£4.0m FPL defender Tsimikas impresses in injured Robertson’s stead

We round up the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Monday’s pre-season match at Anfield in our latest Scout Notes article.

You can read about the goals, assists, injury news and FPL takeaways from the weekend’s games below:

Don’t forget to check out our comprehensive pre-season page for more information on the action taking place ahead of Gameweek 1.

LIVERPOOL 3-1 OSASUNA

  • Goals: own-goal, Roberto Firmino x2 (£9.0m)
  • Assists: Fabinho (£5.5m), Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m), Takumi Minamino (£5.5m)

Liverpool completed their pre-season schedule with a routine 3-1 win over La Liga outfit Osasuna at Anfield on Monday night.

24 hours on from the 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao, Jürgen Klopp fielded a selection of first-teamers in need of minutes and fringe players.

Takumi Minamino (£5.5m) was lively throughout and netted the opener before Roberto Firmino (£9.0m) converted an excellent low cross from Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m) and added a second just before half-time.

As one of the later arrivals to the squad, having reached the final of the Copa América with Brazil, Firmino got 60 minutes in the tank and will have done his prospects no harm at all with an excellent showing – something that’s not ideal for Diogo Jota (£7.5m) and his first-team prospects.

The second half was a rather more subdued affair, with Klopp introducing a raft of substitutions.

Ibrahima Konaté (£5.5m) caught the eye with his distribution from the back on his first Anfield appearance, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.0m) looked sharp in midfield, while Tsimikas impressed with an adventurous display from left-back and was also handed some set-pieces.

Robertson and Watkins injury latest as Son starts up front again in Kane absence 2

Prior to kick-off, Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) took to social media to confirm a period on the sidelines with ankle ligament damage, which was later discussed by Jürgen Klopp, with his manager’s comments suggesting that he could be out until after the international break:

“It could have been much worse. It will not be too long. I’m not sure if it will be before the international break or after it but, as I say, I think we got lucky.”

Given Tsimikas’ solid pre-season, he could well be a starter against Norwich City in Gameweek 1, then.

On the performance, Klopp said:

“The first half was absolutely exceptional in many different departments. There were a lot of long ball and I liked our formation around that and how we passed the ball forward with Bobby in between the lines.

From a speed perspective, we were exceptional today and Ox was on fire. Fab controlled the counter-pressing situations and how it should be. The last line were good, we defended well and the goals we scored were outstanding. The second half was harder but there’s nothing really to moan about.

With all the changes, I didn’t feel we really disrupted the rhythm so it was good. Ben [Woodburn] has shown up in a top, top way. In pre-season, he’s played in four or five different positions.

Kostas has also shown up in pre-season as well and on top of that, he’s needed as well.”

On this evidence, Liverpool look all set for their Premier League opener against Norwich City on Saturday.

Liverpool XI: Kelleher, N Williams (Bradley 80), Konate (Davies 80), Gomez (R Williams 60), Tsimikas (Beck 71), Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fabinho (Thiago 60), Jones (Woodburn 30), Gordon (Origi 46), Minamino (Henderson 71), Firmino (Clarkson 60)

0 with Bailey right? The backline might be very short-term, especially if Arsenal look shaky. I would downgrade Schmeichel and Forster and invest that million in upgrading Amartey or White.

If you are lucky and scrape through to a wildcard relatively early with one of the three 4s getting game time, it would be OK. The only problem left is Benrahma is a minutes risk, and Barnes could be too.

Looking at West Ham's fixtures trying to figure out when to go for Benrahma and see they face Leicester GW2 (have Barnes too). Thought I remembered a few goals between them last season. Had a look and see in 13 of the last 14 games between them in the PL there have been 2 or more goals, 3 or more goals in 9 of those. Oof, looking forward to that one.

It's him or Mahrez but I'm thinking he's the more sensible option. I'd want him long-term and Mahrez just for 2 weeks so I wouldn't be booking in a transfer if I do it now, and Mahrez's GW1 fixture isn't exactly great. This means as well I can keep the cash itb and go straight to Lukaku if he comes in at the price point I'm thinking he will whenever I want to.

I'm very tempted and think I'll end up doing it, as happy as I was with Mahrez it's just booking me a transfer and West Ham's fixtures are still good anyway

Reports of Tammy accepting terms at Arsenal.
Of all the teams to go to this one does the least for his fpl value I think. Unless he can nail down that spot but feel like with Laca and Nketiah there’s folks ahead and behind him who need minutes.

