FPL Daily: Liverpool win Carabao Cup as Jota and James return

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points of the day in FPL Daily.

LIVERPOOL WIN CARABAO CUP FINAL

In an entertaining clash at Wembley, Liverpool won a dramatic penalty shoot-out 11-10 after a goalless draw with Chelsea.

The headline news from an FPL perspective was the returns of Diogo Jota (£8.3m) and Reece James (£6.2m) from injury, who both appeared as second-half substitutes.

The latter is of particular interest in light of Chelsea’s potential double-header in Gameweek 28, which you can read more on here.

James is averaging 5.7 points per match this season, and a defensive double-up alongside Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) is certainly appealing, given the lack of options further forward.

On the injury front, Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) failed to make the squad for today’s match, along with Andreas Christensen (£4.6m) who has an issue with his achilles. Elsewhere, Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.6m) was forced off shortly before the hour mark with an injury, while Thiago (£5.3m) missed out for Liverpool after picking up a knock during the warm-up.

Chelsea XI: Mendy (Kepa 120), Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Azpilicueta (James 57), Kante, Kovacic (Jorginho 105), Alonso, Mount (Lukaku 74), Pulisic (Werner 74), Havertz

Liverpool XI: Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Matip (Konate 90), van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson (Elliot 79), Keita (Milner 80), Salah, Diaz (Origi 97), Mane (Jota 80)

BIELSA SACKED

The FPL Round-up: 8

Marcelo Bielsa has been sacked by Leeds United after a poor run of form that saw his side suffer several heavy defeats.

The Whites have taken just one point from their last six matches (see below) to leave them outside the relegation zone by only two points. During that time, they have conceded a whopping 21 goals and slumped to a 4-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 27.

LEEDS UNITED’S LAST SIX MATCHES:
  • Leeds United 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur
  • Liverpool 6-0 Leeds United
  • Leeds United 2-4 Manchester United
  • Everton 3-0 Leeds United
  • Aston Villa 3-3 Leeds United
  • Leeds United 0-1 Newcastle United

At the time of writing, American coach Jesse Marsch is the bookies favourite to take over, with the club expected to announce their replacement as soon as Monday.

Notably, there is potential for their new manager to hit the ground running, given that they have an appealing run of forthcoming fixtures coming up, which includes a double-header against Leicester City and Aston Villa in Gameweek 28.

READ UP ON ALL OF THE WEEKEND’S FPL ACTION

West Ham’s defence, Antonio’s creativity, Jimenez benched: FPL notes

There is still one match to go in Gameweek 27, with Burnley taking on Leicester City on Tuesday, but you can read up on all of the FPL action so far via the links below.

Aston Villa, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Southampton, Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers all feature and double in Gameweek 28, with several differential options emerging over the weekend.

    Morning All,

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    Sa Foster
    Targett Robertson TAA Cancelo Livra
    Salah Son Coutinho Saka Ramsey
    Jimi Dennis Broja

will probably bench: Foster, Saka , Robertson and Ramsey for GW28

I reckon only one of the LFC fullbacks, maybe a Chelsea defender?
Also think Coutinho and Ramsey is too much Villa.
Then the forwards - Dennis to fodder - Jimi to Kane/Vardy?

Not yet, but regardless with their fixtures and for spreading risk, I would consider it.

Rudiger, James when he gets up to speed, or Silva if you want to save a bit of cash.

This, great analysis, Jimi is not a good fpl asset. Too many Villa and only 1 Pool defender for sure, cost too much.

I can tell you from first hand experience to avoid Coutinho, Ramsey and Digne at most.

If we were brave enough we would have Robbo over TAA and get Rudiger.

I dont see any points from that front line do you?

Dalot & Maupay > KWP and Jiminez for a -4 this week? This is my current team, have 1.4m in the bank and 1FT along with 2 FH chips and 1 BB.

    Ramsdale

A few of these happened, typical FPL.

Cant believe so many FH teams had Mahrez, he is so far from nailed in PL this season.

It was a joke post, as anyone could make out, I didnt think any of them would happen, you dont get sarcasm clearly. And actually Mahrez was benched, Burnley conceded and Watford got a draw, how that adds up to 1.5 is beyond me.

          Norwich to score: 0pts
Mahrez or (and) sterling to be benched: 1pt
Both Leeds and Watford to get draws: you said Both so -0pts
Burnley to concede in Both games: giving you 0.5 pts for now, as they've not played the 2nd game. It will either mean you finish with 2/4 or 1/4. Not great tbf

Who would you sell for Rudiger (DGW28) ?

    A Cancelo (will lose value)
    B Tierney (plays in DGW29 + BWW30)

Cancelo is the only one where you might gain +1 match total. Even Rudiger might get rotated due to Chelsea heavy fixture congestion (unlikely but possible), so I would not sell any DGW players for him.

I played my wc in gw 26, and of course could not tc Salah.. got 132 points tho. Played FH this gw, and have a decent team in gw 28, but how can i improve this team?

GW 28: Plan is to BB this gw
    * =dgw

    Jose Sa*
    TAA - Digne* - Saiss*
    Salah - Raphinha* - Son - Ramsey*
    Lacazette - Broja* - Jimi*

Bench: Dubravka* - Robertson - Tierny - Saka

    1 FT
    1.4mitb

All of my sgw players have dgw in gw 29.

    A) Tierny > James*/ Rudiger*
    B) Jimi and Ramsey > Joelinton and Havertz (-4)
    C) Ramsey* > Willock*/ Fraser*
    D) Other options?

