FPL Daily: Liverpool win Carabao Cup as Jota and James return

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points of the day in FPL Daily.

LIVERPOOL WIN CARABAO CUP FINAL

In an entertaining clash at Wembley, Liverpool won a dramatic penalty shoot-out 11-10 after a goalless draw with Chelsea.

The headline news from an FPL perspective was the returns of Diogo Jota (£8.3m) and Reece James (£6.2m) from injury, who both appeared as second-half substitutes.

The latter is of particular interest in light of Chelsea’s potential double-header in Gameweek 28, which you can read more on here.

James is averaging 5.7 points per match this season, and a defensive double-up alongside Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) is certainly appealing, given the lack of options further forward.

On the injury front, Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) failed to make the squad for today’s match, along with Andreas Christensen (£4.6m) who has an issue with his achilles. Elsewhere, Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.6m) was forced off shortly before the hour mark with an injury, while Thiago (£5.3m) missed out for Liverpool after picking up a knock during the warm-up.

Chelsea XI: Mendy (Kepa 120), Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Azpilicueta (James 57), Kante, Kovacic (Jorginho 105), Alonso, Mount (Lukaku 74), Pulisic (Werner 74), Havertz

Liverpool XI: Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Matip (Konate 90), van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson (Elliot 79), Keita (Milner 80), Salah, Diaz (Origi 97), Mane (Jota 80)

BIELSA SACKED

The FPL Round-up: 8

Marcelo Bielsa has been sacked by Leeds United after a poor run of form that saw his side suffer several heavy defeats.

The Whites have taken just one point from their last six matches (see below) to leave them outside the relegation zone by only two points. During that time, they have conceded a whopping 21 goals and slumped to a 4-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 27.

LEEDS UNITED’S LAST SIX MATCHES:
  • Leeds United 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur
  • Liverpool 6-0 Leeds United
  • Leeds United 2-4 Manchester United
  • Everton 3-0 Leeds United
  • Aston Villa 3-3 Leeds United
  • Leeds United 0-1 Newcastle United

At the time of writing, American coach Jesse Marsch is the bookies favourite to take over, with the club expected to announce their replacement as soon as Monday.

Notably, there is potential for their new manager to hit the ground running, given that they have an appealing run of forthcoming fixtures coming up, which includes a double-header against Leicester City and Aston Villa in Gameweek 28.

READ UP ON ALL OF THE WEEKEND’S FPL ACTION

West Ham’s defence, Antonio’s creativity, Jimenez benched: FPL notes

There is still one match to go in Gameweek 27, with Burnley taking on Leicester City on Tuesday, but you can read up on all of the FPL action so far via the links below.

Aston Villa, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Southampton, Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers all feature and double in Gameweek 28, with several differential options emerging over the weekend.

Core of the team looks decent, I reckon. The frontline is a weak, but probably only going to play 1 upfront anyway.

    Foster | Ramsdale
    Cancelo | Coady | Digne | Mee | TAA
    Bowen | Ramsey | Son | Salah | Sterling
    Broja | Dennis | Toney

Thinking Mee --> Tilva, Dennis --> Hwang, & Bowen --> Saka (in that order of priority) over the next couple of rounds. Should set me up nicely for the coming GWs. Intention is to WC33, BB36, and use last FH if/when a good DGW presents itself - or in an emergency.

Loose plan that'll inevitably change - but what're people's thoughts? Any glaring errors?

Yeah it's fine. I had no way to get Son, who was my captain. And this also saved me from buying Weghorst in GW27.

Thanks 🙂 Yer, definitely a possibility. Was thinking of keeping Toney as he plays in GW30. Whoever I have striker-wise is probs just gonna sit on the bench with Broja default starter.

Keeping deadweight just so they can get 2 points in GW30 doesn't make sense to me.

I'd rather score well for a few weeks and get a small red in 30 but have good players the other side of the blank. The other benefit is that if you have a team that is bad for GW30, it's a team that is good for GW36 and any other subsequent doubles.

Would you BB the following GW28?

    Foster Lacazette White Bowen

With pricier picks coming back to form (Kane, Bruno etc) I quite like the prospect of being able to get BB out of the way and then WC 31/32/33 into a team with a cheap bench.

Bowen fixture is a problem for sure but at least he’s capable.

I feel like Arsenal have been more predictable this season - have tended to win when expected and then get beat by the top teams.

Well I put in that extra context that I'd have to bench Saka or King. Raphinha's fixtures are really nice though and being on pens with those games he has and Daniel James dancing around is quite tempting.

Good stuff. I did look at RMT for GW27 and didnt see much gain, one of many reason I didnt FH. Basically only player that hurt was Kane but Foden and Dawson matching freehitters pretty much. This week Im torn between FH and WC, will decide later this week, when known who blanks GW30.

Yes old team RMT (after the hit I was considering) was 44.97, FH team 68.02. Current FH score 55 with Pope, Mee and Weghorst (c) to come, so need a CS or attacking return to reach predicted score.

