FanTeam €200k winner Josh Wooldridge’s best team reveal for £1m Fantasy game

Sponsored by FanTeam

It’s only days until FanTeam’s season-long 2021/22 Premier League Fantasy game gets underway, with another guaranteed £1m up for grabs.

And who better to turn to for advice on the big-money FPL-style game than Josh Wooldridge, the winner of last season’s €200k first prize.

Josh is writing for Fantasy Football Scout in the upcoming campaign and, having provided us with some top tips in his first article, he reveals his latest team draft here.

Hi all!

With the Premier League season beginning this coming Friday, it was an easy decision with regards to what to write my FanTeam article on this week.

I am going to do an in-depth analysis on my favourite draft, explaining why I picked each player, and I will even throw in some alternatives on one or two spots that I need a bit more information on.

I hope you enjoy!

Goalkeepers

Daniel Bachmann (£4.5m)

This was a tough call for me. I started the summer wanting to pick Dean Henderson (£5.0m), but it looks like he is now going to miss the start of the season. Bachmann has the ability to make lots of saves, in a Watford team that set defensive records in the Championship last season. At such a budget price, I think he has two avenues to points- and will make enough saves, and hopefully keep enough clean sheets, to justify this inclusion.

Ben Foster (£4.0m)

Foster is the natural understudy to Bachmann. I love pairing goalkeepers together from the same team, as long as they cost a combined £8.5m or less. I am confident Foster is second choice at Watford, and trust that he could step in if needed – both for the Hornets and my Fantasy team.

Defenders

.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m)

Alexander-Arnold is such a powerful option on any Fantasy game, providing he is fit and the Liverpool defence looks solid. Whilst last season didn’t show much evidence on the latter, hopefully the return of Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) can help to rectify last year’s defensive woes. Alexander-Arnold missing out on the Euros could be a blessing for Liverpool, who now have their star defender fully rested.

Lucas Digne (£5.5m)

Everton’s poor pre-season form is a slight worry but I always like Digne in Fantasy games, as he has the threat at both ends of the pitch. I think the £5.5m price tag is more than reasonable, and under Rafael Benitez, you would hope that the Toffees defence becomes even more solid. With Gylfi Sigurdsson (and potentially James Rodriguez) potentially out of the picture, Digne may take a larger proportion of set pieces this year, which can only help his FanTeam output.

Joel Veltman (£4.5m)

With many casualties in the Brighton defence and a few additional doubts, Veltman is one of the last men standing for the Seagulls that I am confident is nailed. £4.5m is a fantastic price for an asset from a team with such strong expected defensive numbers as Albion, and whilst the injuries may set them back, my three £4.5m defender picks are chosen with a more long-term strategy in mind.

Luke Ayling (£4.5m)

Ayling was probably the most attacking player in the league last year not to register an attacking return. He was unlucky on several occasions last time out, and I am confident that he will get several this time around. He also rotates perfectly with Veltman, so it makes sense to pick alongside the Brighton man.

Nelson Semedo (£4.5m)

I was slightly worried when I saw that Semedo wasn’t in the Wolves squad over the weekend but it has since come out that he is merely isolating due to contact tracing and will be available for selection for the opening Premier League fixture. Wolves do not have a good first three matches but Gameweeks 4-7 are particularly strong fixtures. With this in mind, I am happy to pick who I deem to be one of Wolves’ most nailed defenders, with some attacking potential as a bonus.

    A or B?

    A
    Bachmann (Foster)
    TAA, Shaw, Tsimikas (Ayling, Amartey)
    Salah, Bruno, Mahrez, Benrahma (Brownhill)
    Ings, Antonio, Toney

    B
    Bachmann (Foster)
    TAA, Coufal, Tsimikas (Manquillo, Amartey)
    Salah, Bruno, Son, Willock (Brownhill)
    Ings, Antonio, Toney

Currently on A but Son is very tempting and works with Mahrez rotation risk

Had Robbo not got injured this would have been the killer draft:

    Sanchez
    Robbo | Shaw | 4.5
    Salah | Bruno | Son | Jota | Gundogan
    Toney | Pukki

    Steele | Amartey | Omobamidele | Perica

I agree. But would anyday take Tsimikas + 3m rather than Robbo.

With Robbo, you can only have cheap forwards, with the 3m you can upgrade them to Antonio Ings

And me. Did mess around with Toney in a 3-4-3 vs benarahma in a 3-5-2 but essentially i like Toney’s free kicks and pens.

I dont see much of a difference between 3-4-3 or 3-5-2. At the end of the day you still have 7 attackers, depends where you see the flexibility. There are so many good mids. I prefer the 6,5 mids to Toney this season .

      1. Sanchit
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

People often say 4.5 forward doesn't play but a 4.5 mid does.
I never get why people are so interested in 2 points of the bench and would ignore a better asset just for that chance.