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years

If he goes there surely Laca has to be on his way out, probably Nketiah too. I'd love him as an option but yeah I'd be waiting to see if he looks like being first choice (and I'm not sure that's much of a thing with Arteta)

Familiar names to the template but feel like the team and bench itself is very different. Thoughts?

    Sanchez (Foster)
    Trent Shaw Digne Tsimikas (Targett)
    Salah Fernandes Barnes Benrahma (Raphinha)
    Ings Antonio (Obafemi)

Only one non-playing bench player and considering how much uncertainty there is over niggling injuries and extended-rest from the Euros, happy to have good players coming in if needs be. Also allows me plenty of flexibility.

If you have Targett why wouldn’t you play him gw1?

I’d do some lineup tests for the first 3 weeks and see if there’s another option for defender there that is cheaper.
      Or maybe Digne > 4.5/5.0

Otherwise nice team and flexible as you say.

It is but it’s flexible and if anyone is 50/50 starting then the cover is quite good and not having to fully rely on 4.5 replacement, well that’s the thinking anyway

I think having 13 starting outfield players is pretty flexible from a selection point of view.
Maybe Amartey and Tsimikas become issue but we have transfers to deal with that.

Oh selection you mean. Fair enough! I thought you meant for moving funds around, which becomes harder with many 6-7m: more transfers needed. I generally like the team--it's template though so I don't understand asking for RMT haha

Very true but I’m usually one for wcing in gw4/5/6 so the back line only has to get me through till then and then i can wc but if its going well as i said i can downgrade a 6.5 to upgrade anywhere i want

I can play any formation with the players i have. For example 343 with Toney or 352 with either benrahma/barnes/Raphinha. Also if i need to upgrade i can drop a 6.5 player to a 4.5 player. I think that’s plenty of flexibility for me

Salah and Son (plus Mahrez if go with A). Feel like Son will score similarly to Bruno (as he did last season) but is 2m cheaper. Have tried drafts with all three but becomes a bit tricky with money elsewhere

I am with you on that, but think watching the first 2-3 weeks and then decide. Then mahrez and TAA if you a using Salah as Captain is OK. I find it hard not to have Bruno and Salah in my side after last 1 1/2 seasons...good luck, whichever you do.

I see a lot of people planning transfers pre season in certain game weeks. I really don't think this is a good idea now, play out first 3 weeks without playing WC, week 3 make 3 transfers if needed and only at a cost of -4.
I have played since 2006/7 and I always get trigger happy with the WC in first couple of weeks, thinking that I am chasing, then end up buying back players I changed in next few weeks.
This is just my advice, we all know that anything can happen, but would welcome some thoughts on the matter.
I guarantee nearly 50% of manager will WC in first 4-5 weeks, and they won't end up in Top 100K.

Have heard enough anecdotal evidence from all sorts of people about planning, not planning, early wildcard, late wildcard…it can all work or not.

If you want a plan have a plan. If you don’t then don’t.
No need to stress about what did or didn’t work for other folks I think.

I think it can work either way. I tend to wildcard early and it usually helps to get on top of players whose prices rise early due to so many people wildcarding early. The longer you wait then the less chance you have of being able to afford the team you want.

I am a Liverpool Fan, so you could call me Biased, but having watched Jota play pre season, he could be the bargain of the season, look at his game time last season and points scored....if he gets more game time, he will get in most peoples side before Christmas...
I keep doing this myself and overlook Zaha, again, been fantastic in pre-season and only 7m.
They are so many choices, I think, if he makes an impact, then Leon Bailey, who is a fantastic player, is a bargain at 6.5M but untried and tested in Premier league...
Play safe, I would say Gundo, have a gamble but know he will get points, I would go for Havertz!!

He will get more game time, that is guaranteed this season.
He played the equivalent of 11 games and got 9 goals ....
I am LFC fan and I will be unhappy if he doesn't start at least 20 games this season.....

Haven't been around much lately so hello all and hope you are enjoying those summers. Think I'm deciding on these remaining spots. I've succumbed to the Ings lure otherwise it'd be easy!

    Sanchez 4m
    TAA Tsimikas Shaw (White Ayling)
    ___Salah Bruno Benrahma ___
    Antonio Ings (4.5)

    15m to spend. Options...
    A. Mahrez Harrison
    B. As above but Raphinha over Harrison and drop a 4.5 for Amartey
    C. Gundo Barnes (+0.5 for the Grealish upgrade)
    D. Gundo Gwood (0itb)
    E. Switch 4.5 def to Cancelo. Then Mahrez and Gilmour in the midfield for 442.

Looks good. I think Coufal and Creswell aren't being picked enough. I would go for Gundo/Son > Mahrez/Havertz though.