Dont think it like that. If you sell a player it’s only -4 and the points he might get, 2 minimum so the player you get in needs to score 6 to break even, then think same for next 3 moves

Unless we get a raft of midweek shocks, I would absolutely do a FH in 28 ahead of 30. Only reason for a FH in 30 is that you probably don't want Villa and Brentford (maybe Leicester) longer term

I'm dropping a WC because I want to be set up for 29 and 30 as much as possible, as well as 28. I have one FH left

      Im doing either:
      A) FH28, no chip 29 (6 DGW players with 1 hit maybe), FH30(have very few players), save WC and BB for later
      B) WC28, BB29(most likely),no chip 30, Have 2xFH for later, maybe 33/36 depending on how it pans out.
What do you think is better?

I imagine most who have a FH left will use it in 30, however the more I look at it the more I feel the ceiling could be higher in a standard game week from 31-38.

I was thinking of BB 29 (probably won't because still have TC and think 29 will be Salah's best remaining double). However, from the doublers, I doubt you want Brighton or Everton stinking up your team - poor doubles and not great fixtures either side. None of Arsenal, Newcastle or Spurs have easy doubles.

For me main benefit of BB 29 is a WC before allowing you to target it, plus get it out of the way and be able to bring some cheap fodder and maximise the money spent on a core 12-13 players. BB in 36 could be more lucrative but if you WC in 28 you need to hope you can work it on transfers and hits.

Yeh I agree about a BB just after a WC. Think it helps maximise potential returns and then have fodder on the bench to bring in an extra premium for the end of season run in.

        I was initially planning

        28 WC
        29 BB
        30 FH

KWP more nailed than Livra, but likely similar points. So if you're looking at Amartey (who I am not 100% sure how first choice he is) playing 3 in the same period Scharr has 4 games, with potential for a 5th

Is the £0.5m (ish) being spent better than having a double doubler from a side who are actually looking reasonably solid at the back?

If keep livra my WC team-
            Sa
            Coady rudiger & livra
Coutinho salah mount/havertz (switch to son GW29) Wilcock raphinha
            Kane Adams
            Subs foster Kane gelhart Schar.

What are peoples thoughts on Coutinho as captain?

Since I brought him in he's got 2, 2, 3 but his DGW fixtures are phenomenal!

      (Repost...)
Doing a little research on Coutinho & I've really got my doubts now... He was excellent against Leeds last time out, but I'm watching the Brighton game now, not really keen on this new shape with Ings/Watkins & Coutinho behind, and I think its fair to say the scoreline was very, very flattering to Villa. Also, stats wise in last 3 matches, we're looking at xG 0.38, xA 0.07, 6 penalty area touches & an uninspiring heatmap with touches concentrated in the middle third

Having strong doubts too which is frustrating as he would be a great dif in my mini leagues. Typical he's flopped the moment I brought him in nice and early.

Coutinho came into picture as fpl asset after his haul vs Leeds. They have new manager now and I expect them to tighten their defense. So I think I will skip him, Raphinha and Kulusevski are probably better (and cheaper) assets.

Saints away is a tough fixture and Leeds with a new manager you never know. He’s also playing a bit wider now because of two strikers.

Home v Saints and away for Leeds who are arguably the worst defensive team in the league right now.

Leeds will not be as open now, every team down their first thing they do is tighten up defense with new manager

For those that wildcarded a few weeks ago that still have 2 x FH, is it worth using a FH this week if you only have 2
      DGW players this week?

If you're well set up for 29 and 30 then a FH in 28 could gain you a lot.

I FH in 26 and it paid off handsomely with 10 doublers, but also meant I've just about held rank without using a FH on 27.

Probably not Pickford. Not an enticing double for me for Everton, plus you won't want to be holding all that value on the bench so its a transfer down the line (compared to say, Dubravaka)

Worth using any chips this week or taking any further hits? Team below I can get out with no hits. 2FH, BB and WC remaining. £1.1m ITB

      Foster*
      Cancelo, Trent, Robertson, Livramento*
      Salah, Son, Foden, Martinelli
      Dennis*, Broja*

      Sanchez, Bowen, Weghorst, Dalot

When will you use the chips if not now? I probably wouldn't WC that, although would lose Sanchez, Dalot, Foden, Bowen and Dennis for sure on a WC - possibly some others.

Currently my team looks like this

      Ramsdale
      Cancelo TAA Robbo RAN*
      Mahrez Bowen Salah Saka
      Dennis* Watkins*

      DDG DCL! Gilmour Reguilon

      * - dgw
      ! - flagged

      I am thinking probably a -12 (1ft):
      DDG --> Sa*
      Reguilon --> Livra*
      DCL --> Broja*
      Mahrez/Bowen --> Coutinho*

Sadly I was 0.1 short of Gilmour to Coutinho

Which would give me this team:
      Sa*
      Livra* TAA Robbo RAN*
      Coutinho* Salah Saka
      Watkins* Broja* Dennis*

      Ramsdale Cancelo Mahrez/Bowen Gilmour

Thoughts greatly appreciated, I have my WC and BB (which will prob be gw29)

Is Antonio a sell now? Held him for long enough as had other fires. Thinking of Joelinton as a replacement, 2 DGWs coming up and can sit on my bench when James are big defenders back.