        1. Pompel
          • 10 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

Yes, especially since it is normally possible to pick a 4.5 defender 1st on bench which is likely to be better than any of the 4.5 mids or forwards. But in case a new Lundstram emerges in midfield, I guess 3-5-2 is the best option

        2. Pukki Blinders
          • 4 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

Because it allows you to choose a 4.0 defender instead as a 3rd bench player essentially saving you 0.5m

          1. Sanchit
            • 8 Years
            2 years, 10 months ago

You can still have a 4.0 defender.
My point is brownhill over a non playing bench is just giving you 2 points when one of your strating 11 does not start.
I'm okay to let go of the 2 points in favour of the asset I want

    6. Sanchit
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 10 months ago

Why choose players just based on formation?

When actual teams played 4-4-2 all across the EPL, it made sense to go for 3 forwards for sure. That's not the case right now, is it?

      1. Pukki Blinders
        • 4 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

No teams play 3 fullbacks as CBs either… real life formation is irrelevant. It’s all about value in each category

        1. Sanchit
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

          What?!
What I meant was it made sense to go for 3 forwards back then as midfielders were not as forward.

Exactly what you say! So choose Raphinha vs Toney based on potential points, not just because you can play 3-4-3 with one.

Maybe even lower than 10%. Even better, if he gets a goal or two, people won't be even able to get him in as they will already have 3 from Liverpool.

I was looking at Jota's Buy/Sell spread on the seasons goal scoring markets. Basically, he's miles clear of similarly priced players and snapping on the heels of some of the premiums. If that's to believed then he's hard to overlook.

I wouldn’t assume he’s even starting yet, although he may well do.

He looks to be favoured based on pre season but we just don't know.

Adam Armstrong has been classified as £6.0m, cheaper than I expected and he has been classified as a midfielder. He is absolutely a striker. He has become a must in my team now.

Ah,of course he hasnt, that would be Stuart Armstrong....hahah! I will wait to see what Adam is classified as

Aha, 6.0 fwd would be possible.
That's what Adams came in at.

Although I think 6.5 is more likely, the same as Toney.

(Adam) Armstrong seemed to do all his scoring in 7 games last season - a bit like Werner (who had 9 returns in 2x games against Mainz in his last season)

Armstrong got 17 goals in 7 games (Wycombe, Coventry, Reading, QPR, Cardiff, Huddersfield, Birmingham)

And only 9 goals in his other 33 games last season (!)

And only 40 goals in his other 179 career championship games (!!)

He also failed to score against any of Watford, Norwich, Brentford last season - so there’s 3x premier league defences straight away who have the measure of him (Toney scored in 3 of his 4 games against Watford & Norwich)

      Doesn’t bode well for him

You mention Werner, Hasenhüttl turned him into an absolute sensation at Leipzig.
He will also be playing in a more favourable system. It would be slightly naive to think everything is as parallell.

Werner had only had one stand out season in the bundy (19/20) He only scored 13 goals & 21 goals in his two seasons under Ralph

He scored 16 the year after Ralph left, and 28 in his big season the year after

The point is he went from a young winger at Stuttgart with 13 goals in 95 to a consistent goalscorer under Ralph.

Don't agree that he was an "absolute sensation " under ralph

This is the same over the top hyperbole as were seeing over armstrong

He also played in a terrible Blackburn team though and ended up almost top scorer in Championship. Carried them. He has lightning pace, can finish and is still improving. Dont sleep on him, you will regret it!

Players typically score more against the weaker teams and less against the stronger teams.
            It is an unusual take.

So, Mason Greenwood, I can't decide... Seems like the idea that you 'should' have Greenwood for Man Utd 'cover' (if going without Bruno) is gaining traction. I almost went with it, but the more I think about it, the more it seems he's just another early transfer I'm booking. Not even sure if he starts GW2? What do you think?
Also, despite a fine performance against Eve, Utd's front 3 (assuming Greenwood, James, Martial) doesn't really impress me much. Might consider Sancho for Mahrez later instead.
(Don't bother trying to sell me on Bruno, I know he'll do well but I'm not keen on many of the budget enablers that he entails).

I have Greenwood at the moment. The way I see it, he had many minutes in the preseason, and I am happy to give him first two games. There was a quote that Martial wasn't yet ready, Cavani just arrived from Uruguay, there will be place for him, imo, for the first two at least.

I know that preplanned transfers are bad idea, but on the other hand, you have to plan for something, and you should get one or two risky/short term/differential options for the start of the season imo.

Is FanTeam exactly the same as fpl but for cash?

No. I made the mistake last year. I thought it'll exactly be the same and I'll just replicate my moves on that site.
But their classification of mids/forwards is different, prices are different and there are no chips. Points system also a bit different, no bonus points.

It's not the same. You'll have actively manage another team there, can't just replicate FPL moves.

Not sure how thresholds work, so who's more likely to drop in price? Fodder with higher or lower ownership?

I am between Obafemi and Perica, and I am worried if Obafemi drops due masses jumping onto bandwagon.
