Mane a potentially explosive FPL differential in Gameweek 1 and beyond

The Gameweek 1 deadline of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is almost upon us, which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some differential options for the start of the season.

As always, we’ve selected three players with an ownership of 5% or less at the time of writing, who represent viable alternatives to some of the more popular Fantasy assets out there.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

SADIO MANE

  • FPL ownership: 4.5%
  • Price: £12.0m
  • GW1-5 fixtures: nor | BUR | CHE | lee | CRY

Sadio Mane (£12.0m) was not at his best during the 2020/21 season but finished strongly and still managed double figures for both goals (11) and assists (11).

As a result, he ended the campaign as the fourth-highest scoring midfielder with 176 FPL points but he has largely been overlooked in pre-season due to the popularity of team-mate Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), whose ownership currently sits at 51.1%.

In his own words, Mané labelled last season as the worst of his career, as fatigue and a lack of confidence meant that he often missed that explosiveness in the final third which makes him such a threat. However, a four-week break over the summer seems to have worked wonders, as he has looked remarkably sharp in Liverpool’s recent friendlies and finished as the Reds’ top scorer during pre-season, combining three goals and an assist in five appearances.

The return to form of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) could be key, too. The right-back’s quick switches of play via those long diagonal passes to Mané are hugely important in Liverpool’s ability to stretch their opponents, and when performing at his top level, he’s often able to find his teammate at the far post ready to tap home a cross.

Liverpool’s favourable early schedule also looks promising for their attacking prospects, with matches against Norwich City, Burnley and Crystal Palace in the opening five Gameweeks.

It’s fair to say we saw a dip in Mané’s usual standards last year, but following an impressive pre-season, he could be a nice differential for those willing to move away from the midfield template.

ISMAILA SARR

  • FPL ownership: 3.5%
  • Price: £6.0m
  • GW1-5 fixtures: AVL | bha | tot | WOL | nor

Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m) impressed in the Championship last season, finishing the campaign with a total of 13 goals and five assists.

It’s also worth noting that his output increased significantly after Xisco Muñoz took charge, when he returned the 23-year-old to his natural position on the right wing either in a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3.

In 16 league matches under former boss Vladimir Ivić, Sarr scored just three goals and made two assists. However, in his 23 appearances under Muñoz, he registered ten goals and three assists, which suggests that he’ll be Watford’s main attacking weapon again in 2021/22.

Muñoz aims to get his wingers on the ball as often as possible, and as a result, the wide areas are where most of the Hornets’ attacking threat stems from. His partnership with Kiko Femenía (£4.5m) down that side also caught the eye and was a key component to last season’s success.

Another interesting thing to note is that in games when Troy Deeney (£5.5m) wasn’t on the pitch, the two players who won penalties – João Pedro (£5.5m) being one, Sarr the other – ended up taking them. Crucially, the Senegalese winger was fouled on five of the 10 occasions that led to a penalty last season.

Watford start with an appealing run and sit top of our Season Ticker for ease of fixture in Gameweeks 1-7. This weekend’s opener against Aston Villa could be a good one for Sarr, too. Dean Smith’s side have been trialling a new look 4-4-2 system in pre-season which has at times left them a little too open and susceptible to counter-attacks. Given that the Senegalese winger’s acceleration is so difficult for any defender to deal with, he may be able to exploit space in behind, then.

Sarr has established himself as a key player for Watford in recent seasons and with an ownership of just 3.5%, could be a useful differential for the opening rounds.

RYAN BERTRAND

  • FPL ownership: 2.1%
  • Price: £5.0m
  • GW1-5 fixtures: WOL | whu | nor | MCI | bha

Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) looks set to start the new campaign as Leicester City’s first-choice left-back, having impressed at his new club in pre-season.

During last weekend’s 1-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City, the 32-year-old impressed defensively and also got forward well to support team-mate Harvey Barnes (£7.0m). He even registered a pair of assists in the recent 3-2 friendly win over La Liga outfit Villarreal.

Crucially, his ability from set-pieces appears to have been recognised by manager Brendan Rodgers, as he has been immediately handed a share of dead-ball duties. In fact, one of those assists we mentioned above arrived via a free-kick.

Defensively, the Foxes only have one recognised centre-back who is fit and available right now: Çaglar Söyüncü (£5.0m). That may cause alarm, but it’s worth noting that versatile squad man Daniel Amartey (£4.0m) stepped in against Man City and demonstrated that he is more than capable of filling in, at least until a new centre-back arrives, with Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m) reportedly on his way. That suggests that the absences of Jonny Evans (£5.5m) and Wesley Fofana (£4.5m) might not affect them quite as much as first feared.