You dont really need to make any changes, but could maybe do Digne - Thiago Silva / James (I really don't rate Villa's defence still), or Robbo & Raph - 2 Chelsea? But with your team its really a lot of shuffling doublers for other doublers. Wouldnt sell Tierney personally

Cancelo is a tricky one on WC, i think hes is one of the best players in the league and have had him all season

Doing a little research on Coutinho & I've really got my doubts now...
He was excellent against Leeds last time out, but I'm watching the Brighton game now, not really keen on this new shape with Ings/Watkins & Coutinho behind, and I think its fair to say the scoreline was very, very flattering to Villa. Also, stats wise in last 3 matches, we're looking at xG 0.38, xA 0.07, 6 penalty area touches & an uninspiring heatmap with touches concentrated in the middle third

        Salah Foden Gallagher JWP Bowen

I want to bring in some Villa, Sou & Chelsea players in ahead of GW28 doubles. Potentially Sa for Pope so I have 2 back to back double GW Gks for 28/29.

This, people actually think Jimi is 2nd choice now, hes as nailed as possible for both games in DGW28, not that I'm interested in buying him anyway.

Would you play WC with this team or take a few hits?

    Sanchez / DDG
    TAA / Reguilon / Cancelo / Coady / Dalot
    Salah / Saka / Bowen / JWP / Brownhill
    Kane / Dennis / Weghorst

    1FT and 0.2m itb

The players I would look to change.

      Sanchez/DDG/Dalot/Brownhill/Dennis/Weghorst. Even Bowen.

      So ya, I'd wildcard.

You can always get by without a hit, but now looks like a good time to do the wildcard.

I know BB is team dependent and all, but if I'm looking to get the most out of it, will there be a GW better than 36 of the weeks that remain? Any other possible GW where I can BB doublers?

I'm doing it this week. Dont want to wait til 36/7 as a lot of teams will have nothing to play for & will likely rotate heavily in DGWs

Aw, thanks 🙂 Probably cos I've really been putting the research lately & watching 4-5 full games a week.

          BB is:
          Sanchez, Ait Nouri, Broja, Jiménez.

          Rest of team pre-transfers:
          Sa
          TAA Robbo Cancelo Tierney
          Salah Saka Martinell Bowen Raphinha
          Kane

Almost every time, you will actually bench boost single gameweekers (as you would want to start your doublers). But if you wanna do the old school wildcard + bench boost, then from what I hear yes 36 will be the biggest. But rotation will be rife.

Always tricky with BB DGW as you said rotation, injury etc. so my opinion is to take the first chance when it looks fine

          • 8 Years

Yeah, I agreed. I think I will bench boost in 29, since both my gks double then. It will be Sanchez (LIV, TOT), Bowen (AVL) Ramsey (whu) Emerson (mun, bha - I might sell if he doesn't start next). It's not sexy, but I'm expecting around 15 points and then I can trim my bench to where it should be.

Doing this week, it's obvious chance to get rid of BB. Then focus to starting XI with 2FH in hand for any big DGWs.

Cheers lads. Appreciate the replies. Sound logic that BB in 36 could be risky. Can't do it this week as my bench will have Bowen, Mee and co. Might do it when the opportunity presents, even with SGWers. Cheers.

What are the obvious picks you intend to have/keep on WC?

Sticking with Cancelo and TAA? Tbh can’t imagine not having them along Salah. Possibly Kane in the mix as the only premium striker worth considering?

    1. Bunk Moreland
      • 8 Years

Cancelo is a 100% stick. Trent is an amazing pick, but so expensive now that it *might* be worth getting James and upgrading elsewhere. Depends if you really fancy players like Son to outscore players like Bowen, Raphinha and Coutinho.

    Morning all,

    Would you wildcard this team?

    DDG / Bachman
TAA / Cancelo / tierney / Emerson royal / Williams
    Salah / saka / Bowen / son / Ramsey
    Dennis / Ronaldo / broja

Alternative would be a -4 to get in foster and Jimenez giving me 5 doubles next week

    1. Bunk Moreland
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

Taking -4 for your sub gk when you still have a wildcard seems meh...

How many picks would you change on a wildcard? How many of those actually have a good matchup this week?

      1. ShaunGoater123
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

yeah it is a bit off taking a -4 for that.

In terms of number of picks, i'd probably change DDG, Bachmann, Royal, Bowen, Dennis, Ronaldo at a minimum

        1. Bunk Moreland
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 2 months ago

It's enough to wildcard. Just to get Ron out of the team and redistribute the funds, would be worth a lot .

But it also depends on your chip strategy throughout.

Maybe, if u still have bench boost, you can set up a wildcard that has two gks that double in 29 and at least one that plays in 30. So u can use that chip in 29, which is also a double (And Chelsea has a great fixture).

Probably looking at the following team:

            Ramsdale, Foster
            Cancelo, TAA, Tierney, James, Saiss
            Son, Salah, Coutinho, Raphinha, Saka
            Broja, Wood, Jimenez.

            Would give me:
            7 x DGW28
            7 x DGW29
            8 players minimum for 30 with 1FT.

    Thoughts on this FH team?

    Sa
    Rudiger Saiss Coady

    Adams Joelinton

If Chelsea are confirmed to have a dgw

    1. Bunk Moreland

Some good picks like Coutinho and Mount.

Joelinton is a CM now, isnt he? Not sure about him and Fraser. Seems a waste to not triple up on Chelsea if you are free hitting, you should take Alonso or James. Though my pick would be Kai.
