FPL Rate My Team surgery with five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman

Postponements, Covid outbreaks, injuries, rotation, quick turnarounds – it’s the most wonderful time of the year, alright.

Yes, another festive Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek is almost upon us and this one is proving to be perhaps the trickiest of the season so far, not helped by Brentford v Man Utd being called off and six Premier League managers not holding their pre-match press conferences until after Tuesday’s deadline.

As is always the case, the comments section of our site is filled with requests for advice on transfer dilemmas and team help. So we’ve asked five-time top 1k finisher and Scout’s Deputy Editor, Tom Freeman, to answer some of them over the next hour.

He’ll be on hand to reply to comments below the line of this piece and will get through as many as he can until the next article goes up, with priority given to questions from Premium Members if there is a deluge.

As ever, you can chip in with your own opinions on the raft of RMT requests filtering through – and naturally, feel free to ignore the article subject matter and talk about any other wider FPL topics that you’d normally be musing on.

Don’t forget that, if it’s an algorithmic answer you’re after rather than an opinion-based one, we also have a ‘Rate My Team’ tool available in the Premium Members Area, which gives points projections for this weekend and beyond – an example of which is below:

Planning to keep Ronaldo and Dalot, waiting to see if the game this weekend will be played or not.

If I was to take a hit (FT already used), what would be my best transfer?

From what I saw v Brighton, I wasn't massively keen, but it's impossible to judge after just one match. I also don't think Ings will be a week-in, week-out starter, but could be wrong.

for the 3 midfielders - Is that Nakamba / Luiz / McGin?

That formation doesn't support our wingers (who are injured its true)

Gerrard doesn't really play with out an out wingers though, at least he hasn't done so far, they are always quite narrow.

Can see a midfield 3 of Luiz, McGinn and perhaps Sanson tonight.

With the FBs providing the width, Watkins likely to be playing closer to the CF/ Ings isn't too bad an option to consider especially if Ings drops deep to create space for Watkins to run behind

I am no expert but don’t think the vaccine stops you contracting Covid. More that if you do get it then symptoms a lot milder.

This is absolutely all over the news and is top of the current affairs agenda, has been for weeks.

    4. Netley Lucas

Vaccines don't prevent infection and spread. They do prevent harm, especially boosters now that 2nd jab wanes.

      1. Bennerman
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

This isn't true, vaccines can prevent infection. But of course they do not prevent all infection.

The point about Omicron is that two jabs will give you no protection at all from infection. Whereas a booster will significantly improve protection.

        1. Jarnathan
          • 7 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

Can - but largely don't. Look at the 3rd wave in Israel post double-jab when Delta hit.

Also 2 jabs against Omicron does provide protection - the question is all about when you were double jabbed. If it was a year ago - this is different from 2 months ago.

          1. Bennerman
            • 5 Years
            2 years, 4 months ago

Yes, I am talking about with three jabs, the all-important booster. It gives you some protection from infection, whereas the latest science is that you have zero or next o zero protection from infection with just two jabs. A 'sitting duck' was the phrase used by the BBC correspondent today.

All of th above refers to Omicron, I should say.

They don't have enough data to make that call. Sounds like BS to me.

Most likely they are making it up as they go along although I did get covid 3 months after my second jab. It’s the second time I’ve had covid. The first time (when unvaccinated) I felt very rough for a week and then took a second week to recover. The second time I felt a bit rough for one day and took a second day to recover, tbh I’ve had colds that have been worse.

Probably because you're young? There is good data out there, but honestly anything Omicron related is early days. That's really bad luck man. In any case you're probably very well protected given you've had it twice and 2 shots.

I suspect I’m older than the vast majority on here! I’m absolutely no expert but my guess is that antibodies based on previous infection are better than vaccinations. I say this because my partner who has a much more healthy lifestyle, is vaccinated but hadn’t had covid before was rough for a week yet I was fine after a day or so

            2. Jarnathan
              • 7 Years
              2 years, 4 months ago

I think this is about timing. If 6 months has passed since you were vaccinated - then you've got less protection.

False. There are studies which state that two doses will provide 50+% protection against the new variant. I'm guessing its because omicron has the same make-up of the original virus..

I understand it raises protection from around 10% on average to 70%. For those with double Astra Zeneca jabs

You can still catch it and spread it but unlikely to be very ill, or worse.

        2. Netley Lucas

The risk of transmission for a vaccinated individual is much, much lower than for an unvaccinated individual.

The aim is to prevent (reduce) real harm, not infection or spread. This is in reply to the thread starter's question. It's important to understand this.

Double vaccination does not stop Omicron … it’s as if you are not vaccinated. Also it spreads quicker.

Vaccines do protect against serious illness if you do catch it, or more like when you catch it.

Unless they're surge testing everyone, they don't really know. Mostly infected people are tested. They don't have much data on asymptomatic transmission especially with Omicron

Dr Susan Hopkins, the UKHSA’s chief medical adviser, said: “I think what we’re seeing is that if you’ve had two doses more than three months ago, then it’s not going to prevent you from getting symptomatic disease.”

How can they possibly have enough data to support this? It's normal that most detected cases are symptomatic because thats why people get tested (generally). How do they know that there are zero asymptomic cases with Omicron without tonnes of data to support it?

they are just saying that two vaccines don’t protect against catching Omicron, it’s down to the number of nodules that this variant connects to, they are many and different to the ones that the vaccines have targeted to protect - vaccines were quite targeted against previous strains but this one is different.

