeichel Sanchez
    Trent Chilwell Digne Cresswell Tierney
    Salah Jota Buendia Bowen ESR
    Watkins Antonio Nacho

    What do you think?

Not a bad shout as most people wildcard early anyhow & you are likely to get off to a flyer with a BB on players with good GW1 fixtures

I did it last year, bench got about 14 points which wasn't great.. but I don't regret it.

I got 15 points from a sgw mid-season, when the stars aligned for my bench. If I'd held it for the big dgw I'd have earned 33 (the stars aligned further - luck!). I don't like the chip either - far too much mgt involved for low returns usually, at a point when you should be concentrating on your first XI.

I don't like the loss of the 1st wc in conjunction with the BB gw1/2 though

I'd slim Cresswell down to Coufal and Tierney to White to get Raph/Buendia over ESR

That would leave you a side that could run a little longer before WC with funds spread a little less thinly imo. Not sure it works any worse in week 1. Otherwise I assume you are benching 5,0 and 5.5 Arsenal in week 2/3 which seems suboptimal

Have played around with something very similar and haven't ruled it out.

Have gone super aggressive early in each of the last seasons - in different way with multiple premiums - and had I held that would have blasted it. Think I was on Kane Vardy Mo and Auba week 1 last season from memory -sold up in week 3 and kept on looking back 🙂

It looks like a very good GW1 BB team, but probably not good enough to justify tying yourself into WC2 for.

      Henderson Sanchez
      TAA Chilwell Digne Tierney Targett
      Salah Mahrez Buendia Raphinha ESR
      Antonio Watkins Toney

I’m trying not to tie myself into a GW2 WC this year so this team is to take me a little way further this time out.

You hardly ever have all your players return at the same time anyways so hopefully having Raphinha/Henderson and Toney/Tierney matchups can produce some points one way or another.

      Doesn't begin to add up.

How on earth is Liverpool Henderson 5.0. similar ppm last season but had loads of returns season before when he was actually in midfield and not defence.

      - Chelsea player
      - Played most games last year
      - 2G 2A
      - Expected to be loaned out

5.0m would have been a fairer price IMO but they don't like to go too cheap on players.

If he was 4.5m it would be robbery.

Either I'm trying to be clever, or have lost the plot a bit

    Pickford / Begovic
    Dias / Konate / Wan-Bissaka / White / Amartey
    Salah / Son / Havertz / Saka / Gilmour
    Aubameyang / Calvert-Lewin / King

    Yes, that does say Aubameyang
It's either an inspired pick (3.6% of Teams agree with me, although those are probably the auto-selected ones), or I'll lose my bottle 2 days before the start of the season and swap Auba out to "someone likely to score points"

I think I have 2 hopes - Bob Hope and No Hope.

Haven't does much research into this so ...

Are people possibly misreading Norwich based on their last promotion side. Simply looking at the performance in the Championship they are a different outfit this time. Far fewer goals scored but actually a decent defensive record in championship terms. Last time they came up they were very leaky in championship terms.

Not an exact parallel as a change of manager was involved but Fulham last time were nothing like the team they came up with previously.

Fixtures still rubbish but they did win the Champo at a canter.