Leicester start 2021/22 with a reasonably favourable set of fixtures and play Wolverhampton Wanderers, Norwich City, Brighton and Hove Albion and Burnley before the end of September. Encouragingly for Bertrand and Barnes, there could be plenty of space to attack down the flanks against Bruno Lage’s Wolves this weekend, with his full-backs often asked to advance high up the pitch.

Bertrand is an underrated player, and with his ability to contribute points at both ends of the pitch, is a tempting investment given Leicester’s early schedule.

I'm really not sure sorry. At a guess I'd say no, Amartey would start. But after that he will leapfrog Amartey in the pecking order, and be third behind Soyuncu and Evans.

Bertrand looking a pretty safe choice, and he's taking some setpieces in the friendlies too. His only competition at left back is Thomas and the injured Justin.

You're right it's possible, but I can't see Castagne playing out of position at left back, when the natural left back Bertrand is in such fine form the last few.
I reckon Pereira loses his place when Castagne is back myself.

Mad what AZ said on BB about how Tsimikas is now determining the structure of people's teams. It's 3 games, for a player we have barely seen. Who in all probability will score a maximum of 18, and most likely will score about 10-15. Horse before the cart. The structure of your team should be determining whether you can pick up Tsimikas as a nice little gimme imo.

If you're playing 352 with useless striker and maxing your budget, this seems like a very dodgy direction to go in

As most are planning to Wildcard early it understandable why people are taking advantage of it.

Get a few games out of him, hopefully with some price rises. Then ride it out on the bench for a few weeks before the wildcard.

Fixtures over form driving it, there is data to support this being the correct view as well.

the structure of most teams is to have a 4m bench option.

the fact that he can play the first few is a bonus, especially when there are good 4.5s who have less than ideal fixtures to start with (White, Ait-Nouri etc)

now its a problem if the structure is reliant on the 4m.

My team structure is exactly the same with or without Tsimikas. I only have one premium priced player (Bruno) and Tsimikas won't change anything. Might even downgrade Bruno to another mid priced midfielder.
When Robbo comes back my 3rd Liverpool spot will go to Elliott.

4m for a Liverpool defender is a great value, but in a way longer time span than 3 GWs. Right now people are forcing themselves to waste FT and possibly lock themselves out of 3rd Liverpool player to catch that one or 2 CS, maybe an assist if they're lucky. Don't think that's a good decision personally.

I'm probably going to go for tsimi in place of Trent. If Liverpool bang I'll get cleans, if Trent only bangs the damage won't be that high. Placeholds Trent's place for three weeks and ample cash in my team to free up for a Trent move if he looks important

Now I'm thinking about this it may be not a bad strategy. When Tsimikas loses his place you can always get Trent for him & downgrade one of your mids or forwards to whatever value emerges.

Nobody ever is going to want to be spending crucial transfers redistributing money and repairing a dead bench. My personal preference is to move down from a 4.5 to a 4.0 with prospects, but yeah. Two is just asking for it

I think you're right. If you get a 1 week injury in your team, having a 4.5m player can give you extra flexibility and save a transfer.

depends on your strategy. Neither Tsimikas or Amartey are going to be an option beyond the first 2-3 weeks. Omobamidele might play but isn't going to get many points.

I think it’s fine if the rest of your team all start. I wouldn’t want 2 4.0 defenders and a dead 4.5 striker.

Also - Amartey will be dropped soon most likely so if you have Tsim I would go for the Norwich option

I don't think there is a definite answer for what is "too risky" when it is your team.

Too risky for one person could be 0 risk for another.

You won't find too many template teams with two 4.0 defenders though. So it's not going to be a common setup.

I was just thinking about this but he is at least 1m too expensive to make him worth the risk when so many own Salah. 12m for a player who 'only' scored 176 last season despite being fit for selection for most of the season is too steep.

As this article above mentioned, Mane himself said he had a terrible terrible season... and yet still got 11 goals and 11 assists.

Too many people here think the choice is Salah OR Mane, when you don't need to get Bruno if you think Mane can match or outscore him.

