FPL Daily: Liverpool win Carabao Cup as Jota and James return

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points of the day in FPL Daily.

LIVERPOOL WIN CARABAO CUP FINAL

In an entertaining clash at Wembley, Liverpool won a dramatic penalty shoot-out 11-10 after a goalless draw with Chelsea.

The headline news from an FPL perspective was the returns of Diogo Jota (£8.3m) and Reece James (£6.2m) from injury, who both appeared as second-half substitutes.

The latter is of particular interest in light of Chelsea’s potential double-header in Gameweek 28, which you can read more on here.

James is averaging 5.7 points per match this season, and a defensive double-up alongside Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) is certainly appealing, given the lack of options further forward.

On the injury front, Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) failed to make the squad for today’s match, along with Andreas Christensen (£4.6m) who has an issue with his achilles. Elsewhere, Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.6m) was forced off shortly before the hour mark with an injury, while Thiago (£5.3m) missed out for Liverpool after picking up a knock during the warm-up.

Chelsea XI: Mendy (Kepa 120), Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Azpilicueta (James 57), Kante, Kovacic (Jorginho 105), Alonso, Mount (Lukaku 74), Pulisic (Werner 74), Havertz

Liverpool XI: Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Matip (Konate 90), van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson (Elliot 79), Keita (Milner 80), Salah, Diaz (Origi 97), Mane (Jota 80)

BIELSA SACKED

The FPL Round-up: 8

Marcelo Bielsa has been sacked by Leeds United after a poor run of form that saw his side suffer several heavy defeats.

The Whites have taken just one point from their last six matches (see below) to leave them outside the relegation zone by only two points. During that time, they have conceded a whopping 21 goals and slumped to a 4-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 27.

LEEDS UNITED’S LAST SIX MATCHES:
  • Leeds United 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur
  • Liverpool 6-0 Leeds United
  • Leeds United 2-4 Manchester United
  • Everton 3-0 Leeds United
  • Aston Villa 3-3 Leeds United
  • Leeds United 0-1 Newcastle United

At the time of writing, American coach Jesse Marsch is the bookies favourite to take over, with the club expected to announce their replacement as soon as Monday.

Notably, there is potential for their new manager to hit the ground running, given that they have an appealing run of forthcoming fixtures coming up, which includes a double-header against Leicester City and Aston Villa in Gameweek 28.

READ UP ON ALL OF THE WEEKEND’S FPL ACTION

West Ham’s defence, Antonio’s creativity, Jimenez benched: FPL notes

There is still one match to go in Gameweek 27, with Burnley taking on Leicester City on Tuesday, but you can read up on all of the FPL action so far via the links below.

Aston Villa, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Southampton, Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers all feature and double in Gameweek 28, with several differential options emerging over the weekend.

To be fair, you asked then didn't like the answer? haha

A lot of your team are either doubling or are "premium" players.

Only thing I think would be is Tierney or Reg to a Chelsea def? Not sure who you'd get for those prices though - ALonso?

Prepared to take my first hit in a good while this week.

    A) Dalot and Weghorst to Digne and Jimenez
    B) Weghorst and Cancelo to Kane and 4.9m def (taking Cancelo out is risky, but they have no imminent doubles, just feel like it is the time for Kane)

So is WCing the popular move now with Chelsea likely getting a DGW? I was tempted to WC before this news… this is my team as it stands.

    Ramsdale
    Livramento Cancelo TAA
    Bowen Son Salah Foden
    Weghorst Broja Dennis

    Sanchez Cornet Dalot Coufal

Have WC, 2xFH and BB remaining.

I'm building a perfect FH team, then seeing how many of them I'd be happy with keeping mid/long-term.

    FH28 or WC28?
I have 2FHs, WC and BB.

FH team would get 10 DGWers, and probably leave out Cancelo, Bowen etc.
WC would obviously keep the above but means fewer DGWers.

    Example FH team :
    Sa*
    TAA RAN* Digne*
    Cout* Raph* Salah JWP*
    Jimenez* ASM* Broja*
    Livra* Son James

Havertz. I am so tempted to do it.

Might even captain him. He's played 5 consecutive competitive games for Chelsea. If he's rested vs Luton Town I think I'll do it. He can play upfront or on the right if Lukaku starts which makes him pretty nailed for a Chelsea attacker. If Ziyech is still injured that just makes it even more tempting. He played really well in both of the last two games from an eye test perspective too.

Lille he could have had a hat-trick in the first 15 minutes. Last night, disallowed goal and a great assist for Mount to miss a sitter.

    Havertz (c) redemption.

I’d say Rudiger or Saiss will be a good bet to score big but you’ll want Tierney back for GW29 so might be best to stick with what you’ve planned.

The doubles seem to be now and then near the end. At the end there migh be more rotation if not much to play for. Also you only have the WC for say 3 GW's.

