£4.0m FPL defender Tsimikas impresses in injured Robertson’s stead

We round up the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Monday’s pre-season match at Anfield in our latest Scout Notes article.

You can read about the goals, assists, injury news and FPL takeaways from the weekend’s games below:

Don’t forget to check out our comprehensive pre-season page for more information on the action taking place ahead of Gameweek 1.

LIVERPOOL 3-1 OSASUNA

  • Goals: own-goal, Roberto Firmino x2 (£9.0m)
  • Assists: Fabinho (£5.5m), Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m), Takumi Minamino (£5.5m)

Liverpool completed their pre-season schedule with a routine 3-1 win over La Liga outfit Osasuna at Anfield on Monday night.

24 hours on from the 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao, Jürgen Klopp fielded a selection of first-teamers in need of minutes and fringe players.

Takumi Minamino (£5.5m) was lively throughout and netted the opener before Roberto Firmino (£9.0m) converted an excellent low cross from Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m) and added a second just before half-time.

As one of the later arrivals to the squad, having reached the final of the Copa América with Brazil, Firmino got 60 minutes in the tank and will have done his prospects no harm at all with an excellent showing – something that’s not ideal for Diogo Jota (£7.5m) and his first-team prospects.

The second half was a rather more subdued affair, with Klopp introducing a raft of substitutions.

Ibrahima Konaté (£5.5m) caught the eye with his distribution from the back on his first Anfield appearance, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.0m) looked sharp in midfield, while Tsimikas impressed with an adventurous display from left-back and was also handed some set-pieces.

Robertson and Watkins injury latest as Son starts up front again in Kane absence 2

Prior to kick-off, Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) took to social media to confirm a period on the sidelines with ankle ligament damage, which was later discussed by Jürgen Klopp, with his manager’s comments suggesting that he could be out until after the international break:

“It could have been much worse. It will not be too long. I’m not sure if it will be before the international break or after it but, as I say, I think we got lucky.”

Given Tsimikas’ solid pre-season, he could well be a starter against Norwich City in Gameweek 1, then.

On the performance, Klopp said:

“The first half was absolutely exceptional in many different departments. There were a lot of long ball and I liked our formation around that and how we passed the ball forward with Bobby in between the lines.

From a speed perspective, we were exceptional today and Ox was on fire. Fab controlled the counter-pressing situations and how it should be. The last line were good, we defended well and the goals we scored were outstanding. The second half was harder but there’s nothing really to moan about.

With all the changes, I didn’t feel we really disrupted the rhythm so it was good. Ben [Woodburn] has shown up in a top, top way. In pre-season, he’s played in four or five different positions.

Kostas has also shown up in pre-season as well and on top of that, he’s needed as well.”

On this evidence, Liverpool look all set for their Premier League opener against Norwich City on Saturday.

Liverpool XI: Kelleher, N Williams (Bradley 80), Konate (Davies 80), Gomez (R Williams 60), Tsimikas (Beck 71), Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fabinho (Thiago 60), Jones (Woodburn 30), Gordon (Origi 46), Minamino (Henderson 71), Firmino (Clarkson 60)

Where is the CPL back up Palace LB Hannam on FPL? Heard there was a little injury to Mitchell last game so hopefully another 4m option

Hannam playing at the moment, nearly gave a goal away a minute ago.

Yep, our B team playing at the moment but we have quite a few first team squad in there. Mitchell took a knock against Watford but not heard that its anything long term to worry about.

Its going to be a tough season for sure. Think we will "just" stay up 17th/16th etc, depends on injuries/remaining signings etc - we have so many good new young players its just if PV can get them all playing well together.

I haven't seen many opt for Newcastle / Crystal Palace for GK. Everyone going to Brighton / Watford, but are we perhaps underestimating the CS potential of the first two?

Watford have looked poor in pre-season and Brighton are unlikely to be as defensively sound with the loss of White.