Think of a shin pad protecting you against a kick on the shin and the only kick you can get is on the shin, then all of a sudden you can be kicked in 10 different places as well as the shin - the shin pad ain’t going to protect against a kick in the knackers

Players get tested reguarly, probably picking up more cases than the average population who might only get a test if they have symptoms? I imagine that if everyone in the UK took a test today the figures would sky rocket.

      Several factors:

Not sure whether to take but of a risk or sit tight?

A Play team below and carry
B Ronaldo to Antonio free transfer
C Ronaldo ESR to Antonio Foden -4

I know may want Ronaldo back but still have WC and will also want Antonio from week 18 anyway and would like City mid particularly for next 2 but……

    Guaita
    TAA James Alonso
    Salah Jota Bowen Gallagher ESR
    Watkins Dennis

    Foster Livramento Ronaldo* Cancelo*

    Ramsdale
    TAA, James, Alonso, Livra
    Salah, Jota, Foden, Bowen
    Antonio, King

    Foster, Brownhill, Toney, Cancelo

    1FT, $2.1ITB

Need to make a transfer, probably Toney to someone.
Whose the best option, considering max price of $8.7m?

Hold or Watkins. But you got a full team and that FT could come in handy next GW.

    Any help much appreciated:

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Cancelo, Dias, James, Livra
    Salah, Foden, Jota, Bowen, Luiz
    Antonio, Wilson, King

    2 ft

    A. Wilson to Watkins, hold other ft
    B. Luiz to Gallagher/Odegaard/Tielemans, hold other ft
    C. Both A and B

I was leaning towards A for now at least, less benching headache at least for this GW — but then again, there's the whole Villa situation. What do you think?

A for me. If you want peace of mind regarding Villa then B and Gallagher.

    This week:

    A) Foden + Wilson/Reguilion
    B) Gallagher + ESR

ESR wasn't fit for a single minute on weekend so I can't see how he starts vs Wham

He was named on the bench and wasn't needed as it was comfortable for Arsenal for most of the game, so I don't think you can read too much into his minutes in the last game.

Whether Arteta will want to change a winning team is another matter.

    DDG(!) (Foster***)
    TAA Alonso Livra (Amartey,Cancelo!)
    Salah BSilva Foden Jota ESR
    Antonio Dennis (Broja**)

    1FT, 3.1ITB

What would you do this GW?

  24. Devos
    • 2 Years
    2 years, 4 months ago

    My team (0FT, 1.1 ITB)

    Guaita
    TAA - James - Reguilon*
    Salah (c) - Bernardo - Gallagher - ESR* - Cornet*
    Antonio - Dennis

    Foster* - Ronaldo* - Dalot* - Cancelo*

I'm willing to play this gameweek without any bench players, because I refuse to sell them. Therefor it's really important to have 11 other starting players. Apart from possible extra games being postponed, these are the players that might not start:

    Cornet
    Reguilon
    ESR

Arsenal and Spurs have nice fixtures (and double or triple gameweeks) coming up, therefor I don't want to sell and prefer to risk a blank. So basically I should just sell Cornet for a hit. The midfielders below 7.1 that caught my attention are Bowen and Gray. Both have nice fixtures coming up. So what do you think?

    a) Cornet > Bowen (-4)
    b) Cornet > Gray (-4)
    c) Cornet and Reguilon to ... and ... (-8)
    d) Cornet and ESR to ... and ... (-8)

Guys this is my team, I have 2 free transfers…

    Ramsdale-Begovic
    TAA-James-Cancelo-Livra-Alonso
    Salah-Raph-ESR-Gallagher-Jota
    Ronaldo-Antonio-Dennis

    I’m thinking both

    Ronaldo ➡️ Watkins (free)?
    Raph ➡️ Foden (free)?

Or is it essential I save a transfer in these volatile times?

    1. PScholes18

Would do the first, saving one FT for next GW.

It would be smart to keep a transfer but very tempting to have Watkins for NOR/BUR & Foden for LEE/NEW

Just Foden or Bilva I would say. Be good to have a spare transfer at this stage. That said if Livra doesn't play you have no subs.

Thanks for your reply but I can’t get Foden for Raph not enough funds…need to do the 2 transfers for that…

My bench is Livra, Hwang and Norman. I have 1ft and 3.5 itb and Cancelo out this gw

What should be my priority :

Norman to either Foden (have Gundo already) or Gallagher
    Hwang to Dennis or King
Or Livra to a 5th playing defender?

    My team:

    Sánchez, Guaita
    TAA, James, Alonso, Cancelo, Livra
    Salah, Jota, Bowen, Gundo, Normann
    Antonio, Watkins, Hwang

Depends what future moves you are thinking of to spend money but Gallagher a decent option with fixtures.

My first idea was to switch Hwang to King, but getting a playing bench seems a priority right now and therefore getting a 5th playing midfielder seems important.

    @Tom

Would you keep Vardy hoping the game won't be called off ?

Also, would you play Raph or take a hit to remove him ?

I'd leave it till as late as possible, but Alasdair Gold's tweet re Leicester v Spurs at least offers some hope?

      I'd play Raphinha.