FOr that reason i'm wilcarding now for these doubles and to be fair, a lot of those teams could play GW30 and also have decent enough fixtures until later on so a few hits will get it sorted (or use a FH on some weeks)

but for this week, James is too risky for rotation. I will get James after GW30. My point was whether Chalobah is a rotation risk if Christensen and Azpi are injured

Could easily be Sarr in the back 3 and ALonso at LB?

Chalobah is a big risk. I doubt he will play both.

I'm selling DDG and Bruno this week for Mendy and Salah so expect a 3-0 (Bruno hattrick) win for United in the Manchester derby!

Are there a better gw to TC than 29? Salah (Brighton and Arsenal away)

Had to wc in gw 26...

I probably will on the basis that it is a solid week to play it - both teams tought defensively but it is Salah. If 'pool progress on Wednesday, their postponed fixture is vs United, so a double MUN & TOT would be on the cards in 36 (I think - trust Crellin over me).

Otherwise you're punting on someone else.

      Naw, I wouldn't.

Right players to shift; not great replacements.

Maybe Mount? Or Coutinho? JWP? I'd be looking to invest as little value in forwards as poss (unless going big for Kane) - I'm keeping my front three super lightweight and cheap, and only playing one (Broja, Toney, Hwang - ASM if he's fit again soon).

Only 11% playing FH on the poll this week. I must be doing something wrong then.

Only 1 doubler, though (Dennis!) and I want some action. My team is pretty well set up for the medium term so if I WCed, I'd be making only 1 change in each position.

    Thoughts on WC Draft

    Sa Foster
    Rudiger TAA Cancelo Tierney Bednarek
    Salah Jota JWP Mount Coutinho
    Jimenez Dennis Broja

    1. WVA

Coutinho not worth the extra cash over Ramsey.
      Willock over JWP.
      Try and get Kane?

        Good shout on Ramsey.

Kane would be ideal, just need to choose defenders wisely.

        Current defence is:

        VVD TAA Cancelo Tierney Mee

Mee to Rudiger means defence is high value, but not sure who to sacrifice to create Kane funds.

Personally think mo and two pool defenders is they way to go. Diaz looks undropable at the moment but going to be hard for klopp to play all four attackers , there is going to be rotation between mane, jota and diaz

Good point on Jota….I currently have VVD TAA & Salah, may be worth sticking with those 3.

Defenders and GKs looking good. Maaaybe look to do Bed --> Coady at some point?

Jota for Son? No MCI is a stressful route to take haha but I think I'm with you on avoiding it.

Frontline looks fine - maybe Dennis to ASM if he's fit. Super Saints' Willock shout is a good one.

Son could be easier to get into my team than Kane.

Yeh Willock seems a good short term shout with the DGW.

-8 to bring in 2 defenders and a keeper, all who have DGW this week (DDG, Veltman, Cancelo -> Sa, Targett, Rudiger). Yay or nay?

IF there are only 3 fixtures in GW30

    Wolves v Leeds
    Villa v Arsenal
    Leicester v Brentford

Would you be happy playing with 6 players? e.g. Ramsdale, Kilman, Maddison, Saka, Laca, Jiminez

    1. Holmes

for sure, even 4-5 should be enough

3 of those teams are dross. 2 decent one are against each other. Having 2-3 Wolves should reduce the damage

      Saka Maddison Coutinho
      Jimenez Toney Daka

    A. Steele to Dubravka
    B. DDG to Mendy

    DDG Steele
    TAA Cancelo Tierney Digne Liv
    Salah Son Coutinho Bowen Saka
    Antonio Weghorst Broja

Mendy leaves me with no GK in 30, i do have both free hits but am still sure whether that game week warrants it.

you are probably going to WC soon, so bet on Sa for next few weeks. De Gea is of no use for next 3 GWs, so better to change him.

My first WC draft, hoping to see me through the next 3 GW’s with enough players with double gameweeks and enough in BGW30…

    Sa Foster
    TAA Rudiger Saiss Digne White
    Salah Coutinho Saka Ramsey Raphinha
    Kane Jiminez Broja

    Thanks

I think that looks very good. Though the Cout/Ramsey double up might be too much investment in Villa? Could you stretch Coutinho to Son? Would prefer a Spurs double up at the moment.

Thanks. I could maybe switch him to Kulu? Obviously the benefit of Coutinho is he plays GW30 too…

Going Kulu over Coutinho would mean I could upgrade Broja to Adams (if that is considered an upgrade)

The only thing I am not convinced is double Villa mids. My first draft looks similar though:

      Sa - Foster
      Rudiger - TAA - Cancelo - White - Kilman
      Saka - Maddison - Salah - Ramsey - Raphinha
      Kane - Adams - ASM

      What do you think?