Nah, only good thing with Brighton is the amount of solid defenders they have. Although they would’ve liked white stay they love the £50M they’ll be getting. Webster, dunk, veltman &burn are solid enough options

Palace's fixtures are pretty horrendous in the first 10 weeks. With Newcastle do you want to waste a transfer if Darlow or Dubravka return early

There are issues with Newcastle GK situation and CP has quite poor fixtures and they weren't good at defending last season. So even though Brighton has defensive issues, they still have decent defenders and best fixtures.

If Darlow was set I'd probably have gone for him but with him and Dubravka not fit (and both still vying for that spot) I don't think it's worth it

Starting with Jota starts to be riskier. Still I expect him to get over 60 minutes vs Norwich which should be enough to score one (or two). With WC after GW3 strategy having Tsimikas and ditching him out on WC would probably be no brainer. Yet, longer term he becomes an issue if third striker is 4.5. If we start with TAA anyway, then the question is close to 1 or 2?

    1)Tsi + Barnes
    2) 4.5 + Jota

Jota is a gw1 punt before becoming gundo or grealish

Why are you even thinking of using your wc so early, it's the most powerful chip we have access to. Keep it for later

As for Jota, in case you don't remember he is super prolific coming off the bench

        Yes your right and noted.

        A. Veltman > Coufal
        B. Son > Barnes
        C. Toney > Ings

With the second team, I would need to make 3 transfers to get to Son as I don't wont to transfer Salah or Bruno.

        Thanks again.

Ziy definitely a gamble, disappointing first season but looked good in preseason, saw him playing as a 10 which is where he can pick up points so if he stays there, it could be good. Not sure what will happen to shape and starters when Rom comes in , I think I'll give it a week or 2.

Very poor defence imo. You surely want to exploit the midfielders and forwards and you plan an early WC ?

Yeah aiming for GW4 WC but I have 1.5 ITB for any emergencies before that.

Than you're fine. Vardy can easily outscore many "popular" picks. I like that pick.
          Wish you luck mate.

People will say Smith Rowe but he will probably be below double digits score after 3 weeks.

      Maybe punt on Mbeumo

One question for the folks who go with Toney in a 3-4-3 formation instead of 5th mid like Benrahma / Harrison / Sarr / ESR / Soucek / Willock etc. :

Do you really believe that much in a player who has never before played in PL and if so, why? Is it the ownership? If he blanks and the exodus starts, you need 2 transfers to get him out for some 7.5 - 8.0 forward, whereas your cheap 5th mid can be easily switched to another one.

I think especially this year it is very difficult to find a good striker for under 7.5m who is nailed.
I think Daka will be the perfect striker soon but he's not nailed yet.
Many options above 8m are not really promising. So Toney could be a very strong transfer because he's a very smart player who has insanely good positioning and is also strong on the header and has "the perfect penelaty" technique.

He is very promising pick. Hell, he can even be the next Pukki or Bamford. But I'm still having doubts whether he'll live up to expectations. Che Adams is a nice example or Mitrovic. They were great in Championship, yet they failed to produce in PL (in sense of FPL). Even Pukki was good only for the first 5-6 GW's in 18/19.

Unless you're in the camp of people that want to "get rid" of BB because they feel they have to build a whole team around it and it goes pear-shaped, I don't don't using it GW1 makes sense. There are new managers and players about and it can be hard to know who will play for sure. Keep it for a DGW or until you have a week where you can't decide who to play because you have a bit of a benching headache and hope for the best.

I think I'm going to be somewhere between brave and stupid and try and survive starting with one of Tsmikas or Amartey playing each week and hopefully make it to IB break 2 before Wildcard

      all part of the process.

the benefit of it is come the start of the season you've had over 100 players cycle through your draft, you know who the back up left back is at liverpool and the 4th choice centre back at god knows wherever and you know the stats/ what you can expect from various options.

the final template on friday comes will likely be destroyed by sunday evening, but the knowledge remains and that will stay with you for the whole season.