You can probably knock around 25 points off what Salah and Bruno got last year, adjusted for the utterly predictable and briefly skipped over penalties rule adjustments. Bruno and Salah will get stung, it's as simple as that. If Mane returns to form and Salah and Bruno remain consistent, Mane will be bang in the mix.

I probably don't have the nerve to put my money where my mouth is but honestly I think the most likely high profile disappointments in the first 3GW are Salah and Bruno getting mediocre returns

This is the gamble I'm going with.

Bruno is obviously a great player and the odds are that he'll be in my team during this season. But is Mane going to score more points vs Norwich than Bruno will against Leeds?

The key thing in my mind is Greenwood and Shaw hopefully providing a cushion to get some points along with any that I'd miss out from Bruno.

Pogba could start. Bruno could be stunted. 9 penalties this year and refs will start overly cautious. More question marks are over Bruno not Mane imo

I completely agree with you, the only problem for me lies in the captaincy options. Not many options to choose from right now, there are also some doubts about Kane's opening fixtures. That's why I'm starting safe with Salah & Bruno and with sight to replace the latter after some time.

I believe that in form Jota can be compared to Mane. There isn't much between them, except the price. I have Bruno + Jota vs those who have Mane + Greenwood. I expect to do better, but it's close.

I actually had Salah + Jota + TAA as me 3 Liverpool players for quite a long time, I'm a big Jota fan but Mane 90 minutes vs Jota's 45~?

I feel it is safer to go with Mane and Greenwood, who should both get long stints in the first game or two.

I am also sort of resigned to realistically wildcarding fairly early on to get in a City player, e.g. definitely Kane or someone like Lukaku. There are too many good options after 3-4 gameweeks that I don't think the current templates will hold.

I'm taking the Jota + 4.5. Also taking the Greenwood +4.5 instead of Bruno. That's 9m I can waste elsewhere.

Mahrez and Barnes V Son and Sarr is hurting my head.

Probably go with my gut and stick with Barnes and Mahrez.

      Leaning towards Son.

Thoughts on this bunch ? What would you change? Is perhaps Toney up front better than Benrahma in midfield?

    Sanchez (Steele)
TAA - Shaw - Tsimikas (White, Ayling)
    Salah - Bruno - Greenwood - Barnes - Benrahma
    Ings - Antonio (Perica)

That's exactly what I'm on. It's the 15m-ish hole in midfield (Barnes Gwood) where I'm unsure. City, Son etc do still tempt.

    I think I'm set.

    Martinez
    Digne - TAA - Coufal - Shaw - Tsimikas
Salah - Bruno- Greenwood - Raph - Gilmour
    Ings - Antonio -Fodder

Bit of a bench headache tho, who misses out gw1?!
    Raph and play 5-3-2??

Is there even a point in such thorough analysis we do. Last year there were tons of posts on Mitro vs some other strikers, everybody had both him and Werner, couple of GWs later they turn out to be awful & Bamford emerges out of nowhere. The same with Ayoze Perez two years ago. My point is not to get to carried away with the template and that too much tinkering isn't necessarily going to improve things as the start if the season is pretty much unpredictable.

Nail on the head. Of course its nice to get a good start, but what we know now, will be completely different from 2/3 weeks time.

I am fearful of not owning Toney tho!

Exactly, the trick at the start is not fall behind, keep well in the pack and then react early to these Bamfords, Perez' etc.

We'll never know less about this season than we do now.

Yeah sure, I like it very much, the point I was trying to make was not to get attached too much to certain players & take it easy as a lot will probably change after couple of GWs.

The whole thing is kind of a self created creature with some parts speculation, some analysis and a good part confirmation bias.

The game is basically "play the probabilities".

We can estimate the probabilities of something happening and then sit back and see what happens, so as much as I agree with you that there truly isn't a "right or wrong" choice a lot of the time, you still need to look at what is more likely to happen.

We all know Salah is more likely to outscore Elnenny, we assume someone like Ings will do well as he historically has.

In depth analysis is helpful to try and gauge the probabilities but the key thing for me is not to pretend you have the 100% correct answer.

Choosing Mane vs Salah or Barnes vs Jota will only be "obvious" once the games have happened and hindsight kicks in.

It might be the most fun but it's also the most pointless time of the year. Any manager could just hit up the template at 5 mins to deadline and be assured of a likely mediocre start. And begin their season there.

Probably even better to start that way with fresh eyes

And any Crystal Palace fans have a clue on Tekkers game time? Really wanna punt on him and CP as a whole with Viera.
